Alma Soongi Beck is a Korean American lawyer and surfer seeking to inspire others to take action to end the climate crisis and reverse global warming. A long-time organizer in queer/trans and people of color circles, Alma’s climate work began with Sustaining All Life and United to End Racism (also known as SAL/UER) leading workshops and forums on unlearning racism, listening to frontline communities, and overcoming discouragement about the climate crisis.

Leading up to the 2018 Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco, Alma and others co-founded a climate justice arm of APIENC (pronounced A-pink), Asian and Pacific Islander Equality of Northern California, an organization for queer and trans Asians and Pacific Islanders in the SF Bay Area. This climate arm, now called the Ecological Justice League, most recently hosted an international climate storytelling haiku and poetry workshop in September 2020 for queer & trans Asians and Pacific Islanders.

Also, in December 2019, Alma posted a daily Twitter feed about climate (@alma_on_climate) and since October 2020 has been posting on Facebook 100 Days of Dancing to BTS to End the Climate Crisis in an attempt to inspire fans of BTS and other Korean pop groups to use their massive global influence to join the efforts to reverse the climate crisis (#btsonclimate).

She also co-founded a monthly people of color and indigenous people's climate solutions discussion group in 2018, and since March 2020 has been serving as the Climate Justice Co-Chair of the Climate Reality Project Bay Area Chapter, a Chapter of VP Al Gore’s organization that trains climate leaders around the world to give presentations and educate the public about the climate crisis.

I awoke to an orange sky on September 9, 2020, and it was like I awoke to a reality of an existence I didn't previously acknowledge. Environmental movements and positive activism to reduce the negative effects of global warming began over 30 years ago.
