Zack Be is an award-winning author, obscure songwriter, and Couple and Family Therapist/Certified Sex Therapist caught in the Washington, DC gravity well. His clinical work focuses on the more complex corners of relationships—working with couples in crisis, non-traditional dynamics like ethical non-monogamy and BDSM, long-term infidelity, and male sexual health concerns. He also teaches and supervises graduate student therapists at the University of Maryland. His science fiction has appeared in Asimov’s Science Fiction, Analog SF and Fact, and Writers of the Future v.36, and he won the 2024 Jim Baen Memorial Science Fiction Award. Off the clock, he’s spent 15 years playing, producing, touring, and otherwise toiling away in the DC music scene.

No Pterodactyls formed in DC in 2017 from the ashes of a wedding cover band that decided to start writing their own songs. After playing shows around the DMV for a few years, they self-produced and released their first album The Most Important Thing in 2020. Their second album Next Thing I Know releases Friday May 22, and showcases their knack for catchy, eclectic indie-rock.

For the past decade or more Bob Falconer has devoted himself full-time to IFS work. In that time he has attended all levels of IFS training offered, and has been at many workshops and events with Richard Schwartz both as assistant and participant. In addition to studying with many of the other senior IFS trainers, He also co-authored a book with Richard Schwartz entitled, Many Minds, One Self. His other books include The Others Within Us, When You're Going Through Hell ...Keep Going, and just recently released in December 2025, Spirit. His focus is now on the study of spiritual presence experiences.

As a psychologist, Gloria’s career has covered the lifespan, starting with working with preschoolers, mainly boys, because female teachers are more distressed by boys than girls. Throughout almost 50 years of private practice, she has worked with preschoolers, elementary-aged children, teens, adults, and couples. Her training in Emotion Focused Therapy and Internal Family Systems has been effective in helping each client heal from childhood injuries and learn to embrace their strengths.

Her recent book, Read, Reflect, Respond: the 3 R’s of Growth and Change is designed to help adults examine their histories and grow into the present. Stimulating essays are paired with guided questions and an opportunity to draw, scribble, and write genuine reactions to the printed words. In this way, each person is guided to uncover parts of themselves and their histories, leading to the opportunity to change and grow.

Her book in process How Not To f$%! Up Being A Father, is a guide for fathers on raising boys that maintain access to the full range of emotions and experience a sense of competence about being able to express feelings. For centuries, we have raised boys to suppress access to the more tender range of feelings. Then we expect them to exhibit compassion, form deep commitments, get married, develop an intimate, supportive emotional relationship with another, and eventually provide emotional guidance to their sons and daughters. This is a setup for failure. One cannot lead down a path that they have never been allowed to walk.

Matt Dowling is the Chief Scientific Officer and Director at Medcura Team. Matt completed his graduate work at the Fischell Department of Bioengineering at the University of Maryland (UMD), after completing his undergrad in Chemical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame. At UMD, he was awarded the Fischell Fellowship in Biomedical Engineering for his innovative ideas in drug delivery systems. Matt then co-created gel-e, a novel biomaterial platform, raising several initial grants to develop the technology and to launch Medcura as a corporate entity. Matt was the recipient of the Dean’s Doctoral Research Award from the UMD Clark School of Engineering for his work on chitosan-based self-assembled soft materials for use in wound treatment. He has been the Principal Investigator on $10 million in non-dilutive grant awards to Medcura; these have been used to achieve 5 FDA clearances, 2 Breakthrough Device Designations, 28 issued patents, and 10+ peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals. Matt’s work has been featured on several US and international media outlets including the BBC TV program, Brave New World with Stephen Hawking. He's also the lead vocalist in the band, Swoll.

Pablo Leon is an author and artist from Guatemala, currently living in LA, California, and jumping between TV animation and comics. He's an Eisner Award Nominee for his original comic “The Journey,” an account of an unaccompanied child coming from Central America to the U.S., and he was the illustrator for the exciting middle grade graphic novel series “Miles Morales” at Scholastic. He’s worked with Disney, Warner Bros, and Nickelodeon. His passion for capturing historical memory in his art and stories has led him to his writer/artist debut “Silenced Voices” at Harper Alley, and his first animated short film “Remember Us”, which won Best Short Film at the 40th Imagen Awards and was an Oscar-qualifying winner for Best Short Animated Film at Animayo. When he’s not working, he enjoys cooking alongside his helper cats, Agave, Moth and Midna.

