Chris loves his after-school cartoon, Harvey the Wizard, but Mom is not so sure it is helping him become more like Jesus. When Chris reads his Sabbath School lesson about Satan’s tricks and remembers how Saul was fooled, he starts wondering whether the things he watches really do matter.

At Sabbath School, Mrs. Shue reveals something new for the quarter: Jesus’ Mirror, a special reminder that the Shoebox Kids are growing to be more like Jesus. When Chris shares what happened after he used a cartoon “magic word” on his cousins, the class learns that Satan can try to sneak his ideas into our thoughts in small ways. Chris discovers that choosing what fills his mind is one way Jesus helps him grow.

Talk about it:

• Why was Chris’s mom concerned about the cartoon he was watching?
• What did Chris learn from the story of Saul and the witch?
• What was “Jesus’ Mirror” supposed to help the Shoebox Kids see?
• How can the things we watch, hear, or say affect the way we treat others?
• What is one choice you can make this week to become more like Jesus?

Samuel has died, and King Saul is frightened. The Philistines are ready for battle, but Saul does not know what to do. He tries to pray, but after years of ignoring God’s voice and disobeying His commands, Saul receives no answer. Desperate and afraid, Saul makes a terrible choice: he disguises himself and visits a witch near Endor, asking her to call up Samuel.

But the voice Saul hears is not really Samuel. It is a deception meant to confuse and frighten him. Saul learns that his kingdom will be given to David and that the battle ahead will end in tragedy. This serious story reminds kids that listening to God matters, obedience matters, and we should never look for answers from Satan’s servants when God has already shown us the right way.

Talk about it:

• Why was Saul afraid after Samuel died?
• What had Saul done that made it harder for him to hear God’s voice?
• Why was it wrong for Saul to visit the witch of Endor?
• How can we listen to God and obey Him before we feel confused or afraid?
• Who can help you make wise choices when you do not know what to do?

Christmas feels different for Jenny this year. She loved spending time with her dad, but she misses the big family Christmas gatherings her mom remembers from childhood. When Jenny realizes her mom cannot afford plane tickets to visit Grandma and Grandpa, she even offers to stay with friends so her mom can go alone. But Mom says the best part of Christmas is being with Jenny.

At Sabbath School, the Shoebox Kids learn about David and Jonathan and what true friendship looks like. Jenny notices Maria and DeeDee whispering and giggling without her, and she starts to wonder if she is being left out. But after class, Jenny discovers her friends have been planning something special all along, and she sees a “Jesus footprint” in their gift of friendship and love.

Talk about it:

• Why did Christmas feel both happy and sad for Jenny and her mom?
• What did Jenny learn about true friendship from David and Jonathan?
• Why did Jenny think Maria and DeeDee were leaving her out?
• How did Jenny see Jesus working through her friends?
• What is one way you can show friendship and love this week?

After David defeats Goliath, the people cheer for him, but King Saul becomes jealous and angry. Even while David plays his harp, Saul tries to hurt him. Thankfully, David has a true friend in Saul’s son, Jonathan. Jonathan helps David learn whether it is safe to return to the palace, but when Saul throws a spear at Jonathan too, they both know David must run.

David hides in caves with his family, friends, and hundreds of men while Saul searches for him. Then one day, Saul walks right into the very cave where David is hiding. David has the perfect chance to hurt Saul, but he chooses mercy instead. This story reminds kids that true friendship is loyal, jealousy is dangerous, and God can help us do what is right even when others treat us unfairly.

Talk about it:

• Why did King Saul become jealous of David?
• How did Jonathan show that he was a true friend?
• Why did David refuse to hurt Saul in the cave?
• What does this story teach us about mercy and loyalty?
• How can you be a faithful friend this week?

The Shoebox Kids try to imagine just how tall Goliath really was, and Chris starts wondering what he would ask David if he could talk to him after the battle. Soon, Chris imagines himself sitting in a field with David, asking the big question: “Weren’t you afraid?”

David’s answer helps Chris see the story in a whole new way. David was not brave because he was big, strong, or important. He was brave because he trusted who God is. When everyone else thought Goliath was too powerful, David remembered that God was stronger. Chris learns that God can do great things through anyone who trusts Him.

Talk about it:

• What question did Chris want to ask David?
• Why did David decide to fight Goliath?
• What does it mean that “it doesn’t matter who we are, it only matters who God is”?
• How can trusting God help you be brave this week?

King Saul is troubled, and David is called to the palace to play his harp and help calm the king. But when the Philistines gather for battle, a giant named Goliath steps into the valley and challenges Israel’s army every morning and evening for forty days. Everyone is afraid, until David arrives with food for his brothers and hears Goliath mocking God’s people.

David is only a shepherd boy, but he remembers how God helped him protect his sheep from a lion and a bear. Refusing Saul’s heavy armor, David walks toward Goliath with his sling, his staff, and five smooth stones. Goliath comes with a sword and spear, but David comes in the name of the God of Israel. This exciting story reminds kids that the battle belongs to God, and when He is with us, we can be brave.

Talk about it:

• Why were Saul and the Israelite soldiers afraid of Goliath?
• What helped David believe God would be with him in the battle?
• Why did David choose not to wear Saul’s armor?
• What does it mean that “the battle belongs to God”?

The Shoebox Kids are laughing as Willie’s dog, Coco, shows off a few silly tricks. But the real lesson begins when Mrs. Shue talks about King Saul and what happens when we only obey God halfway. Willie understands that lesson better than anyone because of something that happened on his English test.

He thought the directions were easy. He circled the subjects, underlined the verbs, and finished fast. But when Mrs. Thurber handed it back, Willie saw red marks everywhere and a big fat zero at the top. What did he miss? A simple part of the instructions that changed everything.

Talk about it:

• Why is halfway obedience still disobedience?
• What did Willie forget to do on his English test?
• How did Willie’s mistake help him understand King Saul’s story?
• Why does God give us rules and plans to follow?
• What is one way you can obey God completely this week?

