This week, we meet Paul Glaser, who was born into a family of music and theatre with the classical composer Werner Wolf Glaser as his grandfather and director/actor Etienne Glaser as his uncle. He studied music and several instruments and wrote songs from early on. He started his professional career as a trained classical dancer after graduating from the Royal Swedish Ballet School. He was awarded the Carina Ari Award upon his graduation. He also studied with Robert Denver in New York. During these years he also studied voice and theatre. 

His international career spans well over 35 years and incorporates just about every aspect of the performing industry.

He has worked professionally as dancer, singer, actor, director, choreographer, composer, music producer, light- and sound-designer, writer and teacher.

Here as well, Paul gets offered a unique contract. Never before had the singing role of “Rum Rum Tugger” been offered in the same contract as the dancing role of “Mr Mistoffelees”, worldwide.

Prior to moving to Hamburg Paul is offered the job as Choreographer and dancer for the Swedish TV series SOLSTOLLARNA where he worked with stars such as SAMANTHA FOX, MANDY SMITH, LENA PHILIPSON, ANNA BOOK, PERNILLA WAHLGREN and many more.

Paul had continuously written music as well as now being a published author with the book ATT ODLA PAPAYA PA OSTERLEN (Prisma publishing) parallel to his career as a performer. Soon after he arrived in Germany, Paul was offered a recording contract with EAST WEST RECORDS and a publishing deal with MCA where he released his first single VOICES. Parallel to his engagements in musicals Paul grew into being a sought-after composer and songwriter and was hired by companies like NIKON, CASIO, VW, AIR HAMBURG, PLUS SIZE FASHION WEEK, PEACE BRUSH, JENA PHARM, ADEXAR, OPTICLICK, Pomp Duck and Circumstance to name a few, to write corporate songs and music for launches and other events. He was also commissioned to compose music for the show “YMA” at FRIEDRICHSTADTPALAST in Berlin, for the MENDELSSOHN CHOIR in Hamburg, for whom he wrote “HOME” as well as for films such as SHUT (in which he also acted a lead role) or PROFILE OF FEAR as well as for the German national TV station NDR and by THE ENGLISH THEATRE OF HAMBURG for plays such as SHAKESPEARES 12th NIGHT, THE FOX, SIX DANCE LESSONS IN SIX WEEKS (which he also choreographed), VISITING MR. GREEN, THE SUBJECT WAS ROSES, BIG BOYS, and many more. He has currently composed music and created sound design for over 40 plays in theatres, including for his own productions such as THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GREY (Oscar Wilde), THE WOMAN IN BLACK (Stephen Mallatratt), DEATH KNELL (James Cawood), MOONLIGHT AND MAGNOLIAS (Ron Hutchinson).

In 1999 Paul wrote book and music as well as directed his own musical PEGGY, which he premiered in the Star Theatre in Hamburg and for which he received outstanding reviews and audience responses.

As Paul went more and more into directing he was not only hired by theatres but also, due to his experience and vast network (which led the management of OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN to contact Paul about finding a pianist to accompany her in a gala in Berlin) he was also hired by companies to create innovative and impressive shows for companies like VISIT SWEDEN, CLAAS, NRW as well as gala versions of LES MISERABLES for Verdi Bundeseröffnungsveranstaltung, ALL FOR ONE an adaptation of THE THREE MUSKETEERS, HAIR and many more.

Following his director’s debut in LONDON’S WEST END, with his production of Stephen Dolginoff’s musical THRILL ME at the Jermyn Street Theatre in 2016, he was offered the position as managing director of THE ENGLISH THEATRE OF HAMBURG. “This still allows me to work on projects outside of the theatre” – says Paul. Working on several projects at the same time is something he’s done throughout his whole career. 

“This is a great advantage as a director, writer, and composer. Having all of this experience gives me such a unique advantage when directing. I know how to incorporate music, dance, acting and singing, whatever the production I’m working on is calling for, as well as effectively utilizing light and sound design. For the theatre I direct mostly straight plays and the occasional musical, but for my clients outside the theatre it can be anything, and that’s very exciting”  says Paul, who is also a teacher, currently at the Musical Academy in Milano/Italy where he travels when he can to give MASTER CLASSES in musical theatre. 