Robert Falconer is best known for his extensive involvement with Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy as a practitioner, teacher, and writer. For the past decade or more Bob Falconer has devoted himself full-time to IFS work. In that time he has attended all levels of IFS training offered, and has been at many workshops and events with Richard Schwartz both as assistant and participant. In addition to studying with many of the other senior IFS trainers, He also co-authored a book with Richard Schwartz entitled, Many Minds, One Self. His other books include The Others Within Us and When You're Going Through Hell ...Keep Going. His focus is now on the study of spiritual presence experiences.

Jerry Marzinsky BA M.Ed. is a retired licensed psychotherapist with over 40 years of experience working with and studying the thought processes of psychotic and criminally insane patients in some of the most volatile psychiatric institutions in the nation. Jerry is a commercial pilot, certified SCUBA diver and long distance motorcyclist. He has held the positions of 2nd Lt. in the Arizona Civil Air Patrol and Assistant Scout Master. He was awarded the state of Arizona’s meritorious service award and the Pima College Apple award of teaching Abnormal Psychology. His formal academic training comprises a B.A. in Psychology from Temple University, a Master’s Degree in Counseling from the University of Georgia, and two years of study in a Ph.D. Psychology program. He is the co-author of An Amazing Journey Into The Psychotic Mind - Breaking The Spell Of the Ivory Tower and currently has a private practice in Arizona.

David, a licensed psychologist, began training in Internal Family Systems (IFS) nearly 20 years ago. Dr. Rose has authored works including The Message of Love behind the Ten Commandments and Swedenborg's Garden of Theology and been the host of the Spirit and Life Bible Study.

Beyond his scholarly pursuits, Dr. Rose is also an accomplished musician who explored spiritual themes in his eclectic gospel album "Clear Shining after Rain." Rose has a passion for exploring the therapeutic potential of Swedenborg's teachings, inspired by innovative psychologists like Wilson Van Dusen, Raymond Moody, and Jerry Marzinsky. In his work, he aims to help people know and understand Swedenborg’s works so that they can connect with heavenly inspiration and healing.

While she works in human resources professionally, her passion lies in sex education, so she's gaining her certification to put her training & public speaking skills to work in an underserved field. Rich Del Grande is a full time teacher and part time performer and professional goofball. He got his start in performing competing in the Red Bull Flugtag followed by almost a decade at the Olney Boys and Girls Club's Field of Screams. He previously appeared on and did social media for the “Now Available on Video Cassette” podcast and was a frequent guest on MET Comedy Nights “The Last Hurrah” improvised talk show. He currently co-hosts the annual Baltimore Krampuslauf in Hampden/Peabody Heights. He has also appeared in music videos for Frederick area bands “Seaknuckle”, “Double Motorcycle”, and “Sunniva”.

Erika Bond is a licensed marriage and family therapist practicing in DC and MD. She’s been in practice nearly 20 years and her most recent undertaking is getting her AASECT sex therapy certification. AASECT is the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists. Prior to being a psychotherapist, she worked for many years in the Information Technology field. She worked as tester, business analyst, and content producer.

Dr. Ralph Piedmont received his Ph.D. in Personality Psychology from Boston University. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institute on Aging, where he was trained in taxonomic models of personality and their relevance for understanding mental and physical outcomes. Dr. Piedmont was a full professor in the Department of Pastoral Counseling at Loyola University Maryland and is now the Managing Director of the Center for Professional Studies. His current research interests focus on the measurement of Spiritual Transcendence, a construct that represents a broad, nondenominational, motivational measure of spirituality. He has demonstrated the predictive value of this construct in both normal and clinical contexts, using both American and cross-cultural samples. Dr. Piedmont is extensively published in the scientific literature and is on the editorial boards for Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, Assessment, and Journal of Personality Assessment. He was the founding editor of the new APA journal, Psychology of Religion and Spirituality. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association and a member of the American Counseling Association (ACA). He is also very much involved in Division 36, the Society for the Psychology of Religion and Spirituality for the APA and ACA’s Association for Spiritual, Ethical, and Religious Values in Counseling.

#147 Robert Falconer

For the past decade or more Bob Falconer has devoted himself full-time to IFS work (Internal Family Systems Therapy). In that time he has attended all levels of IFS training offered, and has been a program assistant more than 18 times.

Bob has been at many workshops and events with Richard Schwartz both as assistant and participant. In addition to studying with many of the other senior IFS trainers, He also co-authored a book with Richard Schwartz entitled, Many Minds, One Self. For all of his therapeutic work, both professional and personal, Bob now uses IFS almost exclusively.

