Brad Willey, now executive director of Mission Eurasia Canada, talks about how he came to faith. Willey grew up in a rough, isolated mountain town in western Canada where fighting, drinking, and gang influence were part of daily life. Around 2001–2002, he was operating heavy equipment when a landslide pushed his machine 30 feet underwater. He cried out to God, escaped through the roof hatch, and survived. He attended church for six months afterward but felt spiritually lost and drifted back into old habits. Years later, on a December morning, he prayed for someone to explain God's message to him. That afternoon, at a Calgary truck stop, a stranger with a Polish accent told him about Jesus, and Willey committed his life to Christ. He then grew in faith through Christian radio and a men's discipleship group, and was baptized in 2008. After a 2019 mission trip to Chile, he moved into full-time ministry, which led to his current work supporting field teams in Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Mongolia.

Jermaine Wilson, now mission ambassador for Prison Fellowship, describes growing up in government housing with a teenage mother and a father who struggled with addiction. He began using drugs at 11 and committed his first crime at 12, seeking the acceptance he lacked at home. He spent four years in juvenile corrections, where he joined a gang, and after release he returned to drugs and crime. That led to a three-year adult prison sentence for narcotics possession, served when his son was eight months old. During that sentence, facing the prospect of his son repeating his path and with family visits suddenly stopping, he joined Prison Fellowship's program, surrendered his life to Jesus, and saw his family restored. After release, the church and Prison Fellowship volunteers gave him and his family food, housing, and jobs. He had his record expunged and later served as mayor of Leavenworth, Kansas. He now shares his story with inmates and lawmakers and urges listeners to volunteer with Prison Fellowship, especially its Angel Tree program, and to extend grace to people who have been incarcerated.

Edward Bouvier, "The Village Woodwright," started in furniture restoration and moved into teaching after a health crisis in his 30s showed him he wanted his craft to reach people. He now runs classes, mostly for homeschool groups and private schools, in which every tool is hand-powered and students start by splitting a fresh log. They work without rulers or patterns, using classical proportions instead. Bouvier ties his work to his faith, especially the idea of redemption: rescuing discarded wood and furniture, and helping students salvage flawed pieces or burn the rest in the class campfire. He also mentions a former apprentice who is now a blacksmith at Kline Creek Farm, and his lifelong love of the pipe organ, which he is returning to after advice from Wheaton's Harold Best to use music for worship rather than performance. He describes his path as a calling that has taken detours, and says that although mission work rarely pays well, God has always provided and interest in his classes is now growing.

On July 3, 1980, Cheryl Steele Tinsley and three of her friends were caught in a deadly “freak storm” on Michigan's Lake Huron that meteorologists say only appear once every ten to twelve years.  Her three companions died, but Cheryl miraculously lived.

Jeremy Farley, a pastor from Wytheville, Virginia, and author of the memoir Hay Balers and Holy Rollers. Farley was born to a teenage mother in 1985 after she rejected pressure to have an abortion, and he grew up on his great-grandfather's Virginia farm after being raised partly in West Virginia coal country. His great-grandfather, "the Old Man" (Tom Farley), was a hard, self-made, "black-and-white" man who taught him toughness but dismissed church as being "for weak men." Jeremy had a false conversion as a teen under social pressure at a legalistic Christian school, then genuinely surrendered to Christ in college on October 15, 2004. He describes founding Restoration Church of Wytheville in 2019, which weathered pandemic setbacks (meeting in a cow pasture) before growing into a two-service congregation. The interview's emotional centerpiece is his 2014 hospital-bedside conversation with his dying great-grandfather, where he shared the "Romans Road" gospel passages and learned the old man's own mother had shared the same verses with him as a child before she died — leading the great-grandfather to profess faith in Christ shortly before his death.

