He remained in Berlin until 1933, when he emigrated to America for political reasons and accepted a position as Professor of Theoretical Physics at Princeton.

The Hannibal Commercial Club (forerunner to the Chamber of Commerce) started a fund drive to save the house. Mr. George Mahan stepped forward, purchased the house, fixed it up, and gave it to the City of Hannibal on May 15, 1912. For several years, a caretaker lived in most of the rooms and showed the parlor to the public.

1935, the Mark Twain Centennial celebration included a museum in the lobby of the B&L Building, at Fourth and Broadway. The museum was popular and led to the erection of the stone museum adjacent to the Boyhood Home. This museum included living quarters above the museum, so the caretaker moved out of the Boyhood Home. The remaining rooms of the home were then opened to the public.

The metal viewing platform was installed over the winter of 1984-1985 in preparation for the Mark Twain Sesquicentennial. A full restoration of the Boyhood Home occurred in 1990-1991. This included rebuilding two rooms at the rear that had been removed in about 1885.

The Boyhood Home has been open to the public since 1912, making it one of the earliest historic preservations in the country. It is on the National Register of Historic Buildings and is designated as a National Historic Landmark.

20,000 endangered animals were shot by trophy hunters last year. The total figure is closer to 100,000 animals if you include unprotected species. And this number does not count animals shot by people in their own country.

Safari Club International (SCI) is the world’s largest trophy hunting group. In the past few years, it has handed out 20,000 prizes to members who have shot lots of animals. They include hundreds of winners of its Hunting Achievement Award who each killed over 125 different animals.

SCI keeps a Record Book of the biggest animals killed by its members. There are 200,000 entries. You can buy hunting holidays on the internet to shoot any animal on the planet. If you fancy ‘big game’ hunting in Africa, there are lions, elephants, rhinos, and hippos. If you prefer ‘plains game,’ then you can choose a giraffe, zebra, leopard or even a cheetah.

If North America is where you would like to go, you can shoot polar bears and moose. Or pumas and capybara in South America. Some people enjoy flying ‘down under.’ Why not shoot camels and wallabies while you are there? The US has ranches where you can shoot zebras, kangaroos, and animals that have been hunted to extinction in the wild. There are beavers, reindeer, and seals for sale in Europe. Asian wild goats and sheep. If you go to Texas, you can even shoot wild pigs from a helicopter ... using a machine gun. Some go with their loved ones. There are father and son breaks, mother and daughter shooting trips. Fancy using a bow and arrow? There are bowhunting-only estates. And companies that specialize in shooting animals with revolvers. Many hunting companies advertise on the internet. Try googling ‘polar bear outfitter.’ Or ‘lion hunting safari.’ Or just ‘sheep hunting.’

The estimates of ROI in this report improve on existing estimates of ROI in several ways. He calculates ROI at the program level, meaning he can report results for individual majors at each college rather than the college overall. He also crafts estimate of earnings throughout students’ careers, instead of focusing merely on the first few years after graduation. The methodology also provides more accurate estimates of the increase in earnings attributable to each degree by adjusting for demographics, socioeconomic status, academic ability, and local labor markets.
