Hearing the words, “You were not selected” immediately triggers a range of emotions - disappointment, frustration, and even resentment. However, before letting your emotions get the best of you, it's important to reflect on these feelings while assessing the situation objectively. The boss has known for a month you’ve got a get-away planned for this weekend. It’s midday Friday and you’re trying to finish up that final report due before leaving at 5pm today. Once you’re “out of here” it’s relaxation and freedom for the weekend at your favorite getaway place oceanside. As you’re typing your heart out on the computer, you get that pesky Zoom ring indicating your boss wants to talk NOW! So, you reluctantly answer the Zoom call and learn that a major shift occurred in your project, and you’ll need to add another section to the report titled, “Next Steps”. You tell the boss you can include a few bullets to address the request, however, the boss says she needs a thoroughly vetted chapter (yes, CHAPTER!) addressing Next Steps and the deadline for the report has been extended to 8am Monday morning to give you enough time to work on the additional chapter over the weekend. On ending the call, your heart sinks – you trusted your boss to honor your get-away time. And now you don’t know what to do next.

We spend a lot of time “thinking about” our expectations. However, we don’t spend much time “evaluating” our expectations – whether they are realistic based on the circumstances (including the people) we are dealing with currently. So, as we want things to work out based on what is in “our head”, disappointment usually awaits around the corner.

You’re at the coffee stand at the office and can see into the copy room across the hall.

What caught your eye was a coworker who entered the room with a single sheet of paper in her hand while both copy machines were taken by colleagues who were making several copies.

The coworker appeared impatient and one of the colleagues asked if the coworker only needed to make one copy. The coworker said, “Yes”, and the colleague moved out of the way for a minute.

However, it took longer than a minute for the coworker to make that one copy. The coworker initially made the one copy, and then said, “I just realized I need to fax the page to another”, then decided they needed several copies of the original for distribution at the upcoming meeting, followed by needing to send faxes to several people.

Needless to say, the event continued after you had finished your coffee, and on leaving the area you noticed the “nice” colleague shaking her head in apparent disbelief over what was happening.

So, today you think to yourself, “Enough is enough”. Production has been suffering of late and upper management wants a plan from you to address how to get production back on track. I’m tired of being constantly challenged on this issue. Thus, it will be tough love for a time going forward.

It was a job that most couples never realize they agreed to.
They’d been married for only a few months, when one partner said she wasn’t feeling well of late. A few days later she woke up one morning with fever and chills. He tried to console her and performed the usual ritual of bringing aspirin and liquids. However, it wasn’t long before he realized things were more serious than either of them initially thought.
As time passed, he realized things were likely not to improve…. At least not in the near future.
He remembered that vow of “for better or worse” he had taken just several weeks prior… when most would now be enjoying those sweet dreams of their relationship…. “are such good times gone forever between us?” … he asked himself

We met as colleagues at work.

When leading, there’s No “I” in Team, But There is a “M-E”

It’s one of the most thankless jobs you’ve been assigned--- serving as a team leader. ….. A job loaded with responsibility & accountability, but no power of enforcement.

Even those that have the best people skills can be brought to their knees by that one individual of the group who is not a team player. Sadly, that’s the individual the group is looking to… to challenge your authority as a leader.

My challenge occurred during a meet & greet with the newly formed team. When I gave guidelines that the team was expected to follow—guidelines given to me by management --- an individual spoke up and said, “There’s no I in the word TEAM”.
