EPISODE 141: The Blackbyrds were at the cutting edge of jazz fusion, R&B and funk in the 1970s, pushing the boundaries of Black popular music forward in one of the most musically fertile decades of the past century. Established by legendary jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd in 1973, the band's success includes several highly touted albums, film scores (1975's "Cornbread," "Earl and Me"), as well as supporting such iconic artists as B.B. King. Herbie Hancock, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Roberta Flack and more. The Blackbyrds’ self-titled debut album put the group on the map with "Do It, Fluid," a funky laid-back party anthem. EPISODE 135: A pioneer of the brash, no-holds-barred style that came to dominate morning shows on rock radio in the 1990s, Joey Reynolds began working as a deejay at small stations in 1960. In 1963 he returned to his hometown of Buffalo, New York, where he worked at WKBW, the powerhouse station whose signal reached two-thirds of North America. Mixing traditional Top 40 histrionics with rants and raves about anyone who had upset him—be it his boss or his listeners—he became a sensation and moved on to stations in Cleveland and Detroit. After jumping around to Hartford, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and New York City, he landed in Miami in the late 1980s, working on both radio and television and later hosting a nationally syndicated, all-night radio talk show. He has published a book on Islam, The Muhammad Code, an autobiography, How I Accidentally Started The Sixties, and three books on human evolution and group behavior: The Genius of the Beast, Global Brain, and The Lucifer Principle. EPISODE 81: Sonja Kristina is a singer, actress and songwriter known has a member of the original cast of the musical "Hair" and as the lead singer for the progressive rock group, Curved Air. Kristina was born in Brentwood, England as Sonja Christina Shaw, daughter of a criminologist and granddaughter of Swedish actress Gerda Lundequist. Kristina first appeared on stage at the Swan Folk Club in Romford at the age of thirteen. Her first professional gig was at a Folk Festival in Southgate, London a year or so later. By 1968, while studying at the New College of Speech and Drama, Kristina was helping to run, and performing at, the Wednesday evening sessions at London's Troubadour Folk Club. She was generally known on the folk scene as "Sonja" having previously appeared several times on the British children's TV show Song and Story under that name. Her first manager was Roy Guest of Folk Directions. In 1968, Kristina auditioned for and won the part of "Crissy" in the London stage production of the stage musical Hair. EPISODE 58: A long time member of the Elton John Band, multi-instrumentalist John Mahon’s early days were based in drums, recording and performing jazz, progressive jazz, rock, R&B and pop music with bands in Northeastern Ohio. Moving to Los Angeles in 1983, he continued to play and study music. John has studied with David Garibaldi, Robert Edwards and at the Dick Grove School of Music along with many other teachers around the globe. As a singer and drummer, John was featured with the band Windows and went from there to record and tour with Peter White. This led to tours and gigs with Al Stewart, Helen Reddy, Boney James and Rita Coolidge. As a percussionist and vocalist, John backed up Three Dog Night’s Chuck Negron. Before joining Elton’s band, John’s own band, The Stickmen, included future Elton bassist Bob Birch. As a writer, producer and programmer John has composed soundtrack albums for Wild Whirled Music, smooth jazz songs with Rick Braun and produced commercials for Ray Charles. EPISODE 55: Annie Haslam was born on June 8th, 1947 in Bolton, Lancashire, England and is best known as the lead singer for the symphonic rock band Renaissance and for her long and diverse solo singing career. She has a five-octave vocal range. From the year 2002, Haslam has developed a parallel career as a visual artist, producing paintings on canvas, wood and various musical instruments. In 1977, Annie began her solo career with her album Annie in Wonderland, produced by Roy Wood who played most of the musical instruments, and who also recorded a duet with her on one track. Annie also performed on the Intergalactic Touring Band album with the London Symphony Orchestra and one of her solo albums with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Haslam and Wood were engaged for four years, which she later described as “four of the funniest years of my life”. EPISODE 52: Frank Bello is an American musician, most notable as bassist for the legendary thrash metal band Anthrax. On hiatus from Anthrax, he briefly performed with Helmet, but he has appeared on every Anthrax release since 1985. The band has sold over 10 million albums to date. His new book, Fathers, Brothers, and Sons: Surviving Anguish, Abandonment, and Anthrax, coauthored with Joel McIver, including a foreword by Gene Simmons of KISS is now available via Rare Bird. Born into a family of five, Frank grew up in difficult circumstances. His father abandoned his wife and children, and Frank’s mother moved heaven and earth to keep them fed and educated. Left with no male role model, Frank found inspiration in heavy metal bass players, following their example and forging a career with Anthrax from his early teens—first as a roadie, and then as the group’s bass player. International stardom came Frank’s way by the mid-to-late 1980s, when he was still in his early twenties, but