He now works as a freelance COMPOSER, DIRECTOR, WRITER and CREATIVE MIND for projects outside his duties as managing director of The English Theatre of Hamburg.

Episode 17 - In this weeks episode, we meet Ines was raised in Chicago with immigrant parents.  Her mother is Russian, her father is Latvian, her first language growing up was Latvian.  A classically trained dancer, lead to modelling and then to theater while at Northwestern University.  She has always been in front of the camera or on stage, most comfortable there creating characters and telling stories.

Ines speaks Mandarin fluently and can read as well.  She spent two years in Taipei learning the language and then two years at Hong Kong University obtaining a certificate in Mandarin proficiency, reading, writing, and speaking.  She has worked with many mainland China actors including Li Yifeng, Wang Chuanjun, Li Tingting, George Hu, and Aarif Lee (Li Zhiting)


She has been very fortunate to have worked with some talented actors and directors in the industry including Joe Pytka, Xu Jing Lei, Miguel Ferrer, Tiger Chen, Keanu Reeves, and Sidse Babett Knudsen.  Mostly recently she has worked with director Lulu Wang and actors Awkwafina, Tzi Ma, and Diana Lin in "The Farewell" and for a second time with Emily Ting in her film "Go Back to China".

Her new journey is undoubtedly influenced by modern era pop music with influences from Scandinavian and UK pop artists.

Two exciting singles Walls so High and Don’t lie to me released in December and January are included in her Debut EP - New Life which came out in January 2021.

Fraser is an award-winning actor/writer/director as well as CEO and founder of The TriForce Creative Network /dandi.org.uk; an organisation set up in 2003, with a core ethos of ‘inclusivity’ that promotes equal opportunities in the entertainment industry.
‘I am mixed race (Barbadian/Scottish), born and raised in Leicester, from a single parent, working class family, which very much informs all of my work on and off-screen. Inclusion and access aren’t merely political aims- they should be the cornerstones of not only our creative industry, but core to our societal responsibility - if you include everybody, you don’t need to exclude anyone.’
As an Executive Producer and Script Editor, Fraser has worked with the likes of Cormac McCarthy and Noel Clarke, as well as well as being responsible for creating the only comedy panel show about Black history - ‘Sorry, I Didn’t Know’.
Through his D&I organisations, Fraser has supported thousands of individuals from all walks of life to find their place in our industry, impacting greatly on on-screen representation over the past decade. Now, turning his attention to off-screen talent, Dandi.org.uk is working bespoke with the likes of Amazon, HBO, BBC, UKTV and over 50 production companies to ensure inclusive recruitment at all levels.
Creatively, Fraser received the 2021 Imison award and is responsible for creating and Producing the only comedy panel show about Black history - ‘Sorry, I Didn’t Know’. His writing includes the award winning In the Long Run, Eastenders, the upcoming CBBC Series Lagging, and radio productions such as Maynard for BBC Radio 4 (Imison Award finalist) and Space is the Place, a 5 part dramatization of the lives of the Jazz greats for Jazz FM. Fraser is currently writing on several projects including an original commissioned series for UKTV (Midsomer Murders meets Atlanta) based on his experiences of race and classism in a wealthy, idyllic village.
Beginning his creative career as an actor, Fraser’s highlights include being named The Guardian’s “Top Performer”, Time Out Best Performer, several The Stage Best Actor nominations and starring in The Smoking Room, Midsomer Murders, and NBC’s international miniseries, Kingdom and Empire. Movies include Patrice Chereau’s Intimacy, Alex Cox’s Revengers Tragedy & Noel Clarke’s AdultHood.
In his spare moments, Fraser does a lot of Yoga and plays with a lot of Lego.

Episode 12 -  We meet Ruth Francis - TV Host, interviewer and Voiceover artist!! 

Biog: I have been working in television for many years now, my first presenting job was in 2001 interviewing bands and pop artists at Party in the Park. Since then, I have loved my varied and exciting work, presenting everything from beauty to cars, red carpet interviews to corporate videos. I have gained thousands of hours of live TV, pre-recorded, voiceover, training and events experience.

I have been a regular on shopping TV network QVC since 2006 and I currently present a range of beauty brands here in the UK and also in Italy. In more recent years, this work has taken me to QVC US and Germany too which has been a lot of fun (and airmiles!). I no longer travel to the States but I just love being based in my home country and in Europe.