Adam Waters shares a powerful testimony of transformation from atheism, rebellion, drug addiction, broken relationships, and imprisonment to faith in Jesus Christ and pastoral ministry. Raised in the Chicago suburbs, Waters rejected Christianity as a teenager and became deeply involved in drugs and alcohol, eventually serving in the military as a highly trained medical corpsman while secretly struggling with addiction. After reaching a desperate point that led him to consider suicide, he confessed his addiction, was discharged, and eventually returned to Chicago, where his addiction worsened and ultimately resulted in prison. While incarcerated, reading the writings of Martin Luther, Calvin, Augustine, and other theologians opened his eyes to his spiritual brokenness, and he experienced a profound conversion to Christianity. After prison, with the support of his parents, mentors, and his wife Elaine, Waters pursued theological education at Moody, sensed a call to ministry, and eventually became lead pastor of Grace Bible Church in Elmhurst, Illinois. Today, he views his suffering and recovery as preparation to speak truth and hope into the lives of others, emphasizing the power of prayer, God's ability to redeem broken lives, and the truth that even the most unlikely people can be transformed and called to serve Him.

Rob shares his life story: being born in England to a Canadian father and English mother, growing up in a Christian home in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, and giving his life to Christ as a boy, though it didn't feel "real" until a devastating 1951 car accident that killed a friend and left him in a coma — an event he credits with truly turning his heart toward God and keeping him out of military service in Korea. He recounts starting his concrete business in the early 1950s after a mentor set him up with clients, building it into one of the largest concrete contractors in the Chicago area (still family-run 70+ years later), and using his business as a platform for quiet, consistent Christian witness — praying before meals with coworkers, sharing his testimony at industry events, and mentoring golfing buddies over the years. Steve DeWitt, longtime pastor of Bethel Church in Northwest Indiana, talks about his book Loneliness: Don't Hate It or Waste It, Redeem It. DeWitt shares that he was a well-known "never married" megachurch pastor for over two decades before marrying his wife Jennifer (they connected after she read an article he'd written on loneliness), and he draws on that long stretch of singleness to reflect on loneliness biblically rather than as a book about marriage curing it. He distinguishes aloneness (neutral), loneliness (bad), and solitude (good), and outlines three ways people "waste" their loneliness — isolating themselves, becoming obsessed with unmet expectations, and distracting themselves through things like binge-watching or doomscrolling. He then turns to how to "redeem" loneliness: recognizing it as fundamentally a vertical longing for restored relationship with God (echoing Augustine and Chesterton), and then letting that drive people toward sacrificial, others-focused love modeled on Jesus rather than self-focused pursuit of companionship. The Table Ministries is located in Bristol, VA.  Zach shares his journey from starting drug use at age 13, through years of addiction, incarceration, and homelessness, to a dramatic conversion to Christianity that he experienced in a jail cell. He describes founding The Table Ministries as a non-traditional, raw and welcoming church born out of his seminary internship, one that meets people where they are — in homeless shelters, jails, and recovery centers — rather than expecting them to come to a traditional church setting. Much of the conversation focuses on his theology of recovery: the idea that it's not enough to get people "out of Egypt," but that God must also get "Egypt out of them," and that shame (not just guilt) is one of the biggest barriers people in recovery face. He describes the ministry's practices, including a weekly communion gathering at a Boys & Girls Club, "friendraising" instead of fundraising, and a discipleship model aimed at helping men move from being "takers" to "contributors" — becoming fathers, entrepreneurs, and church planters. He closes with a story about a formerly homeless man named Shane who was eventually reunited with his sons in Idaho, using it as an example of restoration beyond mere sobriety.

In 1997, Donita Travis—then president of a Chicago advertising agency she'd co-founded with her husband—felt called by God during a prayer retreat to help kids in Chicago live an "abundant life" (John 10:10). She spent the next three years volunteering with kids from the Cabrini-Green housing projects at Moody Church while still running her agency, before leaving the business in 2000, with her husband's blessing, to found By the Hand Club, a Christ-centered after-school program. Starting with just 16 kids in a single room in March 2001, the program has grown to serve 1,800 kids (7,000 total over the years) from kindergarten through college across six clubs in four under-resourced Chicago neighborhoods, partnering with Chicago Public Schools to reach children most at risk of dropping out and caring for them holistically in mind, body, and soul. The results have been striking: a 100% high school graduation rate, 76% of graduates continuing to higher education or the military, 60% on the honor roll, over 80% growing at least a year in reading level, and 87% professing a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Running on a $17 million annual budget (which includes $1 million just for busing), the organization has finished fully funded for 23 straight years and holds a four-star Charity Navigator rating. Travis closes the interview with the story of Shacola, a student removed from her home with six siblings as a first grader and raised by her aunt, Miss Alma (now a By the Hand staff member)—Shacola is now a ninth grader reading at a 12th-grade level, on full scholarship at Culver Academy, with her younger sister following in her footsteps with a scholarship of her own.

