Briana Gervat is a historian, photographer, and an author who recently published her memoir, There Will Come Soft Rains: A Journey Along the Western Front.

She is the first woman to walk the "Western Front Way" solo.

In 2022, just as the world began to open after the isolation of a global pandemic, Briana Gervat set out to walk the length of the Western Front. Beginning at the border that France shares with Switzerland she went into the wild in search of hope and in search of peace. For 500 miles, she climbed over the mountains of the Vosges, through the battle-scarred landscapes of Verdun, the Marne, and the Somme, all the way to the North Sea in Belgium. It was not only a journey of 36 days, but a journey through a period of history that we have learned nothing from, only how not to repeat it.

Trina is a GenX adventurer, solo traveling across Africa.

Currently, she is traveling overland from Ghana to Namibia, exploring each country as she goes, then around South Africa, then up the east coast towards Turkey.

In 2017, Trina and her husband sold everything and set off to travel the world. He was losing his vision and she wanted him to see as much as possible before it went completely. They traveled mostly in Southeast Asia and Africa, but then she lost him to health issues in 2022. They were in Ghana at the time and Trina paused there for a couple of years of healing and re-organizing.

Back on the road she is now for more adventure.

Will I get through the list before I am told that I will have to stay at home for the rest of my life? A horrible thought it is.

There are so many wonderful places on our planet and I rather be traveling to experience them than listening to all of the bad news on TV. The anger, the hate, the egos, the lies are all depressing.

So I am making the most of it.

My bucket list will keep growing no doubt, but I rather have it that way, than nothing on it.

Starting from Belfast, Chris Donaldson decided to ride his motorbike to Australia, but took a wrong turn and ended up in Argentina

When Chris Donaldson left Belfast in 1979, his original plan was to ride to Australia, on his Moto Guzzi Le Mans bike. He never made it "down under" and ended up in Argentina nearly 2 years later.

He travelled through the Middle East, rode across the Sahara Desert and down to Cape Town, where he hitched a ride on a yacht race back to Europe. He then went to the USA and rode from Canada south through Central America and South America to Buenos Aires.

He recently published a book called 'Going the Wrong Way,' which is an Amazon best-seller.

He decided to finally complete the journey this year, 44 years after his return from South America and take the very same Moto Guzzi to Australia.

Crazy stuff but what a great achievement in life

Faustina Mulnik has been traveling as a digital nomad for the last 2 years. She also studied abroad in college (but got sent home early due to Covid!). She is a huge fan of long-term travel and tries to stay in each place at least 1 month at a time.
She has worked remotely from Mexico, Argentina, Spain, and Italy. and has loads of tips on what to pack, dual/esim cards, how to make friends abroad, etc.

Why wasn't the Digital Nomad experience around when I was growing up in England? Basically because the technology to make it happen was not around back then. If it was, I likely would have been one.

At age 30, she set out to explore the world, and has lived in various countries.
She is the only person I know that has taken an Uber ride for 7 hours. That was along the coast in Mexico.
She has led a full life that has included ups and downs, excitement, and lots crazy stuff, but she is still on a quest to keep it all going.
A lady of many trades, she is a coach, mentor, advisor, speaker, designer, and rehabilitator
She has predicted that she will die at an age of 103 and have written on her tombstone, "I came, I saw, and I conquered the most remarkable life." I believe her.

The Travel Addict in Asia for a month - Philippines, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Singapore, Bhutan, and Thailand.

I had a speaking gig on a cruise ship around Asia for 2 weeks, so I thought I would extend it for a week before and after. Presenting to people from the Americas, Europe, Asia, Australasia, and Africa was fullfilling and it was just great to be in an environment where humans from many parts of the world all got along with each other wonderfully well.
Apart from presenting some history, geography, and cultural facts about countries in Asia, I decided to take on an extreme challenge and climb to Tigers Nest Monastery for the 2nd time, however I was now 9 years older.
The great news is that I made it without passing out or falling off the mountain along the way,
It's a very tough and strenuous trek up steep slopes in a rocky terrain.
The reward for reaching this iconic building is a feeling of substantial achievement and enlightenment, at one of the most sacred places on planet earth.
I visited the following:

Bhutan in the Himalayan Mountains
Chiang Rai, Thailand
Old Phuket Town, Thailand

What to do when you retire in your 60's - do volunteer work in Bangladesh, backpack around Latin America, sleep in a hammock in the jungle - Just normal stuff

Alastair Henry did something not many people would think about doing when retiring in his 60s.
He did volunteer work in Bangladesh, Guyana, and Jamaica. He also did his share of backpacking around the world, an activity normally associated with the younger generation.
This is a prime example of "You are never too old for adventure", which is also a title of one of my presentation topics.
He did surprise me when he stated that more people than we think do these commendable activities, even when they are in the latter part of their lives.

If an opportunity like this was around when I was growing up in England, I would have given it some serious consideration.
Mitch describes his time in Thailand teaching English and also teaching teachers. It may not be the highest paying job on the planet, but the advantages of living inThailand are many:

Going to Scandinavia? You gotta hang out in Stockholm for a few days

It was October when I took the Norwegian Airlines flight to Stockholm. It made me think for a few seconds while in flight that I may be going to Oslo instead.
Staying in Stockholm's Old Town is a great area to be. You can just spend your day walking around.
Coffee shops, Pubs, Historical Buildings, and blocks of ice high up on buildings. The latter you have to be aware of, although there are Ice Managment Staff monitoring and removing any signs of falling ice blocks.
Take a walk to Abba's museum and reminisce about the great music of the 70's and 80's.
Staying at the Victory Hotel was excellent and made me think about Admiral Lord Nelson and the Battle of Trafalgar, and why I would see this in Stockholm.
I sailed through the Stockholm Archipelago which was just spectacular and was honored to be ask to speak from the Cruise Ship's Bridge as we navigated the area.

