His mission is to bridge the digital divide and create opportunities for young people in rural communities to access the economic and social benefits of technology.

Recognition for Martinez's work includes: 2020 James Irvine Foundation Leadership Award, the Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation Entrepreneur Fellowship, 2024 UC Santa Cruz Alumni Achievement Award, and the 2015 Entrepreneur of the Year for Santa Cruz County, among others. Bio

Casey Coonerty Protti is the second-generation owner of Bookshop Santa Cruz located in the heart of downtown Santa Cruz for over 59 years. Casey received a BA from the University of California at Berkeley, a MPA from Harvard University and a MBA from Northwestern University. Casey returned to Santa Cruz to run daily operations of Bookshop Santa Cruz in 2006 after working in the nonprofit field and serving as a consultant for the American Bookseller’s Association. Besides raising her two children and trying to read and travel as much as possible, Casey served on the Downtown Commission of Santa Cruz and the boards of the Santa Cruz Downtown Association, the Santa Cruz Education Foundation, The Independent Booksellers Consortium, The Women's Educational Success Program at Cabrillo College and the Alliance of Women Entrepreneurs.

 Bio
I moved to Santa Cruz from Chicago in 2007 to pursue a PhD in ecology and evolutionary biology with a designated emphasis in environmental science from UC-Santa Cruz, which I received in 2013.  My work has largely focused on invasive species eradication in places such as Panama and the Galapagos, sustainable fisheries science, tropical forest restoration, assessing the impacts of climate change on the environment, and diversity, equity, and inclusion in environmental conservation. After a brief post-doc in Miami, I returned to Santa Cruz in 2015 to co-found and direct the UC-Santa Cruz Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program, whose mission is to prepare college students from diverse backgrounds to become the next generation of conservation leaders.  

In Santa Cruz, I witnessed and experienced the impacts of the exorbitant housing market. I got involved in a rent control measure campaign and was one of the highest signature gatherers to place the measure on the 2018 ballot. This, along with a commitment to community engagement, prompted me to run for city council. In 2018, I was the highest vote recipient and became one of two African American men voted onto the Santa Cruz City Council for the first time in history. In 2020 I became the first African American man to serve as Mayor of the City of Santa Cruz. In 2022, I was elected to the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors as the Third District Supervisor. 

During my time on the council, I focused on sustainable community growth, increasing affordable housing, reducing carbon emissions, public safety reform, amplifying the voices of marginalized community members, connecting people to resources during the pandemic, and most importantly bringing our community together to make Santa Cruz better for everyone.

About Rebecca Hernandez
Rebecca Hernandez, PhD (she/her), is the new Community Archivist at the UCSC University Library where she partners with local stakeholders to promote the acquisition, preservation, and use of archival materials that document the communities of Santa Cruz County. She has worked in higher education administration for over 15 years. Rebecca served as Director of the UCSC American Indian Resource Center from 2014-2021, where together with the team, she created successful collaborative programs across campus including the People of Color Sustainability Collective and the UCSC Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Series. She holds an MFA in Design from CSU Fullerton, is a graduate of the UCLA American Indian Studies MA Program and earned her PhD in American Studies at the University of New Mexico.  Rebecca is a member of the Rise Together this year. Rise Together is an intercultural coalition of 32 members, led by People of Color and working collaboratively to advance racial equity in Santa Cruz County.

Application Deadline: May 1, 2023.
Location: The Central Coast Region (Monterey, Santa Cruz, San Benito, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties).
Eligibility: Nonprofit/fiscally sponsored organizations, Government agencies, Tribal government.
Amount:  $140,000 in funding for One year (9/23-8/24). $100,000 goes to the  artists.

About Jim  Brown
Executive Director since 2020, Jim works with the entire Arts Council Santa Cruz County team to advance our mission. He is involved in every aspect of the organization from fundraising and finance to long-term strategic planning and overseeing our programs.

Jim served as the Executive Director of both the Diversity Center and the 418 Project before joining the Arts Council as Grants Program Manager in 2012. He served as Program Officer and Grants Manager at Community Foundation Santa Cruz County, before returning to the Arts Council in 2017, as Deputy and Tannery Director, to work more closely with the arts community.

