Gifted and successful novelist, Archie Lovecraft, is overworked and over stressed. He drinks too much and feels enormous pressure to stay on top in the literary world. In addition, he hates technology and denounces it at every turn. His best friend and I.T. specialist, George, is desperately trying to bring Archie into the 21st century and rid him of his old- school ways. One Halloween afternoon, Julia, Archie's computer, has somehow come to life and starts verbally berating him. Will this talented writer be able to win this “war of words?”

She graduated from UC Berkeley, worked in mental hospitals and published articles about San Quentin State Prison ex-offenders, before she became a writer/director in film and TV. Shayne has written movies for Disney, Showtime, Imagine Entertainment, and directed for Nickelodeon,  Warner Bros, and Paramount. Shayne created a dramedy TV series for Quincy Jones, two animated series for Warner Bros, and a dramedy TV series to film in Thailand. She directed an award-winning documentary playing festivals and adapted a WW2 spy book for a Swiss producer. Recently, Shayne was hired to write/direct a rom-com movie.

Theater #183: Poetry on the Menu Poetry on the Menu

​​​ In January 1967, writer/participatory journalist George Plimpton dreamed up a publicity stunt for heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali. He arranged for him to meet Marianne Moore, decorated American poetess – a showman who creates doggerel rhymes, together with one of the finest true poets in the history of the English language. The pair couldn’t be more opposite – He a gigantic, athletic man of color, at his physicalpeak, age 25, not formally educated, a Muslim, loud, charismatic, a showman with the burgeoning edge for social causes and advocacy; She, elderly, age 80, pasty white, doggedly Presbyterian, incredibly well educated, shy, frail and a kind of dowager spinster. Ali’s poems, so called, which predicted his fights, were little more than expanded limericks. Moore’s balletic verses and images won her the Pulitzer Prize, the National Medal in Literature and almost the Nobel Prize. Theirhost that day, Toots Shor, was a rough New York man of Jewish descent, who rubbed elbows, hosted, drank with, and incurred the wrath of entertainment giants of the first two-thirds of the 20th Century: Frank Sinatra, Charlie Chaplin, Ernest Hemingway, Joe DiMaggio, Marilyn Monroe, etc. The meeting only lasted a few minutes and produced a short poem, “On the annihilation of Ernie Terrell,” Ali’s next title foe. The playwright has expanded the meeting in a deeper way, as a one-act play, using snippets of

Moore’s poetry to frame the time, Ali’s immediate and lasting appeal through his pithy quotes uttered over two decades, and foreshadowing his thoughtful future self.

For reasons he can't explain, Stephen feels compelled to enter a sketchy-looking tattoo parlor that any reasonable person would avoid altogether. Once inside, he encounters a peculiar old woman, who Stephen enlists to become the artist of his baptismal ink job. At the first prick of the needle, Stephen decides to make a move for the door, but the old woman bars his way with a terrifying
plan in store.

In 2064, Bruce Koinstra, an 85-year-old history professor, passes away in a moon colony senior housing complex. Following his memorial service, his husband of thirty years, Kirby, along with his forty-year old daughter Septima; and teen grandson Plurial gather at Bruce's Midwest Victorian home. They await the reading of Bruce's will and the demolition crew scheduled to raze the house. Reflecting on Bruce's life, they discuss the era when LGBT rights were restricted by archaic laws and when racial discrimination was widespread.

Buttercup is a detective in the big city. A woman has been abandoned by her husband, who has absconded with their funds. All the woman has left is a statue of a duck. She’s hiring Buttercup to locate her husband (and her money). But Buttercup is finding that the duck comes with strings attached.

All ladies are visiting in Bill’s hospital room when a catastrophic “event” occurs to cause the women to jump back into action and put on their heroine costumes one more time. Curt Strickland is a  playwright who recently received a masters degree in playwriting from Lesley University’s graduate program. Inspired by August Wilson, Curt is finishing up his 5th play in a ten play opus on American, each play set in a different decade. Curt believes that Art should serve to heal, inspire, provoke, challenge and to offer hope – but most of all to connect, to remind us of our common humanity. 

Curt recently was awarded the William Faulkner Literary playwriting prize for his full length play, 1968, and Curt just published his book: Democracy Under Siege: (Essays on the Trump Years, 2017-2024).

In 2020, Curt received a double lung transplant, an event that had profound effects on both his writing and his life. This experience is the basis of a new play he is developing entitled Double Lung.

John Leslie is the playwright. He is a Los Angeles-based actor and writer.  His
acting credits include 19 seasons as the corrupt Senator Alfred Winston in Theater Forty's production of The Manor at Greystone Mansion. His last appearance was in The Explorer's Club, also with Theater Forty. As a writer, he adapted Bram Stoker's Dracula's Guest for Wicked Lit. His short story Trick was recently published in the anthology Ghosts, Echoes, and Shadows. He combined acting and writing for The Soft Click and Other Stories, his one-man show about his years as a substitute teacher.