The Nordics - Happiest Places on Earth. Supporting stats and more..

After listening to this, you may be either surprised or enlightened to the fact that the Nordic countries are rated highly in various world indexes and are desirable places to live, although maybe not all year round.
I have not made up these statistics as they have come from trusted sources.
Maybe before you listen, just jot down the countries you think maybe at the #1 position for Happiest Country, Safest Country, Most Freedom, Human Development, Best Places to Live, etc.

My recent trip to The Norwegian Fjords - some of Mother Nature's best work.

After a flight to Amsterdam and a quick train ride to Rotterdam, I boarded the excellent Celebrity Apex for 9 days in the Norwegian Fjords.
Apart from 4 enrichment talks to a full theater, I was able relax and hike several miles through spectacular countryside.
Geiranger, Flam, Olden, and Bergen were the stops en route.
Camping is popular of course, but for the people who live in these remote areas obviously enjoy their way of life and high standard of living. A few few months of cold weather in the year is obviously not a deterance.
No crowds, superb scenery, very safe, healthy ifestyle, and contentment.
The busy port of Bergen is bustling with life, and Oslo, although modern, is protective of their historic buildins, rightfully so.
Yes, I would go back there and stay in a mountain resort for a few days.

For me it started at an early age. The earlier the better I think.
Why? Because it is an experience, both educational and inspirational, that I will never regret.

There have been mistakes (avoidable, unforeseen, and self-made) but all-in-all it has been enlightening, educational and fulfilling, and I have experienced places of beauty and rich culture.

She worked as a bilingual school psychologist and school administrator for 32 years in public education in California until her retirement in 2002. She and her Peruvian husband have been married since 1966 and have traveled to close to 100 countries.
She has 2 grown sons, who both live in the USA.

Her writing has appeared in several magazines, such as World View Magazine and the California Writers Club Literary Review.

Rice Farming with the locals in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Plus UFOs and foul mouthed birds.

Up front, I want to say that the Dhari Dhevi in Chiang Mai, Thailand, is the best resort I have ever stayed. I also recently heard it closed its doors recently as a result of the covid era. Still trying to fin dout details.
So unlike a hotel, this place exudes peacefulness and sophistication. The Thai hospitality is as gracious and exceptional as you can imagine.
In my quest to mingle with the locals, I decided to help them plant rice in the paddy fields.
Yes, I got caked in mud, but I also met Boonchop the Pink Buffalo in the fields and played some Thai music on authentic Thai instruments afterwards.
I blame the Monsoon Valley wine for the experience with UFOs and foul mouth birds. You have to listen to this for details.

It was all part of the experience in one of my favorite countries.
I need to go back.

A visit to one of the natural wonders of the world, again - Victoria Falls

2023 is the year for another trip of a lifetime.
A time of reflection, as I will be taking a 2nd trip to one of the world's natural wonders, Victoria Falls.
This is the story about my first trip from several years ago, as best as I can remember.
This is happening, primarily because I will be in that region of the world during the latter part of the year.
I may even decide to go swimming in the Zambezi River this time.
FYI, the seven natural wonders are:

Great Barrier Reef.
Mount Everest
Parícutin, Mexico
Aurora Borealis (AKA the northern lights)
Harbor of Rio de Janeiro
Grand Canyon
Victoria Falls

I also look forward to staying at the Anantara Royal Livingstone, a hotel in a Game Park.I wonder who my neighbors will be.

David McKeegan, his wife and 3 sons have lived in South America, Central America, Europe and Asia.
If fact, his 3 sons were born in different continents.
After David and his wife got their masters degree in Barcelona, they created a company to help other expats with their taxation issues and filings to the U.S. Government.
A great service they offer, since it is a complicated process.
Currently enjoying the country of Costa Rica, he has lived in Bali (twice), London, Argentina and Uruguay amongst others.
He has no plans to move back to the USA, apart from visiting family and friends for a few days a year.
This is a classic example of why many Americans are moving to other countries, and have no plans to permanently return.

The Long and Worthwhile Trip into the Middle of Nowhere - Sipadan, Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia

Sipadan is the only oceanic island belonging to Malaysia and was formed by living corals growing on top of an extinct volcano.
Not one person I told that I was going to Sipadan had ever heard of the place. This is not surprising as it located in such a remote location and its significance to the general public is absolutely nothing.
It is widely regarded as one of the best scuba diving locations in the world and a permit has to be granted by the Malaysian government. Humans are only allowed on 100 yards of its beach, as to not upset the local residents, the various wildlife.
The highlight was being surrounded by 1000's of Jackfish at 20 feet below the surface. We got along famously.
The diving is challenging in this remote location and one has to be aware of not making any mistakes, as medical help is too far away to make any difference.

A business trip to Rio de Janeiro. Sounds great doesn't it.
Brazil has been in the news lately for their failure at the World Cup (where they were favorites to win) and political disturbances in the country.
Thinking about the country, it took me back a few years when I embarked on a business trip to Rio, to talk with a company who were interested in reselling my company's products.
This podcast episode reflects on that time.
My host advised me to not venture out on my own, because I am a Gringo. That advice I ignored, however I survived the trip and in addition gained a few memories.
I attended a football game with a couple of the staff I was meeting with, found an Irish Pub, and talked with a few locals out on the town.
Passionate people they are.

Digital Nomads are commonplace these days. 30 years ago it was virtually unheard of. What could be better than running a successful business while being a temporary resident anywhere in the world.

Hanging out with the locals in the most marine biodiverse place on earth - Raja Ampat

Raja Ampat is a place not known to many, except maybe avid scuba divers.

