Since the book’s release, Mr. Phillip has appeared on NBC-12 (Richmond), The Michael Colyar Show, Real Black News with Raqiyah Mays, Soul Logistics Radio and several other social media outlets.

A lifelong educator and financial literacy advocate, Mr. Phillip has taught Economics and Personal Finance in Henrico County Public Schools, facilitated financial literacy workshops at Richmond Public Library, Henrico County Public Library and Chesterfield County Public Library. In 2016, his organization, The Ndugu Business & Leadership Academy, partnered with the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Department of African American Studies on their SWAGIFY Financial Literacy Research Project. Also in 2016, he received the Manny Award from My Brother’s Keeper of Greater Richmond for contributions to the community in Central Virginia.

Mr. Phillip is the Co-Founder of the Youth Business Exchange, a 501c3 nonprofit organization that promotes and motivates youth entrepreneurs. This organization hosts the annual Richmond Children’s Business Fair, which is a public marketplace that allows youth entrepreneurs, between the ages of 5 - 17, to promote their products and services.

Emily Fleming (MAT, RYT500, RCYT) is a certified educator with over a decade of classroom teaching experience, a certified yoga instructor, and the founder of Yoga In Classrooms And Schools Consulting (YCSC).

After three years of teaching special education on the West and South Side of Chicago, Emily spent 8 years teaching yoga and mindfulness as a daily enrichment class at a middle school in Baltimore, MD. During her time teaching in Baltimore, she developed a 3-year curriculum focused on using yoga and mindfulness as a means of exploring SEL competencies and incorporated Project Based Learning and Arts Integration into her curriculum. Emily founded YCSC in early 2022 and left the classroom in June of 2023. Through YCSC, she now empowers schools, districts, and other youth serving organizations to prioritize the well-being of students, staff, and families through yogic practices.

Candy Pambu Martin is a Christian, wife, mother, and edupreneur, in that order. An immigrant from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Candy pursued education as a tool for achievement and success. She has a B. A in Political Science from NC State University and a M.S. in Education concentration in Mathematics from Johns Hopkins University. An alum of Teacher for America, Candy has spent 12 years in education as a teacher, MTLD, and various other roles.

After grad school, she started a college prep business that helped students plan for college early and avoid college debt. Candy worked with 100+ students to secure more than $500,000 in scholarships. Among her clients were students who are Gates scholars and debt-free college graduates. As she ran her business, she simultaneously worked as a cofounder of a startup that built an app to scale college prep for students at an affordable rate (less than the price of a Netflix subscription). What started out as the Undecided App is now called Mapt.

In 2022, Candy shifted gears and started working with a different demographic. She is the owner of Biblical Wives, a company that prepares Christian, single women for the husbands God has for them through coaching, Bible Study, courses, and YouTube. Ultimately, Candy's mission is to share the gospel and its impact on love, dating, and marriage. In a world where marriage is on the decline and Christian dating doesn't seem to differ from secular dating, Candy focuses on the gospel as the core of marriage and practical applications in preparation for marriage.

Guest Bio

Rodrick C. Johnson is a literacy coach, doctoral student, founder, and CEO of The Johnson Experience LLC. He specializes in helping teachers find the hidden talents that make them the “CEO of their own classroom experience.” After developing their newfound superpowers, he introduces the teachers to data-informed instruction. This is said to be done to transform them from ordinary to legendary teachers! After spending six years creating unique learning experiences for children, he found a passion for professional development, teacher support, and school leadership.

In 2020, he became a Great Minds Fellow, which allowed him to start his journey into professional development. The fellowship allowed him to share his unique teacher-supporting style with over 500 teachers and school leaders in the United States. He has supported new curriculum adoptions and coached teachers in 10 states. He is now pursuing a doctorate from Morgan State University, hoping to one-day change policy to help teacher preparation.

Rodrick holds a degree from Coppin State University and a master’s in education from Grand Canyon University.

Kenrick Wagner is a social entrepreneur and hip-hop artist with over 15 years of professional musical experience as a music educator, performer, recording artist, author, and producer. Mr. Wagner's life's work has been dedicated to providing top-quality youth programming and building a generation of leaders that will use creativity to learn and thrive. Kenrick believes that one of the biggest challenges we face today in youth development is building an inclusive culture for young people to express themselves through music.