I have learned to adapt my presenting style over the years to the projects I’m working on and I’m just as comfortable in a suit doing a corporate video as I am in a glamourous dress live on air or on the red carpet!
You can see more details about who I’ve worked with and for here on my website and in my blog I will share some backstage and behind the scenes photos and stories as well as some ramblings about life.
In 2009 I trained as a life coach specialising in wellbeing and empowerment and I absolutely loved it. This prompted me to work with clients wanting to improve on confidence, presenting, personal branding for their businesses and public speaking. I have trained hundreds of candidates in big auditoriums for beauty brands and also groups in retail stores and individuals on a one-to-one basis and I like to think that I help people to find their passion and inner performer but ultimately to feel good about themselves.
Originally, I am from a small town in North Yorkshire and although I moved to London aged 20, I still feel my northern roots are strong. I love to visit my family regularly and to get out into the beautiful countryside as often as I can. My other passions are yoga and taking trips with my lovely hubby – and of course, catching up with girlfriends over a cuppa (or glass of wine) you can’t beat it!

In 2016, Michael was selected as the Absolutely Fabulous Theatre Connections; Emerging Director—an experience that included traveling to the UK in the summer of 2016 to further his director training at LAMDA, before returning to Hong Kong to direct Jane Eyre for the company.

Since then, Michael has directed productions including Theseus and the Minotaur, The Secret Garden, and Pygmalion.

Michael is also a founder of Golden Voice Entertainment, alongside his business partner Sandra Waters. He has written two original musicals: Auditions (performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival) and Arabian Dreams (premiered in Hong Kong in September 2018). He also wrote the play Lions Typhoons and Judy, Oh My! about Judy Garland, which premiered in Hong Kong in June 2018.

As an actor, Michael has performed roles such as Malvolio (Twelfth Night), Passepartout (Around the World in 80 Days), and Javert (Les Misérables). He also had the privilege of performing with the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong in their annual performance of The Snowman and the Bear in 2018. Other roles include Oberon (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Hamlet, and Jacob Marley (A Christmas Carol). In 2019, he performed at the Compassion Awards, broadcast on Phoenix TV.

Gordon Griffin comes from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, though he was actually born at Gilsland in Northumberland, where his family temporarily located in wartime. He trained at Rose Bruford College.

Career:
As a stage actor, he has half a century's experience of working in theatres up and down the British Isles, and in English-speaking productions overseas. He took part in the first national tour of Godspell, and played in Julius Caesar and in Murder in the Cathedral at Chichester Festival Theatre. Other UK regional theatres where he has performed include Derby Playhouse and the Octagon Theatre, Bolton.

For twenty years he was the Casting Director for The English Theatre of Hamburg and has cast over fifty plays, including The Importance of Being Earnest, Twelfth Night, As You Like It, Arms and the Man, Candida, Blithe Spirit, The Caretaker, Private Lives and The Circle, as well as the plays of LaBute and David Mamet.

As a cabaret singer he has performed with his singing partner Francoise Geller in the UK and elsewhere. He has composed music and lyrics for productions such as The Circle, Educating Rita, When the Reaper Calls, Over the River, Through the Woods and April in Paris.[4]

His first film job, in Arabesque, required him to play a scene with Gregory Peck and Sophia Loren.

On television he has been a presenter on Play School, he played Inky in two series of Chips' Comic for Channel 4 and he spoke the first line in the first episode of Byker Grove.

Griffin has worked as a dialogue coach on Byker Grove and Kavanagh QC.

Through doing radio drama he realised that he could display great versatility with his voice alone, accessing a greater range of parts than would otherwise be possible. (For instance, in the late 'sixties when well into his twenties he took over the part of Billy the eldest grandson in The Dales, formerly Mrs Dale's Diary, who had previously been played as a boy with an unbroken voice, and played him till the serial ended.)