It is not exactly the easiest place to get to, however the tolerance of nighttime flights and unreliable ferry and boat rides was well worth it for me.
After diving in well-known places like the Caribbean, Palau, Sipadan, Fiji, Andaman Sea, to name a few, I quickly came to the conclusion that this area comes out on top, primarily because of the pristine condition of the coral reef system and the variety and quantity of marine life.
I know it is a strange comparison, but activity-wise, underwater around Raja Ampat reminds me of Atlanta Airport on a busy weekday.
So what did I see? Basically, a lot of beautiful and strange fish, including Wobbegong Sharks, Stingrays, Bicolor Angelfish, Blacktip Reef Sharks, Leaf Scorpionfish, Frogfish, Batfish, Papuan Garden Eel, Walking Sharks, Bumphead Parrotfish, and Crocodilefish to name a few.
In addition, I went trekking in the jungle in search of Indonesia's Bird of Paradise.
The local villages came by on my last night and entertained the resort guests with traditional singing and dancing. Just delightful.

Here I go again: Off-the-beaten-path in the World's oldest desert.

When I mentioned that I was going to the country of Namibia to spend time in the world's oldest desert, people asked questions such as, "Where is that?", "Why?", "Are you crazy?"
I somewhat expected that.
After a 15 hour flight from ATL - JNB and then a 2 hour flight to WDH, I was in Windhoek, the capital of Namibia.
I hired a driver for the 5 hour trip to the Desert Hills Lodge in the Namib Desert, which has been there for 55 million years.
Breathtaking scenery kept my GoPro camera busy.
I climbed the world's highest sand dune, took a ride in a hot air balloon, became isolated on the top of a mountain, climbed into a canyon, saw several native animals, and enjoyed the magnificent sunsets.

It is a unique place on our wonderful planet and needs to be on your travel bucket list. I will have YouTube videos posted soon.

Thinking about Berlin, conjures up many thoughts. It is a city of many historical events, with iconic places to visit. People come from all over the world to see the sights and learn a little more about its history.
There are of course many “must visit” places of interest in the city. Within walking distance from my centrally located hotel was Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie, Berliner Dom (Cathedral), Berlin Wall Memorial, Potsdammer Platz, Holocaust Memorial, Reichstag Building, Pergamon Museum and many others.
Being an “Old School” rock music fan for most of my life (60s and 70s era), I convinced myself to visit the Berlin Philharmonic one night and see the orchestra in action.
"Nothing like a live symphony performance to feed and compose the soul.”
If you are in Europe, pay a visit for a few days. Time will be well spent.

Finally visited Lithuania to complete my tour of the Baltic countries, in spite of threats from the Kremlin.

Even the day before I left Manchester Airport, Russia was threatening Lithuania. Many people may have cancelled travel plans, but for reasons of travel addiction, I chose to visit.
This country needs to be left alone to enjoy their freedom and way of life.
Steeped in history and eccentricity, Vilnius deserves a visit, especially the area of the "Old Town."
Outdoor cafes and restaurants are in abundance and there are many great sights to see.
Vilnius Cathedral, Hill of Crosses, Hill of Three Crosses, Gediminas Castle, St. Anne's Church, Museum of Illusions, KGB Museum, and plenty more.
Walk everywhere, providing it is not the depth of winter. Listen to this podcast for a few ideas.
The city is clean, very safe, welcoming, with an atmosphere of sophistication.
I walked several miles a day, and occasionally stopping for a coffee or a beer if late in the afternoon.
Fly up to the Baltics whether by SAS or Air Baltic. It is a short journey.

Brighde Reed was raised in the UK, moved to Australia, and has also lived in 6 other countries. She spent a decade in tourism before heading into education before heading back to tourism where she now has a business along with her partner. They are based in beautiful Squamish, BC, in Canada.
Personally, I have considered trying to become a vegetarian or vegan myself. I tend to think it has plenty of health benefits. However, Brighde will explain everything.

It had to happen.
With a few edited chapters and one addition, the contents appear to be more relevant today in our troubled World than ever before.
Russia, China, airline chaos, respectfulness of foreign cultures, communication between countries around the world, to name a few.
The big question is, "WHY?"
At least 3 chapters, the decision to be brutally honest about the real reason I was in these places are now brought to light.
Explanation: The original version steered away from the facts of why I was actually in Cairo, Egypt, Moscow, Russia and Geneva, Switzerland.
Think Gulf Crisis, the end of the Soviet Union, and the worldwide center of diplomacy for the United Nations.
Reasons: Shyness, reservations about including these reasons due to thoughts of getting into trouble with my previous employer at the time, to name two. Thankfully, I am more of a free spirit these days, more opinionated, and less worried about upsetting people.
The one addition is about a fulfilling business trip to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where I was labelled as a Gringo.
We all have travel stories to tell, whether conducting business or taking a vacation.
In this book, I detail business travel experiences to Mexico, El Salvador, Peru, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Belize, Switzerland, Russia (Soviet Union), Egypt, China, South Africa, Australia, Netherlands, India, Japan, Hong Kong, Caribbean and others.

Get out of town. Start hitchhiking. Pick up jobs wherever you can. Work for free. Sleep on a beach.
It sounds a bit crazy, but I don't think Scott will look back on his life and have any regrets. Obviously an educational experience in one sense, but courageous and maybe reckless in another.