tragedy struck in 1996 when his brother Anthony was murdered in New York. Although the case went to trial, the suspected killer was released without charge after a witness, intimidated by violent elements, withdrew his testimony. EPISODE 48: Florian Opahle is a German rock musician, best known for his work with progressive rock artist Ian Anderson of the band Jethro Tull, with whom he played from 2003 to 2019. From 2017 to 2019 he was the lead guitarist of Anderson's revived version of Jethro Tull. Opahle grew up in Rosenheim. He started learning classical guitar at the age of five, and was later trained on the electric guitar. In 2001 and 2002, he attended master classes with Masayuki Kato. He appeared in Europe, North and South America and Asia on and played with musicians such as Al di Meola, Greg Lake and Leslie Mandoki. He accompanied the singer Masha on her Germany tour. From 2007 to 2008 he studied music arrangement and composition at the German Pop Academy. Opahle took part in several tours with Anderson instead of longtime Jethro Tull guitarist Martin Barre, including on projects in which pieces by Jethro Tull were played with orchestral accompaniment. With Anderson and other musicians, he recorded the albums Thick as a Brick 2 (2012) and Homo Erraticus (2014). From 2017, Anderson toured under the name of Jethro Tull with his regular backing musicians. Opahle is also active as a studio musician and producer, among others for Alexandra Stan. The band grew a massive following locally and started playing much larger venues while Tommy Williams joined the band The Hooters in 2010 and tours with them internationally. EPISODE 35: Mark ‘s career began in earnest in New York City in 1987 when he began working with dance music legend Arthur Baker at Shakedown Sound as an engineer, mixer, programmer, and musician. Between 1987 and 1991 Mark worked with such diverse artists as Quincy Jones, Janet Jackson, The Talking Heads, Fleetwood Mac, Lou Reed, Oingo Boingo, Dream Academy, The Fat Boys, Grayson Hugh, Pete Wylie, Dennis Brown, and the Bee Gees. After working with Prince on the ‘Graffiti Bridge’ album Mark left the world of dance music and remixing to incorporate those sensibilities into mainstream record production - a philosophy he still continues to embrace. During the 1990’s Mark worked with such diverse artists as Nina Hagen, New Order, Natalie Imbruglia, Suzanne Vega, Al Green, Big Audio Dynamite, Shawn Colvin, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Deee-Lite. In 1991 he began a ten-year association with minimalist composer Philip Glass’ New York City recording complex, The Looking Glass, where he produced, engineered, mixed, or performed on albums by The Cure, Hooverphonic, Alisha’s Attic, Duncan Sheik, Dave Navarro, as well as Glass himself. In 1996 Mark co-produced and mixed David Bowie’s ‘Earthling’ album; this marked the beginning of a seven year association with Bowie where Mark either produced, recorded, mixed, or performed on most of Bowie’s musical output. In 1999 Mark switched gears and began a three year stint as Musical Director and guitarist/bassist with Bowie, performing with him in Europe and the U.S. at such shows as the Glastonbury Festival, NetAid, the Montreux Jazz Festival, VH-1 Storytellers, The 9/11 Concert for New York, and the Area 2 Tour with Moby. He supervised the live execution of two complete Bowie albums - ‘Heathen,’ and the 1976 classic ‘Low.’ In 2005 Mark began an extended period of working in Paris, producing and mixing a number of iconic platinum artists including Louise Attaque, Les Rita Mitsuko, Emilie Simon, Alain Bashung, KYO, and Charlie Winston. Kumalo is most known for his fretless bass playing on Paul Simon's 1986 album Graceland, in particular the bass run on "You Can Call Me Al". Kumalo worked as a session musician in South Africa during the 1970s and early 1980s, eventually becoming a top session bassist and accompanying international performers during their South African tours. In 1985, Kumalo was introduced to Paul Simon by producer Hendrick Lebone during the sessions for Simon's Graceland album. Kumalo traveled with Simon to New York to finish the sessions, and after the accompanying concert tour, "spent several years commuting between Soweto and New York City" before permanently settling in the United States. As a teenager, he was an early member of Canned Heat, but left before the band was signed to a recording contract. Andes was a founding member of the band Spirit. He played bass on their first four albums and on some subsequent reunion albums. Following a move back to California, and some session work, Andes joined Heart. He appeared on their final album for Epic Records, Passionworks (1983), and remained with the band until 1993. EPISODE 5: Godfrey Townsend is a New York based guitarist, keyboardist, vocalist, musical director who has worked with many of rock and pop music’s most influential names. In the past 25 years he’s been recruited by major artists including: John Entwistle, bass guitarist of The Who; Jack Bruce, bass guitarist and vocalist of Cream; Dave Mason, guitarist and vocalist of Traffic; Alan Parsons, producer, engineer, recording artist. Godfrey is also the musical director for the hugely successful Happy Together tour. His Eric Clapton Tribute Show has received rave revues for the past 20 years. He and his band have backed dozens of major 60’s artists for over 10 years. He’s been most recently asked to join the legendary British Blues band, The Yardbirds, and currently tours as their lead guitarist.

