Torre White Garrison is the inaugural Reparations Project Director. Torre is a kaleidoscope of roles and talents: a devoted wife, loving mother, prolific author, inspiring radio host, and passionate advocate for social and racial justice, mental health, and labor union rights. In her downtime, Torre embraces the simple joys of life - from good food to thought-provoking documentaries. A true Asheville native, she delights in reading, writing, hiking, shopping, and crafting and fiercely supports buy-local ethics.

In her professional life, Torre made strides in the fight for a more just society. After a decade of Federal Government service and fueled by her passion, Torre founded TW Consulting, a mental health training and consulting firm dedicated to empowering others. She is also an active member of the United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County Community Conversations Committee, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) Young Organizing Unionists for the Next Generation (Y.O.U.N.G.) and Black Leaders Advancing Change and Knowledge (B.L.A.C.K.) committees. Torre previously served as the Co-Chair of AFGE Y.O.U.N.G., Chair of AFGE B.L.A.C.K., and on the WNC Central Labor Council E-board. Her advocacy efforts also earned her a spot on the prestigious CoThinkk Community Leader awardees list in 2021.

Guided by her understanding of America's inextricable history with racial injustice, Torre states, "It is impossible to examine the history of America and not see the intentional destruction of equality for Black people. In order to reach true equity, we must understand and embrace the importance of reparatory justice and reparations." Judon is a native of Columbia SC and a numbers guy through and through. He has over 20 years of experience as an accountant and currently holds the title of Vice President of Finance overseeing over $400 million in revenue.  His responsibility encompasses a global manufacturing footprint.  He has parlayed that passion and experience into entrepreneurship.

After graduating from Clemson with a degree in accounting and obtaining his MBA from Webster University, Judon worked his way up the corporate ladder. Starting as a staff accountant, he is now the strategic business partner to the president with multi-company responsibility.

Raymel “Ray” White, 38 year old native East Harlemite who has implanting his roots in the smallest state in the Union, Rhode Island, known as the Ocean State. Spending the majority of his childhood in Southern Maryland, he is the oldest of four to a military family that has travel and lived across the country. Prior to moving to Rhode Island in 2008, Ray worked for a Nebraska-based community bank in lending & collections before accepting an opportunity to head a Providence-based REO/Foreclosure collection law practice.

In 2011, Ray was recruited to work for one of Boston’s oldest and prominent law practice where he manages client billing and receivables for select multi-billion dollar Private Equity and Venture Capital firm clients. While working and commuting, in 2012 Ray went back to college to finish what he started. In 2018, Ray went on to graduating from Rhode Island College School of Business with a dual degree in Accounting and Finance. Shortly after graduation, he enrolled in a masters program at Providence College’s School of Continuing Education where he is currently working on his future teaching career.

An avid sports fan, traveler and semi-pro photographer, he enjoys traveling throughout Europe and the Americas with a love for portrait photography. You may find him occasionally venturing north to New Hampshire and Maine on hiking and ski excursions at the White Mountains, you could catch him relaxing down South with family and friends or he could be spending the good chunk of his time in his yard creating projects that somehow never get finished! A coastal Georgia native, Christopher Arnette was always interested in the way in which the body works. From the chemical reactions that provided the necessary energy for life, to the way in which cells interacted to function precisely, Christopher knew that a career in science was his career path. Following graduation from high school, Christopher attended Prairie View A&M University where he majored in Biology, with minors in Chemistry and Spanish. He went on to attend Vanderbilt University where he obtained his PhD in Cell and Developmental Biology. His thesis focused on cell signaling, specifically microtubule-associated protein, RASSF1A, and how it stabilized microtubules to allow for cytoskeletal crosstalk for delivery of Src during cell migration and in cancer. He went on to complete a postdoctoral fellowship at Northwestern University where he studied the cell signaling cascade initiated by loss of epidermal cadherin, desmoglein 1, and the subsequent effects on the epidermal environment, focusing on the development of a pre-melanoma niche. After his postdoctoral fellowship, Christopher worked as a scientific editor, managing a variety of journals and began an online bakery, specializing in cakes, breads, and pies. Following the events in Michigan (George Floyd) and due to the the COVID-19 pandemic, Christopher began taking a more active role in diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within the corporate space. He sat on various DEI committees and authored the company’s “Considerations for Inclusive Events” guidelines. He has since used his experience to obtain a new position as IMOD Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at a science and technology center based at the University of Washington. One of his initiatives utilizes his baking skills to bring communities from various identities together to discuss the issues that face them, as well as providing perspectives on different issues in DEI. As a result of this, he is also opening a new online bakery, The Cocoa Cake Shop, to provide his treats to a wider audience.