He 'got in on the ground floor' when audiobooks started to be recorded. For many years he has been a voiceover specialist and has recorded nearly eight hundred audiobooks, mostly unabridged.[9] The subjects have been as varied as Homer's Odyssey, Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four and novels by H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, as well as more modern writers like Hilary Mantel and Melvyn Bragg. Also many titles in the Golden Age of Murder series for the British Library, and non-fiction titles such as Elegy: The First Day on the Somme, and Breakfast is a Dangerous Meal by Terence Kealey, among many others. AudioFile Magazine wrote: "Griffin is not just a narrator, but an artist of the Spoken Word. He is in the top five of the most borrowed audiobook narrators in the world."[10] In 2015-2016 his 2015 reading of Kate Ellis 's The Death Season was the sixth most borrowed adult audiobook from UK public libraries, as reported by the Public Lending Right office.

His more unusual audio recordings include having been the courteous voice advising alighting passengers to "Mind the gap, please" on the London Underground.

In 2017, Griffin was appointed MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List "For services to People with Sight Impairment".

Gordon Griffin comes from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, though he was actually born at Gilsland in Northumberland, where his family temporarily located in wartime. He trained at Rose Bruford College.

Career:
As a stage actor, he has half a century's experience of working in theatres up and down the British Isles, and in English-speaking productions overseas. He took part in the first national tour of Godspell, and played in Julius Caesar and in Murder in the Cathedral at Chichester Festival Theatre. Other UK regional theatres where he has performed include Derby Playhouse and the Octagon Theatre, Bolton.

For twenty years he was the Casting Director for The English Theatre of Hamburg and has cast over fifty plays, including The Importance of Being Earnest, Twelfth Night, As You Like It, Arms and the Man, Candida, Blithe Spirit, The Caretaker, Private Lives and The Circle, as well as the plays of LaBute and David Mamet.

As a cabaret singer he has performed with his singing partner Francoise Geller in the UK and elsewhere. He has composed music and lyrics for productions such as The Circle, Educating Rita, When the Reaper Calls, Over the River, Through the Woods and April in Paris.[4]

His first film job, in Arabesque, required him to play a scene with Gregory Peck and Sophia Loren.

On television he has been a presenter on Play School, he played Inky in two series of Chips' Comic for Channel 4 and he spoke the first line in the first episode of Byker Grove.

Griffin has worked as a dialogue coach on Byker Grove and Kavanagh QC.

Through doing radio drama he realised that he could display great versatility with his voice alone, accessing a greater range of parts than would otherwise be possible. (For instance, in the late 'sixties when well into his twenties he took over the part of Billy the eldest grandson in The Dales, formerly Mrs Dale's Diary, who had previously been played as a boy with an unbroken voice, and played him till the serial ended.)

He 'got in on the ground floor' when audiobooks started to be recorded. For many years he has been a voiceover specialist and has recorded nearly eight hundred audiobooks, mostly unabridged.[9] The subjects have been as varied as Homer's Odyssey, Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four and novels by H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, as well as more modern writers like Hilary Mantel and Melvyn Bragg. Also many titles in the Golden Age of Murder series for the British Library, and non-fiction titles such as Elegy: The First Day on the Somme, and Breakfast is a Dangerous Meal by Terence Kealey, among many others. AudioFile Magazine wrote: "Griffin is not just a narrator, but an artist of the Spoken Word. He is in the top five of the most borrowed audiobook narrators in the world."[10] In 2015-2016 his 2015 reading of Kate Ellis 's The Death Season was the sixth most borrowed adult audiobook from UK public libraries, as reported by the Public Lending Right office.

His more unusual audio recordings include having been the courteous voice advising alighting passengers to "Mind the gap, please" on the London Underground.

In 2017, Griffin was appointed MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List "For services to People with Sight Impairment".

In 2020, Griffin published his memoir Speaking Volumes.

This week, we sit down with EJ Harper, scientist turned novelist.

She grew up in the North East of England and left to go to university in Nottingham. Home is now a twelfth century mill in South West France.

Today, we’ll talk about her literary influences, her writing career, the highlights of creating her debut novel Lazarus Remembered, and an interesting fact from her life.

Who or what are your literary influences?

EJ Harper:
For me, the most important aspect of a novel is the emotional journey. I want to shed tears of joy and tears of grief, and I’m in awe of any author that can craft a story with a powerful emotional punch.

Maggie O’Farrell’s After You’d Gone is the perfect example of this—it tore me apart, as did the achingly beautiful Hamnet.

