In this short episode I walk through what a discovery call actually is — and what it isn’t. It’s not a sales pitch. It’s not a test you can fail. It’s not a free coaching session. And you won’t leave owing me anything.

What it is: a 30-minute real conversation. We figure out where you are, what might help, and whether we’re a match. It goes both ways — I’m figuring out if I can help you, and you’re figuring out if I’m the right person to do that.

I also talk about the question I always ask: are you in building mode or survival mode? And I explain the difference between coaching and therapy — including why there’s still space for real emotions in coaching, just not trauma work.

If you’re curious, that’s already enough reason to book. You don’t need a plan. You don’t need to prepare. Just show up.

I wanted to do an episode about Etsy and if it is worth starting your own website, when I went to Threads to do a callout for craft business that have ideas about this, I saw a post by a printmaker. #47- Janne de Hoop @ Hollands Wol Collectief on turning local wool into product

Before The Holland Wool Collective came along, tons of wool was going to waste. There was a gap between people who had wool, people who processed it into a usable product, and wholesalers or designers who needed the material.

Farmers in the Netherlands needed more options as far as who to send their wool to; there wasn’t anyone gathering that material to send it to be processed it into usable medium– like felt or yarn. At least, not until Janne de Hoop and her partner Mirthe Snoek came along.

Within a week of launching their website, they had received at least 30 calls from sheep farmers with wool to get rid of. Still in the early stages, Janne from the Hollands Wol Colletief gives us a sneak-peek into what goes on behind the scenes in this start-up cooperative that utilizes what, in the past, was going to waste. What a joy to have her with us!

We talk about taxes, balancing work life and personal life, launching a company with a friend, and figuring things out as you go.

I know what it feels like when you are a (starting) solo-preneur. So much uncertainty. So many questions. It can get pretty scary and it makes you stop in your tracks. While your mind is in overdrive, you are not moving forward.

Omdat we van transparant en eerlijk houden en omdat we niet bang zijn een andere mening te hebben startten we deze serie en noemden we het ‘hart op de tong’. Niet ge-edit rauw en eerlijk.

We zijn geen socioloog, bedrijfskundige, econoom of psycholoog dus ik gooi er even een disclaimer in, je luistert naar de gedachten en ideeën van twee hartstochtelijke makers, we zijn geen experts in alles waar we een mening over hebben. We hopen dat je ons geklets informatief en vermakelijk vind.

We praten dit keer over het verdwijnen van de wolwinkels. Waarom is het toch zo moeilijk om open te blijven. De laatste wolwinkel in centrum Rotterdam gaat ook dicht zag ik in november van vorig jaar. Ik sprak erover met Sophia en we zoeken samen uit, hoe zit dat toch?

Veel vermoedens tijdens het gesprek en weinig feiten dus pin ons niet teveel vast op onze gedachtenspinsels. ;-)

Oh m'gosh I had so much fun talking to Clara Parkes, our first conversation 'in sound' was awesome. Le Grand Dame of Wool has a way of talking about serious issues in such a fun way. This talk was recorded and shared with the Ja, Wol community in the late summer of 2021 but I'm so happy to share it with all of you now. We talk about trade offs, compromises we make as conscious knitters, how the industry is build and how we can keep it going and our heart's work; eating chips on you tube.

Mary Jane and myself have briefly met on several occasions when I travelled to Shetland for Shetland Wool Festival, a festival to celebrate the heritage of Shetland Wool and knitting. I was excited to really get some time to talk to her about exactly that, traveling for work, designing and teaching techniques like Fair Isle knitting and what it means to be a a non- Shetlander that is known for this specific technique. Inclusivity in knitting and our excitement to discover, research and then share what we've learned. Listen to a very lovely and knowledgeable, talented knitter that has a lot to share on stranded knitting and Fair Isle knitting in particular.

Jonna reacted on my Instagram stories about fair wages and prices for your work as a professional knitter. She was so specific about it that I needed to know more,I contacted her and as it turns out she's a professional in the field. It took me 2 seconds to invite her to be my guest on the podcast and l'm so glad she obliged.

Jonna advises visual artists on legal and business matters and knits in her spare time.

We had such an in-depth discussion about fair wages for self employed creatives. And fair and sustainable prices for handmade items. When do you call yourself a professional artist or crafter, is there a difference. How do you move from creating for fun to becoming a professional and what steps do you need to take.

What I loved about this conversation is that it's all in your hands. It's a mindset if nothing else. Some of the best artists are self educated.

"When you think it, if you have the right mindset, you can become it"

A Professional Artist is someone who makes autonomous work you don't necessarily need an art education.

Any artist is good enough and worthy enough of GOOD payment!

Everyone who sees theirselves as a professional artist can become a member in the union.