Cindy McMillan was born in Chicago, Ill and spent most of her teenage and adulthood in the Sunshine State of Florida. Cindy became a resident of Asheville NC in 2012. She’s an amazing mother of four who has experienced infant loss, trauma, PTSD, and SDOH shortly after the birth of her twin boys in 2002 and the death of her husband in 2018. She is currently a DONA Certified Birth Doula, Lamaze Trained Childbirth Educator, Certified breastfeeding Peer Counselor, Certified North Carolina Peer Support Specialist, Trained Death and Bereavement Doula; Black Maternal Health Advocate and Community Partner as well as the newly appointed Executive Director of Sistas Caring 4 Sistas Community Based Doulas for Social Justice in Asheville NC.

Cindy’s personal experience with loss, traumatic childbirth, and maternal health inequities has made her a strong ally, advocate, and leader among those who advocate and fight for Justice and equality within Black Maternal Health to increase better outcomes through equitable methods of care and support.

Brent Bailey is the Program Coordinator for the Buncombe County Reentry Council, which provides assistance to anyone returning from prison, giving them the resources they need to overcome the challenges they face, such as housing, transportation, education and employment. Brent has been working in reentry for over 13 years. His experience as a formerly incarcerated man who served over 5 years offers him a unique perspective when it comes to navigating reentry. His greatest joy comes from helping the returning citizens of Buncombe County down the path to self-sufficiency.

Danielle is an Asheville native who has been in the beauty industry for over 30 years.
Her career started at the age of 15 in both her grandmother's and mother’s kitchens. She was known as the neighborhood hairstylist in north Asheville and west Asheville!

She is a proud graduate of Asheville High School and its vocational Cosmetology program under the tutelage and guidance of the late Mrs. Louise Edington and the late Mrs. Carolyn Trexler-Parr, both of whom mentored and groomed her for a successful career.

While competing in competitions for Asheville High’s Cosmetology program she has the privilege of meeting the late Mrs. Deborah Carol-Johnson - the owner of New Images Hair Salon. Mrs. Johnson was a judge for one of the competitions Danielle participated in; she was impressed by Danielle’s enthusiasm and attitude and decided to hire her as her assistant. She then began to mentor Danielle behind the chair for a few years.

Following that experience Danielle became an independent salon professional at J.C. &. Company with Mrs. Sandra McIntosh (still open-same owner) for nine and a half years. In March of 2000, Danielle opened her first salon - Danielle’s Upper Room Hair Studio. After three years, she relocated to the Raleigh/Durham area building a generous client base. With the untimely death of her oldest and only sister (Mom’s side), she moved back to Asheville and settled in at J.C. & Company with Miss Sandra once again!

In 2008 she reopened her salon in East Asheville for three years - afterward relocated it to its present location of 11 1/2 years (830 Hendersonville Road). Danielle recently launched her own brand of hair care in the middle of the pandemic!

Creating Community through Connection and Culture. Umoja Health, Wellness, and Justice Collective are a Black-run, grassroots nonprofit disrupting generational trauma & incarceration by teaching resiliency, building community & healing through the Arts. Every aspect of Umoja Health, Wellness, and Justice Collective seeks to create a space for individual and communal healing and is trauma-informed and culturally aligned. We use information, story, and embodied practices to build compassion, knowledge, and tools to seek and sustain healing. The foundation of all we do is grounded in HOPE (Healing Our Past/Personal/Privileged Experiences). We offer youth programming, peer-led work, and the HOPE Model to transform communities and families.
Umoja started around 2018 after founder Michael Hayes came home from prison and started to see what healing looked like.  While in prison, Michael took the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) ten-question survey and scored a perfect ten.  He spoke with a counselor and was made aware of some of the effects that having a score of ten could have on him and his life. The one that really got his attention was that he would probably live 20 years less than expected if things didn’t change. Michael also learned that this ACE score played into other things that happened in Michael’s life, like going in and out of prison, substance abuse issues, and anger issues.  Learning this wasn’t about not being accountable; it was about the answer to the questions Michael kept asking himself: “Why am I so angry all the time?” “Why am I like this?” and “what is wrong with me?”
After Michael got some training in trauma and resilience, he understood that the question that had to be asked is, “what’s happened to me?” Asking this question allowed Michael to unpack some of his traumas.  In the end, Michael wrote a 10-page story about his trauma, and the more he read it, the more healing happened.  Michael just wanted other people to really feel what he felt and see what he saw in himself.  His healing process started.
Michael invited some people over to his house to have some resiliency conversations.  He learned that some of his experiences were reflected in the experiences of others.  He saw patterns of abnormal cultural behaviors that came from culturally abnormal ways of being raised, things that look like culture but are really rooted in trauma.  “What goes on in this house stays in this house” or “don’t talk about it, pray about it.” Or the big one, “boys don’t cry.”  Michael realized through community conversations that these things were harmful and needed to change.