Saul was brave and led Israel into battle, but he struggled to obey God completely. First, he offered a sacrifice that only the priest was supposed to offer. Later, when God gave him another chance to obey, Saul only followed part of God’s command and tried to make excuses. Samuel reminded him that obeying God is better than offering sacrifices.

Because Saul would not fully obey, God sent Samuel to Bethlehem to find a new king among Jesse’s sons. Samuel thought the tallest, strongest son looked like a king, but God said He looks at the heart. Finally, young David was called in from watching the sheep. God chose him, and Samuel anointed David with oil. David returned to the fields, waiting for God’s timing to become king.

Talk about it:

• Why was Saul’s “halfway obedience” a problem?
• What did Samuel mean when he said obeying God is better than sacrifice?
• Why didn’t God choose Jesse’s oldest son?
• What does it mean that God looks at the heart?
• How can you obey God completely this week?

DeeDee is tired of practicing piano and wants to quit before her recital. Her father reminds her that she promised to take lessons for a full year, even when practice feels hard. In Sabbath School, Mrs. Shue teaches the Shoebox Kids that God’s plans can be trusted, even when we don’t understand them.

When recital night arrives, DeeDee suddenly feels nervous. What if she makes a mistake? What if everyone laughs? She whispers a prayer, sits at the piano, and begins to play. By the end of the night, DeeDee discovers that practice, trust, and following a good plan can lead to joy—and maybe even a “Jesus footprint” on the piano bench.

Talk about it:

• Why did DeeDee want to quit piano lessons?
• How did DeeDee’s father help her keep her promise?
• What did Sabbath School teach DeeDee about trusting God’s plan?
• When have you had to keep going even when something felt hard?

Israel has never had a king like the other nations because God has always been their King. But when Samuel grows old and his sons become unfair judges, the people demand a king to lead them and fight their battles. Samuel feels hurt, but God explains that the people are really rejecting Him. Even after Samuel warns them that a king will take their sons, daughters, land, animals, and food, the people still insist.

Meanwhile, Saul is searching for lost donkeys when God leads him straight to Samuel. Samuel anoints Saul with oil, showing that God has chosen him to become Israel’s first king. Later, when all Israel gathers to meet their new ruler, Saul is nowhere to be found—until God reveals he is hiding among the baggage.

Talk about it:

• Why did Israel want a king like the other nations?
• What warning did Samuel give the people about having a king?
• How did God lead Saul to Samuel?
• Why do you think Saul hid when it was time to be introduced as king?
• How can we choose God’s plan instead of just trying to be like everyone else?

Maria starts Sabbath morning frustrated when little Yo-Yo “decorates” her dresser the hard way. At church, Mrs. Shue teaches the Shoebox Kids a powerful object lesson by turning the classroom into a principal’s office—showing what respect looks like (and what it doesn’t). Then Maria hears a new way to think about church: it’s God’s office, a place to be reverent because Jesus promised to be with His people when they gather. During the sermon, Maria chooses worship over notes, helps Yo-Yo sit still, and keeps her eyes open for Jesus’ footprints.

Talk about it:

• What does respect look like at home and at church?
• Why did Mrs. Shue call church “God’s office”?
• What helps you pay attention during worship?
• How can you help a younger child learn reverence?

Israel loses a battle against the Philistines, and the leaders make a dangerous mistake. Instead of turning back to God, they treat the Ark of the Covenant like a lucky charm and carry it into war. But God is not impressed—and the Philistines win again, capturing the Ark and bringing it to their temple in Ashdod.

Then something shocking happens. The Philistines place the Ark in front of their idol, Dagon… and the next morning, everything is different. As the Ark is moved from city to city, trouble follows—until the Philistine rulers finally decide it has to go back to Israel. This episode reminds kids that God is holy, He is not a good-luck charm, and He always has the power to protect what belongs to Him.

Talk about it:

• Why did Israel bring the Ark into battle, and what was wrong with that choice?
• What does this story teach us about obeying God instead of relying on “good luck”?
• What happened to Dagon when the Ark was placed in the Philistine temple?
• What is one way you can show respect for God this week?

Sammy keeps fixing his bike when a new neighbor boy, A.J., pops up over the fence. A.J. seems lonely, and Sammy soon learns why. A.J. has been in trouble for stealing, and his dad says he’ll always be a troublemaker. During Sabbath School, the Shoebox Kids learn how God called Samuel to deliver a message, and Mrs. Shue challenges them to “deliver God’s mail” this week.

When A.J. comes over again, Sammy prays for the right words and tells him the most important message of all: Jesus loves him and can change his heart. Just as A.J. starts to hope, something happens that might keep Sammy from ever seeing him again.

Talk about it:

Samuel is growing up in the tabernacle, helping Eli the priest. But Eli’s sons are doing wrong things, and it’s hurting God’s house and God’s people. One night, while Samuel is in bed, he hears a voice call his name. He runs to Eli—three times—thinking Eli is calling. Finally, Eli understands: it’s God. He tells Samuel exactly what to say if he hears the voice again.

When God calls once more, Samuel answers, “Speak, Lord, I want to serve You. I’m listening.” God gives Samuel a hard message about what will happen to Eli’s family because of his sons’ sins. The next morning, Samuel is afraid to share it—but Eli insists, and Samuel tells the truth. Even though Samuel is still young, God has found a messenger who will listen and speak His words.

Talk about it:

• What did Eli tell Samuel to say when God spoke again?
• Why was God’s message hard for Samuel to share?

In this episode, we meet Hannah, a woman who feels very sad because she cannot have a child. During a trip to God’s house, Hannah pours out her heart in a quiet, honest prayer and promises that if God gives her a son, she will dedicate him to the Lord. Eli the priest sees her praying and encourages her, and Hannah chooses to trust God’s care. God answers Hannah’s prayer, and she names her baby Samuel, remembering that he was a gift from the Lord. True to her promise, Hannah later brings Samuel back to serve God, showing what faith, gratitude, and keeping your word look like. A beautiful story that reminds kids God hears prayers, even the whispered ones.