October 31 is, of course, Halloween, and Brody and the Dark and Stormy Night is
certainly appropriate for the season.

Brody has recently had his heart broken. He goes to a Halloween party and sees his ex with a new boyfriend. Brody steps onto a balcony where he is ultimately joined by a stranger who takes an interest in him. Perhaps Brody’s luck is about to change. However, it is Halloween…, Miranda Stewart directs Matthew Scott Montgomery as Brody and David Andrew Calvillo as the Stranger.

Montgomery is also the playwright. His previous plays include Dead Boys and
Foursome. He is known nationally for his work as an actor on the Disney Channel series So Random! He appeared in the recent Open-Door Playhouse production of He/She/Us. He previously received an acting award from Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle.

October is, of course, the month of Halloween, and Monsters Anonymous is certainly appropriate for the season.

Dracula wants to be a better monster and feels guilty for his past killings. Determined to stop, he struggles with his addiction to human blood, despite being able to survive on animal blood. He joins Monsters Anonymous (MA), posing as an alcoholic, and meets other monsters with unique addictions: Gaywolf, obsessed with bulking up; Frankenstein, addicted to plastic surgery; and Ghost Girl, who can't stop stalking her ex-girlfriend. Can the group help Dracula resist his urges, or will he relapse into killing again?

Melissa Marie Watson is the playwright. Melissa won two creative writing scholarship contests and two essay contests at Eureka College, read poetry over the radio in Chicago, and was published in The Quill, The Pantagraph, and The Woodford County Journal. She was recently published in two anthology books: Words of the Wise: Stories of Awakening Journeys and I’m a F*cking Entrepreneur Volume II. Her monologue, Made to Be Alone, was performed by Nomad Theatre in their Ghostlight Project showcase, and her short play, The Lesser of Two Evils was a finalist in Nomad's The Polling Place contest.

She begs entry at one house and finds refuge for the moment as a schoolmate and his grandfather take her in. But the night is still young, and dawn is hours away. Will Suzy be safe, or will unimaginable terrors lie in wait for her?

Yunyi Zhu directs Daamen Krall, JayCee Porter, and Michael Harvey Fletcher.

Fletcher is also the playwright. He holds a BFA in Creative Writing from Utah Valley
University. A prolific character actor on stage and screen, he recently appeared in the Open-Door Playhouse production of A Skylight in Queens.

Set in 1863, just after the Emancipation Proclamation, Chess Master tells the story of a confrontation between a defiant plantation owner and a newly freed slave. The owner, desperately clinging to the old order, attempts to coerce his former servant into staying on as an unpaid laborer---a potent allegory for the continuing struggle to create a truly free society.

The cast includes Tim Powell, Tazz Yancey, and Dennis Gersten.. Gersten directs.

Braddon Mendelson is the playwright. His full-length plays include Provenance,
Gallows Falls, Rembrandt Perfected, Resisted Living, and Minor Character. He wrote the book and lyrics for a musical, The Waterway. He is the author and illustrator of a children’s book, Have You Seen the Tickle Bug? Mendelson also produced music videos for rap and R& B artists. He is a graduate of Cal State Northridge.

Astrid meets Paolo for the first time in almost a year after breaking up.
He has convinced her to meet his “new self” at a men’s clothing store. When he makes his reveal, she has difficulty adjusting to what he now looks like. The ghost of his former self arrives, and both react intermittently.

 In the chilly streets of New York, a disillusioned young man is troubled by his recent work as a death doula, prompting him to ponder life's deeper questions. One night, he encounters Chloe, who appears to be on the brink of personal turmoil. Observing her spiral into alcoholism, Ben intervenes and brings her to his apartment. What starts as a promising evening of connection soon unravels into a soul-searching exploration of their own vulnerabilities. As they navigate their existential crises, questions arise: can they confront their isolation and find solace, or will they succumb further to their inner chaos?

An older gentleman invites a younger man to his apartment for dinner. As the meal
progresses the two discuss the difficulties that each generation has delt with over the years; each contending that their generations has endured the harshest difficulties. As the conversation between the two fades, they acknowledge their similarities and the evening takes on a more personal tone.

In the late 1960s, Grace has become a teen mom at 16. Her daughter has been taken away from her, against her will. Her boyfriend, the little girl’s father, has been killed on the battlefield while serving in Vietnam. Now, Grace is determined to do whatever is necessary to get her daughter back. First, Grace will have a reckoning with her own mother.

