They are many times created by a few people who have common interests and share a similar vision. They are generally formed to help “inform” others about a variety of topics and subject matter. “I started it with 72 pairs of actual boots and 500 empty boxes,” Blase says, sitting in the office of his store in Boardman.

The year was 1978, and the 23-year-old Blase was a manager at Regal Shoes inside the Southern Park Mall. Having transferred to the area from Cleveland, the young Blase planned to stay a year and open a store.

“Do I want to go into footwear and get a really small piece of a really big pie, or do I want to get a really big piece of a smaller pie?” he asked himself.

Blase chose the latter, deciding his store would focus on boots, mainly of the cowboy variety. He saved the boxes of every pair of boots he sold at Regal and asked several friends in the business to do likewise.

We’re a family. Lucas has a degree in Information Technology from Youngstown State University and brother, Neil, is a business student at YSU and a social media expert. The brothers have always had a huge spot in their hearts reserved for their grandparents, who they enjoy spending time with. Unfortunately, their grandparents live in Maine and Florida… we live in Ohio. After a number of years doing that, and winning a conference award for one of his AI projects, he began looking for something that would help him unpack experts’ knowledge with greater effectiveness.

Most people know what it's like when they find something that is truly a calling for them, where they’re an absolute natural – that’s what that was like for him.  Jonathan discovered he was a sponge for nuances of language and how they reflect and affect our bodies, our minds, our beliefs, and our future behavior.  

From there, one can apply that anywhere, since language is such a critical foundation of everything we do.  Armed with these tools, he began developing courses to help people become better communicators, better at people-reading and nonverbal awareness and influence, more charismatic, better at managing their emotions, better speakers on any platform, and how to break through their emotional challenges to get better results.

When Jonathan spoke about the nature of genius and mastery at Youngstown TEDx, he was living in Tampa Florida at the time, but behind the scenes at TEDx, he met Cassie who was also speaking at TEDx that year, a native of Youngstown with an utterly captivating speech, and ultimately, three months later, they began to date, long distance.  Jonathan and Cassie joke that they’re the only members of the site TEDxDating.com.  😉

In 1977, Steve’s eldest son, Robert, opened Komara Jewelers’ second location in Cornersburg, offering the same top quality jewelry through experienced sales dedication and affordable prices to their customers.

With the east end of town (Struthers) and the west end of town (Cornersburg) attending to their growing list of satisfied customers, Steve Komara’s youngest son, Tom, identified the need to serve all the customers in between, and in 1985 opened Komara Jewelers third store in Boardman. Founded in Youngstown, Ohio in 2010, it was a partnership of the local newspaper, The Vindicator, and several key initial partners, namely Mill Creek Golf Course, The Lake Club, Farmers National Bank and businessman Ed Muransky. At the helm since the start have been Todd Franko and Ted Suffolk, co-workers at The Vindicator. To steer Greatest, they've been counseled, steered (and politely scolded) by some greats of eastern Ohio golf, including Mike Ferranti, Jonah Karzmer, Brian Tolnar, Stacie Butler, Dennis Miller, John Diana and Don Confoey.

Greatest Golfer now operates as an independent golf content and competition business since the 2019 closure of The Vindicator. Most of the core team above is still in place after 11 years. Along the way, many great golf voices and places have helped steer the event — too many to name and too easy to get in trouble for not naming them. The event started as a golf holes feature for 18 weeks in 2010. An idea was hatched to have a 54-hole tournament at the end of the summer.

That decision and those first 97 golfers seeded what Greatest is today. The 54-hole event hosted by Farmers National draws 300 players every August. In 2011, Greatest added a juniors championship that plays June and July. The 6 qualifiers each draw 70+ players ages 12-18. The top 48 players compete at Avalon Golf and Country Club. In 2012, the Coors Light Scramble Championship launched. Hosted by Superior Beverage, the event assembles the winners of 24 charity scrambles to compete to be the Greatest Scramble Team in the Valley. In 2014, the Greatest Long Drive Championship was created at Tippecanoe Country Club — now crowning champs in Mens, Womens and Seniors divisions.