Talk about it:

• What did Hannah do when she felt sad and discouraged?
• Why do you think Hannah’s quiet prayer was so special?
• How did Hannah show trust in God after she prayed?
• What is something you can pray about this week and trust God with?

The Shoebox Kids are studying Ruth, but Mrs. Shue has a surprise. They’re putting on a play. Costumes, sandals, and Bible-times names fill the room as Maria becomes Ruth, DeeDee becomes Naomi, and Chris tries to figure out how to play two different characters. After the laughter settles, the class starts talking about something harder: being teased. Chris shares how kids made fun of his real name, Cristóbal, and how he finally shoved one boy after getting pushed too far. The kids compare stories and wonder what Ruth might have done if people called her names.

Mrs. Shue opens the Bible to Jesus’ words in Matthew 5 about loving your enemies and praying for those who hurt you. Chris realizes the “missing piece” was prayer. Jesus was there to help, but he didn’t ask. He calls it “almost a footprint,” and decides that next time, he’ll ask Jesus for strength to be kind, even when someone is cruel.

Talk about it:

• What happened to Chris at recess, and why did he get so angry?
• What does Jesus say we should do when people hurt our feelings?
• What are some kind choices you can make when someone teases you?
• When could you pause and pray before you react this week?

When a famine strikes Israel, Naomi’s family moves from Bethlehem to Moab. Years later, Naomi loses her husband and both sons, and decides to return home. Ruth, Naomi’s Moabite daughter-in-law, refuses to leave her and makes a beautiful promise: “Where you go, I will go… your God will be my God.” Back in Bethlehem, Ruth gathers leftover barley to help them survive and ends up in the field of Boaz, a kind relative who protects and provides for her. In time, Boaz marries Ruth, Naomi’s family is cared for, and Ruth becomes part of a very special family line that leads to King David. A tender story about faithfulness, kindness, and choosing God.

Talk about it:

• Why did Ruth choose to stay with Naomi even when it was hard?
• How did Boaz show kindness to Ruth in the fields?

Willie prays, thinks about how he’d feel if it were his dog Coco, and quietly says “no,” even though it costs him their friendship. In Sabbath School he adds a “Jesus footprint,” thankful for courage to do what’s right. A real-life story about peer pressure, kindness, and the strength God gives to choose good friends.

Talk about it:

• Why did Willie want to be friends with Max and Lucas, and what did he notice about how they treated others?

An angel tells Manoah’s wife that her baby, Samson, will be a Nazarite—set apart for God. Captured and blinded, Samson prays for God’s help one last time. God answers, and Samson pushes down the temple pillars, defeating Israel’s enemies and beginning their freedom. This powerful story shows that our strength comes from God, and that He still hears us when we turn back to Him.

Talk about it:

• What does it mean that Samson was a Nazarite “set apart” for God?
• How did Samson’s choices get him into trouble?
• What changed when Samson prayed at the end of the story?

When the Midianites gather a massive force, Gideon is nervous—but God patiently strengthens his faith with two fleece signs. Then God does something surprising: He sends home the fearful, then separates the rest at the river until only three hundred remain. After overhearing a Midianite’s dream that foretells their defeat, Gideon leads his tiny team with trumpets, jars, and hidden lamps. At Gideon’s signal, the jars shatter, lights blaze, and trumpets blast—God throws the enemy into confusion, and Israel wins without a sword swing. Kids learn that God gets the glory, uses small numbers in big ways, and helps us be brave when we feel outnumbered.

Talk about it:

• Why did God keep making Gideon’s army smaller?

• Why did Maria choose to lie, and how did it affect her family?

After Joshua dies, Israel forgets God and the Midianites steal their food year after year. When the people finally pray, God answers. He sends a prophet to remind them of His rescue and then calls an unlikely hero named Gideon. While Gideon is secretly threshing wheat, an angel says, “The Lord is with you.” Gideon asks for proof, and God sends fire to burn up his offering. That night, God tells Gideon to tear down his father’s altar to Baal and build one for the Lord. Even though Gideon feels small, God promises, “I will be with you.” Kids learn that God hears prayers, chooses ordinary people, and gives courage to do what is right.

Talk about it:

• Why were the Israelites hiding, and what made life so hard for them?

Sammy loves Sabbath—except for those tight shoes…and Pete, the class pest. After a Sabbath School lesson about loving enemies (Matthew 5:39, 44), Sammy heads to school determined to do right. When Pete flicks his ear and later tries to copy during a surprise math test, Sammy wants to tell on him. A quick prayer changes his plan: maybe Pete isn’t mean—maybe he’s confused and afraid to ask for help. Instead of getting even, Sammy asks the teacher if he can tutor Pete, and he spots a “Jesus footprint” in his own heart—God giving power to do the hard thing. A real-life story about kindness, courage, and choosing what Jesus would do.

Five kings join forces to attack Gibeon, and Joshua rushes to help after praying for God’s guidance. God promises to be with Israel. Joshua leads a nighttime march for a surprise attack, and God sends a storm with giant hailstones that scatter the enemy. When Joshua sees the battle will last past sunset, he prays a bold prayer. God makes the sun stand still over Gibeon and the moon pause so Israel can finish the fight. It becomes a day unlike any other because God listened to a leader who trusted Him. Talk about it:

The Shoebox Kids head out for a short Sabbath School hike and learn a big lesson about faith. Even though they cannot see any animals, Sammy spots tracks in the mud. They cannot see the wind, but they feel it and watch it move the trees. Back in class, Mrs. Shue reads Hebrews 11:1 and invites everyone to watch for “Jesus’ footprints” this quarter. The kids will look for small clues that Jesus is with them, like answers to prayer, kinder choices, or help with everyday decisions. Faith grows when we notice the evidence that Jesus is real and working in our lives.