Wayne Shepherd talks with Bill Hendricks—Executive Director for Christian Leadership at the Hendricks Center at Dallas Theological Seminary and President of the Giftedness Center, and son of the late Howard Hendricks. Bill describes taking over his father's leadership center in 2014, and his decades-long work at the Giftedness Center helping people (over 2,000 to date) discover their God-given "giftedness"—the innate design that shapes their calling. He shares his own faith story, from a childhood conversion at age four and a half after hearing the Passion story on a record, to a pivotal career-assessment session at age 30 that clarified his own gifts. Much of the conversation explores why people struggle to see their own giftedness (since we can't step outside ourselves), how storytelling and lived experience—rather than psychometric tests—reveal a person's distinctive pattern of gifting, and how Bill sees giftedness as "incarnational truth": a reflection of God's own image expressed uniquely through each person. Dustin grew up in the Chicago suburbs in a broken, substance-abusing family, with his only Christian influence being his grandmother. By age 15 he was a full-blown heroin addict, eventually dropping out of school, cycling through theft, drug charges, and jail. At around age 20, while in the suicide ward of a jail going through heroin withdrawals, he cried out to Jesus — a faith rooted in his grandmother's persistent witness. After years of struggling without discipleship or community, his father gave him an ultimatum at age 22, leading Dustin to a two-year gospel-centered recovery program at a rescue mission in Peoria, Illinois. It was there — through men who opened the Bible with him and required him to memorize Scripture — that his life truly transformed. Against all odds, he went on to attend Bible college in Kansas City, and today, at 42, he has been walking with the Lord for about 20 years. He works in Christian healthcare ministry, serves as a worship leader at his church, and is a husband and father of two.

Ben Olsen shares how he grew up in a faith-filled home centered on community and participation, placed his faith in Christ at age 10, but drifted away during his teens. He pursued acting professionally for about 16 years — including six years in New York doing primarily Shakespeare — before a defining moment where he felt God calling him to make a clear choice. After returning to his faith, he found his theater background being redeemed when a Christian school invited him to teach theater.
Over the following 25+ years, Ben worked in various "helps professions" — addictions recovery, wilderness therapy, and pastoral counseling — before enrolling at Western Seminary. There, a coaching class instantly clarified what he had been doing all along. He pivoted fully to coaching, eventually took over the seminary's coaching program, and has since spun it off as the independent Global Center for Coaching. The organization offers accredited online training for both those seeking a professional coaching credential and those who simply want to sharpen their relational skills. Ben emphasizes that, unlike counseling, coaching is forward-focused and treats the client as the expert of their own life, with the coach's role being to help people discover what God has already placed within them.

Luke Cheng is the Executive Director of Chinese Ministries at the Far East Broadcasting Company (FEBC). Born in a small village in China as the youngest of six children, he grew up with no exposure to Christianity and dreamed of becoming a scientist. His faith journey began when he moved to Canada for graduate school and was invited to a Chinese student Bible study group — the first time he had ever met Christians.

After becoming a believer, Luke prayed fervently for his family's salvation. Over the years, his sister, mother, and father all came to faith — his father just days before passing away, and his mother during a three-month visit to the United States.

Luke met his wife Joy at that same Bible study group, where she was a seminary student leading the sessions. Both eventually studied at Dallas Theological Seminary, Joy for a Doctor of Ministry and Luke for a theology degree, after he spent nearly 10 years working as a software engineer at Microsoft and Amazon.

Although Luke described himself as an introvert who feared public speaking and doubted how God could use him in ministry, he had made a private commitment to full-time ministry early in his Christian life — promising God that if his parents were saved, he would serve however called. That calling took about a decade to fully materialize before he left his tech career for FEBC.

