Luke, a Kiwi, had previously represented New Zealand at the Nations Cup in Europe and the United States, and with his current jumping partner Gangster WW, had won an FEI World Cup Qualifier round in December 2024. Hardly able to believe his luck, he was more than happy to act as the replacement.

There was the sensationalist coverage of the Mankini incident, news of his 2024 Paris Olympics qualification with long-time partner Virgil, and most recently, reports of a fall during cross country training that landed him in ICU with a badly broken femur, fractured pelvis, elbow and ribs, plus heavy concussion.

You might think those injuries would put the 51-year-old out of contention for Paris, but don’t bet on it!

Currently making extraordinary progress in his rehabilitation program, Shane is no stranger to set backs. Over the years he has broken wrists, arms, legs and ribs. A kick to the head required facial reconstruction and a week in an induced coma, and in 2001, he was diagnosed with thyroid cancer.

And there have been other disappointments. Despite selection for the Australian eventing team in the 1996 and 2012 Olympics, he missed both when first lameness and then a minor injury just days before competition ruled his horses out.

Thinking she was in heaven, she spent her weekends grooming and riding polo ponies, until her parents allowed her to lease a horse. Through school she competed as much as possible in Interschool and Pony Club events, overcoming the absence of a float by convincing other riders to take her with them!

After leaving school, she spent time with Tom Doyle, a vet and a rider, and had the opportunity to ride multiple horses and help out with vet work. She also had lessons with Tony Manca, and gained further experience working in Kevin McNab’s yard, where she became hooked on the idea of a career with horses. She applied for was accepted into the University of Queensland’s Veterinary Science program, where she learned how to work with lame and injured horses, and how to breed them.

It was while she was at Kevin McNab’s stable that she met her husband Shane Davidson. While completing her degree, she continued to compete and train horses at the Davidson family’s property Fairbanks Stud, where Shane taught her to break-in and start young horses according to the German system.

Eventually striking out on their own, the couple founded Davidson Equestrian, with a focus on producing horses from birth to top level competition. Additionally, they’re kept busy teaching young riders, and training, campaigning and producing horses for sale.

Mattea is also actively engaged as an equine veterinarian, focusing on equine reproduction and dentistry. As a qualified and experienced vet she handles all the stud work, and is very particular about the welfare of all the horses, ensuring health and fitness levels are maintained to high standards.

]]> Mattea was first introduced to horses through a school friend whose father started the Brisbane Polo Club. Thinking she was in heaven, she spent her weekends grooming and riding polo ponies, until her parents allowed her to lease a horse. Through school she competed as much as possible in Interschool and Pony Club events, overcoming the absence of a float by convincing other riders to take her with them!

After leaving school, she spent time with Tom Doyle, a vet and a rider, and had the opportunity to ride multiple horses and help out with vet work. She also had lessons with Tony Manca, and gained further experience working in Kevin McNab’s yard, where she became hooked on the idea of a career with horses. In this episode, Charlie Brister chats with Australian Para Dressage Rider, Lisa Martin about the upcoming FEI World Equestrian Games, how she is preparing along with her current training schedule.  Lisa was born into a family of Australian Stock Horse breeders, and has carved out a successful career as an international dressage competitor and coach. However, when Lisa was 28 she was involved in a horse riding accident that split her fibula. A fall six weeks later caused even further damage to her leg and doctors were unsure it could be saved. She didn’t take up this offer until early 2016 when Equestrian Australia’s National Performance Director Julia Battams encouraged her to do so, and after hearing of the opportunities for athletes in the sport, Lisa set herself the goal of competing at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. Or am I misreading the situation entirely?

It was a natural progression for Dave to take on an equestrian lifestyle.

Dave was a successful junior and young rider competing at Agricultural, Royal and World Cup shows throughout Australia. He was the 15-17yrs and 17-25yrs state show jumping champion for 3 consecutive years and the winner of the 1st young rider event at Sydney Royal in 1999. After completing university and working for 4 years as a high school PDHPE teacher, Dave took the plunge to become a professional rider and coach in Sydney.