Before this Bob used and explored many forms of therapy, starting with Ericksonian hypnotherapy which he studied with Carol Erickson. He received his master’s degree and hypnotherapist certificate under her tutelage. Then he met and began studying with Jack and Helen Watkins, the creators of Ego State Therapy.

Before beginning his graduate work, starting in 1971, Bob was involved with the Esalen Institute where he has attended more than 120 events and workshops. Jonathan is on the faculty of the Center for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis of New Jersey, and he is a former instructor at the Institute of Contemporary Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis in DC, as well as former adjunct faculty at the graduate schools of social work at VCU, NYU, Columbia, Adelphi and Fordham. His doctoral dissertation was the first study of gay affirmative psychotherapy, and his latest article, “Evolution of a Gay Male/Non-Binary Psychoanalyst,” has been accepted for publication by Psychoanalytic Inquiry journal.

He is also owner and operator of the Magpie Cage recording studio, and has engineered and produced records since the mid-90s for bands as diverse as Clutch, Against Me!, Jets to Brazil, and literally hundreds of others. On February 2nd of this year he released his second solo record, Basilisk, on Dischord Records.

Ty Cutner is a Level 2 trained IFS-informed image and relationship coach for men. He improved the way he dressed on a daily basis in 2012 and within months was appointed Chief Operations Officer of a black youth organization in Bedfor Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, NY. He started helping friends with their image and they experienced similar career and social advancements instantly. In 2016, he launched his image coaching practice helping professional men gain the social and psychological benefits of a well-dressed man. Since 2020, he’s been helping men move on from divorce, separation or relationships that included infidelity. In addition to coaching men via his image and relationship training, he also provides workshops for young men and boys in New York City schools. He lives in Brooklyn, NY with his son Aiden. Ty is a contributing author in the newly released book Freeing Self: IFS Beyond the therapy room. The chapter is entitled: Coaching Black Men and Boys to a Self Led Life Ty Cutner Style.

Her specialty is in the field of Reproductive Psychology, where she actively writes, lectures, and presents. She is a consultant in training in EMDR through EMDRIA. She has served on several committees within the Mental Health Professional Group of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and was just elected to its Executive Committee. She served as a former Board Member of the Maryland Psychological Association for over 10 years. Dr. Bindeman is a member of multiple organizations focused on Maternal and Reproductive Mental Health and was appointed by the Governor of Maryland to serve on the Maternal Mental Health Task Force. Gerhard Grieb was born into a refugee family from Eastern Europe, emigrating into Germany in 1946, the year he was born, and into the US in 1956. After completing public education in the Philadelphia suburbs, he attended college for 2 years when he was drafted into the Army. He served 1 year in Vietnam and then returned to finish his BA. He went on to get a Master's at U of Md. and dropped out of the PhD program in 1977 to begin working for the Postal Service. He served as VP and editor of the Letter Carrier's local until then switched to become an Electronic Technician. He was married in 1970, divorced in 1980 from his first wife, then remarried in 1982 to the present. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2009 and retired at that time. He lived in Takoma Park from 1973 until 1987 and has lived in Sandy Spring since.

He has been touring the world as a member of various bands for over 14 years. He is the full-time drummer of Nekrogoblikon, Swashbuckle and Wizardthrone, and also holds down a full-time position as composer and audio director at Sabotage Studio, an independent game studio from Québec City, Canada. Their first project The Messenger released in 2018, and their current project Sea Of Stars raised over $1.6 million CAD in the midst of a pandemic, making history as one of the most successful Canadian video game Kickstarter campaigns of all time.

Eric: "After a couple years of working on #seaofstars as the sole member of the audio department, I realized I needed a lifeline to help with the increasingly daunting task of creating audio for a game no less than 4 times bigger than what I did by myself in 2018 with The Messenger. I gave Jake (@olbigleg) a call asking if he’d be interested in helping out, and within a month he’d learned the tools on his own and was ready to jump into the fire. Starting at only one day a week, he moved up to two and then three as production ramped up. Together we’ve created over 19,000 audio assets and collaborated on several tunes currently in game. Over the past 2 months our bands completed our second tour together and at the last show I wanted to get a selfie together while they were on stage playing for 800 people in Los Angeles. Here is that selfie (See @ericborwnovfire). Sea of Stars releases on August 29 on every platform. Play it with the sound on. Follow your dreams."

