A country lad from the Darling Downs in Queensland till his family moved to rural NSW Peter was a sporting kid. He loved his cricket and football.

Boarding at a private school in Sydney Peter twice took 10 wickets in an innings once in the 10'a and 1st XII.

Moving back to Queensland to play cricket Peter joined Wests cricket club on the western side of Brisbane.

In his first game, he took 10 wickets for the day over two innings, was promoted to second grade, and playing 1st grade.

Whilst as Wests he was invited to play golf at Brisbane Golf Club, a club where in 8 months was down to scratch and he eventually became a trainee pro.

World Series Cricket, County Cricket, and Currie Cup were Mike's avenues to display his skills.

Post-retirement Mike went on to coach South Africa and then become a Match Referee.

Mike was involved with the now infamous "Monkey Gate" saga between India and Australia.

The West Indian cricket teams of the late '70s, '80s and '90s were a powerhouse in world cricket. Ferocious fast bowlers, Cavelier batsman and they could move in the field like panthers.
Front and centre was Physical trainer Dennis Waight.
Dennis was a talented footballer till injury struck. During a chance meeting with the Australian trainer, he discovered the West Indies required a trainer for their upcoming Australian tour.
Dennis with his train hard, play hard attitude soon fitted in and names like Garner, Lloyd, Marshall, Richards, Holding and Haynes not only became friends but family.

David started writing for the local paper in Tamworth, a job that he loved.
After a conversation with his father, David had to make a decision that would embark him on a journey to Brisbane to take a full-time role as a journalist. This would be the last decision he had to make.
David's career covering rugby league and cricket is a distinguished one in the days when people would wait with bated breath to receive the paper to read what was happening locally and internationally.
David was front and centre.

Our last Bledisloe series victory over the All Blacks, 2 World Cup victories (Kefu played just one due to injury) series-winning victory over the British and Irish Lions.

But who would have thought his greatest challenge would be protecting his family from a random break and enter by youths. 

His family and himself sustained lacerations of varying degrees, hospitalising his wife, son and himself. The family still bear the scars of that night, but they are doing ok.

Protecting his family whilst battling with the thought and values of what he was raised with. He didn't want to harm the perpetrators as they were just kids.

Moving previously to Melbourne from NZ, Damian for a second time with his wife Kim moved to the Qld and didn't return.

Working at Glenlogan Park he soon realised he needed to move to the Sunshine Coast to pursue constant rides.

Riding over 1200 winners in Australia including group 1's internationally.

Weight and the burden of fasting bought about his eventual retirement.

Episode 90 features Auslan Coder Mikey Webb. 

What is Auslan? Auslan is people that communicate with their hands as the majority of them are deaf.

Growing up in a family predominantly deaf, Mikey's first language is signing. He feels more comfortable signing than in his second language speech.

Mikey's career as an Auslan Coder has become more popular since covid and governments are using Auslan Coders to interpret press conferences. 

These animated people who are making unusual motions with their hands are communicating with the deaf or hearing impaired.

Mikey recently shot to notoriety when he was coding Stephen Miles's press conference and the bird shat on his head during that conference. That footage went viral around the world.

Mikey is passionate about his gift and the people that live in his world. A world of silence. You see Mikey's work is helping to bridge the gap in society and at the same time helping those who need a much more inclusive world.

When Wayne stopped playing football the weight started coming on and on and on.

Wayne got to 168kg and appeared on national TV in the Biggest Loser to go on his weight loss journey.

Leaving the show at 98kg which is a feat in itself, the roller coaster of weight loss/gain started again.

But this time much worse.

Wayne is on another journey of weight loss. This time starting at 198kg. Following a stroke, Wayne has now made a plan along with personal trainer Shannon from the biggest loser. this is Wayne's story.

The Redcliffe connection when Rupert was going through a difficult time took him on a journey to New York where he recited a poem at Ground Zero in commemoration for the fallen firefighters of the 9/11 disaster.

Poetry has given Rupert an avenue to express himself and given situations relevance through words. Starting when poetry was considered cool. 

