Helping us understand all of this is Dr Kamel Mohanna, a physician and a humanitarian who’s been a beacon in the field. Dr Mohanna is the General Coordinator of the Arab NGOs, and the Founding President of Amel Association International. Amel is one of the largest humanitarian organizations in the Middle East, nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize and serving countless needy individuals in Lebanon and abroad.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has been recognized as a leading public health problem worldwide. The global estimated prevalence of CKD is 13.4%, and in the US more than 1 in 7, that is 15% of US adults, are estimated to have CKD. Moreover, as many as 9 in 10 adults with CKD do not know they have the disease.

When people develop chronic kidney disease, their kidneys become damaged and over time may not clean the blood as well as healthy kidneys. If kidneys do not work well, toxic waste and extra fluid accumulate in the body and may lead to high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and early death.

According to Wikipedia, the Qudoūd Ḥalabīya, literally means “musical measures of Aleppo” and are based on old religious melodies collected mainly by Aleppine musicians. Their themes are most often love, longing and spirituality. The lyrics vary according to the type of event, be it for religious or entertainment purposes. Singers use deep vocals to reach a peak while holding a long note or repeating a phrase, sending their audiences into what is referred to as tarab, or exultation. Qudoud is a vital part of Aleppan culture and is viewed as a source of resilience, particularly during war.
The UNEESCO inscribed Qudoud in 2021 on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Arab American youth are a complex and diverse population, often misunderstood, misclassified and misrepresented. These youth face a challenging socio-political climate, psychological and emotional stressors, some of which can affect their ability to embrace their Arab identity. Philanthropy is a gift of time, talent, or treasure. While most philanthropy takes place every day by ordinary people, what often gets the attention are mega-donations by “elite” to elite causes. Mr. Jaber is an organizer and a thought leader who has been involved with many national and community boards, including his crucial work with the U.S. Census National Community Advisory Board on Race and Ethnicity

Mr. Hassan Jaber led ACCESS’ growth into the largest and most impactful Arab American community nonprofit in the nation. Under his leadership ACCESS established three national institutions – the Arab American National Museum, the Center for Arab American Philanthropy, and the National Network for Arab American Communities – and some 120 human service programs in 10 locations. Mr. Jaber is an activist, an organizer and a thought leader who has been involved with many national and community boards, including his crucial work with the U.S. Census National Community Advisory Board on Race and Ethnicity

Women get paid less than men, everywhere! Let’s talk about it. In Arabic

Across the globe, women’s participation in the workplace has grown significantly. Women have been working longer hours and pursuing higher education in greater numbers. However, despite this progress, significant wage gaps between men and women persist.

The gender wage gap refers to the difference in earnings between women and men. Experts have calculated this gap in a multitude of ways, but the varying calculations point to a consensus: Women consistently earn less than men. In this podcast, we will describe this disparity in wages, try to go over some of the theories and reasons why this gap exists, and talk about its consequences. And with the scarcity of information available, we will attempt to cover what is known about the status of working Arab American and Arab women in general.

In today’s conversation at the Café, we talked about the scope of the problem and some proposed solutions. Our guest was Dr. Kristine Ajrouch, a noted expert on the topic, who studied and published extensively about aging in Arab Americans, covering the impact of physical and mental illness, social safety net and acculturation. Dr. Ajrouch is Professor of Sociology at Eastern Michigan University. She is Adjunct Research Professor at the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan. In addition, she is Director of the Michigan Center for Contextual Factors in Alzheimer’s Disease.

Domestic Violence, often referred to as Intimate Partner Violence, is a serious preventable public health problem. This can be missed or misidentified especially in ethnic communities, where “the norms” can be misconstrued. In this episode, Mona Makki, a Psychologist and a researcher in this field, talk to Café patrons about this issue. Mona is the Director of the ACCESS Community Health and Research Center in Dearborn, Michigan. She has committed herself to fight domestic violence, working closely with victims and their families, and collaborating with faith leaders and the authorities in this fight.