Misty Boyce

EPISODE 4: A native of New Mexico, Misty Boyce, took to the idea of a career in music at a young age, and began writing songs while in primary school. She would eventually go on to enroll at the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, where she studied jazz piano. After moving to New York City, where she forged her craft both as a songwriter and player, she became a sought-after keyboardist, spending years playing alongside award winning artists including Sara Bareilles, BØRNS, Lord Huron, Sting, Ingrid Michaelson & more, all the while continuing to release records of her own to critical acclaim. Boyce now resides in Los Angeles, and her fourth LP - genesis - will be released September 25th.

Simon Kirke

EPISODE 3: Simon Frederick St George Kirke (born 28 July 1949) is an English rock drummer best known as a member of Free and Bad Company, the latter of which he has been the only continuous member since their inception. In addition to his work with Free and Bad Company, Simon has guested on a long list of recordings by other artists over the years, including albums by Wilson Pickett, Faces, Gov’t Mule, Jim Capaldi and Ron Wood, among countless others and he is often found drumming live on tour with acts like Chuck Berry, Ray Charles, Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and Ringo Starr & His All-Star Band. Simon recently toured with Bad Company and The Eagles' Joe Walsh, and recorded a soul-baring solo record, "All Because of You," with Chicago band, The Empty Pockets, released by The End Records/BMG (2017).

Jim McCarty

EPISODE 2: James Stanley McCarty (born 25 July 1943) is an English musician, best known as the drummer for The Yardbirds and Renaissance. Following Chris Dreja's departure from the Yardbirds in 2013, McCarty became the only member of the band to feature in every lineup. McCarty has performed and recorded with the Yardbirds, Together, Renaissance, Shoot, Illusion, the Yardbirds reunion band Box of Frogs, Stairway, the British Invasion All-Stars, and Pilgrim, as well as under his own name and as the Jim McCarty Band. Since 1992 he has been playing with the reformed Yardbirds. Mr. McCarty was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a founding member of The Yardbirds.

EPISODE 1: Fresh off tour with Christina Aguilera and India Arie, Matt Cusson is an award winning singer/songwriter and pianist who is currently writing, producing and performing all over the world. In the recent past, Matt has worked with Stevie Wonder, Megan Hilty, Leslie Odom Jr., Billy Porter, Livingston and James Taylor, Anderson Paak, Brian McKnight, Idina Menzel, The Roots and many others. Matt also recently won the John Lennon Songwriting Award for best R&B Song with his ballad “Leaving LA”, as well as Best Jazz Song with “One of Those Nights”. Matt is currently working on several singles and EP releases on his own and with many other artists including 9 time Grammy nominee, Dave Koz, who Matt released two singles with last year.