Talk about it:

• What clues helped the class know animals and wind were real even when they could not see them?
• What does Hebrews 11:1 say about faith?
• Where did you notice “Jesus’ footprints” this week?
• What decision can you pray about and watch how Jesus helps?

News of Israel’s victories spreads, and the people of Gibeon hatch a sneaky plan: they dress in worn-out clothes, carry crumbly bread, and pretend to be from far away so Joshua will make peace with them. The leaders look at the evidence, taste the bread—and forget to pray. Three days later, they discover the truth. Because they had promised safety, Israel keeps its word, and the Gibeonites become woodcutters and water carriers for God’s house. This story teaches discernment, the importance of asking God for guidance, and why keeping our promises matters.

Talk about it:

• Why did the Gibeonites pretend to be from a faraway country?
• What important step did Joshua and the leaders forget?
• Why did Israel keep its promise even after learning the truth?
• What jobs did the Gibeonites do afterward, and what can we learn from that?

Maria thinks copying answers from her teacher’s book is “no big deal”—until a cookie caper with her little sister, Yo-Yo, makes the truth impossible to hide. Later in Sabbath School, the Shoebox Kids study Achan’s story and learn that God sees everything and wants honest hearts. Maria realizes she needs to tell the truth, too. A relatable story about temptation, telling the truth, and how God helps us choose integrity even when no one is watching.

Talk about it:

• Why did Maria think copying the answers didn’t matter at first?
• How did Yo-Yo’s “chocolate on her face” help Maria see her own mistake?
• What does Achan’s story teach us about hidden choices?

After the victory at Jericho, Israel expects an easy win at Ai—but the soldiers run away and Joshua falls before God, devastated. God reveals the reason: someone has disobeyed by taking things from Jericho that were meant to be destroyed. By God’s choice, the tribes and families come forward until Achan is named. He confesses that he hid silver, gold, and clothes under his tent. Israel removes the sin from the camp, and then—following God’s new plan—they return to Ai and win. This sobering story shows that hidden choices can hurt many people, and that God calls His people to honest hearts and obedient lives.

Talk about it:

• Why did Israel lose the first battle at Ai?
• What did Achan take, and why was hiding it such a big problem?
• How did God help Joshua after the people obeyed?
• What is one honest choice you can make this week, even if it’s hard?

During fitness class, the Shoebox Kids trudge through endless laps and start wondering why God asked Israel to march around Jericho for seven days. In Sabbath School, Mrs. Shue explains that God wanted His people to see that victory was His gift—not their strength—and to remember His power when they felt discouraged. The kids share their own “remember when God helped…” stories, then face another week of laps with fresh courage. A relatable episode about perseverance, obedience, and trusting God to finish what He starts.

Around and Around

Talk about it:

• Why did God ask Israel to march for seven days instead of knocking down the walls right away?
• How does remembering past answers to prayer help you trust God today?
• What’s one “lap” in your life that feels hard right now, and how can you keep going?
• How can you remind your family of God’s help this week?

Two spies slip into Jericho and find unexpected help from Rahab, who lowers them over the wall with a red rope and trusts God to save her family. As Joshua prays, the Commander of the Lord’s army appears with a surprising plan: for six days, Israel will march silently around the city behind priests carrying the Ark; on the seventh day, they will circle seven times, blow the trumpets, and shout. When they obey, Jericho’s mighty walls crash down, Rahab’s family is rescued, and everyone learns that God’s power—and His promises—can be trusted.

Talk about it:

• Why did Rahab hang the red rope in her window?
• What was unusual about God’s battle plan for Jericho?
• How did the people show trust and obedience to God?

When Mom suddenly doubles over in pain, Jenny has to act fast. With a calm 911 dispatcher on the line, she gives their address, stays on the phone, and prays while the paramedics race to help. At the hospital, a kind EMT and a trusted family friend remind Jenny she’s not alone—and soon the doctor says Mom will be okay. This faith-and-safety story shows kids how to handle emergencies, be brave, and remember God’s promise: “Be strong and courageous… for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9).

Talk about it:

• What did Jenny do that helped the dispatcher and paramedics the most?
• Why is it important to know your address and a trusted adult to call?

From Mount Nebo, Moses blesses the tribes and says goodbye as Joshua becomes Israel’s new leader. God tells Joshua to be strong and brave and to lead the people across the flooded Jordan. When the priests carry the Ark of the Covenant and step into the water, the river stops and everyone walks across on dry ground. Joshua sets up twelve stones as a reminder of God’s miracle. In their new land, Israel celebrates Passover, eats Canaan’s food, and the manna stops. A faith-building story about trusting God and remembering His answers to prayer.

Talk about it:

• What did God ask the priests to do, and what happened when they obeyed?
• Why did Joshua set up twelve stones on the riverbank?

On his way home, Sammy hears a frightened little dog and finds two boys throwing rocks. He steps in to protect her, takes her home for the night, and starts posting signs to find her family. Kindness spreads when Scott, one of the boys, helps put up the signs. Soon a grateful owner appears and “Penny” goes home. At Sabbath School the Shoebox Kids learn about Balaam and his donkey, and Sammy sees how listening to God and caring for animals builds a name people can trust. The next day, neighbors bring Sammy a stray kitten because they know he will help. A gentle story about courage, compassion, and doing the right thing even when no one is watching.

Talk about it:

• What brave choice did Sammy make when he saw the boys with rocks?

King Balak hires the prophet Balaam to curse Israel, but God says Balaam may only speak His words. On the road, Balaam’s donkey sees an angel with a sword and swerves three times to keep him safe. Balaam cannot see the angel and gets angry, even hitting the donkey, until God lets him see what the donkey saw all along. Humbled, Balaam goes to Moab and, instead of cursing, blesses God’s people again and again because no one can turn God’s blessing into a curse. Kids learn to listen for God’s guidance, treat others kindly, and choose obedience over greed.