Nate is a husband, father and therapist based out of Bethesda, MD. As a former athlete, Nate saw how many athletes and young men were suffering with mental health problems without an outlet. Nate graduated with his Bachelors in Social Work from Catholic University and then went on to receive his Masters in Social Work from Columbia University. For the last 20 years he has run his own award-winning digital marketing and publishing company. He is also a theater professional, directing, music directing, and performing in stage productions. He recently music directed a new production of West Side Story and before that was in Riverside Center’s acclaimed production of Bright Star. He was also the Resident Director for the new version of Broadway’s Amazing Grace and currently oversees its worldwide licensing. Because of his family’s unique cancer journey, Chris Zavadowski is a voice for caregivers working tirelessly behind-the-scenes for their loved ones. He is a strong advocate for clinical trials and research. Currently, Chris serves as an Ambassador for the Lymphoma Research Foundation and is a top fundraiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Jessica is a self-described multi-potentialite and at the age of 39, still isn’t sure what she wants to do when she grows up. After graduating from the University of Colorado, Boulder’s business school (business school is the worst!), Jessica went to Mongolia as a Fulbright scholar and worked with Mongolia’s nomadic reindeer herders. (She is not that cool anymore.) She then returned to the US, moved to DC, applied to law school, had a mental breakdown, and did what many in their late 20s/early 30s do when they have a quarter life crises, she fled to graduate school. Jessica received an MS in conservation and international development from the University of Montana in Missoula. She moved to Denver in the hopes of getting a sweet job in international conservation; But she didn’t. Instead Jessica owns Green Lady Gardens, a houseplant and pottery boutique in Denver. It's good for now but it's not forever.

Bianca Stevens is a Practice Manager, Private Practice Consultant and the Founder of Nurture and Balance along with their partner Nicholas Trietsch. Nurture and Balance is a mental health private practice and medical billing facility located in Martinsburg, West Virginia. As a business owner, Bianca is passionate about mental health; and has worked and volunteered in it since they were 18 with organizations like NAMI. Bianca started her private practice after the loss of her brother who served in the Army and died by suicide in 2015. Bianca enjoys working and helping practices streamline processes, onboard with electronic health records, hire and credential, do the medical billing, and link their practices and ethics together. They have completed schooling for both medical billing and coding, and certified clinical medical assistant; along with phlebotomy and ekg. Before Bianca worked in mental health; they did an internship in endocrinology and came to understand the importance of how physical health impacts mental health. Her hopes for working in mental health is to destigmatize it and increase access to individuals of all walks of life and experiences.

Her YouTube show Kindly Kelley offers viewers short helpful mom hacks, Day in the Life (DITL) scheduling videos, cleaning inspiration, meal planning inspiration, Oral Immunotherapy (OIT) for peanut allergy, and sometimes funny videos. She is also the host of the Restoring Regular Order podcast where she speaks with friends, family, business owners, and more focusing on a grassroots approach to solving the divide in our country. Her podcast joins the movement to get conservatives and liberals talking to each other again, working together again, and voting occasionally across the aisles again. Kelley has worked as a political consultant with the likes of Creigh Deeds, Peyton Williams, Mark Sickles, Jonathan Stevens, and Joe Sestak. She is also my lovely wife and the mother to our two girls.

George Whitehead is emeritus professor of Psychology at Salisbury University. His career at SU spanned 44 years. During those years he taught many excellent students, served as Department Chair and on committees at SU and in the community. He helped start the AmeriCorps program at SU. Working on this program reinforced his belief in the power of service learning. He revised several courses to include service learning and co-authored two books on service learning. He has also co-authored articles on topics that include climate change, social psychology textbooks, and self-presentation. He earned his Ph. D. in Social Psychology from University of Massachusetts-Amherst. During his career he has received a number of awards. These include the Alumni Association’s Faculty Appreciation Award, the USM Regents Faculty Award for Excellence in Public Service, and The Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore’s Chairman’s Award. He and his wife have two children and three grandchildren.

Jimmy Stewart is an award winning composer and performer in the Baltimore music scene. With a bachelor's in science and business administration he worked as a contractor for the government office of the Washington Navy Yard for 4 years and is now the program director for the float cyber security office for the U.S. Government. From his early days in Tampa Bay, FL he enlisted in the U.S. Navy at age 17 and spent 21 years as a submariner. Though the Navy showed him the world, Jimmy has happily settled in Baltimore, MD where he now quietly crafts his music. He feels most at home in nature next to a warm campfire. Kevin Kennedy is a professional photographer based out of Silver Spring, MD. Kevin opened his studio in 1999. His formal studies include Maryland University College Park and Santa Fe Photographic Workshops as well as apprenticeships under several photographers. He uses a unique approach to portraits by evoking emotion through subjects telling their story in their expressions. Kevin became acutely aware of facial expressions when half his face became paralyzed. It was diagnosed as Bell’s palsy, during his senior year in college. Minoring in Psychology at UMCP, he applied a few of the theoretical treatments to aid recovery. While he has recovered 95% of facial muscle control, the experience has made him acutely aware of subtle facial expressions in others. He has applied that study to his portrait photography work. Kevin now works as a full time professional portrait photographer. Much of his work lately has been headshots. He loves working with people to make extra ordinary portraits.