Words, expressions and dignity has given Rupert a life less travelled.

Mel a  representative schoolboy cricketer for Queensland, went on to play at Easts Cricket Club in Brisbane before injury put pay to his playing days.

This has now led to his calling full time with the channel nine NRL team.

Grant Menzies is a second-generation watchmaker businessman. Adina Watches started making watches in Australia in 1971. Bob Menzies whilst working for Langfords (Rolex Distributer) decided to have a crack at his own brand and make his own product.

Now AdinA watches manufacture 40,000 watches a year from Woollongabba Brisbane.

Grant and Bob as passionate about their product, making timepieces of quality that can be handed down through generations. 

Grant doesn't do things by halves, his second passion which he shares with his family is cycle touring.

This weeks guest on Just Havin a Crack in some ways helped change the face of Australian Basketball Brian Kerle.

Brian represented Australia at the 1972 Munich Olympics when the ill-fated terrorist attack in the Olympic village took place.

Brian was a good tennis player through his early childhood before he went to his local PCYC to shoot some hoops.

Brian will be remembered most for his days at the  Brisbane Bullets through the early 1980s. In a rugby league mad town, Brian and the bullets became the hottest ticket. Filling the Brisbane Entertainment Centre to capacity regularly. So much so Senator Ron Macaliffe reached out to try and replicate into rugby league.

Now in his 70's Brian is still very much involved in basketball his passion.

Adam Slee is a nail technician based in the UK, who first discovered his affinity for nail art in his mother's nail salon. Slee started working in the nail industry as a salon employee and educator for Star Nails.

In 1997, Adam opened a salon in Spain but returned to the UK shortly after to pursue work for United Beauty Products as the UK & Europe Training Manager. Over two years, Slee trained over 6000 people in all aspects of nail care and assisted Newman Beauty owner Marian Newman on fashion shoots. Following a sabbatical in Ghana, Slee returned to session work and joined Newman's team in 2007. 

In 2011, Slee was named Rimmel London's first UK Nail Ambassador. Slee has worked with brands such as Chanel, L'Oréal, Mulberry, Net-a-Porter, Nivea, Revlon, Rolex, Samsung, Swarovski, and many more. Slee has also worked with celebrities including Anne Hathaway, Carey Mulligan, Claudia Schiffer, Dakota Fanning, Florence Welch, Georgia May Jagger, Kylie Minogue, Lily Allen and Twiggy.

This weeks guest on Just Havin a Crack is successful Qld horse trainer Stuart Kendrick.

Stuart grew up in country Queensland (Mackay) Stuart didn't have a horse background. Through country shows and friends, he develops an interest in Arabian Horses. 

That was the start of a life dedicated to the equine industry and horse racing.

Stuart now is nationally recognised as one of the finest horsemen going around, winning Sunshine Coast trainer of the year multiple times.

Jeff or Thommo as he was known struck fear into every batsman worldwide. He was frighteningly quick. Even the great West Indian teams of the '70s and early 80's respected Jeff and the bowler he was. Paired with Dennis Lillie they were one of the most feared opening bowing attacks the world has seen.

Jeff is frank, he calls a spade a spade. He doesn't mince his words. He is a humble man who hasn't forgotten his past and the mates he has made along the way.

Tim decided one day to go for a run. That lasted 2hrs and not very many kilometres till he had to ring his mother to come and get him. He was spent. But from that day, Tim has run ever since. Discovering a new high, the endorphins you get from exercise. He now has a passion to get more people moving and with that comes his big adventure.

When you think of Brisbane First grade rugby league in the late 70's early 80's rugby league was a tough game. A game played for men. No tougher place to play in Brisbane was Bishop Park or Bash Up Park to opposition sides.
The mighty Norths Devils had a history in Brisbane rugby league similar to St George in Sydney.

With names like Motassa, Bishop, Bax, Churchill, Murry, Draper & Brohman to name a few. Norths has a proud heritage.

Then came 1979 a tall raw bone man from Cronulla with the nickname of Zulu arrived.

