This is considered to be one of the classic books in all of Christendom. Tozer wrote it to address what he felt was the problem of the day - people pursuing programs and theological knowledge rather than God.

While the title might lead you to think this is an elementary book on prayer, I found that not to be the case. It's really more a survey of everything he's learned about prayer over 32 years as a priest, after studying the subject, doing it, going on retreats, pilgrimages, and talking to people about the subject.

He's a Jesuit priest so his perspective is a little different than the Protestant perspective.

The book is a quite comprehensive survey of different prayer techniques, and illustrations of those techniques.

It's a good book where you will likely learn some techniques for prayer you didn't know before.

The Circle Maker Mark Batterson

Samuel Morris was an African Prince who was taken captive by an enemy tribe. Near death God supernaturally intervened to free him and to lead him to a missionary site in Liberia. He had a focus on the Holy Spirit and Prayer.

When he met people he would almost always pray for them, and their lives would change permanently! No matter where he was, no matter how briefly he found a way to bring Jesus into the picture and leave them changed people!

It's been said that you haven't really lived until you've found something worth dying for. For Bonhoeffer that was Christ and the Church. He saw the church as engaged in a war with the world to bring change.

He saw it as a group that needed to imitate Christ and care for the "least of these." He saw it as a group that needed to fight for Social Justice and as a universal church that was open to all irrespective of Ethnicity, handicaps, wealth, and/ or race. But a place where all were welcome to worship Christ.

He opposed the Nazi's to the point where he was willing to participate in the plot to assassinate Hitler, and felt it was his duty as a Christian to do so. What is God requiring of you? Get your faith stirred by this unbreakable Believer.

The Cost of Discipleship Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a German PH.D. in theology, but he developed his view of discipleship and costly grace from a visit to an African American Church in New York City where he saw biblical discipleship really being lived out. He saw people who advocated for the least of these, who were busy serving every day of the week.

He took that experience with him back to Germany and used it to fight Nazism. It became the core of his view of Christianity that we are to be disciples of Christ in the same way the original 12 were disciples, and pay a similar price.

And Christianity comes with a high cost, even though salvation is free.