I am a mixed-media artist. My main mediums are acrylics, watercolors, graphic design, and photography. I was born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, a magical city full of culture and art. I lived in a few places along the way before finding a wonderful place in the mountains called Asheville, which I decided to make my home.  I believe that being creative is a way of life and I am lucky enough to do what I love every day of my life.

My style is very urban and disruptive, full of color and boldness in all the mediums I work on.

I have always loved art, one of my most dear memories is from when I was about 7 years old in an art class at school in Buenos Aires. I remember in detail all the art supplies, the kiln for ceramics, the tables, and the smells.

Art fires up my soul, and I feel like a messenger and a message is just coming through me.

Aside from art, I am an avid tennis player, cat lover, and nature adventurer. I love traveling and finding new adventures. Not all who wander are lost.

I was always the planner. I started planning at a very early age when I wanted to go to Europe on a school trip. My parents couldn’t afford to fund the whole trip so I started working at my Dad’s office after school to pay for half. This continued through high school and college and it was the running joke with all my best friends that I was the planner. They knew I was gonna have all the details worked out for whatever we had planned. 

I assumed this would translate to pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum but I was so wrong! I read books, watched videos, and tried to be super prepared for those first few weeks after our first son was born. We had our amazing doula with us for birth but we overlooked the very unexpected postpartum period. Luckily my mother was able to take a lot of time off work and be there for my husband and I as we navigated those first weeks. 

This was the beginning of my passion for doula work and the inspiration for Graywood Doula Services. I realized most people were like me, thinking they were prepared when honestly they didn’t know what would happen once home with a tiny human being while also running on less sleep than you have ever had in your life and trying to still act like you had it all together.  I became a trained birth doula and then a trained postpartum doula prior to having our second son two years later. Currently, I’m working to become a Certified Lactation Counselor as well as finishing my certification as a postpartum doula with DONA International. I truly believe everyone deserves to have nonjudgemental support during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. My goal is to support families as they navigate new transitions, new decisions, lack of sleep, and endless worries about if they are doing it right. There is an amazing network of doulas in WNC and I’m so honored to be a part of that network. 

I love living in WNC with my husband, Josh, and our two boys. Both of us went to college in WNC so we have a special bond to this area and plan to raise our boys here where we can be close to the mountains but also remain close to our family in the Charlotte area. I’m so honored to watch other families in WNC as they welcome babies into their lives and homes.

"I am so thrilled to be the Head of School at Hanger Hall in Asheville, NC! It is such a fantastic and dynamic place to be. I moved to Asheville with my family in September 2018 after having lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for 19 years.  My husband, Tom, and I are both from the East Coast originally (Tom is from upstate NY, and I am from outside of DC and PA).  We knew that we wanted to be closer to our respective families so that our daughter, Louise (Lou), could have more opportunities to see them as she grows up.  We had visited Asheville many times as we have great friends that live here and fell in love with the mountains, the rivers, the music and all that living here offers.

Previous to working at Hanger Hall, I primarily worked at schools serving students diagnosed with learning differences. I was most recently the Assistant Head of School at Compass High School in San Mateo, CA.  In addition, I have a Master’s in Counseling Psychology from the University of San Francisco and have enjoyed working with students (and their parents!) on post-secondary pursuits in a small private practice.   My undergraduate years were spent at UNC-Chapel Hill and this is where my love for NC began. I was born and raised in Asheville, NC. I grew up in South Asheville and the Shiloh community. I attended TC Roberson High School. I left Asheville for a bit to try out college in Washington, DC, but quickly realized that was a lot for me to jump into at the age of 18! I returned to NC and studied in Charlotte for a while before ultimately finishing my undergrad degree at UNC-Asheville. So, I guess what I'm saying is: I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life at the age of 18, and it's totally OK if anyone out there still hasn't quite figured out what they want to do yet no matter what age you are! 