Who would have thought that in 1980 and years to come after that, people will talk of the character Campbell "Zulu" Dews

Even time Campbell ran the ball, the grounds would fill with Zulu Zulu

Michael McKenzie went into the Seoul Olympics as the favourite for the Men's 1500m Freestyle.
Let's go back to the start, Michael swimming his very first 400m Freestyle event broke Stephen Holland's Australian Record as a 13-year-old.
Michael was destined to be a long-distance pool swimmer. He follows the thin black line, lap after lap day after day. To swim the 1500m requires you to have a tremendous base of fitness.
Before Perkins, Hackett, Kowolski and Hausmann, Michael was a Three-time Pan Pac's gold Medalist,  World Championship and Commonwealth Games medalist.
The Olympics beckoned, no one saw the stomach bug coming that went through the whole swim team.

Episode 49 of Just Havin a Crack, Angus Waddell.

Angus has a unique story being one of few Australians to compete for Australia in Athletics and swimming.

Angus was a fine high jumper, which took him to the Brisbane Commonwealth Games. Along with his father as his coach, Angus was a driven athlete, but he loved competing and the love of the sport wasn't lost on him.

Following the Commonwealth Games and other events, Angus ruptured his Achilles and was no longer able to compete in the high jump.

He turned his hand to swimming. he became good, very good. That talent took him to Pan-Pac's and the Barcelona Olympics. The 50m Freestyle was his pet event.

Growing up in South Africa and having a famous older brother (Tony), Ian forged his own way as a professional cricketer.
After just two tests for England Ian was dropped from the test side. He went onto have a successful county cricket career, only to be on the verge of a Test recall, captain no less.  This was dashed because him spending his summers in Australia playing cricket and missing one year of the county cricket season.

Burnie was one of the most respected Rugby League referees in the BRL competition, through the celebrated days of Brisbane Club Rugby League.

Today we conclude the chat with Craig Turnbull (Spin).

Following on from the loss of Razz from a mine, Craig concluded his second tour of Afghanistan.

Once at home attempted to move into a customs role outside of the military. Due to circumstances, Spin was unable to make that progression.

Spin was then asked to go back to Afghanistan for a third tour and lead dog company. Spin again saw a change in the conflict the enemy was continually getting smarter.

Craig then gets "Tank" as his dog, Craig and Tank worked together and performed duties that saved lives and truly made a difference.

Dogs, mine detection dogs. Spin's section of brave soldiers cleared the way for others to follow. Working at the very front on each patrol, dogs like Sam, Razz, Tank & Sarbi cleared the way. Both dog and handler were in constant threat of taking explosions. Their jobs were to detect mines and as we go through this podcast you will hear how the Taliban got smarter and put prices on the dogs and handlers heads. That was the impact Spin's section had on the enemy.

Today's guest Len Pascoe a son of an immigrant family landing in Western Australia when quite young. Eventually found thier way to the Western Suburbs of Sydney, where Len's story really begins.

Taking nothing for granted Len and his great mate Jeff Thompson terrorised opposition batsman from club level to Test cricket and World Series Cricket. Len can't tell his story without Thommo being in it.

Today we speak to hard running Wallaby centre Richard Tombs.
Richard's story is a story of courage, hope and Australian larrikinism.
Richard, was apart of the successful 1991 Rugby world cup winning squad. Looking back that was the start of a golden era in Australian Rugby. 
Outstanding wins against Ireland in the Quater Final and New Zealand in the Semi set up the world cup final against England.
Richard recalls the event leading up and after that final. He went on to play rugby at the highest level and was a very respected player amongst his peers.
Several years later and who would have thought, but playing a game of soccer would turn Richard's life around.
Breaking his C4 in his neck, Richard was faced with a life in a wheelchair without the movement of his limbs.
Whilst in Hospital and a routine check up from the doctor, they discovered Richard had movement in his toes. 
He had hope!
Listening to Richard's story you can't help but feel optimism and belief that adversity doesn't define or condemn you.

In this episode of #JustHavinaCrack we talk to elite #freestyle swimmer and Australian swimmer #ClydeLewis.