In 2014, Flint, Michigan changed the source of its water supply. This resulted in the
contamination of its drinking and bathing water, causing a dozen fatalities and sickening dozens more. The changes in the water supply were motivated by the greed of a few people in power and by systemic racism: The city was 54% Black.

The Johnson men are home for Thanksgiving. Louis is a Vietnam veteran. Paul, his son,
is a Desert Storm veteran. Jared, Paul’s son, is currently in the Air Force, on leave after extended deployment. Louis is still haunted by his days in combat in the Nam. He’s been harboring a terrible secret, which will soon be revealed.

Dan Lambert is a playwright and veteran. Daniel has been in the theatre world for over seven years, first as an actor, then as a playwright and director. He founded Troupe Of Dysfunction, a theatre group that aims to improve mental health through creative expression. The Final Battle was written to recognize the struggles of incarcerated veterans.

The Wars at Home.

Cairo (pronounced KAY-row) is the name of an Illinois town just across the state line
from Paducah, Kentucky where Dan, the proprietor of a business called Dan’s Demolition, is seeing a bank executive about a loan to bolster his business. In the course of his conversation with the banker, Dan relates details about the military records of his father, himself, and his son. Dan, an expert at demolition, seeks to rebuild his life.

Bernadette Armstrong directs. Playwright J.A. Moad II performs his own script.

J.A. Moad II is a former Air Force C-130 pilot with over a hundred combat sorties. He
received an MFA from Augsburg College. He has written fiction, poetry, and essays. He is also an actor and an airline pilot. He resides in Northfield, Minnesota.

Kim Hlavac is the playwright. The recipient of a BFA from f SUNY Purchase, she is also
an actor. Suffering from PTSD, Willy continues to struggle in his day-to-day life, haunted by the
psychological trauma he suffered while serving in Vietnam, and the subsequent divorce from the love of his life, and separation from his daughter, whom he adores.

Jan Buttram is the playwright. She is a member of the Dramatists Guild and is the

Before women could even vote, Miss Banker leads the first corps of women that help turn the tide of World War I.

This is an interview with the first woman soldier Chief Grace Banker of the Signal Corps
Female Telephone Operators Unit. General John Pershing, commander of the American
Expeditionary Forces in WWI, demanded female “wire experts” when he discovered that inexperienced doughboys were unable to keep him connected with troops under fire.

In 1918 the US Army Signal Corps sent 223 women to France during WWI. They were
bi-lingual and experts in the latest technology, the switchboard. They had access to privileged coordinates and military assignments. These brave women chose to serve their country despite the fact that women were not considered full citizens. Back in the states, they could not vote, nor own property, but a group of six women led by Miss. Banker served alongside Gen Pershing on the front line as they operated the switchboards. They were responsible for over 26 million calls during their service.

The SAG-AFTRA /WGA strikes have hurt thousands of actors, writers, composers, recording engineers, editors, and crew. Creatives in our entertainment community cannot pay rent, buy food, or keep health insurance.

Rock and Roll Radio Theatre, has partnered with Nonprofit Open-Door Playhouse to produce a radio play series, sanctioned by SAG-AFTRA, that does not cross the picket line. We have hired those actors, writers, composers, recording engineers, editors, and crew-- all of whom have spent years perfecting their craft, and who want to be able to do it again for a fair wage. 

As of November, the strike is nearing 200 days. Even when the strike is over, the recovery process will continue. Our SAG-AFTRA Micropodcast Contract can put some money in pockets of creatives while they do what they were trained to do.

SHURE INCORPORATED -- the gold standard for audio equipment for artists and venues worldwide, contributed $10,000 worth of microphones, and Fred's 62 of Los Feliz and Sharky's of Studio City donated meals. Still, the majority of the funding came from private donors -- like you!

Army recruit Carrie surprises her mother and sister when she arrives home on an emergency leave from her platoon, days before being shipped out to her new assignment.

Emergency Leave!  is directed by Joanee McGee-Lamb and stars Sofia Bragar, Marta Portillo, Violeta Hernandez.

Elaine Little is the playwright. She is a combat veteran who served as an interrogator in Afghanistan. Emergency Leave has been performed in London. Elaine has also written for the TV miniseries So Proudly We Hailed. She received her M.A. from the University of Illinois, Chicago. She works as an outreach coordinator for homeless veterans at the VA Los Angeles Regional Office.

It's 1536. Anne Boleyn, Queen of England, has been charged with capital crimes and is confined in a cell at the Tower of London. She finds herself, to her distaste, having a peasant as a cellmate and that's not all; To everyone's surprise, there's a dead Warder sharing the cell with them. What might the presence of this corpse portend for the cell's other two occupants? Anne has a plan.

Detective Harry and his Assistant Jack and a coroner all called are called to the scene to solve her murder: unknowingly each of them have a connection to the recently deceased.
