Awakening the Collective

We are at a kind of crossroads in our human history. With that being said, I want to talk about the energy behind what I am witnessing on today's show.

I see self love as the critical factor in these days. See, if you don’t have such practices you cannot see through what is being dismantled in our society. Beyond all the racial slurs, the financial monopolies, the political opinions, the virus and it’s vaccine there is another world that first asks - is this love?

There are a few things happening now that cause us to take sides, but what we are continuing to not see no matter what the arguable subject may be is that there is a human condition. This human condition doesn’t care about materialism, politics, or race.

The “battle” we are facing is simply to participate in the animosity or hostility of what is happening in our world or to find peace. I am lead to believe the real division is to play along in the chaos or separate and dream a new world into being. We are being given a great opportunity for growth.

What Makes A Best Seller?

I wanted to talk about a best seller, but I want to remind you that I don’t believe in best sellers as a key reason for writing your book. But, what I do look at is the business principles behind the concepts. These concepts should be looked at by every self-published author in order to grow a stronger platform.

There are a few rules for every bestseller list and how to get your book on them. And please note that I’ve done a few podcasts where we talk about the idea that most self-published authors will never become a best-seller. So, keep in mind that it’s highly unlikely this will occur for you.

There are two main principles that make up most best-seller lists. They are determined by the number of sales and the reporting of those sales.

It might be said that podcasting is easier than figuring out the book writing process and it’s far more personable and immediate to share your message, but like writing a book, if you don’t have a plan for it it will not produce results.

Well… we’ve figured out we are inside a bit longer than a few days. How much journaling have you been doing? How much deep thinking or meditating have you been doing? What have you accomplished in all things self-growth or new business initiatives? If you are any kind of entrepreneur you know this time is a tremendous gift…an opportunity to get ahead!

What is it that you have learned, what have you conquered, what have you contemplated in your time behind the closed doors of this quarantine? How have you grown? What has been realized? Have you been witness to your strengths? How about your weaknesses? What do you feel compelled to share?

Have you learned new ways that you now feel compelled to teach? Can you organize your thoughts in the structure of a book? Where have you seen the need for change and how can you improve it? Are you a medical professional on the front lines that now has new ideas for a future crisis? A food service with new ways to enhance delivery? A delivery service with new ways to protect workers? A business owner with ideas to enhance ways of working from home? Have you watched the earth heal as it’s humans have stayed home and now can propose new ideas for helping our environment. What have you observed that now can be wrapped into a book and shared with the world?

There is No Greater Time Than Now To Write A Book

We are all going through a major shift in our human consciousness. We are raw and scared and exhausted and questioning life as we once knew it. We are busy thinking about yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Our minds are full and we suddenly have found some extra time on our hands.

Maybe you are using this time to re-align with a better future, taking classes, or updating your resume. Perhaps now you are planning, calculating, and thinking about your next move on the other side of that open door. Maybe you are thinking more about aligning with your passion and your purpose?

I know that as an author of several books I find my peace in writing. How about you? If you now suddenly have a lot of free time on your hands…have you ever considered writing a book? Maybe time has been your primary excuse? Maybe now you have gained more clarity on your life purpose or it’s time to re-work your path or tell your story. Are you healing wounds in this time? Are you opening up old ones? What has this time brought into focus for you?

Gifts of the Corona Virus?

Strange perhaps to think something so devastating could prove to be positive, right?

If you are forced to stay home, unable to go out, and get pulled out of a daily routine you’re going to have to look at some things you might not have looked at in awhile…those little spider webs in your closets so to speak.

You might have to find something new eat, care for your kids, spend time with a partner, workout at home or walk outside, stop hiding from your neighbor, clean your house, or otherwise reinvent yourself in some way in order to cope with what’s happening in the world and it’s effects on your life.

The gift of quiet reflection. So much can be gained personally, professionally, and spiritually when we have down time to re-focus!