Clyde is the reigning Commonwealth champion in the 400m Individual #medley from the last commonwealth games held on the Gold Coast.

You may recall Clyde's now-famous interview straight after the race was totally spent collapsed and need a chair to finish the interview.

Well, Clyde in his own words "Buried Himself" during the race.

Due to injury, Clyde was unable to keep the #Breathstroke leg of the Medley going. He has now dedicated himself to #freestyle, which he had to fast track his training to become even quicker for the upcoming World Championships.

During the championships Clyde qualified for the final of the 200m freestyle, his semi-final time would have won him gold in the final. For that year Clyde held a fast time in the world.

Clyde's #olympics dream is still alive, with the event being cancelled in 2020 due to covid Clyde is now setting his sights on the 2021 Olympics to held later this year, all going well.

Welcome to this episode of #JustHavinaCrack. Today's guest Ashley Mallett was a fine spin bowler for Australia. His career was cut short because of work commitments, Ashley turned his hand to coaching and is an acclaimed journalist.

Ashley played in an era where the names like Benaud and Laurie were replaced with Chappell, Lillee and Walters.

World Series Cricket Ashley was part of the defection and recalls the phone call he received from #DonBradman to stay with the establishment.

With #NathonLyon playing his 100th Test at the Gabba at the time of release, he recalls his involvement with Lyon and his rise to being a great finger spinner for Australia.

Ashley's has now written many books for which he is internationally recognised. He fondly recalls the book he wrote #LordsDreaming The Story of the 1868 Aboriginal Tour of England and Beyond. He talks about #JohnnyMullagh for which the MOM at the #BoxingDayTest is now the receiver of the Johnny Mullagh Medal.

Commonwealth games, Panpac's and Olympic's Julie competed against the worlds best, like American Janet Evans and British swimmer Sara Hardcastle. The Eastern block nations and their doping scandals were rife. 

Julie wouldn't swap her Olympic Bronze for anything.

In fact, the times Julie swum, she would win gold in today's meets.

#BarryMuir, Barry was an outstanding halfback playing for Australia in an era of #RugbyLeague was willing and no inch was given on the field. 

Langlands, Raper, Gasnier and Kelly were some of the greats Barry played with. 

Barry is synonymous with the phrase cockroach, a term he used for the NSW players in the interstate series before #StateofOrigin began. Barry was the coach of #Queensland at the time. 

Barry is a legend in Rugby League.  Without Barry, there are no Cockroaches.

Jason is an AFL legend, playing over 320 games, 3 Premierships with the Brisbane Lions, Brownlow Medial Winner and Four-time all Australian.

Aker was best known for his openness in the press, speed across the ground like no other and off course handstands after winning home games.

Behind all this was a kid growing up with not a lot, a hard-working mother that didn't have a lot of time to spend at home. It was Aker and one of his brothers Rory who formed an incredibly close bond.

Aker fought for everything, nothing came to Aker cheaply. No handouts, no help.

Growing up and being hyperactive Aker turned to sport as his way of managing himself. Cricket, AFL and Athletics. 

This story and the more we got to know Aker became larger and more powerful. You see underneath everything is a deep-thinking, empathetic and fiercely loyal proud man.

In someway Aker needed to have this journey to get him to where he is in life now.

Aker owns everything, there is no running away.

Jo went on to represent Australia at Test and One-Day level with great results. Averaging over 109 with the bat, scoring a test double century and playing in front of 60,000 women and girl in a world cup final in India.

Think about that for a second, a women's sporting event with 60,000 spectators! That would rival an Olympic 100 or 200m final or a women's world cup soccer final.

Jo is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to cricket and has strong family values. Jo isn't just a pioneer in women's cricket she is a pioneer in women's sport.

3 CUPS and a SHEIKH

We talk to Kerrin McEvoy who is currently preparing for the spring racing carnival. Kerrin was up at 3 am the morning we recorded this podcast. The life of a jockey isn't an easy one, but Kerrin's story is a story of greatness. A 49 kg giant.

