Michelle Nicole Matlock is a performing artist, creative coach, teacher, director, producer and founder of Circle Up Productions (CUP), a live entertainment and performing arts education company based in Tacoma, WA.

Michelle has been a part of the entertainment industry for over 25 years and had the honor of being the first African American Person to create a main character for Cirque du Soleil. They toured with Cirque's big top show OVO__for close to 10 years.

Currently Michelle is an Adjunct faculty member at Dell’Arte International School for Physical Theater and a member of the Puget Sound Revels creative team. Recently Michelle was Clown Director/Consultant for Circus Bella and Emmy nominated actress' Carolyn Ratteray’s solo show Both And…A Play About Laughing While Black.

Michelle has continuous teaching engagements and collaborations with organizations across the nation including, Clown Gym, Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, The Clown School, Laughter League, Circus Amok and Tacoma Light Trail

Michelle grew up in Tacoma, WA., studied theater for 3 years at Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA. and is a Graduate of the National Shakespeare Conservatory in New York City.

Singer-songwriter J.R. Rhodes believes in the transformative power of music.

Rhodes muses, “It’s easy to be cynical. It takes a lot to be intentional. It takes a lot to dream. It takes a lot to love.”  Her recent release, I Am, takes the listener into love and then heartache, through rebirth, and finally, up into freedom.

J.R. is currently working on two new albums. One recording is a cinematic folk album including music inspired by the works of African-American artists Alice Walker, Nikki Giovanni, Elizabeth Cotten, Langston Hughes and more. The other recording is a collection of songs of African-American heritage including spirituals, slave songs and lullabies.

Born in Montreal, Dessy Di Lauro discovered her love for music at a young age. Venturing to Los Angeles, she met producer and now life partner Rick'ey Pageot, forming the groundbreaking duo Parlor Social, which garnered acclaim with their unique fusion of ragtime, swing, and hip-hop-infused R&B. Now, Di Lauro is embarking on a solo career, blending Brazilian, Cuban, Italian, and African influences. Her forthcoming album promises a dynamic exploration of diverse musical roots, marking a compelling new chapter for this musical trailblazer.

A conversation with Imole Ladipo on growing up in Nigeria, her experience immigrating to Canada, and moving to the US later in life with her three young children. She is an engineer AND filmmaker. You will hear about her most recent releases, three short films that are bound to have something to connect with on a deep level.

From a young age, Imole Ladpio has been involved in one form of the arts or another. She has a bubbly personality and a contagious smile that lights up a room. It is no coincidence that the name Imole is interpreted as “Light” in her native Language.

Imole moved from Nigeria to Canada to continue her studies and had quite the culture shock changing from a tropical climate to the cold weather of Alberta Canada. She also had to overcome a lot of the cultural differences between both continents. This experience played a crucial role in developing her character and perseverance.

Imole went to University for Engineering but remained an active member of her Church and was involved in the Choir and Youth department throughout. She graduated University with Honours and then married the love of her life in 2014.

Imole had always been interested in modernizing the way her church operated so when her husband bought her a camera for christmas she jumped at the opportunity to develop short videos for announcements. Little did she know that the announcements were just the beginning of her finding her lifelong passion. She fell in love with the process of video production and created Lumiere Films. Her vision was to use videos as a means for spreading positivity based on the fundamentals of Christian values. Since the purchase of the camera Imole has created multiple short movies that have been viewed by hundreds of thousands of people online.

Imole currently works as an Engineer and uses her technical background to plan and organize her movie development. She loves ice cream but has been trying to abstain from it in the quest to lose weight. She isn’t always successful in avoiding it but is hopeful that next year she will do better. She enjoys going to live shows with her husband, eating seafood and travelling. She recently had a set of twins and they have kept her quite busy, but she still somehow finds the time to make movies and smuggle the occasional ice cream from creamistry.

Kimberly is an inspirational speaker, professor, author, motivator, entrepreneur, and a beauty queen who sells tea. Walker has coupled her love for tea and self-care. Her passion is to inspire and motivate women to embrace their whole self; to see, to accept, to love and soar into their personal awesomeness.

A proud alumni of both The Juilliard School and Manhattan School of Music, N’Kenge made her Broadway debut in Sondheim on Sondheim and most recently was on Broadway in the revival of Caroline, or Change. 

This energetic, well-rounded singer has performed with jazz greats like Ornette Coleman and Wynton Marsalis and was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of the leading roles in both the Elton John/Tim Rice Musical  Aida and in Marion Caffey’s 3 Mo’ Divas by the Helen Hayes Awards and the Arizoni Theater Awards.

In addition to her performances, N’Kenge is also a producer and is currently developing a Broadway-bound musical celebrating Dorothy Dandridge’s life and music. She is also developing a new TV musical dramedy, Black Butterfly, with TV producer Gina Goff.

]]> In this episode Marian Harrison describes what it was like growing up in rural Arlington, Washington, the change in the community as the economy shifted throughout the decades, the work she did for local government, and family. 

Born in Everett, Washington 1931, Marian Harrison is a Mother of 7, grandmother of 11.

Marian was an employee of the Arlington School District for 22 years, a member of Public School Employees of Washington, current Chair of the 38th Legislative District Democrats, formerly the Chair of the 10th District Democrats, and has worked around 30 campaigns. 

Serves on many boards and commissions in Snohomish County, which include the foster Care Citizen's Review Board, and the Children's Commission.

Val is a community organizer/activist with deep experience in media. She has also worked extensively with the multi-award-winning production company North by Northwest, serving as co-host on Washington Grown, and managing video production elements for educational, nonprofit and government video campaigns. We discuss her most recent endeavor in this episode, which is Look Listen and Learn.

Born in Trinidad,  she lived in the Caribbean and in the UK as a child.  She has lived in Canada since she was eight years old.  Reverend Kelly Addison, of KGL TV near Toronto, Canada, calls her “a national treasure.”   Those who are lucky enough to spend time in the presence of the wise and wonderful Sistah Lois, would heartily agree.

Known for decades in Toronto for her strong voice, both when she rises it in song and when she speaks out as an activist and artist. 

“I explore spiritual, musical, creative, rebellious journey and lifestyle experiences from these diverse cultural challenges coupled with non-traditional labour logistical backgrounds,” she says, explaining the scope of her work.  “I wish to expound about the experience of a black feminist telling how I survived varied assaults all along with the how and why our cause goes still ignored in the age of the #metoo (who2) movement.”

Allison had the pleasure of speaking and reconnecting with immense talent, Shea Rose - singer, songwriter, music curator, and style icon. They discuss Shea's career origins, the experience of listening to your own instincts, and her experience growing up in Boston, MA.

Shea Rose has possessed numerous titles throughout her career: singer, songwriter, style icon, and music curator are just a few. Her music, influenced by soul, hip-hop, and rock, speaks to personal and societal transformation. She has received numerous honors for her musical talents, including multiple Boston Music Awards, a SESAC National Performance Activity Award, and she is a recipient of the prestigious Abe Olman Scholarship from the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Rose is an Assistant Professor at her alma mater, Berklee College of Music, teaching in the Contemporary Writing and Production Department. She holds a B.A. in English and a B.A. in Communication from Pine Manor College. Rose is a student of yoga and meditation; she writes one poem a day and offers coaching and holistic practices to help women come into a healthy and embodied voice.