Talk about it:

• Why did the donkey leave the road, and what did Balaam learn when he finally saw the angel?
• How does this story teach us to listen to God even when we want something else?

Willie is home sick and missing Sabbath School when his friends bring class to him. After a sweet visit and a lesson about the bronze serpent, Willie falls asleep and dreams he is in the Israelite camp, bitten by a snake. His friends race him through the crowded tents to look at the serpent on the pole. Willie chooses to trust God, looks up in faith, and is healed. He wakes to find his fever lower and learns with Mom why some people would not believe and how God’s love invites us to trust Him. A gentle story that helps kids understand “look and live” and how Jesus heals those who believe.

Talk about it:

• Why did Willie need to look at the serpent in his dream?
• What does “look and live” mean for us today?

After years in the desert, the Israelites grumble again when water runs out. Moses loses his patience and strikes the rock instead of speaking to it, and God sadly tells him he will not lead the people into Canaan. Later, as the people complain, poisonous snakes sweep through the camp. God gives a surprising rescue plan. Moses lifts a bronze snake on a pole, and everyone who looks in faith is healed. This story points to Jesus, who would be lifted up on the cross so that everyone who believes in Him can live forever.

Talk about it:

• Why was striking the rock a problem, and what can we learn about trusting God?

While studying the story of Korah’s rebellion, the Shoebox Kids wonder how to recognize God’s leaders today. Pastor Hill visits their class to share what pastors do and how God calls people to serve. Inspired, the kids secretly plan a surprise “thank-you” party to show appreciation for their pastor, even solving a parking puzzle so he will not suspect a thing. When the lights flash on and everyone shouts “Surprise!”, Pastor Hill is overwhelmed with gratitude. This heartwarming story teaches kids to respect God’s leaders, work together, and look for creative ways to say “thank you.”

Talk about it:

• Why is it important to appreciate the people who serve at church?
• How did the kids keep the party a secret and solve the parking problem?

Korah is unhappy that he is not a priest, so he convinces Dathan, Abiram, and many leaders to challenge Moses and Aaron. Moses prays and tells everyone to bring bowls of incense so God can show whom He has chosen. The next day, God stops the rebellion: the ground opens under the ringleaders, fire falls on the 250 men with incense, and a disease spreads among the crowd until Aaron runs with his incense to save the people. Finally, God makes Aaron’s walking stick blossom with flowers and almonds so everyone knows He chose Aaron to serve. This story teaches why jealousy is dangerous, why God’s work is holy, and how He wants us to trust His choices with humble hearts.

Talk about it:

• Why was Korah unhappy, and what did he want?
• How did Moses and Aaron respond when people were angry?
• What did Aaron’s blossoming stick show everyone?

Jenny and Willie can hardly contain their excitement when a pink letter arrives from Mrs. Socks, the editor of Primary Treasure, announcing she will visit their church and gather everyone’s favorite animal stories. But when they call their friends, no one believes them. On Sabbath, the class is stunned to see Mrs. Socks standing beside their teacher, and the group learns how it feels to share good news that others doubt. Jenny and Willie’s experience points to a bigger lesson from Joshua and Caleb—choosing to trust what God has promised even when others don’t.

Talk about it:

• Why didn’t Jenny and Willie’s friends believe them at first?

After many days at Mount Sinai, Israel follows God’s cloud toward the Promised Land. Joshua and Caleb urge everyone to trust God’s promise, yet the people complain. God forgives them, but that unbelieving generation must wander for forty years, and only Joshua and Caleb will enter the land. A powerful reminder to choose faith over fear and believe what God has said.

When God’s special tent was finished, He chose helpers to care for it. Moses called the people together and showed that Aaron would be the high priest, with special clothes that jingled with tiny bells and a shining breastplate with twelve jewels. The Levites would pack, carry, and set up the tent wherever God led. Aaron’s sons lit sweet incense from God’s holy fire, reminding everyone of His promise to send Jesus to save us. But two sons disobeyed and used their own fire, teaching the people the wrong lesson about God’s holiness. God wants loving obedience because His work is special, and He keeps His promise to rescue us through Jesus.

Talk about it:

Bible Text:
When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, “Come, make us gods[a] who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.” Aaron answered them, “Take off the gold earrings that your wives, your sons and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me.” So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron. He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, “These are your gods,[b] Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.”When Aaron saw this, he built an altar in front of the calf and announced, “Tomorrow there will be a festival to the Lord.”So the next day the people rose early and sacrificed burnt offerings and presented fellowship offerings.Afterward they sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.

Bible Text:
Then Moses went up to God, and the Lord called to him from the mountain and said, “This is what you are to say to the descendants of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of Israel:  ‘You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine,  you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.” So Moses went back and summoned the elders of the people and set before them all the words the Lord had commanded him to speak.  The people all responded together, “We will do everything the Lord has said.” So Moses brought their answer back to the Lord.

In this episode as Mrs. Shue takes her young students on an adventure through the desert with a lesson from the Bible. Learn how the Israelites faced the challenge of finding water and discover the surprising twist at the end of the story. Plus, find out how the Shoebox Kids handle their own thirst on a hot day at the sand dunes. Will they find relief? Listen to find out!