Relaxation, Adventure, Beauty and Rich Culture in Luang Prabang in Laos - my recent visit

After visiting Vientiane in Laos a few years before for an enjoyable experience, it was time to take a trip to Luang Prabang, where the Nam Khan and Mekong Rivers meet. Historically, it was the Royal Capital of the country until 1975 and it's know for many Buddhist temples.
It became a UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1995 for its well preserve architecture.
I found the place to be very enjoyable and it gave me a feeling of being "off-the-beaten-path".
Walking or biking, there is much to see and do, with luxury high-end and budget accommodation available.
I stayed in the city center and enjoyed relaxed atmosphere.
There is noticeable lack of vehicles and people compared to most places you would have visited, which is part of its beauty.
I even had afternoon tea at a café, which overlooked the meeting point of the Nam Khan and Mekong rivers.
Then I left town to go the chaotic city of Bangkok.

Let's get the history out of the way. The country became independent from Yugoslavia in 1992.
Ljubljana, Slovenia may be unknown to many people, but if you have been there, you will know that it is a very enjoyable place to visit for a few days, especially the Old Town.
Aside from the city's "hard to pronounce" name, it is full of pleasant surprises. Spotlessly clean, very safe, welcoming, and lots of character are good assets. Personally, I felt quite chilled out there.
Enjoy St. Nicholas' Cathedral and the Medieval Castle. Take a day trip to Lake Bled for spectacular scenery.
My stay at the boutique Vander Urbani Hotel in the Old Town was excellent. There are cafes and restaurants everywhere, so you will be spoiled for lunch and dinner. Slovenia even makes its own wine, which is surprisingly good.
Above all, it is just very pleasant and safe to walk around the cobble stone streets, so enjoy the vibe.
Would I go back there? Absolutely.

A fulfilling life it has been for Lya Badgley. It is not often you meet someone who was born in Yangon, Myanmar. Listen to her experience living in this country which has historically never been too far away from headline news. You will be very surprised.
In addition, she spent a year working at the Tuol Sleng Museum in Phnom Penh, Cambodia performing admirable work in an effort to bring war criminals to justice.
As a previous visitor to the Killing Fields just outside of Cambodia's capital, I was personally shocked and horrified to learn what transpired during the late 60's and early 70's.
Myself and Lya have spent a lot of time in S.E. Asia, so we had plenty to talk about, and also have the desire to get back over before too long.

The Gusty Winds of Change - Looking back at my time in Moscow during the final days of the Soviet Union

Sometimes you just have to look back at your life and relive an experience.
With Ukraine and Russia recently being in the news, my Moscow experience back in 1991 vividly came back to me.
A few of us might remember the time when the Soviet Union collapsed and Mikhail Gorbachev's reign came to an end.
Now it is Russia that includes the great city of Moscow.
I was in Moscow during the final days of the Soviet Union's existence in December, 1991, which was an unbelievable time in our World's history.
My reason for being there was to assist the U.S. Embassy on some technical challenges with their telecommunications equipment. Communication, as fundamental as it was back in those days compared to today, was paramount during those difficult times.
The fact that I was not even a U.S. citizen at that time added a little complication to the proceedings, but I was honored to help.
Today I am both a U.K. and USA citizen.
The human spirit always prevails, even through challenging times, and I gained a new found respect for the local people.
I even bumped into the legendary band, The Scorpions, who had just played a concert in Moscow.
Take a listen to my exploits during that trip, some of them a little daring and risky, but I survived to tell the story.
Memories for a lifetime.

Maybe there is an underlying science in the management of parking lots to make them efficient and profitable.
The reason this became "a thing" with me is due to an experience I encountered at Atlanta Airport, the World's busiest.
This episode of stupidity is documented in my book "Travel Diaries of an Atypical Businessman - Unfiltered".
I am pretty sure many of you have experienced something similar or bizarre as this, but based on the fact that I tried my best to be efficient and organized as possible, there is always the unplanned, the poor judgments, the unfortunate, and things beyond our control that get in the way.
This whole story is ridiculous that it had to be documented and spoken.

I like these types of Podcasts. Honest, fun and educational. Peter shares his knowledge and experience gained from teaching overseas and being a Digital Nomad.
Personally, I wish I had known about teaching overseas when I was in my 20's. It would have been a serious consideration.
The great thing about temporarily living in another country, is an appreciation of how people live and work in other areas of the world. While Peter was teaching, he was learning things himself.
Travel is without doubt an educational experience, and although we all love our country of birth or where we currently live, there is one thing that stands out. It is the realization that our home country of choice may not be the best in the world at everything it does.
This means we can all learn a little from each other.
Whether you study World Indexes or not, or just consider factors such as freedom, healthcare, safety, happiness, intelligence, innovation, IQ, education, stability, to name just a few, one thing is certain and that is any single country will not take the #1 position in every category, but more likely just one or two at the most.
Peter enjoyed his teaching experience in South Korea so much, that he may actually do it again.

In an attempt to "fit in" with the locals in foreign lands, there are culture adjustments and mannerisms to consider, which instils a feeling of trust and friendship, key ingredients for a successful business partnership.
Acceptance, tolerance, social behavior, willingness, enthusiasm, honesty, are good traits when abroad, but sampling the local food and drink is also admirable. And yes, you could be eating an animal that you would not normally consider or think repulsive.
It's all good and mostly fun.

A lot of people asked the question, "why?" when I mentioned I was visiting the Ukraine. My answer was a prompt "why not?"
It became independent from Russia after the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. There of course is plenty of influence in the city from the Soviet days.
As I was in Moscow during the final week of the Soviet Union's existence, I was amazed at the architecture in the city and I thought Kiev might be just as dramatic. I was not disappointed.
There was a language barrier of course, but it mattered not. I walked 6 miles a day to see some of the wonderful buildings, with a map and iPhone GPS in hand.
There was a little edginess in the city at the time due to political issues, but I did not let that worry me, in spite of a large protest with armed police and military present on my final day.
I stayed adjacent to Independence Square, an important part of the city.
The National Opera House, St. Sophia’s Cathedral, St. Elijah Church, Kiev Founders Statue, The Great Lavra Bell House, Vydubychi Monastery, St. Pantheleimon Nunnery, The Cathedral of St. Pantaleon are just a few of the sites to see, but St. Michaels Monastery was the standout for me.
All in all, I am so happy I made the trip.
The adventure continues and so does the learning experience.

