We learn today via social media of the passing of a huge action icon.

CHUCK NORRIS was part of a stunt family. Not just in his films but in his actual family. AARON, and ERIC were both stuntmen who moved into the world of stunt coordination and directing.

A Norris production was always a fun ride according g to those who worked with him. He was alway there to take advice, give it with his huge martial arts experience and be prepared to stand back and let the stunt double take over when it was deemed appropriate, not only for the actor but also for the film.

He will be sorely missed.....thank you for everything you did sir.

It's hard to believe that it's 25yrs since the creation of the Taurus World Stunt Awards. Here in the UK we saw it on late night TV, 2am in the morning in the graveyard shift. But it harked back to the stuntman awards from the 1980s.

This year marks the 47th Anniversary of 'The Wold Geese' hitting the big screens. Back when film stars were proper film stars. Richard Burton, Richard Harris, Roger Moore and Hardy Kruger with an added pinch of Stewart Granger for good measure. A movie recently re-screened at Showcase cinemas up and down the UK. Can you believe it's been 40yrs since Roger Moore bowed out of the James Bond role? Seems like only yesterday for me and as long as I have breath in my body he's still my favorite. But, at the time, there was a great deal of flack when the public realized just how old Roger Moore really was.....simple arithmetic would have told them he was 57 but they had to go and make a big song and dance about it. "I do all my own stunts, and my own lying", said Roger whenever he was asked about being the good commander.

Luckily for him he had stuntmen like Jason White around to take the blows for him. We chat to Jason and find out a bit more about this remarkable experience.

Back in the 80s crimefighting was much simpler. In the UK we had 'The Bill'. Uniformed police operating out of a fictional Sun Hill police station fighting villains and crime across London. In LA they had TJ Hooker, going above and beyond the duties of a uniformed police officer to get the job done.

It didn't matter what it took, he'd be prepared to do it, which was excellent news for the stunt teams who were given many wonderful action sequences to be involved in.

Stuntman Mike Runyard is a very familiar name in the business. He's a motorbike guy and has worked on many wonderful movies and TV shows over the years including 'To Live and Die In LA', 'Cobra', 'Hook' and 'Lethal Weapon 3', but he is probably best known for his work as stunt double to Michael Douglas. Their working relationship started in 1989 on 'Black Rain' and has been going strong ever since, regardless of if it's on the big screen or the 18th hole.

Back in 1972 when you had a problem with someone, and if you could afford it you'd call a mechanic, but if Charles Brosnson turned up at your door chances are he wasn't going to replace a tyre of cam belt.
The mechanic in question is a term for a hit man and Charlie is doing nicely until Jan Michael Vincent comes along and want to be taught the ways of the world. Luckily we're not discussing Jan's interpretation of the script...that's a whole different podcast, but the action is in good hands with ALAN GIBBS in charge, in particular the exciting bike chase which we highlight here. Jeannie Epper was an American stunt icon, part of a family that practically invested the game. Denise Ryan was a stunt performer and coordinator from the UK who broke boundaries and gave new performers opportunity to shine.

DAIVID LEITCH, the director, was Brad Pitt's stuntman for 5-6 movies - he's given us Atomic Blonde, Deadpool and Bullet Train to name but a few.

Ben Hur is one of the greatest biblical epics of our time. When in 1959 Charlton Heston took the lead role and William Wyler directed it became the most expensive film ever made and won 11 Academy Awards. The following year Stunt Coordinator YAKIMA CANUTT was presented with an Honorary Oscar for his achievement in the action business. 
In 2016 a new version was made - technology allowed the filmmakers to do things they couldn't have dreamt of back in 59. The cast said, "its not a remake, its a reimagining". The action is very clever and well worth exploring....the final film although being over 80 mins shorter than the original, just doesn't tick any of the boxes ticked over and over again by the 1959 classic.

A Burt Reynolds double bill is always an essential. Here we see him playing Gator McClusky in White Lightning in 1973 and again in Gator in 1976.

Another excellent addition to the action classic. Carl Weathers is ACTION JACKSON and in order to get him through the movie, the director is ex stuntman CRAIG BAXLEY. Safe as houses here. Doubled by JULIUS LAFLORE, Carl manages to keep the action on his side.
A fun movie that should have gotten a sequel, but just didn't do enough business. Thank God for stunt coordinator JOPHREY BROWN who gave it his all.