Bible Text:
The whole Israelite community set out from the Desert of Sin, traveling from place to place as the Lord commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. So they quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.”Moses replied, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you put the Lord to the test?”But the people were thirsty for water there, and they grumbled against Moses. They said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst?” Then Moses cried out to the Lord, “What am I to do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me.” The Lord answered Moses, “Go out in front of the people. Take with you some of the elders of Israel and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go.  I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb.Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel.  And he called the place Massah[a] and Meribah[b] because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the Lord saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”

Bible Text:
Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea and God, with a terrific east wind all night long, made the sea go back. He made the sea dry ground. The seawaters split. The Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground with the waters a wall to the right and to the left. The Egyptians came after them in full pursuit, every horse and chariot and driver of Pharaoh racing into the middle of the sea. It was now the morning watch. God looked down from the Pillar of Fire and Cloud on the Egyptian army and threw them into a panic. He clogged the wheels of their chariots; they were stuck in the mud. The Egyptians said, “Run from Israel! God is fighting on their side and against Egypt!” God said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea and the waters will come back over the Egyptians, over their chariots, over their horsemen.”

Bible Text:
God said to Moses: “Pharaoh is a stubborn man. He refuses to release the people. First thing in the morning, go and meet Pharaoh as he goes down to the river. At the shore of the Nile take the staff that turned into a snake and say to him, ‘God, the God of the Hebrews, sent me to you with this message, “Release my people so that they can worship me in the wilderness.” So far you haven’t listened. This is how you’ll know that I am God. I am going to take this staff that I’m holding and strike this Nile River water: The water will turn to blood; the fish in the Nile will die; the Nile will stink; and the Egyptians won’t be able to drink the Nile water.’”

Bible Text:
After that Moses and Aaron approached Pharaoh. They said, “God, the God of Israel, says, ‘Free my people so that they can hold a festival for me in the wilderness.’” Pharaoh said, “And who is God that I should listen to him and send Israel off? I know nothing of this so-called ‘God’ and I’m certainly not going to send Israel off.” They said, “The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Let us take a three-day journey into the wilderness so we can worship our God lest he strike us with either disease or death.” But the king of Egypt said, “Why on earth, Moses and Aaron, would you suggest the people be given a holiday? Back to work!” Pharaoh went on, “Look, I’ve got all these people freeloading, and now you want to reward them with time off?”

Bible Text:
A man from the family of Levi married a Levite woman. The woman became pregnant and had a son. She saw there was something special about him and hid him. She hid him for three months. When she couldn’t hide him any longer she got a little basket-boat made of papyrus, waterproofed it with tar and pitch, and placed the child in it. Then she set it afloat in the reeds at the edge of the Nile.
The baby’s older sister found herself a vantage point a little way off and watched to see what would happen to him. Pharaoh’s daughter came down to the Nile to bathe; her maidens strolled on the bank. She saw the basket-boat floating in the reeds and sent her maid to get it. She opened it and saw the child—a baby crying! Her heart went out to him. She said, “This must be one of the Hebrew babies.”
Then his sister was before her: “Do you want me to go and get a nursing mother from the Hebrews so she can nurse the baby for you?”
Pharaoh’s daughter said, “Yes. Go.” The girl went and called the child’s mother.
Pharaoh’s daughter told her, “Take this baby and nurse him for me. I’ll pay you.” The woman took the child and nursed him.

Bible Text:
Then Joseph could not control himself before all those who stood by him. He cried, “Make everyone go out from me.” So no one stayed with him when Joseph made himself known to his brothers.  And he wept aloud, so that the Egyptians heard it, and the household of Pharaoh heard it.  And Joseph said to his brothers, “I am Joseph! Is my father still alive?” But his brothers could not answer him, for they were dismayed at his presence.

Bible Text:
Ten of Joseph’s brothers went down to Egypt to get food. Jacob didn’t send Joseph’s brother Benjamin with them; he was afraid that something bad might happen to him. So Israel’s sons joined everyone else that was going to Egypt to buy food, for Canaan, too, was hit hard by the famine.
Joseph was running the country; he was the one who gave out rations to all the people. When Joseph’s brothers arrived, they treated him with honor, bowing to him. Joseph recognized them immediately, but treated them as strangers and spoke roughly to them.

Have you ever done something that you instantly regret but find it hard to apologize for because you still believe you are right? In our story today, Maria has a dream that helps her realize that she needed to apologize to her little sister for hurting her.

Bible Text:
Jacob left Beersheba and went to Haran. He came to a certain place and camped for the night since the sun had set. He took one of the stones there, set it under his head and lay down to sleep. And he dreamed: A stairway was set on the ground and it reached all the way to the sky; angels of God were going up and going down on it.

Then God was right before him, saying, “I am God, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. I’m giving the ground on which you are sleeping to you and to your descendants. Your descendants will be as the dust of the Earth; they’ll stretch from west to east and from north to south. All the families of the Earth will bless themselves in you and your descendants. Yes. I’ll stay with you, I’ll protect you wherever you go, and I’ll bring you back to this very ground. I’ll stick with you until I’ve done everything I promised you.”

Jacob woke up from his sleep. He said, “God is in this place—truly. And I didn’t even know it!” He was terrified. He whispered in awe, “Incredible. Wonderful. Holy. This is God’s House. This is the Gate of Heaven.”

Yes. Have lied to your mom and dad and then felt super icky afterwards? In our story today, Sammy learns a lesson about telling the truth.

Bible Text:
"The boys grew up, and Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the open country, while Jacob was content to stay at home among the tents. Isaac, who had a taste for wild game, loved Esau, but Rebekah loved Jacob.  Once when Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau came in from the open country, famished.  He said to Jacob, “Quick, let me have some of that red stew! I’m famished!” (That is why he was also called Edom. Jacob replied, “First sell me your birthright.”
“Look, I am about to die,” Esau said. “What good is the birthright to me?”
But Jacob said, “Swear to me first.” So he swore an oath to him, selling his birthright to Jacob.
Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew. He ate and drank, and then got up and left.
So Esau despised his birthright."

Have you ever needed help finding something and finally thought about praying and asking God for help? In today's story, DeeDee is reminded of the story of Abraham's servant and the prayer that he asked God for help.

Bible Text:
"The servant took ten of his master’s camels and, loaded with gifts from his master, traveled to Aram Naharaim and the city of Nahor. Outside the city, he made the camels kneel at a well. It was evening, the time when the women came to draw water. He prayed, “O God, God of my master Abraham, make things go smoothly this day; treat my master Abraham well! As I stand here by the spring while the young women of the town come out to get water, let the girl to whom I say, ‘Lower your jug and give me a drink,’ and who answers, ‘Drink, and let me also water your camels’—let her be the woman you have picked out for your servant Isaac. Then I’ll know that you’re working graciously behind the scenes for my master.” It so happened that the words were barely out of his mouth when Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel whose mother was Milcah the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother, came out with a water jug on her shoulder. The girl was stunningly beautiful, a pure virgin. She went down to the spring, filled her jug, and came back up. The servant ran to meet her and said, “Please, can I have a sip of water from your jug?” She said, “Certainly, drink!” And she held the jug so that he could drink. When he had satisfied his thirst she said, “I’ll get water for your camels, too, until they’ve drunk their fill.” She promptly emptied her jug into the trough and ran back to the well to fill it, and she kept at it until she had watered all the camels.

Have you ever had your parents tell you, "Just trust me." In our story today, Willie Teller learns the lesson about trusting his dad over his fears.

Bible Text:
"Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and gave it to Isaac his son to carry. He carried the flint and the knife. The two of them went off together. Isaac said to Abraham his father, “Father?” “Yes, my son.” “We have flint and wood, but where’s the sheep for the burnt offering?” Abraham said, “Son, God will see to it that there’s a sheep for the burnt offering.” And they kept on walking together. They arrived at the place to which God had directed him. Abraham built an altar. He laid out the wood. Then he tied up Isaac and laid him on the wood. Abraham reached out and took the knife to kill his son. Just then an angel of God called to him out of Heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!” “Yes, I’m listening.” “Don’t lay a hand on that boy! Don’t touch him! Now I know how fearlessly you fear God; you didn’t hesitate to place your son, your dear son, on the altar for me.” Abraham looked up. He saw a ram caught by its horns in the thicket. Abraham took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. Abraham named that place God-Yireh (God-Sees-to-It). That’s where we get the saying, “On the mountain of God, he sees to it.” The angel of God spoke from Heaven a second time to Abraham: “I swear—God’s sure word!—because you have gone through with this, and have not refused to give me your son, your dear, dear son, I’ll bless you—oh, how I’ll bless you! And I’ll make sure that your children flourish—like stars in the sky! like sand on the beaches! And your descendants will defeat their enemies. All nations on Earth will find themselves blessed through your descendants because you obeyed me.” Then Abraham went back to his young servants. They got things together and returned to Beersheba. Abraham settled down in Beersheba.

Have you ever been in a situation and wondered if your guardian angels were with you? In our story today, Sammy and his grandparents are protected by their guardian angels from a situation that could have ended badly.

Bible Text:
"The two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening. Lot was sitting at the city gate. He saw them and got up to welcome them, bowing before them and said, “Please, my friends, come to my house and stay the night. Wash up. You can rise early and be on your way refreshed.” They said, “No, we’ll sleep in the street.”
But he insisted, wouldn’t take no for an answer; and they relented and went home with him. Lot fixed a hot meal for them and they ate.
Before they went to bed, men from all over the city of Sodom, young and old, descended on the house from all sides and boxed them in. They yelled to Lot, “Where are the men who are staying with you for the night? Bring them out so we can have our sport with them!”
Lot went out, barring the door behind him, and said, “Brothers, please, don’t be vile! Look, I have two daughters, virgins; let me bring them out; you can take your pleasure with them, but don’t touch these men—they’re my guests.”

Has God ever placed a friend on your hear to do something nice for? In our Story today, DeeDee felt Him do just that.

Bible Text:
"Then God said to him, “This is my covenant with you: You’ll be the father of many nations. Your name will no longer be Abram, but Abraham, meaning that ‘I’m making you the father of many nations.’ I’ll make you a father of fathers—I’ll make nations from you, kings will issue from you. I’m establishing my covenant between me and you, a covenant that includes your descendants, a covenant that goes on and on and on, a covenant that commits me to be your God and the God of your descendants. And I’m giving you and your descendants this land where you’re now just camping, this whole country of Canaan, to own forever. And I’ll be their God.”

Do you know what tithe is? In our story today, Jenny learns the reason that God asks for us to return 10% back to Him.

Bible Text:
"The Valley of Siddim was full of tar pits. When the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, they fell into the tar pits, but the rest escaped into the mountains. The four kings captured all the possessions of Sodom and Gomorrah, all their food and equipment, and went on their way. They captured Lot, Abram’s nephew who was living in Sodom at the time, taking everything he owned with them. A fugitive came and reported to Abram the Hebrew. Abram was living at the Oaks of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and Aner. They were allies of Abram. When Abram heard that his nephew had been taken prisoner, he lined up his servants, all of them born in his household—there were 318 of them—and chased after the captors all the way to Dan. Abram and his men split into small groups and attacked by night. They chased them as far as Hobah, just north of Damascus. They recovered all the plunder along with nephew Lot and his possessions, including the women and the people. After Abram returned from defeating Kedorlaomer and his allied kings, the king of Sodom came out to greet him in the Valley of Shaveh, the King’s Valley. Melchizedek, king of Salem, brought out bread and wine—he was priest of The High God—and blessed him:

Blessed be Abram by The High God,
    Creator of Heaven and Earth.
And blessed be The High God,
who handed your enemies over to you.

Abram gave him a tenth of all the recovered plunder.  The king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me back the people but keep all the plunder for yourself.”But Abram told the king of Sodom, “I swear to God, The High God, Creator of Heaven and Earth, this solemn oath, that I’ll take nothing from you, not so much as a thread or a shoestring. I’m not going to have you go around saying, ‘I made Abram rich.’ Nothing for me other than what the young men ate and the share of the men who went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; they’re to get their share of the plunder.”