Winning his first Melbourne Cup (2000 Brew) at 19 Kerrin's life was catapulted into the hemisphere of opportunity. Kerrin was contacted by Godolphin (Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum) the most powerful name in horse racing to come to ride for him in Europe, Dubai and also to ride in Australia (Then Darley).
This is not your average riding gig. Kerrin had a long association with Godolphin. Legging up on the best horses you can imagine ( Dubawi, Sharmadal, Denman, Sepoy, Helmet). 

In 2013 Kerrin decides to go Freelance and leave Godolphin where his career continues to shine winning 2 Everest's on Redzel.

Family man, elite jockey Kerrins life is not average.

1948 INVINCIBLE

Our special guest this week is the great Neil Harvey who is an Australian test Cricketer who represented Australia between 1948 and 1963, playing in 79 Test matches. He was the vice-captain of the team from 1957 until his retirement. An attacking left-handed Batter and regarded as one of our greatest ever players. Harvey was also one of the best fieldsmen Australia has ever produced.  Neil was the senior batsman in the Australian team for much of the 1950s Upon his retirement, He was also the second-most prolific Test run-scorer and century-maker for Australia at the time of his retirement.

We chat to Neil about the early days of his career before making his debut in January 1948 in Adelaide aged 19 years and three months. In his second test match at the MCG, he became the youngest Australian to score a Test century leading into the famous 1948 invincible tour regraded as one of the finest teams in history. After initially struggling in English conditions in the lead-up games, he made a century on his Ashes debut. We also talk about the trip on the ship to England in 1948 and chat about his Captain Sir Donald Bradman.

Neil ended up after the 1948 invincible tour becoming one of our greatest ever test batsmen scoring 6149 test runs including 21 100s and 24 50s at an average of 48.41 including a best of 205.

We speak to Gavin "Jed" Allen FOG number 72 and great Queenslander. Gavin played football in a tough era of rugby league. Coming down from Cairns to play for Valleys in the BRL competition and winning the best and fairest for the comp in his first year. St George beckoned after that, but not before lunch with the great Arthur Beetson to convince him to go to the Roosters.
Jed is a typical country kid, no-nonsense and just gets the job done attitude. 
Unbeknown to him and following his father receiving a heart transplant before Jed's Origin debut, Jed also carry the same complaint.
Playing his entire career with a heart that had less than 25% capacity.
Jed too needed a transplant which he received a short while ago. Jed talks with pride and passion for that opportunity.

BLACKBEARD AFGHANISTAN and the CIA

We speak to Peter who was widely regarded as the best wicketkeeper Australia has produced.

As we know Peter was understudy to many exceptional wicketkeepers before he got his opportunity to represent QLD. An injury would also catapult Ian Healy to the test side and well, the rest is history. 

Peter played 1st class cricket, retired and went onto represent QLD again in the Sheffield Shield competition whilst playing in the Bundaberg club cricket competition. This was the first time a player selected from the country, in 40 years.

When Peter's playing career finished, coaching called. Coaching PNG, Afghanistan and the Cayman Islands.

Peter talks in-depth of his time coaching Afghanistan. A country at war, corruption, death threats and eventually a CIA enquiry which sent Peter to Washington.

Peter of recently has battled throat cancer which we can say he is doing extremely well and in good health.

From club cricket in Brisbane to the steps of Washington this is a great story.

Sean Mulqueen was 25 when he enlisted in the Australian army, his trigger was 9/11. Like all of us, we remember that day. Well for Sean it was his memory which prompted him to enlist in the Australian Army.
Mully's grandfather was a Rat of Tobruk, his legacy lived with Mully and Mully wanted to do his country proud.
Mully joined the Combat Engineers, doesn't sound much but the storey grows from there.
The combat engineers like all soldiers have an important role to play in combat. Yes, they build infrastructure and support for others, but they also provide clearance for troops when a survey on patrol. You see the engineer is the pointy end of the patrol, looking for mines, explosives and other weaponry that could cause harm to the rest of the troops.
This story we go into the Afganistan conflict and we see it from a solders eye.
The situation was real, the enemy was real.
Mully returned with battle scars but the biggest injury was the mental scars of war.
We named this episode 42 Courageous Brave But Not Forgotten, this is to support Mully's charity which he set up with his mates that served in Afganistan.
42 for 42 represents the 41 fallen soldiers in the Afghanistan conflict and the 42nd is for those who have tragically taken the lives through suicide.