A former software engineer, Jim has followed his dedication to building communities that support authentic self-expression. Alyssa grew up in a low-income town in rural Oregon with a single mom who works harder than anyone she knows. Alyssa's big break was being offered a full ride to college - a dream Alyssa  always had, but didn't know was in the cards for her. Alyssa's mom wasn't a voter until recently and she lived in a middle-of-nowhere bubble, so she didn't know there was anything people like her could do to make a difference in the world until someone stopped her on the street in college and asked Alyssa if she wanted to help save the sea turtles. Of course she did! By the time Alyssa graduated, she was the president of a policy advocacy student group and was overseeing 3 campaigns. She graduated and was hired on to the presidential election for Elizabeth Warren - the campaign trail was a dream come true. She was crushed when she lost, but soon joined Biden's campaign and got to win! About Talicia
Talicia Brown-Crowell moved  to Eugene in 2000.  For more than 20 years, Talicia has worked in public health, staffed rites-of-passage for Black folks in Memphis, and built her successful Black-owned business, Harmony Massage, in Eugene, Oregon.

Her work is inspired by the mentorship of two dearly beloved people in her life.  Her best friend of 17 years, Bob Dritz, was the clinic coordinator of White Bird Clinic in Eugene for 25 years and the founder of CAHOOTS, of international renown.  Sobonfu Somé, Talicia’s spiritual teacher for 8 years, is known as the world’s foremost authority in African spirituality.   

After years of attending predominately white music festivals, and then getting to experience Black-centered cultural spaces and Brown family reunions in Gurdon, Arkansas, Talicia has a deep desire to create safe and connected events that center Blackness.
Leading to the question she continuously asks herself  “What would a cultural festival look like today, in this place, that centers Black people, and is for us, by us?”  The Black Cultural Festival which she has founded is her answer to that question.

Andy is Chief of Police in Santa Cruz, California. He previously served as chief of police in Eureka, California and as a lieutenant in the San Diego Police Department where he practiced, supervised, and taught problem-oriented policing since it was first introduced to his agency in the early 1990’s. Our guest has managed one patrol team that won the Herman Goldstein Award for Excellence in Problem-Oriented Policing and three other teams that were finalists. His work in the field has been included in several publications produced by PERF and the COPS Office. Mills was the 2000 recipient of the Police Executive Research Forum’s national Gary P. Hayes award for his contributions to improving the quality of police service. Our guest has published articles on police leadership, problem-solving and police ethics in Problem Solving Quarterly, Law Enforcement News and several National Institute of Justice publications. He frequently lectures at conferences and has provided training to scores of police agencies, including agencies in Washington, D.C., Houston, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Rio de Janeiro. He has also taught for the University of Delaware police leadership program.

About Thomas

In high school, a mentor asked Thomas what his purpose was in life. Thomas wrote down “To help people with music”. That phrase has been the seed that has grown into who he is today. Along the way, Thomas has been an explorer of life, pursuing different passions and ideas in order to understand what his purpose is on this planet. From living in a tent in the woods, to working and living on an organic farm, he has followed his passions wherever they led him. 

The path eventually led him to music and psychology. He began to explore being a professional musician and composer, but realized that this was not the path for him. He went back to school for psychology, and worked as a Residential Counselor for adults with mental health disorders. 

Through the experience of being a counselor, Thomas fully realized his passion for holding space for people and helping guide them to their fullest potential. He eventually returned to music, and found teaching, which allowed him to use his talents as both a counselor and a musician in order to help people. 

This led him to found Everyone’s Music School, with the mission to create positive and lasting change in people’s lives using music education. Using the skills he refined as a counselor, he coaches and trains his teachers at the music school to help them build real connections with their students, and to show them how to truly find a place where music can live within them.

As a mixed-race black man who was raised in a white conservative family in a small, white majority town, race has always been part of Thomas’s identity, but it was not until 2018 that he started to look more deeply at the issue. He finally began to explore what blackness was, and his own history.

