Fresh Step Laundry was founded by Wade Milyard in the summer of 2024. The inspiration for this initiative came from his experiences meeting unhoused individuals in Frederick during his time working as a police officer. 

He observed firsthand how essential having clean clothes was for their dignity and well-being. Recognizing this critical need, he decided to create a service that offers free laundry services for people facing homelessness. 

After his retirement in January of 2025, Wade began the process of designing and building a mobile laundry vehicle that could conveniently meet individuals wherever they were. Following the completion of the vehicle’s upfitting and necessary preparations, Fresh Step Laundry officially began serving the community on September 4th, 2025.

In this episode Carol and Jen discuss prayer. In an Overcomer's life there are certain tools that they have used in overcoming whatever obstacles were in their way. Jay was a mom trying to make ends meet while battling addiction. Every time Jay took a step forward it felt like two steps back until she ended up living in the back of her truck with her children. It took the perseverance of a woman who knew what it was like to be on the streets to help Jay find the resources she needed.  This is a story we hear all too often, but this one has a happy ending!

Betty's life started off rocky, with her dad disappearing out of her life at a young age because of his conviction as a sex offender. Carol shares her story of tragedy and triumph in this episode.

Stephanie was a teen mom at 16 and a widow at 35, now she is the mother of a goat rodeo, grandma to two and the Delta Area Director of YoungLife.

Talking to him today, you wouldn't know he came through major heartaches as a child and began a devastating addiction in his early teens which led him in and out of jail for over 12 years, his last time was spent within the walls of the notorious San Quentin prison.

Dr. Brooke Keels holds a master’s degree in Counseling Psychology and a Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy with over 15 years of direct counseling, academic, and administrative experience. Dr. Keels specializes in program design and counselor training/supervision and currently serves as the Clinical Director at Lighthouse Recovery TX, providing oversight for the standard of care across the PHP, IOP, SOP, and therapeutic programs.

She is highly educated, has loads of experience working with people suffering from addictions, loves Jesus and she is feisty and funny!! This episode is one we know you will enjoy and learn a lot from. a

From domestic violence to designer, Deja shares her story of overcoming with a refreshing frankness. 

In this episode, you will hear from our special guest Deja Slaughter about her journey from domestic violence, addiction and homelessness to Shepherd's Gate, a women and children's program located in the Bay Area of California.

In this episode we got to hang out with a woman who is a legend at Shepherd's Gate, Diane Johansen, volunteer extraordinaire and AA sponsor/leader.

Diane shares with us her story of hitting her rock bottom and overcoming addiction and how God and the steps of AA helped her get back on her feet and stay sober for over 23 years!!  We talk with her about the importance of finding and keeping a sponsor throughout your journey in  sobriety.

January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month and since Shepherd's Gate has helped victims of human trafficking we wanted to talk about what human trafficking is, some of the misconceptions about it and how to keep your kids safe on the internet from it. Yep, human trafficking happens here in the US and one of the targets is vulnerable kids on social media. Our guest today is Andrew Dawson and we are so excited to welcome him to the podcast!

Andrew works with F.R.E.E. International leading street outreach and operations in Las Vegas NV. F.RE.E. International is a collaborative network of organizations working to end trafficking in the U.S. 

Andrew is also a presenter with Say Something School Assemblies. SSA is a non-profit organization that educates and inspires thousands of students each year to identify trafficking and sexual exploitation in their schools. Andrew and the amazing SSA team has seen hundreds of students get help. 

Andrew is also the CEO/Founder of Operation For Freedom. A non-profit focused on investigation, intervention, and advocacy for those who are the most vulnerable and at-risk of being trafficked. 

​His work has carried him around the U.S. and Mexico working on rescue operations, missing kid searches, investigations, speaking in schools, and training those who want to find their place in the fight against this horrendous crime.

Welcome to the 2nd episode in a 2-part series today we are talking about Overcoming despair by intentionally spreading joy.

 The first episode we discussed how to experience the peace and joy of Jesus internally, this episode we will be talking about taking that peace and joy and intentionally spreading joy to others, basically taking the commandments Jesus talked about- loving God and loving others and living that out no matter what you are going through right now.

Our purpose in these 2 episodes is to help those who are struggling with their circumstances, to OVERCOME. We have chosen 2 ways we have personally overcome grief and hardship, the first is by experiencing the peace and joy of Jesus internally and then intentionally choosing joy, despite what we are going through or how we feel, and spreading it to others. 

This podcast episode is the first of a 2-part series and is very different from our usual topics. We chose these topics to address the melancholy and grief many experience this time of year during the Holidays.

Our purpose is to help those who are struggling with their circumstances, to OVERCOME. Living in vehicles, couch surfing with friends or family, this segment of the homeless population is surprising in many ways.

Join Carol and Jen as they talk about this group and how the homeless are counted and why it is important to get accurate counts and answer some common questions about the hidden homeless and just who they are may surprise you. 

Jen also shares about her efforts to bring attention to this growing population by living in her sister's van once a week for 3 years in a row to raise funding for Shepherd's Gate and how it was nothing like urban camping.

The New York Times reported that there is a growing demographic of people experiencing homelessness, and it may surprise you who it is. People 55+, the second wave of the Baby Boomer generation, is now a fast growing segment of the homeless population in America, and their numbers on the streets are expected to triple...and that was before Covid 19 hit!

Jen and Carol discuss the story of Beth, a woman in her 70's who ended up homeless after her husband died. They will share about the lack of resources right now in the US for those in their retirement age and how we can all help make a difference to help those in their golden years not end up on the streets.

Homelessness in the U.S. is a huge problem, you already know that, but did you know , over the next four years, fallout from the pandemic is expected to cause chronic homelessness to climb 49% nationwide, according to a new study by the Economic Roundtable, an urban research group.

Take a listen as we discuss the most common questions about homelessness and the people who experience it as well as some of the proposed solutions to the issue. 

Jen Harp has worked in the area of non-profit marketing and public relations for over 20 years. She has enjoyed the opportunities to share her unique perspective as a guest columnist for a local newspaper and various magazines and webzines. 

She started her own marketing and consulting company, big girl on a mission, in 2014 where her mission has been to help non-profits tell their stories through the power of online marketing, websites and social media. 

Jen has been married for 25+ years to her high school sweetheart and is “mom” to Scout.

Carol Patterson has worked in the nonprofit world for over 20 years and is currently serving as the CEO for Shepherd's Gate. She considers it a privilege to share with people all over the Bay Area how God is working through Shepherd’s Gate to restore women and children whose lives have been shattered by abuse and addiction. 

Carol was a senior executive at Cityteam corporate headquarters in San Jose for over 17 years, focused on homelessness and addiction. Her expertise in nonprofit ministry, finance, and operations positioned her to be a visionary leader.

However, it is Carol’s tremendous passion for homeless and abused women and children in the Bay Area that is her most important asset. She is deeply committed to Christ and helping more women break the cycles of homelessness, abuse, and addiction. 

In this episode we discuss domestic violence and tell you the story of Natalia, this episode's Overcomer. Natalia's childhood was one of violence. She witnessed her father beat her mother on a regular basis growing up, and that shaped Natalia.