At FEBC, Luke sees technology as central to the mission. FEBC was founded in 1945 to reach Chinese people through radio, but has since shifted to internet, social media, and mobile platforms. He has embraced AI as a powerful new ministry tool — using it for content conversion, chatbot development, and app creation — and is now pursuing a second PhD at Cambridge University to explore the theological and ethical dimensions of AI in ministry.

Jonathan Hallsted is the founder and executive director of Health Bridge Global, a ministry that uses healthcare as a vehicle for sharing the gospel in closed nations, cultures, and communities. His path to this calling was anything but linear — he spent time in pastoral ministry, served seven years as a missionary in Eastern Europe, and built a 15-year career managing medical practices in California. Shawn Thornton shares the deeply personal story behind his memoir All But Normal: Life on Victory Road. His mother suffered a severe traumatic brain injury in a car accident at age 14, and without adequate therapy available in 1962, she spent the rest of her life struggling with physical limitations, emotional instability, and periodic institutionalization. Growing up in this environment of "private pain" gave Thornton a lifelong heart for disability ministry — though he kept his story private for many years, believing it didn't matter.
The conversation reveals a remarkable full-circle moment: Joni Eareckson Tada had been a source of hope and strength for Thornton's mother throughout her struggles. When Thornton arrived at his new pastoral position in California, he discovered a welcome note on his desk signed by Joni and Ken Tada — completely unaware of his family connection. That encounter moved him to tears, and eventually led him to share his story publicly, first at a Joni and Friends donor event, and later in his book — encouraged by both Joni and author Max Lucado.
Now one year into his role leading Joni and Friends, Thornton is energized by the organization's mission to equip and mobilize local churches worldwide to welcome people with disabilities. He notes that only about 10% of U.S. churches are fully accessible, and that embracing disability ministry tends to open a congregation's heart to other marginalized groups as well. He describes the "Wheels for the World" program, which restores used wheelchairs in U.S. prisons and ships them to remote communities in countries like Thailand and Ghana, where recipients also receive Bibles, the gospel message, and a connection to a local church — often breaking longstanding cultural superstitions about disability. The interview closes with Thornton expressing deep enthusiasm for his new calling.

Born and raised in Mongolia under Soviet-era communist rule, Batjargal Tuvshintsengel first heard the gospel at age 20 through a British missionary who taught English using the Bible — a transformative moment that set him on a lifelong path of Christian ministry. He witnessed the remarkable birth of the church in Mongolia following the fall of communism, when the country suddenly opened to missionaries and the gospel for the first time in generations. Drawn to media from childhood, Batjargal channeled that background into ministry, helping launch Mongolia's first Christian FM radio station in Ulaanbaatar in 2001, which grew into a network of 17 stations reaching nomadic populations across the country via satellite. He credits this media ministry with supporting the growth of an estimated 650–700 churches and roughly 90,000 Christians in Mongolia. Now living back in Mongolia, Batjargal's vision for the future centers on equipping younger generations — particularly Gen Z — to become digital media evangelists, and on partnering media ministry with local churches to strengthen discipleship in an age increasingly shaped by AI and social media.