In 2019 he attended an event called “The Unapologetically Black Art Show”, which would be a turning point in his life. The night was an awakening for him, making him aware of a part of himself he had been suppressing for his whole life. He signed up that night to go to Selma, Alabama, to be trained as a Kingian nonviolence trainer, as well as to gain a greater understanding of black culture in the USA.  

During his trip, he learned a lot about the culture of this country, as well as a lot about black history that he had not been taught in school. He came back with a mission to help fight systemic racism in the US using the tools of MLK, Gandhi and Thoreau.

This experience influenced him to start Speak For Change Podcast, with the mission to inspire and promote positive change and growth in the world. The podcast is centered around in-depth conversations with leaders, activists, artists, and other people who are in the arena of life, actively doing things to promote positive change. 

Thomas  currently lives with his wife in the Santa Cruz Mountains. He is The CEO/Founder of Everyone’s Music School, Founder & Host of Speak For Change Podcast, a Kingian Nonviolence Trainer, A member of the Steering committee for The Santa Cruz County Black Coalition of Racial Justice and Equity, A member of the SC Equity Collab , writer, mentor, Artist and Speaker

About Sara

Originally planning to be a theater major, Sara went through some personal struggles and decided instead to focus on academia, earning a B.A. in communication studies from Cal State Long Beach in 2007. However, Sara’s deep connection with music was not to be suppressed, as she found a passion for collecting rare 60’s vinyl, and worked as a DJ in some of the hippest clubs in L.A. for 3 years. She was deeply inspired by the music of the 60’s, and played in popular garage rock bands around Southern California, until scoring her first professional singing gig in Asia. Sara toured around Asia for almost 2 years, gigging with different bands and soaking up the culture in China, Malaysia, and Indonesia.When she came back to the States, her vocal chops were primed and ready for pro level action. Sara has been working full time as a live and session singer ever since. In 2015, she was featured on a track by an Australian DJ that reached number 6 on the Billboard Dance Chart. She sings live at clubs in Orange County and L.A. every weekend and is in high demand as a session singer, working with epic greats such as David Foster. Sara is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in voice, and hopes to teach in the music department at a university one day, so she can give back and inspire others about her favorite thing in the world- music

About Ashanti

Ashanti Branch, was raised by a single mother on welfare in Oakland, went on to study engineering at California Polytechnic - San Luis Obispo. A Civil Engineer in his first career, Ashanti found his passion for teaching while tutoring struggling students. In 2004, as a first year teacher, Ashanti started The Ever Forward Club to provide a support group for African American and Latino males, who were not achieving to the level of their potential. The Ever Forward Club has helped 100% of its members graduate high school.  Branch is on a mission to change the way that students interact with their education and the way schools interact with students.

Norwood Pennewell (Rehearsal Director/Assistant to Mr. Fagan) who joined Garth Fagan Dance in 1978, is the quintessential Garth Fagan dancer and Fagan’s assistant and muse. Pennewell is a recipient of a 1988 Bessie Award and has had several major works created for him, including Passion Distanced, Time After Before Place, and Moth Dreams, among others. Pennewell’s dancing has been seen on PBS’s Great Performances, The Tonight Show, and Duke Ellington’s Queenie Pie. In 1994, he was invited to perform in the 66th Annual Academy Awards broadcast. Pennewell teaches both company and masterclasses for Garth Fagan Dance. He assisted Fagan during his work on Broadway’s The Lion King and the NYC Ballet 50th anniversary Ellington Project. Pennewell had his first choreographed premiere in 2010 with Hylozoic and presented Liminal Flux in 2011. Pennewell has choreographed seven works for Garth Fagan Dance: Hylozoic (2010), Liminal Flux (2011), Gin (2013), After Hours (2014), So You See (2015), A Moderate Cease (2016), and this year, he choreographed WeCoo Duende to critical acclaim.