After finishing my undergrad degree in Psychology and working in various roles for a few years, I began to notice an unfortunate trend in workplaces: that employees weren't always treated well, especially employees in services roles. I witnessed upper-level managers receiving respect, high salaries, and generally enjoying their work while "lower-level" staff were treated as if they were second-class citizens. That's when I realized that HR was what I wanted to do. I wanted to play a role in creating work spaces that could be enjoyed by everyone who worked there, regardless of their title or pay rate. That's when--about 5 years after my undergrad degree--I went to grad school at Western Carolina University for my Master's in Human Resources. 

So, where many people kind of stumble into HR work, I was very intentional about wanting to be in this field, and I've been doing HR in some capacity ever since! I'm currently the People & Culture Coordinator for The SPARC Foundation in Asheville, NC, where I have the pleasure of serving an amazing group of human services professionals doing great things for our community! As a wife and mom, it's important to me to work for a place that values family and work/life balance, and SPARC does just that. I believe SPARC is an employer of choice for working parents! Dr. Angel Williams received her Bachelors of Science Degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from South Carolina State University in 2004.  She went on to earn her Masters in Rehabilitation Sciences in 2007 and Doctorate of Physical Therapy in 2008 from the Medical University of South Carolina.

Since then, she has gained experience in working in various settings such as: Skilled Nursing Homes, Assisted Living, Home Health, Inpatient Rehabilitation, Occupational Medicine, and Outpatient Orthopedics. Angel is a Board Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist (OCS) and a member of the American Physical Therapy Association Orthopedic section. She has completed several other distinguished certifications including spinal manipulation therapy (Cert. SMT), vestibular rehabilitation specialist (Cert. VRS), dry needling (Cert. DN); and a Diploma in Osteopratic.

Angel’s passion is to better serve her patients by providing evidence-based physical therapy; recently completing a post-professional fellowship in orthopedic manual physical therapy. She now carries the notable credential as a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists (FAAOMPT).

After sustaining a traumatic brain injury in 2017, Dr. Williams mission is to demonstrate to her patients that they can achieve their goals.

When Angel isn’t treating patients, she enjoys traveling and spending time with family.

Cindy McMillan was born in Chicago, Ill and spent most of her teenage and adulthood in the Sunshine State of Florida. Cindy became a resident of Asheville NC in 2012. She’s an amazing mother of four who has experienced infant loss, trauma, PTSD, and SDOH shortly after the birth of her twin boys in 2002 and the death of her husband in 2018. She is currently a DONA Certified Birth Doula, Lamaze Trained Childbirth Educator, Certified breastfeeding Peer Counselor, Certified North Carolina Peer Support Specialist, Trained Death and Bereavement Doula; Black Maternal Health Advocate and Community Partner as well as the newly appointed Executive Director of Sistas Caring 4 Sistas Community Based Doulas for Social Justice in Asheville NC.

Cindy’s personal experience with loss, traumatic childbirth, and maternal health inequities has made her a strong ally, advocate, and leader among those who advocate and fight for Justice and equality within Black Maternal Health to increase better outcomes through equitable methods of care and support.

Tricia started her journey into hair in 1999, right after she got home from a year of travelling and playing the trombone with Up With People, which is a multi-cultural performing arts leadership program. While traveling, the cast members had very little money, and had no time to find someone to cut their hair, so Tricia offered her services and realized she had a knack for it. Thinking this could be a long-term option for her, she attended Haywood Community College. Tricia graduated and got her license in 2001 and started her career with the dreams of continuing to help people like she did when she was traveling.

Tricia married her love, Paul, in 2002 and they welcomed Adrian in 2004, Logan in 2009, and then Eric in 2015 thus completing their family! In 2005, Tricia branched out on her own and started working for herself and she absolutely loved it!

Always a lover of music, Tricia joined the Asheville Lyric Opera as a professional Chorus member in 2006. During the production of Madame Butterfly, Tricia jumped in to help with some of the wig duties because the make-up artists were swamped. The following season, she was offered a position as the Hair Designer and, of course, she said yes! In the fall of 2009, she was promoted to the Hair and Make-up Designer and was an integral part in the creative process for each production until 2015, when she decided to step away to focus on her business.

Speaking of business! Never one to sit still, Tricia decided she needed to learn more about the business side of things and took a class at Mountain Biz Works in June of 2010. It turned into an 8 week business plan course and about halfway through, she realized she was confident she could open a salon. Almost a year to the day, Asheville Hair Design was open!