When material things and wealth do not become the most important thing in a person's life, but rather the need to help other people, even if just for a few months, is very commendable. Amy and her husband were living comfortably in a NYC apartment but decided to sell all of their belongings and buy a one-way ticket to Ghana to volunteer at a breast cancer non-profit facility.
Covid came along and they ended up being stuck in Ghana for 7 months. Many people made comments such as, "That must have sucked!" I wasn't surprised to hear Amy say, "It didn't suck at all." In fact it was an experience they will treasure for a long time.

You may not be aware that Krakow, Poland is extremely significant in our history, but not necessarily in a good way.
The Auschwitz camps are located about an hour's drive from the city and if we cast our minds back to WWII from the 1940's, it represents one of the most reprehensible times in the last century.
This is one time you will need to book an organized tour, as doing it yourself will not provide you with the full story of what happened in those dark days.
It is a long day, especially if you combine that visit with a trip to the Salt Mines. My trip was over a period of 11 hours, however it was well worth getting the educational tour, which in a way makes you appreciate how lucky we are these days in comparison, even when you throw in the Covid factor.
Apart from the horrors of Auschwitz, the shining star of the day was being 400ft down in the Salt Mines inside St. Minga's Chapel.
Pay a visit to Schindler's Factory, walk around the Jewish section of town, and hang out in the vibrant Main Square.
Let your emotions run wild for a few days.

International travel in the Covid era. An example of how to prepare. Rules & Regulations.

To many, the thought of traveling anywhere these days is too problematic to even consider. Add to that, traveling overseas presents additional anxiety in the worry that you may not have the correct requirements fulfilled for your destination. This of course could be a problem after spending your hard earned money on a plane ticket and then getting turned away by immigration in a foreign country or even worse, being forced to undergo quarantine.
I took on an itinerary recently that took me to the U.K., Poland, Ukraine, and Slovenia, all with entry requirements that were a little different from each other.
This audio details my challenges and and backup plans, with information on where to obtain the best information on line to lessen the confusion.
The information on the Internet can be outdated, confusing, conflicting and ambiguous. It will take sometime to feel confident that you have all your "ducks in a row", but for me, the end result was well worth it,
Overall, being vaccinated is probably the most important factor.

Many of us have heard about the wild escapades of some rock bands while on tour. You know who they are. I remember a few headlines from the 70's and 80's from prominent musicians who got themselves in various degrees of trouble. Most of us basically laughed it off without showing too much disdain for the culprits.
Evan was not one of those musicians, but rather had the un-enviable job of keeping things together on the road while touring around Europe.
He is also an event coordinator, virtual tour creator and the podcast host of Notes from the Road.
Now, like many of us, he does have a "to do" list which is important in this fragile world of ours. The importance of having something to look forward to, whether it is fulfilling a "bucket list" item or traveling to a destination in the World, is being planned by many.
He is a coffee lover and connoisseur also, much as I am with tea (The British in me).

Travel is basically Gary Arndt's life. After his travels to many places around the world, he does not have much time for anything else.
Rarely will you meet a person like this, with so much insight and knowledge about the cultures and heritage of our world.
I particularly enjoyed his experience in Namibia, a country which is on my "Bucket List". It is now on the top of that list, where the only thing stopping me getting on the plane is the current travel restrictions.
Like me, Gary is frustrated with what the pandemic has done to our aspirations, so he started a podcast called "This Week in Travel". He also hosts the Everything Everywhere podcast.

Ian Pilbeam's epic travel story about backpacking around the World for a year with his wife and two kids age 8 and 10

When Ian first told me about this travel story, I honestly thought he was kidding. One thing is taking your kids on a vacation, but it's a whole different level of adventure and "bravery" if you wish, to embark on a round the World trip for a year to places you may not think were "kid compatible."
Add to that, this feat was accomplished in 2008 and 2009, an era of economic downturn.
Imagine quitting your secure job right before a recession to backpack around the world with an 8 and 10 year old. What would it be like to be that parent, let alone that child?
Never has this story been more relevant than at a time when travel is restricted, family holidays are on hold and parents are having to cope with home schooling.
This epic journey will of course be something that every member of the family will cherish forever. Great memories from adventures we did in the past stay with us and are more important than materialistic things.
I have a lot of respect for Ian in this accomplishment.

Lois was a late starter when it came to traveling, but she has certainly made up for lost time. At age 54, she set out to visit many countries, 49 to date, but many of her destinations of choice are to locations most of us would never consider.
They were mostly solo adventures but visiting nations such as Cuba, Haiti, Pakistan, Iraq, Iran, Lebanon and India to name a few, begs the question of, "So why not go to the more popular and safer places such as Italy, UK, France, Spain, USA, Thailand, Australia and many more?"
Lois explains why and it makes sense, at least to me. Landing in Lebanon and renting a car is pushing the limits of normal behavior, but she deserves much credit for adding that element of risk to her adventures.

Originally from Australia, he has been based in London for the last 4 years. So picture this, an Aussie comedian with a touch of that dry English humor mixing with the locals in remote places of diverse cultures. It just cannot be incident free.

Sharon Dukett is an award-winning author who was previously a computer programmer, project manager, and deputy director in state government.
Her life wasn't always perfect, even in her teenage years.
At the grand old age of 16, Sharon and her sister ran away from home without telling her parents. She even talked her ex-boyfriend into driving them across the country to California.
Talk about trying to get as far away as possible! It could have just been Massachusetts, but that would have been too easy.
If that wasn't brave enough, she then hitchhiked across 15 States and 6 Canadian Provinces.
A memoir had to be written in later years, so the book No Rules was published. It is about how a life of caution and conservatism lead to journey of the unexpected.