Nate is a husband, father and therapist based out of Bethesda, MD. Growing up, He was an accomplished athlete, going on to play football at the collegiate level. He saw how many young men and athletes were suffering with mental health problems without an outlet. Nate graduated with his Bachelors in Social Work from Catholic University and then went on to receive his Masters in Social Work from Columbia University. Nate’s experience has been shaped by practicing in a number of settings including community clinics and Intensive Outpatient and Partial Hospitalization Programs. Nate’s experience led him to opening his own practice, The Calming Mind, where he is dedicated towards the improvement of Men’s Mental Health. The Calming Mind also works closely with local sports teams to help address the mental health needs of local athletes.

Tom Gilbert is a husband, dad and music person living in Nashville, TN. Born in Kronberg, Germany to British parents, Tom grew up in the Washington, D.C. suburb of Olney, MD where he uncovered a deep fascination with music and guitar. This led to the formation of many bands, a move to Tennessee, years of touring in a 15-passenger van, and a career in music marketing. After a two-year stint in Oakland, CA, Tom now resides in the Inglewood neighborhood of Nashville with his wife and daughter, and works as the Marketing Communications Director for music gear brand Positive Grid.

My next guest is the legendary Pablo Leon. Pablo is an author and artist from Guatemala, currently living in Los Angeles, California, jumping between working in the TV animation industry and comics world. His original comic “The Journey”, about the true accounts of people migrating from Central America to the U.S., was a 2019 Eisner Award nominee. He has worked with Warner Brothers Animation, OddBot Inc, DreamWorks Animation, Bento Box Entertainment, and most recently landed a gig at Disney Television Animation where he’s working on a new show called Hamster & Gretel.

Today on the show I sit down with Nicholas Trietsch. Nick graduated from Shepherd University with a Bachelors Degree in Sociology and a minor in Environmental Studies. They went on to obtain Masters of Social Work from West Virginia University.

Their experience is local to the eastern panhandle and includes community mental health with substance use and persistent mental health differences, foster care and adoption with children, adolescents, birth families, and blended families; domestic violence and child trauma; and at a local mental health private practice working with children, adults, and families from all walks of life and challenges.

Nick has also taught the social work Sex and Gender class for Shepherd University in 2015.

Today I sit down with the owner of Mixtape Studios, Jarrett Nicolay. Jarrett is a hometown hero of the DMV music scene, most notably for playing bass in the Alexandria based rock band, Virginia Coalition. He also records under the moniker My New Mixtape, and has self produced and released three full length albums to date. Jarrett's songwriting has been featured in indie films including 2016 Sundance favorite “I Don’t Feel At Home In This World Anymore”. It was so satisfying to get his take on working as an audio engineer, teaching students, the songwriting process, forecasts about what the live music scene could feel like in a post-covid world, and much more.

Today on the show I sit down with Joe Ramienski. Joe has been teaching children since nineteen dickety seven. We had to say "dickety" cause the Kaiser had stolen our word "twenty".

Joe has been teaching Physical Education for eight years, and has been a teacher for a total of fourteen years (5th, 2nd, and 3rd grade - teaching ALL the subjects!) I had him on the show to talk about the experience of online schooling as well as the transition back, returning to in-person instruction, or rather, returning to a hybrid model.

We go into that territory and much, much more (since we both have ADHD).

AASECT is the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists.

Jerome Glenn and his team at the Millennium Project, a global futures think tank in Washington D.C. were asked by the American Red Cross to create COVID-19 Scenarios. The three richly detailed Covid Scenarios of the United States to January 2022 are:

Scenario 1: America Endures (baseline, mix of good and bad developments)
Scenario 2: Depression, Hubris, and Discord (plausible worse case)
Scenario 3: Things go Right! (plausible best case)

Listen as my father-in-law schools me on how the U.S. could look two years from now. These scenarios factor in U.S. health/medical variables, U.S. socio-economic variables, global socio-economic variables, global health/medical variables, and the State of the Pandemic Index - an assessment of variables that indicate the course of the pandemic for an integrated index.