Irene 'Jenny' Pickens is a self taught artist from Asheville, NC. Her love for art began at a young age when she would find random forms to draw. As she grew older, she experimented with different mediums, including pencil, pen and ink, pastels, oils, and acrylic. Her passion has always been in acrylic painting on canvas. Jenny was involved in the installation of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) mural in downtown Asheville, where she was the lead artist for the word Lives. Tor was born and raised in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville, NC.  Tor has overcome many obstacles in her life including being raised in low income housing and a single parent home. She knew at a young age that she could not allow her circumstances to determine her future. Tor’s experience with adversity led her on a path to discuss issues surrounding mental health awareness in the black community.

While Tor seemingly “has it all together” on the surface, she has battled mental illness privately. Being fearful of her family’s reaction and opinions, she has always kept her struggle with anxiety and depression hidden, until now. After experiencing, firsthand, what it was like to battle depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation alone she has made it her life’s mission to normalize the conversation surrounding mental health and empower others to use their voice to tell their story.

Jackie Latek is the Executive Director of the SPARC Foundation. She has twenty years of leadership experience in community mental health and non-profit organizations. Since 2013, Jackie has grown the SPARC Foundation from an operation of three staff focused on one service to an organization with an operating budget of $1.5 million partnering with criminal justice services, domestic violence prevention initiatives and the department of social services. SPARC’s mission is to ignite connections to education, employment and mentorship to strengthen the well-being and personal freedom of people and families in need. These services are provided to individuals and families in their home community to prevent institutional care such as incarceration, foster care, or other high end residential services. SPARC currently offers the following services:  intensive case management to individuals returning from incarceration to support with obtaining employment and overcoming numerous barriers to integrating back to the community; a focus on safety of domestic violence survivors by providing offender services aimed at education and behavior change; and Family Centered Treatment to children and families at risk of disruption or in need of reunification. Due to her experience and services developed, Jackie participates in county leadership commissions focused on violence reduction and community healing. 

As Chief Operating Officer for six years prior, Jackie was responsible for the management, service delivery, customer relations, financial projections, programmatic goals and program certifications for an agency that became known as the premier child mental health provider for nine counties in Western North Carolina, with an operating budget of nine million dollars. 

Early career highlights include volunteer work in Angola, Africa through Catholic Relief Services where she taught English as a second language as well as completed grant reports for hospital projects. Maintaining flexibility and a positive attitude in an oppressive and war-ravaged environment informs her work for American families living in over-burdened, under-resourced and often violent communities.

Jackie is a certified trainer in the Community Resiliency Model and has completed WNC Pathways Non-Profit Leadership program. As the adoptive parent of three children who spent their early lives in foster care, Jackie has a well-rounded perspective of the challenges children and families face in the foster care system.

Our story – Elochukwu Eze is a state-champion basketball player, top student, and all-around great guy. He is also a brain cancer survivor! On May 5, 2016, he was rushed to the hospital and we were informed that he needed emergency brain-surgery in order to save his life. This year is the 5th anniversary of that surgery. May is Brain Cancer Awareness Month. Join Eze as he helps to raise awareness for childhood brain cancer and works to support families, hospitals and researchers as they battle this disease. Helping families and curing childhood cancer is now a family passion as Geoff, Eze’s dad, is now the CFO at the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation.

Carlos Edwards Jr started Edwards Logistics in 2021. Edwards Logistics provides premier door-to-door waste and recycling service for multi-family properties including apartment communities, condominiums, student housing, and senior living communities. Carlos is a graduate of University of South Carolina at Upstate with a BA in Middle Level Education. Carlos is married to Veronica Edwards of the Veronica Edwards Show and they have a 5 year old son, Carlos “CJ” Edwards III. In his spare time, Carlos loves hiking and off road driving.

Lashaun is a Certified QuickBooks Advisor Elite member and has more than 12 years of experience in serving as a virtual administrator for CEOs across the country. In 2010, she founded Bookkeeping Virtually, specializing in providing online QuickBooks training, setup, support, and advisory services to a variety of small businesses. She brings expertise and hands-on experience to her role. Her comprehensive knowledge of accounting includes payroll services, general ledger postings, accounts payable and accounts receivable, and invoicing. She has developed and delivered monthly, quarterly, and annual profit-and-loss statements and balance sheets for management’s review. Lashaun also brings a keen ability to analyze cost control in order to provide timely financial information to support corporate goals and objectives. Over the course of her career she has identified and implemented changes to streamline processes and increase the efficiency and productivity of the accounting departments. Lashaun enjoys spending time with her husband and adult children, and visits to the beach with her extended family.