Extreme Traveler with Expeditions of Endurance - Mike Laird goes to places where most would not dare to venture

Mike Laird is a Travel Writer and a Film Maker but is also well known for taking on extreme challenges in some very remote places on the planet. His collection of achievements are many and pretty unique.
Trekking solo to the Magnetic North Pole, cycling from Lands End to John O'Groats in Great Britain, crossing Lake Baikal on foot and ski, Living in the Outer Hebrides for 13 months without communication, an attempt at swimming the English Channel, are just a few of his escapades.
Mike and I are both in a similar mindset, where we are likely to "bite the dust" on the job so to speak. Travel is in our blood and it's something we feel we must do to fulfill our lives. We are not alone either.
He has also visited Kabul, Afghanistan, Syria, Libya, Mongolia, Bolivia, Ethiopia, traveled from Moscow to Siberia, plus numerous other places that most people would never dare to consider.

70 countries by the age of 22 seems somewhat like an impossible feat or maybe an addiction of sorts. Sounds a little like yours truly.
You are where you go is a saying that makes sense to me. Wherever you go in the world, it somehow becomes a part of you, mainly because of the education it blesses you with. The memories are significant of course, whether pleasurable, disappointing, stressful or blissful.
Caitlyn was mainly studying abroad and just having the opportunity to do that is fantastic. How could college be so much fun was my initial thought.
In my day or way back when, such a life was not possible, however I am trying to make up for that now.
She shares her experiences in diverse places such as Patagonia, Laos, Antarctica, Slovenia and Ghana. She was even in Zimbabwe when Covid came along and was forced to return home.

Add to that, sleeping in strangers cars and parking lots, losing her voice in Egypt, plus other raw adventures. Federica is a very cool lady whose adventurous spirit will make you shake your head and smile.
Admittedly, she has done a few risque things that would not be considerations for the vast majority of the people on planet earth, but in all due respect she has gained a boatload of decent memories from her travels and learnt much along the way.

Yep, this is "Living on the Edge" stuff. Ian is an Australian but currently living in London for this moment in time. He has lived on 5 continents, so chances are that he'll be going somewhere else quite soon.
He is an International Safety and Performance Coach (for humans and organizations), which he explains in detail on this podcast episode. In one sentence, it is basically the science of systems-driven behavior and understanding of how and why people make mistakes.
I always thought that there was some science reasoning behind my occasional decision making process.
This occupation involves travel and sometimes to places where most of us would not even consider for a split second.
Listen to why he was involved in some admirable work in North Korea and yes he did send a bouquet of flowers to the country's glorious leader as a goodwill gesture. With near misses in Libya and the Congo that could have ended badly, he has swam with great white sharks, climbed an active volcano and consumed jungle plant medicine to name a few.

His life is one big adventure, but even though some of his activities are somewhat risky, it is all educational and fulfilling.

Colombia, Amsterdam, Stonehenge, Magic Mushrooms and more dubious stuff with Irishman Buck Mulligan. Buck is also a teetotaler, which in the whole scheme of things seems rather eccentric or perplexing, but that is just my candid opinion.
Author of the book "Adventures on Drugs" which tells the story of visiting 6 countries to take the 6 drugs that they are associated with seems a little embarrassing for those nations in question, maybe. However, after listening to Buck, any hint of embarrassment disappeared pretty quickly.
There is reason and some logic to these escapades, even the part about attending Solstice at Stonehenge. With regards to the prehistoric monument on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England , it's actually a "thing to do." Suffice to say, I must have led a rather sheltered life growing up there, because I have never heard of it.
Regardless, listen to the stories surrounding his travels to places for reasons every else does not.
Buck does have a "BUCKet List" also, which includes Iran, Thailand, and others.

After listening to Lisa for 45 minutes, you'll come to the realization of how fortunate we are.
She travels to Anand on the west coast of India, the City of God adjacent to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and La Chureca on the outskirts of Managua, Nicaragua.
Why, you may ask? Because she wanted to.
Not only do these places exhibit extreme poverty, but they also present an element of risk and danger.
She has just released a new book called Faithful Nomad that has an intriguing subtitle of "Seven Rules for Finding Your Path... When There's No Destination."

My Need for Seclusion - The Mongolian Wilderness

Unsurpassed scenery, large birds of prey, nomads, camping, remoteness, temples, peacefulness, isolation are just a few of the words to describe the Mongolian Wilderness. My trip took me from North-Eastern Thailand via Bangkok to Beijing, China, where I stayed in a Transit Hotel for a few hours before the 1+ hour flight to Ulan Bator in Mongolia.
After staying in the city for a couple of days, I ventured into the wilderness, including Terelj National Park. The excellent Selena Travel Group planned my transport and guide for the excursion. Note: You could do this yourself, but getting lost or car breaking down would not be good.
The further away from UB I ventured, the more sparse it became.
I experienced: camping in a Ger, getting up close and personal with a large Vulture and a White Eagle, spending time with a Nomadic family at their home, trekking up to Aryaval Monastery, climbing into the horse's head of the Genghis Khan Statue, to name a few.
It was a very fulfilling adventure as well as educational.
I was back in UB for Mother's and Children's Day, a celebration of family, which is a very important part of Mongolian culture.
I also found an Irish Pub and a Mongolian Massage Parlor. All good.
Finally departed on a MIAT flight to Hong Kong. Another Bucket List item checked off.
Maybe one to add to yours.

I read Alex's profile and thought, "these types of jobs weren't around when I was growing up." That's just me being jealous.
Anyway, in this conversation, we talk about traveling for work and future travel when all of this Covid mess is behind us.