Back in the day, I'm allowed use that phrase as I'm of a certain age, ITV was the home of light entertainment. 7pm you could see Emmerdale Farm, not Emmerdale...this was in the days when it was about farming and not adultery or murder.

This episode is only one of two where a stuntman is the unsuspecting guest.

Richie Gaona is one of those select few of top US stuntmen who had an opportunity to work on the biggest and best productions Hollywood can throw at them.
Starting out life in the family business of circus performer Richie quickly realised that his skills would be put to good use in the film game. A helping hand along the way from an established stuntman and coordinator, gave him a shove in the right direction.

Not only is he a great performer, coordinator and circus coordinator and advisor but he's also one of the nicest humans on the planet. This has been my good fortune to know and admire the man over the last 10yrs.

Sir Norman Wisdom was definitely an important factor in the success of the stuntman in film. Norman was guaranteed to make you laugh whatever you did. He couldn't walk down the street without seeing an opportunity to fall over and make people laugh.
Tex Fuller was a stuntman who was perfectly cast as Norman's stuntman for many of his movie outings. They worked very closely together but didn't always see eye to eye. However, in amongst all of this chais common sense did prevail and the really dangerous stuff was left to Tex.

"Broadsword calling Danny Boy"

Growing up, the only Danny Boy I was familiar with was the song sung by the family at special occasions like funerals. Before I knew it, sure wasn't it the calling card for this Richard Burton classic.

A classic on so many levels, firstly the cast. Bringing together Burton and Eastwood was a stroke of genius. Mary Ure was another excellent casting decision alongside Ingrid Pitt. The score by Ron Goodwin so easily recognisable and the action. Coordinated by JOE POWELL with 2nd Unit Directed by YAKIMA CANUTT.

Here I discuss the action with stuntwoman GILLIAN ALDAM who doubled Mary Ure and JIM DOWDALL who worked for Bapty, the armourers at the time, but got himself involved on the picture.

I'm joined by crime writer and boxing aficionado Rob Parker who gives us a look inside the ring as he boxes on a regular basis. What's it like to be hit in the fight, how could they create these shots for this film?

A war epic set in a Norfolk village. A bit like an episode of the Archers if Putin popped in for a pint.

Based on the Higgins novel from the previous year, Michael Caine plays a German officer....obviously, who alongside Robert Duvall and Donald Sutherland are given their orders from Hitler via Himmler....are you keeping up with this?

Kill Churchill is the order - will they do it?  Who will stop them?  Who cares?  Not the director John Sturgess very clearly, but its been a fan favourite for many years. Stunt Coordinator is the wonderful GERRY CRAMPTON and he is given a very solid team of performers. Enjoy

Many have taken the role of Bond, but I don't think anyone has delivered it better.

Every once in a while a show comes along that captivates you. This was my show. I loved it. I loved the chemistry between the two leads and the action. At the helm was ROY ALON who worked his magic and created amazing action sequences. True to his word he'd create "Feature film stunts on a TV budget", back in the days when there was such a thing.

Cop shows come and go, this one was one of my favourites from the 80s. HUNTER was a cool, tall cop with a huge firearm and a hatred of crime. This series was created by Stephen J Cannall who gave us The A-Team so action was top drawer.
Stunt Coordinators included RUSSELL SOLBERG AND TERRY LEONARD plus a host of others as you'll find out....which "works for me" (if you know....you know)

After the untimely passing of Robbie Coltrane recently I was very moved by the amount of tributes that were pouring in from many stunt performers/coordinators who had worked with him over the years. 
I thought it would be interesting to explore doubles wearing costumes and especially those who have to wear costumes that could prevent regular movement. Robbie played Hargrid in the Harry Potter films and his costume is an excellent example.

So stick around and i'll throw some light on this for you.

So to round off the long weekend of 60th anniversary shenanigans we have a look at 6 stunts that I feel really represent the Bond films and have changed cinema for the better.

On Saturday I had the pleasure of attending the BFI in London to listen to stuntman Olivier Schneider and special effects supervisor Chris Courbold and some of the many adventures they've had whilst filming James Bond movies.
A good audience and a bar that provided all essential refreshment was all we needed to have a great time.