In 2008 Dave made the long show trip with a team of horses all the way to Cairns where he won the illustrious Cairns high jump, jumping 2.32 meters; only 17cm short of the world record. The Sydney move found Dave turning his hand to many facets of the equestrian world, not only show jumping but coaching, eventing, breaking, training and even stunt riding. He has appeared on the TV series Wild Boys, Australia: the documentary, and he even rubbed shoulders with Johnny Depp on the filming of Pirates of the Caribbean 5.

Dave is very passionate about his coaching and training. He coaches all levels and has produced many elite level horses and riders. In 2014 Dave was nominated for the Domestic Athlete of the Year Award while his mount RR Dyranta won Domestic Horse of the year. With many wins and places on the World Cup circuit, two Australian senior titles and two NSW team titles in the past few years, Dave continues to set his sight on new challenges.

In 2014 Dave was nominated for the Domestic Athlete of the Year Award while his mount RR Dyranta won Domestic Horse of the year. With many wins and places on the World Cup circuit, two Australian senior titles and two NSW team titles in the past few years, Dave continues to set his sight on new challenges.

]]> Charlie Brister Buzzsprout-5597983 Fri, 25 Sep 2020 17:00:00 +1000 215 1 1 full false David Shoobridge David Shoobridge David Shoobridge is an elite Australian dressage rider, trainer and coach.  His experience competing at the top levels of Australian dressage and his reputation for successfully developing dressage horses and riders, coupled with his acute eye for detail and his highly articulate and charismatic style means that David is in high demand as a trainer and coach.
David grew up as part of a multi-generational farming and agriculture family in Tasmania.   While David and his young family are now based in Victoria, the Shoobridge family property, with its generations of history and sense of continuity is a place he treasures and returns to whenever possible.

David’s early riding experiences were on farm horses, learning by trial and error and not taking anything seriously.  He was known for riding anything that was even remotely rideable and this soon progressed to jumping anything that was remotely jumpable.  

Dressage was definitely not part of the plan at this stage.  Hunter trials, with the combination of show jumping and cross country and no dressage at all were David’s ideal event.  In fact, at this point, he simply couldn’t fathom how anyone could remember where to go in a Dressage test for a whole five minutes – or why they would even want to!

His first competition horse was well suited to this until David, at the age of 14 decided he needed some professional guidance and enrolled in his first clinic with a professional coach.  The horse, who had worked so well at home, simply refused to load onto the float.  

Displaying even then what would become known as his characteristic determination and tenacity, David rode 18km to the clinic followed all the way by his mother in the car towing the float.   Not surprisingly, part of that first clinic was a comprehensive lesson on float loading and David credits this experience as one of the biggest influences in his belief that respect between horse and rider starts on the ground.

David gravitated toward dressage as his specialist discipline, developing and campaigning a number of horses successfully until he hit the limelight with the imported stallion, OO Seven, in 2012.  Purchased from the horse’s breeder, Isabel Van Gisbergen, David’s first sight of OO Seven was when he picked him up from quarantine.  From this unconventional start, they went on to form one of the most successful partnerships in recent Australian dressage.

In 2012, David achieved FEI World Ranking Top 100; in 2013 his FEI world ranking climbed to number 85.  This placed him ahead of all other Australian based combinations and established him as the second most successful Australian rider worldwide at that time.

A highlight of David’s time with 00 Seven was achieved at Dressage with the Stars where they recorded one of the highest Grand Prix Freestyle scores in the history of the competition with a commanding 73.5%.

Deciding on a name was harder than you would think. We wanted something that was not discipline specific, bye bye Half Halt Podcast. In saying that someone will tell me they don’t use reins. Well I am sure they have used reins at some point and the idea is a for us to point them in the right direction when they do use them. If they haven't used reins at all then I would love for them to come on the show!

So who am I and why should you be listening. I have been riding horses all my life. I wasn’t a child prodigy, in fact I didn't even know if I was on the right rein until I was about 17 or so. Look at me now, writing for HorseVibes Magazine, riding horses all day and now the host of a fantastic podcast...