A ROCK N ROLL OLYMPIC GOLD MEDAL

Today we talk to Olympic Gold Medalist Natalie Cook. Nat was one part of the Olympic Gold Medal winners of the Female Gold Medal for Beach Volleyball in the Sydney Olympics. One the same day in 2000 as Cathy Freeman won gold in the 400m.
The Volleyball at the Sydney games was given rock star status. Located on the beach at the famous Bondi Beach, 10,000 people crammed into the grandstands to watch Nat and Kerrie Pottharst win gold against the red hot Brazilian team.
Nat's gold medal was Australia's 99th gold medal and Cathy's famously being the 100th gold medal.
Nat has her podcast series "On My Day" which is consecutive days on which the Tokyo Olympics which have been cancel due to COVID. We talk to Nat about her guests, her series is a great insight into an Olympic Athlete.
Nat is a five-time Olympian and is still heavily involved in the Olympic movement.

STUART LAW THE SHERIFF OF QLD CRICKET

Blakey and Banger sit down to talk with Queensland great Stuart Law. Stuart was an outstanding batsman in an era of cricket where competition for spots in the Australian side was hard-won.

Stuart did represent Australia in one Test match but doesn't have a test average, but does have a test half-century. He went on to represent Australia in a world cup and many one-day internationals.

Stuart held the Sheffield Shield aloft as captain of Queensland's first-ever shield winning side. That was the start of a dynasty of Queensland cricket dominance.

Stuart is a great Queenslander, a passionate Queenslander and this shines through in our chat with Stuart.

Stuart did represent Australia in one Test match but doesn't have a test average, but does have a test half-century. He went on to represent Australia in a world cup and many one-day internationals.

Stuart held the Sheffield Shield aloft as captain of Queensland's first-ever shield winning side. That was the start of a dynasty of Queensland cricket dominance.

Stuart is a great Queenslander, a passionate Queenslander and this shines through in our chat with Stuart.

Whilst playing for NSW topped the First-class averages in his first two years of Shield Cricket. Won a shield final for NSW and went on to represent Australia under 25's and toured Zimbabwe and meeting, Robert Mugabe.

Peter is a deeply respected figure in Brisbane Club cricket, his knowledge of the game is second to none.

He grew up in an era when Australian cricket was strong and he more than held his own.

He is proud of his achievements and this is a ripping yarn.

We move on to talking to Greg about his test career. Greg is one of Australia's greatest cricketers and Australian captains.

Greg talks about his test debut, where he was picked as an all-rounder batting at number 7. He made his test debut against England in December 1970 at the first-ever test played at the WACA.

In that test, Greg took his first test wicket (Caught and Bowled Colin Cowdrey) and his first test hundred batting with Ian Redpath.

Greg discusses his light bulb moment where he becomes the formidable test batsman of his era.

There are two significant moments in Greg's career. His run of ducks and Under Arm. Greg talks candidly about both situations.

In this episode "Run Like a Rabbit," we talk to Mark Hore. Mark at 46 was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Mark went to his doctors as a routine men's health check. Following this appointment, Mark had his prostate removed and his life changed. Mark doesn't consider himself a cancer survivor, but someone who has been given a second chance, as Mark declares "a lucky one"

Mark turns to long-distance running and now enjoys a full enjoyable life.

This episode gives you an insight into Mark's experiences dealing with the post-operation changes to his life and how he now manages himself on a daily basis.

Mark is an advocate often supporting #Movemeber through his running and a very popular figure in his community.

Greg recently went on a weight loss journey following a doctors visit. Losing 38kg has given him a new lease on life, where the little things matter the most.