To address these issues Kenrick has created "It's a Rap for Good: Creating Positive Classroom Culture" a workshop that introduces educators to techniques and tools that break the barriers of hip-hop culture in the classroom. This workshop has been well received by both regional and national organizations.

As a Hip Hop Artist and producer, Kenrick has released 3 albums, BQE Volume 1 and BQE Volume 2 and The Maturation of Mister Wagner. Kenrick is currently working on a fourth project "Maturation 2" scheduled to be released in 2023. Kenrick has secured Keynotes with the American Camping Association, NJSACC, Affinity Health New York, and various companies nationwide. In addition, Mr. Wagner has also been featured in Forbes Magazine, Fox 5 News, and Beyonce's Bey Good Foundation for work in partnership with Statebags Incorporated www.statebags.com.

Ben Trentelman

Ben has been serving youth and communities in various capacities since 2002, and entered the afterschool field in 2006 where he has run afterschool programs all along the Wasatch Front for three different organizations and operated eight afterschool programs, impacting thousands of youth along the Wasatch Front. Ben joined UAN as the Director of Operations where he led efforts to expand and develop a comprehensive statewide continuous quality improvement system and has worked to develop numerous tools and resources. Ben has provided training and workshops on quality improvement, data collection, leadership, parent engagement, and more both throughout the state and nationally. Ben is also a national consultant on data collection and continuous quality improvement. Ben has been serving as the Executive Director at the Utah Afterschool Network since 2021 where he supports the continued growth and expansion of afterschool programming throughout the state.

Lauren Levorsen

Lauren is the School Alignment and Data Specialist at the Utah Afterschool Network. She has a B.S. in Marriage & Family Studies from BYU-Idaho and an M.Ed. in Educational Psychology from the University of Georgia. She happened upon afterschool programming by accident during her college years and fell in love with it on her first day as a summer program youth facilitator. Lauren has participated in multiple roles as an afterschool professional over the last 10 years: youth librarian, direct service staff member, and program coordinator, all before stepping into her role at UAN. In her spare time, Lauren can be found reading with her 5-year-old, taking a walk/hike, reading something from Brene Brown, or rewatching old Netflix favorites. She also loves spending time outdoors with her family and requires (at least) one Diet Coke break per day.

Lisa Wisham, M.Ed.

Lisa is a Senior Research & Evaluation Associate and School & District Improvement Specialist at the Utah Education Policy Center (UEPC). As a member of the Bridgeworks School Improvement Team, she co-designs and co-facilitates professional learning opportunities for school leaders, supports school leadership teams through individual and team coaching opportunities, and guides school leadership teams through the school improvement planning process. Lisa also works with the UEPC evaluation team as they use student and program data to help afterschool program staff make thoughtful decisions and intentional adjustments based on their data. Prior to joining the UEPC, Lisa was an Education Specialist at the Utah State Board of Education for nine years, where she managed the 21st Century Community Learning Centers federal grant, as well as the Intergenerational Poverty Interventions and Partnerships

Alexis Steines

As Vice President of Field Outreach, Alexis Steines Rao serves as the liaison between the Afterschool Alliance and its growing network of afterschool providers. She keeps the field up-to-date on the ever-changing afterschool policy landscape and mobilizes them to affect the development of afterschool-related public policy. Alexis also manages the Afterschool Alliance’s national AmeriCorps VISTA project, focused on creating sustainable afterschool programs, increasing participation in the afterschool and summer meal programs, and expanding access to STEM education afterschool. Alexis joined the Afterschool Alliance in June 2011 after spending five years with the School Nutrition Association, primarily as the Public Affairs Associate. In that position, she monitored federal and state legislation, including the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, served as liaison to several allied organizations, and assisted in managing media relations for the association. Alexis holds a B.A. in History and Political Science from The George Washington University.

Improving student outcomes is Airick Journey Crabill’s relentless focus. He currently serves as the Conservator at DeSoto, Texas, Independent School District. During his guidance, DeSoto made double-digit literacy gains and improved from having F ratings in areas of academics, finance, and governance to the district earning B ratings. He’s also Faculty at the Leadership Institution of Nevada; a Collaborator with the Effective School Boards Initiative; and a National Director of Governance at the Council of the Great City Schools in Washington, DC. He served as Deputy Commissioner at the Texas Education Agency, and he spearheaded reforms as board chair of Kansas City (MO) Public Schools that doubled the percentage of students who are literate and numerate and eventually led KCPS to full accreditation for the first time in decades. Crabill received the Education Commission of the State's James Bryant Conant Award, which recognizes extraordinary individual contributions to education.