Another emotion is, of course, surprise, and there’s nothing more delicious than a twist that leaves you reeling. Daphne du Maurier does this beautifully with Rebecca, and so does Sarah Waters with Fingersmith.

I’ve also a soft spot for Irish writers and their wry observations on life. John Boyne’s The Heart’s Invisible Furies is just about the perfect novel, and I unreservedly recommend it to everyone.

Tell us about your writing career

EJ Harper:
I’ve always loved writing and, following a twenty-five year career in scientific research and communications, I finally realised my life-long ambition to write a novel.

Early in the process, I decided to make it an audiobook complete with a soundtrack. Thus the idea for Lazarus Remembered, my debut novel, was conceived.

I’m currently working on my second novel—a psychological drama set in France. I also write short stories and have twice been shortlisted in international competitions.

What were the highlights of writing Lazarus Remembered?

EJ Harper:
There were so many! From a writing perspective, I remember wrestling with various plot strands, and one day, while out walking, suddenly they fell into place. It was an extraordinary eureka moment.

Working with Andy was a revelation. Seeing him take a musical phrase and turn it into a song was—and is—amazing. I still have no idea how he does it.

I loved the time in the studio recording the narration, but a particular highlight is Francesca singing Sosban Fach. Late one afternoon, we made a spontaneous decision to have her sing it. Overnight, Andy worked out the melody, Francesca rehearsed it, and the next morning a piece of magic was created.

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself

EJ Harper:
When I was studying for my PhD, novelist Catherine Cookson and Greggs the Bakers sponsored me to travel to Japan to present my research findings.

Written by Felicity herself — with production by Jhay Cabrera and Andro Martinez, and mastering by Darren Ziesing — the sweet, vibrant, and punchy track comes with an equally glossy and stylish music video, set for release on December 4.
The video resembles a glittery dream sequence, created by the formidable creative team helmed by Sydney- based Can't Be Stopped Productions. The visuals highlight Felicity's natural charm and powerful presence, which positions her as a total performer and in a league of her own. Her light not only shines in the way she sings and dances, but in her writing as well. 'Need You To Stay' was written back in 2017 while she was enduring a lovesick heart on board a cruise ship, away from the love of her life. But happy endings prove to be true, as Felicity is still with the same person she wrote the song for in 2017.
"I wrote the song in my cabin while sailing around Alaska after my new boyfriend had left the ship and returned to his home on the other side of the world. I am so excited that we got our happy ending after six months apart and out of a tricky situation, I now have my first single out in the world," said Felicity.

There is certainly no backing down with this girl on fire, as she is set to release more singles in the coming months. From the little girl who sings the whole Spice Girls album with her mum, to being influenced by the music of Britney Spears, Kylie Minogue, and Delta, to name a few, Felicity has definitely come a long way, and is now set to make her own light sparkle and shine!

Born in Cyprus to an Army father, and after a short stint in Germany and the United Kingdom, he then moved to New Zealand where he grew up. At the age of eighteen he took off to explore the world and has since lived in England, Hong Kong (twice) and India (twice) as well as travelling extensively

Mark has worked variously as a barman, a factory hand, supermarket shelf stocker, and a real estate salesman, but since giving up his Real Estate career in Hong Kong, Mark has devoted his time to writing and traveling.

Due to Covid travel restrictions, Mark is based in India again, where coincidentally two generations ago, his grandfather, while stationed there as a soldier under British rule, met and married his grandmother, a nurse of mixed Indian and Dutch descent.

Mark is a keen runner and in between runs is slowly building an impressive collection of Gin.

This week we sit down with Louise Hurley: Louise is a passionate teacher and director, combining over a decade of teaching drama, making theatre, and creating magic with her soul family of students in South East London. The Covid19 lock-down caused a full stop, and the forced silence opened the door to an intense awakening experience. She has since written Necessarium, a channelled play, which has given another level of meaning to her life purpose, and to the creative and expressive gifts that she has used throughout her life. As a newly qualified Reiki practitioner, Louise has also been given the opportunity to discover just how strong her intuitive gifts are, and how they all fit in to her Dharma of identifying and enabling in others, the emergence of the part of the soul that innately needs to exist, giving it space to shine, explore life’s narratives, and to creatively express what it inherently needs to.
