Just because something is forgotten does not necessarily mean that it’s not any good. As the Earth turns on its axis, times change. What was up is now down. What was fast is now slow. Great leaders are forgotten. Hitlers are remembered. Good times are forgotten. Struggles are remembered. 

This podcast, Forgotten, is about forgotten songs. Whenever I write a song that I end up not liking very much, I always throw it away. I never leave it around somewhere to be forgotten. But I do have forgotten songs that I liked at the time that I wrote then but find that years later they might be best forgotten. Early works tend to be forgotten. As the years have gone by gratefully, I’ve gotten better at what I do and so my standards are higher. Still it’s always great to find all these oldies but goodies. I think it was about nine months ago that I was doing my morning read of the New York Times and I came across an article about a recent discovery of an asteroid that seemed to be heading our way. I remember thinking, “Good lord, what next?“ Thus began Benny The Comet – An ancient/modern tale of a boy, Benjamin Exnod, whose father worked at NASA and his discovery of a comet threatening Planet Earth. When comets are discovered, they are often named after the discoverer. Hence Benny The Comet. Should you be alarmed? Only if you miss this wonderful tale of the imagination. One day, not so long ago, I was simply walking across my living room, when a thought hit me and stuck in my head that there was a wealthy elderly man sitting in his den playing a video board game that he had invented. The board game was somewhat magical and most complex. I stopped in my tracks and thought deeper. I realized that he was a God like figure and the board game was us, here on Planet Earth. We were the result of his invention. That was about it. I smiled and moved on across the room. 

But the notion stuck with me. I laughed at the thought and wrote it down on a slip of paper: Living In My Video Game.

Perhaps several years later, here is the result of that pause in life.

I discovered a song I had written 4 or five decades ago. It was a response to a very bad habit that I had fallen into in life. The song was written and performed in my living room studio and was a one take … this means that I sang and played it one time in the recording process. It was an imperfect performance, but, for me, it was a powerful reaction to a profound turning point in my life. It touched me very deeply to hear the depth of emotion contained in this one take. I loved the song and decided to re-record it. As it was , in several tries I could not match the depth of the song sung by the much younger me. So I used the original Guitar/Vocal mixed track and added an orchestration to it in my studio – a duet performed by the two Mes – young and old.

Troubles Be Gone – How to get through it…

I had had a rough day. The things that were supposed to happen, didn’t happen. The things that never were supposed to happen, happened. It happens to all of us. 

Yeah, life on planet Earth can be a roller coaster ride. I thought to myself, “Well, what do we do now“? How do we turn defeat into victory? Today, I’m going to introduce you to a surefire starter kit. It’s not a permanent solution, but it is, for most of us humans, a wondrous temporary solution. It requires little effort and is definitely fun and satisfying.

Recently I applied my solution and, as usual, it worked like a dream. It worked so well, that I decided to write a song about it. 

Join me as I demonstrate that solution right before your very eyes!

Recently, in August of 2024, we released a Watchfire Music Theater Of The Imagination video entitled Brent Nicholson Earl, A Most Extraordinary Man. It is an amazing story of determination and triumph, and it memorializes the 1986 fundraising Close Upon The Hour Concert in New York City that helped finance Brent Nicholson Earle, and The American Run For The End Of Aids, his historic run around the circumference of the United States, bringing National attention to the plight and potential solutions of the AIDS epidemic. 

 In the video, I tell the story of this lifelong friend who spent his life championing Gay rights. The story, which was the main feature in a decade ending People Magazine Special, is a doozy. In remembering back, there are so many angles to the telling of the story, that I found it impossible in the video to tell the complete story. 

 Consequently, in October of 2024 I interviewed Brent Nicholson Earl and asked him to look back once again at this time in his life nd recall some of the amazing insights and special moments of his historic run.a This podcast, an addendum to the video, does just that.

The phone rang. I picked it up and the lady on the other end said, “Hi, I am the director of the Creative Arts program at Camp Newfound Owatonna. I’m looking for a teacher to put together a music class for this summer's creative arts program at camp. A week or so at this camp in the cool state of Maine woods by a lake in August seemed to totally make sense. The baby kicks again — and we’re off to the races.

Three highly intelligent people join the family.

We stand on the threshold of a new world.

All hope lost of walking 500 miles to California, our little family stands at the crossroads of their lives, seemingly destitute. But fate has a few more fascinating and otherworldly solutions comin’ their way in the person of three visitations. The road South leads to Sedona, AZ, a place of great mystique and the center of a highly active vortex of energies. All happenstance? Probably not. Thyme goes into labor.

With no wheels, and back to walkin’, their desperate straights produce a surprising result — The Making of a Father.

Desperate straits sometimes result in heroic feats … sometimes.

First, another death, the death of an old friend and trusted companion — the Purple Chariot. The Studebakes throws a rod and they’re back to walkin’. Too many people in their party to expect that anybody would ever pick them up hitch hikin’. So, things have never looked bleaker. In this episode they all battle the sun and its heat. They’re back to walkin’ an; that definitely ain’t workin’. They all hit the bottom of the barrel and even our stalwart leader, