Changing Drinking Fountains - #124

“For my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water.” (Jeremiah 2:13)

Turning to anything other than God for your satisfaction is literally wasting your life on that which will not (because it cannot) satisfy. It’s like pouring fresh, life-saving water into a broken pitcher. Whatever is put into that pitcher just comes leaking out because the pitcher is incapable of containing what’s inside.

If you’re anything like I was, I tried a lot of different sources and resources to find help with my sexual addiction. I wanted to “fix it” on my own. When that didn’t work, I tried going to a few different counselors. Nothing helped me. I floundered in my failure to eradicate this issue in my life. I was convinced that no one truly understood my struggles, my fears, or my frustrations. So, I came to a powerful (albeit very wrong) conclusion that I was beyond help and therefore beyond hope. God’s Word says otherwise.

From there, it’s a simple step into thinking about all the pleasures sin can afford – and you allow yourself to think about those things apart from the absolute truth of God’s Word. What is the purpose of a guard? A guard keeps watch for the enemy. He understands that the enemy is near, intent on his destruction. A good guard knows that the enemy could attack at any moment. The guard is posted to protect the camp, sounding the alarm, and giving the call to arms when the enemy approaches. An effective guard is always on high alert.

2 Corinthians 2:11 tells us that “We are not unaware of (Satan’s) schemes.” In other words, we already know his operating method. He’s been using the same tactics for centuries. That means you don’t have to go into battle against your spiritual foe ignorant of the tactics he’s going to use against you.

We saw in last week’s episode that Satan attacks your mind with lies to turn you against God’s will. Satan hates God. Therefore, to attack God, Satan choses to attack the one part of God’s creation that means the most to Him – YOU!

If you were to look closely at my thumb you would not see even a hint of green to it (except for maybe the time I hit it with the hammer). If I want something to grow in my garden, I typically go to the nearest gardening supply store and pick up a handy-dandy bottle of stuff to sprinkle on my plants. Voilà—they grow—it’s a miracle!

Why can’t I do that with my spiritual life? It feels like I’m constantly growing the weeds of sin instead of the fruit of righteousness. Wouldn’t it be great if we could just go to church on Sunday, have the pastor sprinkle some Spiritual Miracle-Grow onto our hearts, and voilà, we mature and produce godliness?

As long as you take breath, King Me is going to hound you. The King loves the throne. The King craves the attention. The King will fight you tooth and nail to hold on to the title as king of your heart & life.

Dethroning King Me isn’t just a one-and-done thing. King Me won’t go away that easily. You can’t just wake up one morning and say, “Okay, Your Highness, strike three, you’re outta here!” It doesn’t work that way. It would be nice—great, even—but unh, unh, not gonna happen. Dethroning, and deposing King Me isn’t going to be easy. However, it can be done, and it’s worth the fight.

The almighty, unchanging, all powerful, creator of the universe – God Himself - cares about you! In Psalm 8:4 David asks of God, “What is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?” In other words, How can the Holy, Almighty, Perfect and Sinless God of the Universe possibly care about me when I am such a screw-up?

As hard as that may be to grasp, the fact is: God loves you with an everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3) and God demonstrated that love for you when He “gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

All too often we approach the Bible as we would a buffet table. We pick and choose which passages of Scripture we want to read. We sample it. We “taste” it. If we like it, we’ll linger. If we don’t, we move on.

We need to cry out, “Oh how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day.” We need to get to the point where you shout out “the law of (God’s) mouth is better to me than thousands of gold and silver pieces.” In other words, God’s Word is better to me than all the lustful thoughts and fantasies I could ever think or dream! God’s Word is better to me than any pop or rush that porn or masturbation could ever provide!

In Romans 6:21 Paul asks: “What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of?!”

What is the “benefit” your soul gets when you choose to give in to the sinful, selfish desires of the flesh? What is the “benefit” your soul gets from choosing daily to deny what your flesh wants and instead fully surrender your heart to God?

Only your flesh “benefits” from giving in to your sinful temptations – not your soul. Any “gain” (if you want to call it that) is temporary, short-lived, and eternally worthless.

Episode 6 - Sinful, Sad and Sorrowful

When you choose to do what is wrong, choosing to do what you shouldn't instead of choosing to do what you should - what are the consequences?

Choose to lust, look at porn, masturbate; choose to worship King Me, run after another god instead of the true God and you will experience the absence of genuine joy and perfect peace. You will know nothing but sorrow and sadness. That’s a fact of Scripture, and a painful reality of life.

“You shall have no other gods before me.” (Exodus 20:3)

God is saying that nothing, absolutely nothing and no one is to be worshiped other than Himself - ever. He alone is God. He alone is worthy of our worship. When King Me is sitting on the throne of your heart, you are worshiping King Me. Not God. Self.

In this episode we will discover from Scripture how to make the right choices and experience the peace, joy, happiness, and genuine satisfaction that only God can give.

Freedom from sexual impurity - victory over the 3-headed dragon of lust, porn, and masturbation sometimes feels like a mountain too high to climb and a wall too wide to go around and too solid to punch through.

This journey to purity can be difficult and even a bit challenging at times. You find yourself doing things you’re not used to doing. You are trying to give up things that don’t want to be abandoned. There are moments where you may be tempted to just quit altogether. You find yourself wanting to give up and give in once-and-for-all to the overwhelming and relentless temptations that have been hounding you for months – maybe even years. I know, I’ve been there.

Oh, my friend, God is speaking to you right now. Are you hearing Him? Yes, this may seem like a monumental task you are facing. A journey too hard to make. I know I sure felt that way. But God is saying to you, “don’t let that overwhelm you! Don’t be anxious about this.” Why? Because God will not just give you the strength you need to get through this, He will help you overcome it. And He will not just help you, He will hold you up when you feel like you just can’t go any further. You’re not alone. Your Creator, your Savior, your Heavenly Father and best friend – the Almighty, all-powerful, Most Holy God of the Universe is on your side. In fact, He’s right by your side even now!