Background & Early Life as a Muslim Apologist
Abdu Murray grew up in a devout Shiite Muslim home in the metro Detroit area. Far from being a nominal believer, he took his faith seriously and actively challenged Christians and people of other faiths, pressing them to articulate why they believed what they did. He found that most Christians he encountered couldn't explain their faith beyond tradition or habit, and he used this to try to draw them toward Islam.
A Turning Point in the Bible
Ironically, while attempting to find contradictions in the Bible to use against two Baptist men who kept visiting his apartment, Abdu stumbled upon John the Baptist's words in Luke 3 — warning people not to rely on tradition or lineage for salvation. The passage struck him because it echoed the very argument he had been making to Christians, and it forced him to ask himself the same question: why did he believe what he believed?
Nine Years of Searching
That encounter launched a years-long intellectual and spiritual journey. It took Abdu two years of studying the historical, philosophical, and theological foundations of various worldviews to reach the intellectual conclusion that Christianity was true. However, he wrestled with actually accepting that conclusion for seven more years, held back by the personal, cultural, and familial cost of leaving Islam — as well as the deep identity he had wrapped up in being Muslim.
The Resurrection as the Pivotal Issue
The bodily resurrection of Jesus became the crux of his investigation. The Quran explicitly denies the crucifixion and resurrection, making it a direct point of collision between Islam and Christianity. Abdu researched the historical evidence extensively — including the accounts of eyewitnesses, early church figures like Polycarp and Clement of Rome, and the conversion of the skeptic Paul — and found the case increasingly compelling and uncomfortable to deny.
Legal Training and Coming to Faith
His legal education proved formative in evaluating the evidence, teaching him to assess argumentation and distinguish credible evidence from superficially convincing claims. He became a Christian shortly after finishing law school, concluding that the eyewitness testimony in the New Testament would stand up to scrutiny in a court of law.
Advice on Apologetics and Faith
Abdu now runs a ministry called Embrace the Truth and encourages Christians to ask themselves daily why they believe. He argues that apologetics isn't just academic debate, but a tool for deepening one's own discipleship — likening it to a trained musician who experiences a symphony far more richly than a casual listener. He closes with the conviction that because of what Christ has done in history, believers can trust what God will do in their lives.

Anita Deyneka is a longtime missionary, author, and advocate for vulnerable children, whose life and ministry have spanned the Soviet era, the collapse of communism, and the current crisis in Ukraine. Raised in Washington State and called to Christ at age 11, Anita later married missionary Peter Deyneka Jr., joining the influential Slavic Gospel Association founded by his father. Together they supported Christian radio broadcasts, distributed Bibles, and worked closely with persecuted believers across Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union—efforts that sometimes resulted in denied visas due to their advocacy writings.

After communism fell, Anita played a major role in expanding ministry opportunities, including leadership of Peter Deyneka Russian Ministries (now Mission Eurasia) and development of programs for emerging Christian leaders. Her deepest long-term focus, however, has been orphan care. Inspired by Ukrainian believers after the Soviet collapse, she helped encourage national movements such as Ukraine Without Orphans, Russia Without Orphans, and eventually the global coalition World Without Orphans, now active in over 90 countries.

Today, Anita’s central concern is the plight of Ukrainian children affected by Russia’s 2022 invasion, including the forcible abduction of more than 20,000 children into Russia and Russian-controlled territories, where they are separated from families, indoctrinated, or even forced into military service. She urges prayer, awareness, and support for bipartisan U.S. legislation aimed at ensuring the safe return of these children and upholding family unity.

This conversation reflects Anita’s lifelong commitment to bringing the hope of Christ to vulnerable communities and championing the well-being and protection of children in crisis.

Years ago an unpublished Wiersbe manuscript tucked in a dusty manila folder was unearthed by the Jacobsen family. A workplace mass shooting caused a crisis in Wayne's life and he gave his life to Christ after years of inner struggle. Today, he is the founder of a workplace ministry called Work In the Light, helping people see their work as a God-honoring calling to serve Him and others. Dr. Mark Jobe serves as Moody Bible Institute's 10th president, taking office on Jan. 2, 2019. He and his wife, Dee, have been married 32 years and have three adult children, Marissa, Josiah, and Grant. The Jobes currently reside in Chicagoland area where they are active members of New Life Community Church, a nondenominational, multisite church where Dr. Jobe has served as senior pastor since 1986.

Karl “KJ” Johnson, Lt.Col., USMC (Ret.) is the Director of the C.S. Lewis Institute in Chicago and oversees programs that foster the discipleship of heart and mind. He’s a C.S. Lewis Fellow with a Masters in Military Studies (Marine Corps University) and two Masters of Arts from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (Philosophy of Religion and Systematic Theology). Using family scrapbooks and unpublished sources, Andrew has taken a fresh look at the story of the Stam's death in 1934 when they were executed by Communist Chinese soldiers. Their story captured the world's attention in 1934 and still holds meaningful lessons for us today.

Shortly before his death, John Stam wrote a letter to mission authorities and wrote, "May God be glorified whether by life or by death" (Philippians 1:20).
