On any given night in America, more than 500,000 people are experiencing homelessness. 70% are individuals living on their own or in the company of other homeless adults. 30% are families with children. The great majority of homeless are men or youth boys, and almost half of the population is unsheltered and living in situations not fit for human beings. (“State of Homelessness Report 2021.” www.endhomelessness.org)

The thing is, we know there is no silver bullet, no single answer or even two or three things that will solve the problem of homelessness. The causes are many and complicated, multiple and complex, and range from mental illness to addiction, from disabilities to lack of affordable housing, from a history of racial injustice to the system itself.

For my brother it was a story of what it was like to keep up in a world that moved too fast.

I don't know much or even close to everything I should, but I do know this: your motherhood status, whatever it may be or whatever state it is in, is NOT the only thing that defines you. You, Me, We, are so much more than that!

So,  regardless of the choices we've made or where we're at in our journey, let's take this Mother's Day to support, encourage and be kind to each other. Happy Mother's Day.

But that's okay...I know the people who need the story and the lessons in it will find it, and Bobby found his home another way.

I recently saw the new movie, Jesus Revolution,  which not only brought up my fascination with Hippies, but also reminded me of the time when the Jesus Revolution saved my family.

To me it makes perfect sense that these two cultures collided in such a powerful way. Hippies were searching for truth, love, peace where all are welcome as they are. Jesus offered all of those things, and still does.

When it comes to discussing difficult topics, we're taught from a young age to avoid those that hold a lot of power and passion for us at all costs. Polarizing topics like race, politics, religion...

All this avoiding has left us with a significant gap in the skills we need to really share this human experience and SEE each other. Often when these topics come up we stonewall in defense to a perceived threat. We avoid it because we don’t know HOW to do it in a way that is respectful, loving, kind and productive.

 So how do we do that? How do we get beyond ourselves? How do we SEE more than what’s on the surface? How do we SEE through the hurt, the anger, the disagreement, the misunderstanding of others and ourselves? How do we SEE through perhaps our own past, our own mistakes, our own misjudgments, misunderstandings, and way of thinking? How do we stop being defensive and start being See-through?

In episode 4, I introduced a concept, an acronym, that I call SEE and it is a sixth sense that we can develop to train ourselves to really see each other.

ü  Stop.  Pause. Take a breath, a beat, a moment, before you do or say something impatient or hurtful, take a moment to consider.

ü  Evaluate: Ask questions. Be curious. Could there be more than what I see on the surface? Could I be wrong?

ü  Empathize: Find a way in to the feeling. Figure out an angle to put yourself in their shoes. Commit to understand and sharing the feelings rather than dismissing them.

Let's move ourselves from Stonewall to SEE-through.

We need to be on the lookout and extend a hand if we can.

Drowning can sneak up on you. In movies and television, drowning people are obvious. Screaming, flailing arms waving in the air, someone hears their cries and jumps in to rescue them, just in time.  In real life, people drown silently. Because they cannot breathe, they cannot make a sound. Their body shuts down, not allowing their arms to raise high above the water. Lifeguards and other experts are trained to look for the swimmers who suddenly stop moving, who are not raising their hands, whose heads seem to bob above and below the water, without a sound. 

We can’t always see when someone around us is  struggling, caught in a rip tide, strength used up, unable to remember that swimming parallel to shore is the way out. We must look for those struggling silently. We can’t rely on other people to do the rescuing.  Lifeguards aren’t always on duty. Sometimes it’s the people on the beach who can save a life.

Alice Walker once said, “Activism is the rent we pay for living on the planet.”  Archbishop Desmond Tutu said, “If we are neutral in situations of injustice, we have chosen the side of the oppressor.”

In this episode of All There Is,  Afua Boahene  explains that activism is the work we are all called to do in order to "repair what's been broken in the world" and that  "Activism is the pathway back to the world as it was originally planned."

It takes courage. It takes risk. It takes community and connectivity. The work of activism can be accomplished through art, writing, teaching, bearing witness, asking questions, demanding transparency, interrogating structures and policies and through the consistent and progressive practice of making things possible and creating pathways that widen spaces and open doors that create equity and justice for all. It is having the conviction and desire to see the moral arc of the universe bend toward justice.

After all, "just saying I believe in an equal world without doing anything actually doesn't help."

What is ACTIVISM?

Alice Walker once said, “Activism is the rent we pay for living on the planet.”  Archbishop Desmond Tutu said, “If we are neutral in situations of injustice, we have chosen the side of the oppressor.”

In this episode of All There Is,  Afua Boahene  explains that activism is the work we are all called to do in order to "repair what's been broken in the world" and that  "Activism is the pathway back to the world as it was originally planned."

It takes courage. It takes risk. It takes community and connectivity. The work of activism can be accomplished through art, writing, teaching, bearing witness, asking questions, demanding transparency, interrogating structures and policies and through the consistent and progressive practice of making things possible and creating pathways that widen spaces and open doors that create equity and justice for all. It is having the conviction and desire to see the moral arc of the universe bend toward justice.

After all, "just saying I believe in an equal world without doing anything actually doesn't help."

Polarizing topics like race, politics, religion...

All this avoiding has left us with a significant gap in the skills we need to really share this human experience and SEE each other. Often when these topics come up we stonewall in defense to a perceived threat. We avoid it because we don’t know HOW to do it in a way that is respectful, loving, kind and productive.

 So how do we do that? How do we get beyond ourselves? How do we SEE more than what’s on the surface? How do we SEE through the hurt, the anger, the disagreement, the misunderstanding of others and ourselves? How do we SEE through perhaps our own past, our own mistakes, our own misjudgments, misunderstandings, and way of thinking? How do we stop being defensive and start being See-through?

In episode 4, I introduced a concept, an acronym, that I call SEE and it is a sixth sense that we can develop to train ourselves to really see each other.

ü  Stop.  Pause. Take a breath, a beat, a moment, before you do or say something impatient or hurtful, take a moment to consider.

ü  Evaluate: Ask questions. Be curious. Could there be more than what I see on the surface? Could I be wrong?

ü  Empathize: Find a way in to the feeling. Figure out an angle to put yourself in their shoes. Commit to understand and sharing the feelings rather than dismissing them.

Let's move ourselves from Stonewall to SEE-through.