Have you put off learning something new? Growing your business? Taking a class? Learning about a new diet or even fasting? Have you always wanted to build something or learn to knit? Or what about writing a book?

As authors we sometimes find that thing we are so passionate about and we sit down to write and we are met with resistance. I got talking with a client the other day. As I talked to her she was telling me about all the psychic mediums that told her she was supposed to be writing a book and she would be a bestseller. She told me that she knew she was supposed to be on stage speaking.

I put so much pressure on myself to achieve the lofty goal of writing a book—with the idea that it was my fate and aligned with the stars for some great purpose—so much pressure that almost didn’t write!

Little Back End Victories Help Prepare For Your Book Launch

Today I want to talk about little back end victories. You know, those little victories we have in our business that we don’t always put out there for show but those little things that keep everything running behind the scenes….

The other evening I finished up a class I’ve been taking to learn about email list building and SEO. It took me a very long time to complete the class because I was also writing out my value proposition and defining the audience I’m speaking to, generating ideas for lead magnets (that thing my target audience is drawn to and clicks to learn more about me), and making lists of key words (further identifying who I am and what I do). I also set up google analytics and played with a few other website monitoring tools. Have you done any of these things for your business?

Branding, Design, and Book Platform

I was just having a conversation with a client this morning about some design ideas for her new book. I have been designing book covers for the last decade now and I have identified a few topics for discussion for today’s show as it relates.

My client is a therapist and she was telling me about the kind of therapy she does for her patients. She was telling me it is not uncommon to be called at strange hours of the night to pull someone off a bridge or to remove a gun from their hand and in the process of clearing their trauma… and some traumas of her own… she realized that she wanted a book that would showcase peace.

Today we had a discussion about that and some of the attractive features geared toward someone who might buy her book. I told her that there are a few ways that we could approach this…

Starting off the New Year with a Book Manuscript

Happy New Year! Today is the first blank page in your 365 page book. Are you off to writing a good one? Literally! Are you?

So, you want to write a book and you have no idea where to start. I want to talk about how to get started. I know you’ve been thinking about it for awhile and you want to step into this decade as an author.

If you’ve been listening to my shows you know that I’m a huge proponent of a few things as it relates to your book:

Aligning with your values, goals, and objectives outside the book (your platform)
Using your book as a tool to leverage the material in other communication or training, and
Using the book to set you apart and position you as an expert on your subject

In my podcast yesterday I talked about the idea of setting up 15 chapter headings…consider these sub-sets of the title or major groups of similar topics. I want you to get out a piece of paper and write the title of your book at the top and number 1 through 15...Let's start getting your manuscript together!

These are all exactly the same issues I had, but I have now written multiple books. So what allowed me to get over the hurdles and become one of the 2%? I think it might be the same response many new authors have…I wanted it more than I didn’t!

Defining Title, Subtitle, and Tagline

Perhaps you have an idea for a book but you’re at a loss for a title. Perhaps you have a strong title but no clue if your material is strong enough to support it. Either way, you likely have some ideas around a title. Sometimes choosing the subtitle and tagline get lost until you’re far into the book or done with the entire manuscript. You may need your editors help to flush these elements out, but let’s take a stab at it here and see what we can come up with.

Choosing the title is kind of like choosing the subject matter. You have to really sit back at some point and ask the question: “What is my book really about?” and “What am I trying to do with my book anyway?”

How Do You Register Your Book?

What Motivates Us to Write?

Before you can get to a functional manuscript you have to have a bit more than just the yearning to tell your story and a few ideas.

You also have to have a bit more than a few vendettas to get even by outing someone and a bunch of wounds you want to bleed out over the pages. Yeah, trust me that grief and anger inspires more authors than you realize.

You’ve probably heard me talk about writing with purpose. What is even more important than what motivates us to write (the why) is what we are preparing ourselves for upon it’s completion. This is where one might begin to further define their platform.

Because Every Author Faces Some Form of Interruption