With both of these occupations, the word "travel" stands out, however like myself, he has a "Bucket List" which he has been working on during the relative "confinement" of 2020.
We talked about the state of todays game of football, with the use of the VAR and overreaction by players to stiff tackles. I am a little "Old School" on this subject, so you'll have to excuse my whining (aka whinging across the pond).
He's in a good place, although just waiting for the chance to travel more. Sounds somewhat like "Yours Truly."

Geoff Devito has been consulting in the travel, tourism, and hospitality business for many years, however, in a capacity that you would never expect.

Two Hours in Myanmar - well, sort of....

Myanmar is never too far from making news headlines. It is a country that has endured much turmoil in its history, especially during World War II. More recently there was the UN reports for human right violations under military rule, but in 2010, a civilian government was installed, and then shortly afterwards it was approachable in my humble opinion.
On the good side, it is a country of priceless treasures.
2014 came about.
After careful planning, I took the trip. This came to a grinding halt at immigration, where I was refused entry and put inside a "Holding Room" before taking the last flight out of town.
There were a few anxious moments, but I lived to tell the story.
It cost me $ 400 for a non-refundable hotel bill, but I returned in 2015 for a more successful trip.
Advice - do not argue with immigration officers in Myanmar.

Based just outside Singapore, one of my favorite places on the planet, is where I found Jermaine Cheathem, an entrepreneur with his own set of rules that achieves a satisfying lifestyle for himself.
We all want to be happy and contented in life, but sometimes when the pressure of work is so intense, there is little time to just chill out and do more recreational activities.
Many entrepreneurs become successful, and the more they do, the more they want to do. It is almost like confidence in overdrive, however with growth, there will always be challenges, stress, missteps, employee and customer issues along the way.
This could also be said for wealth.
When is enough, enough?
Without sounding religious, the Buddhists have the following statement absolutely correct, "Wealth does not equate to happiness."
Jermane explains his work ethic. His company is almost on auto-pilot, which provides him space and time to do the things he loves.
His common sense approach of "keeping it simple", relatively speaking, is a path many should follow.
No one gets out of this place alive, but don't work yourself to death when you don't have to.

A brief visit to St. Petersburg, Russia - a city of greatness

My first visit to Russia was back in 1990 to Moscow during the final days of the Soviet Union's existence and of course the end of communism. That episode is documented in the "Travel Diaries of an Atypical Businessman - Unfiltered" book in the chapter "The Gusty Winds of Change."
My trip to St. Petersburg, Russia, although brief, was for pleasure reasons, as opposed to my working trip to Moscow all those years ago.
In spite of government web site warnings and the closure of the U.S. consulate due to a spat between the two countries, I deemed it safe enough.
St. Petersburg is steeped in history and turmoil. In addition, the architecture and iconic buildings are spectacular. Kazan Cathedral, Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, Peter and Paul Fortress, Hermitage Museum are just a few must see places.
Theater is also big business in the city, however I didn't get to experience either an opera or classical music concert on this trip. I'll just have to go back.
I stayed at the very nice Corinthia Hotel on Nevsky Prospect, an ideal location in the middle of the city, within walking distance of the main sites to explore.
Obtaining a visa is a bit of a process, but well worth the time and expense.
My only regret is that I did not stay a few extra days.

How NOT to travel the World. First hand experiences by Australian Bing Fraser.

There's nothing like starting out with a bang on your very first podcast hosting gig. Joining me was Bing Fraser from a land down under, where women glow and men plunder.
He has some candid advice on how NOT to travel around the world, by actual experiences of being arrested, losing his front teeth, a case of schizophrenia, being robbed a few times, and cracking his skull open. Realistically he should be dead, but survived to tell the stories.
For those of us who have traveled to various places in the world, we likely have had a few moments of nervousness or regret, but we all learn from our mistakes.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained I say.
Bing lives in the great city of Sydney, which, if you haven't been there already, add it to your Bucket List. While you are there, take a few days to visit New Zealand or one of the South Pacific Islands.

How I innocently ended up in the world’s wildest city – Pattaya, Thailand

Patttaya diehards will look at this title and say BS and to be honest my explanation for being there is somewhat lame.
My aim was to scuba dive around the islands of nearby Koh Khrok and Koh Larn. Not the best diving in the world, but decent enough to tempt me away from a 2-3 day layover in Bangkok.
The diving never happened because of a sinus infection, likely from the international flight into BKK Airport. Yep, the old "sinus infection excuse" but I did have to go to the hospital to get checked out.
Aside from that, I was able to venture out at night for a beer or two along Walking Street. My eyes nearly popped out of my head, when I encountered the wildest nightlife I have ever experienced. Hundreds of bars, cabarets of naughtiness, 24-hour nightclubs, live music, freelance ladies of the night, and even a Muay Thai boxing ring. You have to see it to believe it. Then you get sucked in to the electric atmosphere with the many tourists and ex-pats.
What was once a quiet fishing village is now the craziest party town on the planet. Check it out on You Tube or Google, you'll see what I mean.
I stayed 2 nights before I had to fly to somewhere a little saner and peaceful.
If risque activities offend you, then don't go there. For me, not much on this planet surprises me any more these days. However, I can look back on this trip and smile a little.
Pattaya is a city that ticks along like a well-oiled machine. Job opportunities and paying customers abound.
Go there, I dare you.