In this episode, we are shedding light on the wonderful impact mentoring programs have on our youth and our communities. In recognition of National Mentoring Month, I thought it would be great to have two young people share their experience with mentoring and how it has added to their lives.

Our two guests today are high school students from the Richmond area that participate in R.E.A.L Girlz (a character development and leadership program for young girls). Zahbella and La'Nae will share with us how real girls have nurtured their personal growth and how they will use their skills and life experiences to impact the next generation.

La’Nae is a sophomore at Douglas Freeman High School. She participates in various groups like; the Black Student Union, Girl Scouts, and R.E.A.L Girlz! She works on the farm part-time at CHAT. La'Nae enjoys spending time with family and friends. She also loves to dance and make Tik Toks as well as meet new people.

Zahbella is currently attending Midlothian High. During her free time, she loves to draw and paint. She also loves to write stories for school or just for fun. She truly enjoys being a part of the R.E.A.L Girlz Leadership program and looks forward to being a mentor.

Tammie has an undeniable passion for empowering women and youth. Over the past 13 years, she has empowered women through coaching, public speaking, and domestic violence peer counseling. She has facilitated hundreds of workshops on forming healthy relationships, conflict resolution, effective communication, teen dating violence, and sexual responsibility. Her workshops have been facilitated in women’s groups, public schools, and juvenile correctional facilities.

In 2008, Tammie founded Mentor, Encourage, Lift and Love, Inc., a community-based organization providing life skills, educational workshops, and mentoring to teen parents. Between, 2008 and 2009 the organization hosted a diaper drive delivering over 4,000 diapers and baby wipes to a women’s transitional home.

Tammie has been interviewed on several local radio stations and newspapers, including Urban Views and Richmond Times Dispatch. In November 2008, she was interviewed as a Comcast Newsmaker for her work with teen parents.

In our last conversation with the founder of The Academy of Goal Achievers, Courtnie McIntosh, she mentioned expanding her program and helping more youth with career and college prep. With much success, The Academy of Goal Achievers has developed new cohorts and we are talking with the gentlemen that were part of that expansion process.

We discussed the importance of having aligned goals and values, dividing responsibilities based on the strongest skill set, establishing culture and expectations with the new cohort, and much more.

Keyshawn Phelps is a System Architect Engineer for a defense company in Melbourne, Florida. He graduated from Virginia State University earning a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering in 2019 and is actively pursuing a Master’s in Systems Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology.

He is highly respected amongst his peers as a role model, trailblazer, and community leader at work and in his local and childhood community. Keyshawn desired to be a positive role model for his family by being a difference-maker. To achieve his desired outcome, he realized that completing his education was essential as his mom taught him to focus on the bigger picture, and not to let their economic circumstances dictate his future.

Post-graduation, his self-determination and his passion for inspiring others in his community led him to create the organization “Just Want to Inspire Inc, a non-profit. Through this non-profit, Keyshawn influences underprivileged and disadvantaged youth within his community to pursue higher learning especially STEM.

Tony Stanford Jr., originally from Buffalo, NY has been a Charlotte, NC resident for 10 years where he is a now full-time entrepreneur which allows him to focus on his passion for helping people through real estate, youth development, and travel. In 2007, he graduated from Alabama A&M University with a degree in Electrical Engineering Technology.

Upon graduation, Tony joined Eaton Corporation in the operations leadership development program. While there he managed projects of increasing responsibility supporting a $3.1 billion organization composed of 28 plants worldwide in continuous improvement activities. He left Eaton for Communications Test Design Inc (CTDI) where he served as the Quality & Safety Manager.

In 2019, he completed a Master of Business Administration degree with a concentration in Entrepreneurship at North Carolina State University. A lifelong community servant Tony is always seeking out ways to give back and is involved with a host of organizations including Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., National Society of Black Engineers, First Book, and The Academy of Goal Achievers.