Have you wanted to play with kids who only wanted to play what you want to play? In our story today, Chris learns that thinking about what others want is better.

Bible Text:
"God told Abram: “Leave your country, your family, and your father’s home for a land that I will show you. I’ll make you a great nation and bless you. I’ll make you famous;    you’ll be a blessing. I’ll bless those who bless you; those who curse you I’ll curse. All the families of the Earth will be blessed through you.” So Abram left just as God said, and Lot left with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran. Abram took his wife Sarai and his nephew Lot with him, along with all the possessions and people they had gotten in Haran, and set out for the land of Canaan and arrived safe and sound. Abram passed through the country as far as Shechem and the Oak of Moreh. At that time the Canaanites occupied the land. God appeared to Abram and said, “I will give this land to your children.” Abram built an altar at the place God had appeared to him. He moved on from there to the hill country east of Bethel and pitched his tent between Bethel to the west and Ai to the east. He built an altar there and prayed to God. Abram kept moving, steadily making his way south, to the Negev. Then a famine came to the land. Abram went down to Egypt to live; it was a hard famine. As he drew near to Egypt, he said to his wife, Sarai, “Look. We both know that you’re a beautiful woman. When the Egyptians see you they’re going to say, ‘Aha! That’s his wife!’ and kill me. But they’ll let you live. Do me a favor: tell them you’re my sister. Because of you, they’ll welcome me and let me live.” When Abram arrived in Egypt, the Egyptians took one look and saw that his wife was stunningly beautiful. Pharaoh’s princes raved over her to Pharaoh. She was taken to live with Pharaoh. Because of her, Abram got along very well: he accumulated sheep and cattle, male and female donkeys, men and women servants, and camels. But God hit Pharaoh hard because of Abram’s wife Sarai; everybody in the palace got seriously sick. Pharaoh called for Abram, “What’s this that you’ve done to me? Why didn’t you tell me that she’s your wife? Why did you say, ‘She’s my sister’ so that I’d take her as my wife? Here’s your wife back—take her and get out!” Pharaoh ordered his men to get Abram out of the country. They sent him and his wife and everything he owned on their way." Genesis 12 (Message)

Have you done something that you have been told by your Mommy or Daddy to not do? Were you afraid about if they would hate you or not? In our story today, Maria learns that there is nothing she could do that would change her Daddy's love for her.

Bible Text:
"At one time, the whole Earth spoke the same language. It so happened that as they moved out of the east, they came upon a plain in the land of Shinar and settled down. They said to one another, “Come, let’s make bricks and fire them well.” They used brick for stone and tar for mortar. Then they said, “Come, let’s build ourselves a city and a tower that reaches Heaven. Let’s make ourselves famous so we won’t be scattered here and there across the Earth.” God came down to look over the city and the tower those people had built. God took one look and said, “One people, one language; why, this is only a first step. No telling what they’ll come up with next—they’ll stop at nothing! Come, we’ll go down and garble their speech so they won’t understand each other.” Then God scattered them from there all over the world. And they had to quit building the city. That’s how it came to be called Babel, because there God turned their language into “babble.” From there God scattered them all over the world." Genesis 11:1-9 (Message)

Did you know that some people do not believe in the flood or even that God created the world in a week? In our story today, Willie learns, from his dad, how to prove that the flood did take place.

Bible Text:
"After forty days Noah opened a window he had made in the ark and sent out a raven, and it kept flying back and forth until the water had dried up from the earth.  Then he sent out a dove to see if the water had receded from the surface of the ground.  But the dove could find nowhere to perch because there was water over all the surface of the earth; so it returned to Noah in the ark. He reached out his hand and took the dove and brought it back to himself in the ark.  He waited seven more days and again sent out the dove from the ark.  When the dove returned to him in the evening, there in its beak was a freshly plucked olive leaf! Then Noah knew that the water had receded from the earth.  He waited seven more days and sent the dove out again, but this time it did not return to him. By the first day of the first month of Noah’s six hundred and first year, the water had dried up from the earth. Noah then removed the covering from the ark and saw that the surface of the ground was dry.  By the twenty-seventh day of the second month the earth was completely dry. Then God said to Noah,  “Come out of the ark, you and your wife and your sons and their wives." Genesis 8: 6-16 (Message)

Have you ever been asked to do something you know is wrong. In our story today, Willie learns that it doesn't matter what people might call you because being honest thing is the right thing to do.

Bible Text:
"Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God.Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham and Japheth. Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence. God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways.  So God said to Noah, “I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth. So make yourself an ark of cypress wood; make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out. This is how you are to build it: The ark is to be three hundred cubits long, fifty cubits wide and thirty cubits high. Make a roof for it, leaving below the roof an opening one cubit high all around. Put a door in the side of the ark and make lower, middle and upper decks.I am going to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens, every creature that has the breath of life in it. Everything on earth will perish. But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark—you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you.” Genesis 6, 7, 8, & 9 (NIV)

Bible Text:
"Adam made love to his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, “With the help of the Lord I have brought forth a man.” Later she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.  Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.” Genesis 4 (NIV)

Have your parents ever asked you to wait until they are there to do something that you really want to do? In our story today, Chris finds out why his dad wanted him to wait until he was there to go sledding down a certain hill.

Bible Text:
"Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,  but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’” “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman.  “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirablefor gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.  Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LordGod as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.  But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?” Genesis 3 (NIV)

Have you ever thought of how you celebrate the Sabbath? Do you and your family go to church? Do you invite friends home for dinner and maybe a hike in the afternoon? Have you ever celebrated it like a Birthday? In our story today, the Shoebox Kids decided to do just that.

Bible Text:
"Heaven and Earth were finished, down to the last detail. By the seventh day God had finished his work. On the seventh day he rested from all his work. God blessed the seventh day. He made it a Holy Day because on that day he rested from his work, all the creating God had done. This is the story of how it all started, of Heaven and Earth when they were created."
