Part 1 (Episode 64) left off in 1923 following the construction of the Don Pedro Dam, which was finished on time and on budget, launching TID into the electric business.

Prepay Bonds

What's a Substation?

Project Nexus - Solar Over Canals Project Update

Canal Modernization

TID’s irrigation system was built in the late-1890s and operates in much the same way as it was originally designed—flowing by gravity from La Grange Dam to and throughout our service territory.

However, regulatory mandates, more frequent extreme weather events, and changing customer expectations, requires that the District continue to update and modernize the irrigation system to meet today’s needs and to be ready for the future.

Sustainable Groundwater Management Act Update

Groundwater Recharge Projects

On Episode 34 of the TID Water & Power Podcast we're joined by TID Supervising Engineering Technician, Wes Miller, to discuss groundwater recharge projects.

The 2022-23 Water Year was the third wettest on record and, thanks for quick action and innovative solutions, TID was able to pilot several groundwater recharge projects using that flood water.

However, with ever changing hydrological conditions and the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (or SGMA), the District will need to continue innovate and implement new recharge projects.

On this episode we discuss the District’s relationship with groundwater, projects we were able to successfully pilot last year, and what types of recharge projects are coming down the pipe.

TID History: How the District Became an Electric Utility

For 100 years, TID has served safe, reliable, and affordable power to our community – which is still vital to our region’s wellbeing today. But getting to that point was no easy task. It took visionaries, legal battles, and monumental decisions – and votes – to bring what we know as TID to fruition.

On this episode we discuss the District’s struggles in the early 20th Century, the construction of Old Don Pedro, and how TID came to be the electric utility in our region.

However, despite their relative size, they are crucial to the District’s efforts to modernize and increase efficiency within our more than century-old irrigation system.

Water Rights and an Uncertain Future

Water Rights in California provide certainty for the availability of water for cities and towns throughout the state – especially for the fertile ag land within TID. That certainty allows for continued investment in infrastructure and the ability of TID to reliably store and deliver water, even in dry years. However, as the water rights system continues to be scrutinized, recent legislative proposals to change the water rights system would remove that certainty.

Irrigation Season and Operations

Electric Vehicles and Transportation Electrification

Electric vehicles continue to grow in popularity, but there are still many barriers that prevent the transportation sector from making the complete switch from gas vehicles. And with mandates on electric vehicle sales coming in 2035, electric vehicles will not be going away. To help remove some of these barriers, TID is leveraging credits from the state to fund an Electric Vehicle Program – offering rebates, information, and even the opportunity to test drive an electric vehicle, to our customers.

On Episode 16 of the TID Water & Power Podcast we sit down with TID's Tracy Jones to discuss the District's customer service efforts.

When you think of TID, the first thing that comes to mind may be a bucket truck you see en route to restore power or a truck on a canal bank delivering water to our growers. But, your first actual interaction with TID, either by phone or out in the community is likely going to be with a Customer Service Representative. Each day, TID Customer Service Representatives have contact with hundreds of customers over the phone and in-person, process hundreds of payments and applications, and succeed at making even a dreaded “customer service call” an enjoyable experience.

On this episode we discuss the role of TID’s customer service team, the types of calls and interactions customer service reps have daily, and new initiatives that have been implemented to make the customer experience with TID even better.

How TID Became the First Irrigation District in California

TID was officially formed on June 6, 1887 as the first irrigation district in California and began its mission of serving our community – now for 135 years. As we celebrate 135 years of service the Central Valley of California, we wanted to deep dive into the rich history of how the District was formed and what the early years were like for the District and customers.

On this episode we discuss life within the region prior to TID, how the District became the first irrigation district in the state, and how the region changed in those early years after TID’s formation.

Dam Safety

Hydrological Forecasting and Modeling

On Episode 12 of the TID Water & Power Podcast we sit down with TID’s Olivia Cramer and Wes Monier to discuss the District's hydrological forecast, modeling, and operations .

In the midst of a third consecutive dry year, the TID Board of Directors set the irrigation season at only 27 inches of available water. However, even at nearly a 50% reduction of normal, TID growers are in better shape than much of the state – with some growers receiving 10% of normal or less.

Thanks to investments in data and technology, TID has become a leading innovator in hydrological forecasting and modeling, allowing the District to better prepare and plan for drought.

On this episode we discuss the current water year and how TID is leveraging technology to better forecast and plan water operations.

Project Nexus: First-in-the-Nation Solar Over Canals Project

On Episode 11 of the TID Water & Power Podcast we sit down with TID’s Josh Weimer to discuss the Project Nexus, the District's solar panels over canals project.

In February, TID announced Project Nexus, a pilot project to install 5 megawatts of solar panel canopies over our existing irrigation canals – the first project of its kind in the nation. The $20 million project, which is funded by the California Department of Water Resources, will not only benefit TID, but if successful, could become a template with potential to be replicated elsewhere in the state to help California achieve its water and energy goals.

Sustainable Groundwater Management Act

Following the third year of a historic drought, the state passed a series of bills that would become SGMA and would become the framework for how groundwater would be managed throughout California. That enables us to maintain local control and decision-making that benefits our unique communities. Unlike some utilities throughout the state, TID is not beholden to profit-driven shareholders, which helping keep rates low and allows TID to put money back into our community.

Drought

Locally, and across much of the state of California, we are in the midst of a drought. TID is experiencing the fourth driest two-year period on record – dating back to 1897 – and TID irrigation customers have received a reduction in surface water for the second consecutive year. But TID has taken what we learned from past droughts and has made steady preparations in the years to help customers and the District better weather this drought as well.

Don Pedro Relicensing

On Episode 3 of the TID Water & Power Podcast we sit down with TID’s Michael Cooke to discuss the Relicensing of the Don Pedro Project.

Much like the way you need a license to drive a vehicle, Hydropower facilities like the Don Pedro Project require licenses from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to operate. Only, waiting in line at the DMV would be a treat compared to the hydropower Relicensing process in which TID, in partnership with the Modesto Irrigation District, has been working on for more than a decade.

We’ll dive into what the relicensing process is, why it’s important to the District and our customers, what we’ve accomplished in the process thus far, and what’s next.