About Gregory:
Gregory P Dawson, former Lines Ballet dancer, received his BA from Saint Mary’s College. In 2007, he formed dawsondancesf (ddsf) as an outlet for his choreographic goals and vision. Shortly thereafter, he created “which light in the sky is us” for Company C Contemporary Ballet (nominated for an Isadora Duncan Award for choreography) and became the Assistant Director of the California State Summer School of the Arts’ Dance Department in Southern California. In the fall of 2011, Mr. Dawson became Artistic Director of Dawson Wallace Dance Project in Denver, Colorado (formerly David Taylor Dance), where the Denver Post named him “the best choreographer in Denver.” Soon after, Dawson received a CHIME grant, partnering him with choreographic mentor Elizabeth Streb for one year. In September 2013, dawsondancesf re-established its presence in San Francisco with the world premiere of “fabricca matterasso d’argento” at Zaccho Dance Theatre. Following this, Mr. Dawson created “birds eye view” (a collaboration with the Richard Howell Quintet) for the 2014 Black Choreographers Festival, which received an Isadora Duncan Award in 2015. Also, ddsf presented “MONOCHROME” at the BAN7 Festival 2014 in San Francisco. In the Fall of 2014, Dawson premiered “in this moment” with Richard Howell. The Zellerbach Foundation-funded ddsf next premiered, “intrinsic motion project“, and this past summer 2015 ddsf completed 5th-week residency at CSSSA’s summer intensive at Cal Arts where Dawson is assistant to the Chair. In spring of 2015, ddsf premiered Intima produced by Al’myra Communication which collaborated with Ali Kaf – visuals, and Ashraf kateb – music. dawsondancesf made its debut in New York City in the Fall of 2014, at Baurch College, with a return in September 25-27 of 2015. Dawson currently teaches and choreographs for all the LINES Ballet Educational Programs.

Khafre Jay hails from Hunters Point, San Francisco. A neighborhood that stands in stark contrast to the gilded city we're used to seeing in media. His activism is deeply rooted in real communities dealing with real issues. He is at home on the humblest corner, the corporate board room, in the booth, on stage, and at the gaudiest lectern speaking truth to power.

Khafre's experience in merging activism and expressive cultural arts led him to found Hip Hop For Change, Inc. This 501c3 education organization uses Hip Hop culture to educate and advocate for social justice in the Bay Area. Khafre has impacted the world through this organization, employing almost a thousand people in his community and raising over three million dollars to advance social justice and Hip Hop activism in the Bay Area. In 2014, Khafre created THE MC program, a modular curriculum using Hip Hop history and culture to focus on healthy expression and positive identity. He has worked with over 22 thousand youth, K-12, to create healthier places for children to foster their creativity and positive identity.

Growing up in a military family had an incredible impact on how Ann Hazels experiences community, change, and space and where we call home. She exhibits nationally and has participated in Artist in Residence programs at Baltimore Clayworks, Maryland, and the Mendocino Arts Center, California. Hazels were awarded a Fellowship at Jingdezhen Sanbao Ceramic Art Institute in China in 2004. Laura graduated in 2016 from Marylhurst University in Portland Oregon with a Fine Arts degree in drawing, painting, and sculpture. She also acquired a minor in Neuropsychology. Within these microscopic spaces measuring only 20-40 nanometers across, all experience of reality and communication as we know it is made possible. The works Laura creates are artistic depictions of action potentials (thoughts) traveling from one neuron to the next through the synaptic clefts via a process called neurotransmission. Through these creations, Laura explores how neurotransmission might look within her own mind. Once a piece is presented, the viewer is responsible for generating their own interpretation. This is another form of transmission, which then leads to conversation. The goal of Laura’s art is to inspire her viewers to better understand the differences in human perspectives and to strive to see one another’s points of views more clearly. She strives to delve into the relativity of the mind in order to illuminate the endless interpretations derived from a single work of art.

Ali Weller became a Climate Reality Leader at the 2018 Mexico City training. During this time, her arctic writing was nominated for a national literary award. Ali has a background in Education, Communications, Biology, Aboriginal Law, World Literature, and a Masters degree in Environmental Studies. She lives on a farm in Soquel with 6 other women who collaboratively tend the land, grow organic food, and create soil by composting. Ali is currently looking for co-founders for a new organization: the BlueGreen Fund, which aims to scale Miyawaki-style forest restoration in North America to plant and protect millions of trees, as part of the World Economic Forum’s 1-Trillion Trees Platform.