In 2019, The HBK Par 3 Shootout Under the Lights joined the Long Drive event at Tippe. The night became an instant crowd-pleaser. Also in 2019, the first expansion of Greatest Golfer outsiude Youngstown took place with an event in Columbus. In 2020, Greatest expects to return to Columbus in July and also add a D.C. event in October. Youngstown is the home of Greatest Golfer, and new things are always in the works. Stay tuned. Improving the quality of life for many adults with disabilities. The Purple Cat has been helping Valley residents living with disabilities for almost two decades. Their farm in Coitsville allows clients to work with animals and spend time in nature.

In the last year, they’ve expanded the space for even more of their clients, those bound to wheelchairs.

The Purple Cat at Farmer Casey’s Ranch is a place for anyone with disabilities to work, learn and grow with nature.

Jimmy has immeasurably improved the lives of hundreds of challenged individuals and their families. But it started with Joe. “I saw Joe’s big smile as he got off that bus and knew we were going to be friends,” Jimmy Sutman recalls.

Nearly 20 years on, and Jimmy has befriended many Joes. As the progenitor of The Purple Cat.

Since that first day in 1994 at MASCO, Jimmy and Joe were instantly inseparable. Before long, Jimmy was taking him to ball games, movies, and meals, and befriending his family. Joe increasingly became difficult for his family to handle, so Jimmy dedicated himself to providing him a home.

That act of kindness begat ISLE (Iron and String Life Enhancement), a nonprofit Jimmy started to provide residential, respite, advocacy, transportation and vocational services to Mahoning and Trumbull County individuals with various disabilities. Today they employ over 400 professionals who oversee numerous activities. They also house and care for 88 individuals in 22 separate apartment buildings and homes throughout the region.

“Problem-solving is our primary responsibility to our clients,” Jimmy states. “For some, we have to make all decisions for them. For those more able, we offer Adult Basic Education courses, teaching

them daily living skills, like cooking for themselves, balancing their checkbook, computer skills, whatever they need to learn.”

Various components form the whole of Jimmy’s outreach to the disabled: Iron & String provides residential, respite, advocacy, transportation, and vocational services to individuals with disabilities in Mahoning and Trumbull counties. Iron & String is the parent company of the other components.

GOLDEN STRING helps adults and children with disabilities realize their fullest potential, and offers community-based activities, recreation, and socialization. Five ‘Habilitation Centers’ in the region serve their clients, including Purple Cat Productions, where clients perform in theater and music; Farmer Casey’s Ranch in Coitsville, where clients tend to a large menagerie of animals; and Golden String Radio, where clients become disc jockeys and format all genres of music and communicate through the internet.

While in high school, he was a Golden Gloves boxer, as were his three brothers and his father before them. As a young man, he held jobs at Catullo Prime Meats, Fab-Art Steel, and Keffler Construction in the Mahoning Valley.

Following high school, Joe attended Ohio University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Communications. He then attended law school at Capital University and received his Juris Doctor in 2004.

After graduating from law school, Joe returned to Youngstown where he became a member of the family law firm. Since then, he has practiced worker's compensation law. He is licensed to practice law in both Ohio and West Virginia.

Joe at one time helped legally represent Kelly Pavlik, the Middleweight Boxing Champion of the World, with whom he boxed as a child on the south side of Youngstown.

 Joe has long been an active member of Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Mahoning Valley. He earned the "Big Brother of the Year" award in 2007. Through this organization, He later joined the Youngstown State University Senior Youth Mentorship steering committee.

 As a political novice, Joe was selected in 2008 to replace Senator John Boccieri, who had been elected to the United States House of Representatives. His selection surprised many, as he was only 28 years old at the time and had never held elected office. Nonetheless, Joe easily won the party nomination in 2010 and was elected in the general election with over 60% of the vote.

 In November 2011, Joe was named Assistant Minority Whip in the Senate but quickly rose to Assistant Minority Leader under Eric Kearney in January 2012.  He would serve in that capacity for two years until 2014 when he was unanimously elected by his colleagues to be Minority Leader.

 He was unopposed for re-election in 2014 to hold his seat in the Senate. Due to term limits, Joe cannot run for reelection in 2018.  On November 3, 2020, Joe Schiavoni was elected to serve as a Judge in the Mahoning County Court System.