Bats, Frog Fish and Nature's Wonders in Palawan

Palawan is mostly always included in the top 10 of World's Best Islands by the premier travel magazines. From the stunning landscape and beaches of El Nido in the north to the natural and unspoiled beauty further south, it is worth a few days of your time. Even the typical Filipino will have this island of their country on the "Bucket List."
I stayed in Puerto Princesa, the main city, to be close to great scuba diving and one of the Natural Wonders of the World, The Underground River.
Two days of exquisite diving in the unbelievable calm waters provided me with time to completely chill out.
Add to that, a boat ride into a cave with spectacular and haunting rock formations. Did I mention bats? Yes, there are loads of them in there. It's their home. Just had to remember to keep my mouth closed while looking upward.

A trip to the magical Taj Mahal - A wonder of the World

Since I was on official business in India, I extended my stay for the very worthwhile trip to one of the wonders of the World, The Taj Mahal.
Located in Agra, about a 4 hour drive from the chaotic city of Delhi, I booked an excursion. To keep my sanity, I would never drive in and around Delhi for any amount of $.
The Taj Mahal is a magical place with unique architecture made from white marble. As the sun rises and sets, the light spawns off the colors of the rainbow.
Commissioned by Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died while giving birth to their 14th child, it emits an aura of something special and important.
The musician Yanni played his epic "Tribute" concert on the grounds, a perfect complement to enhance its beauty. It's on video by the way.

Over indulgence in The City of Angels - Angeles City, Philippines

I went there twice, so you may ask the question of why? Actually, I don't have a believable answer other than it was a 2 day layover in Manila. It is not for the faint of heart, intolerant, or easily offended type of people.
Although the city has an extensive history including American occupancy, it is today a haven for the partying crowd and the odd inquisitive type of individual such as myself.
The famous "Over the Top" ABC Hotel (Angeles Beach Club) beckoned me, so I was led into temptation to experience what all the fuss was about.
Think of these words from the Eagles song Hotel California. "You can check out anytime you want, but you can never leave." Just somehow seems appropriate.
If it crosses my mind to consider anther visit, I vow to send myself to counselling.

Mae West's famous quote applies here. "You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough."

Go and visit, I dare you.

Which is the World's greatest country? Some food for thought

Which is the World's greatest country? An intriguing question isn't it.

Living in the USA, you may have heard the statement from friends, relatives and politicians, "We are the greatest country in the World." People in other countries may say the same thing about their land. I am an inquisitive type of person, so I have replied to that statement a few times with the question of, "So why are we the greatest country in the World?" The response is typically either silence or something that does not answer the question.

This presentation is about various world indexes and rankings that are factors in determining our standard of living. While some countries can take credit for being the best at one thing, they may not excel at another. We probably would do better if we learned a little from each other.

Included in this 30 minutes spiel are responses to the, "Why are we the greatest?" question and various factual information from many documented trustworthy sources that support such parameters as: happiness, quality of life, corruption, human development, safest, mortality, longevity, health care, smartest, social progress, environmentally correct, stability, freedom, etc.

You may be surprised at the answers.

Like a sudden hope in the dark night of the soul - Yangon, Myanmar

I went there twice, but the first time they would not let me in. Managed to get on the last flight out of town.
One year later was the second attempt, however successful this time. A poor country with riches beyond belief. Shwedagon and Botataung Pagodas are both priceless and breathtaking in appearance.
Areas of British colonialism such as Holy Trinity Cathedral and the Strand Hotel made me think I was back in the old country for a moment. In fact, there are pockets of Brits still living there.
Food markets with unrecognizable meat and veggies. A band playing the Heart song "Alone" to me as I sat in a club by myself while being teased by flirtatious local girls. Feelings of being kidnapped by a taxi driver. Walking between pubs and getting lost at night. Guard dogs roaming the streets.
Apart from that, just a normal type of trip you could say.

A Brit doing business in Argentina - mishaps, fun & edginess

There is nothing quite like visiting Latin America to conduct business. However me, the Brit, visiting Buenos Aires, Argentina maybe classed as biting off more than being able to chew.
Remember history - the Falklands War in 1982, the World Cup of 1966, Maradona's "Hand of God" goal in 1986. There were a few incidents that could rear their ugly head.
Formal meetings, attending a local soccer game between rivals, cow glands for lunch, massive steaks, dog walking in bulk, an economic collapse, bars of questionable merit, plus others. All in the quest to succeed in business.
I came through unscathed and intend to go back one day so I can learn the Tango and visit Patagonia.
Fulfilling experience, passionate people, great city.

A Little Closer to Shangri-La. My epic journey to Lhasa, Tibet

A long awaited Bucket List item was finally fulfilled. A long trip via Shanghai (incl. a ride on the world's fastest train) and Chengdu (incl. a trip to the Panda Rehabilitation Center) in China.
Tibetan culture is unlike any other in the World. Going back in time to a region that is steeped in religion and spirituality with iconic temples and palaces is an truly epic adventure.
Potala Palace, The Dalai Lama's residence before the uprising in 1959 was worth the trip by itself, but there is so much more to see and enjoy.
Jokhang Temple, Sera Monastery, Drepung Monastery, Debating Monks, Stir Fried Yak, my accommodation of the House of Shambhala, Smoldering Juniper, Himalayan Mountains, and the list goes on. Memories are precious.
There's a process in getting permits and traveling there, but the information is here in this broadcast.
If you have one trip left in you, this could be it.

The trek to Tigers Nest Monastery in Bhutan

A description of my awesome adventure to the country of Bhutan and my climb to Tigers Nest Monastery, situated high up on a rock face in the Himalayan Mountains. Just google it to see a picture and you''ll think it is unreachable.
The adrenaline rush from the climb was quickly diminished on entering a meditation room to a feeling of inner peace and visions of my parents. It was indeed a spiritual moment, one that I have never experienced before. Words cannot adequately describe that feeling.
The following day, I witnessed the King's birthday celebration at the national soccer stadium.
Bhutan is a happy and peaceful country and I was very fortunate to have spent a few days in a land that develops and modernizes at its own pace.
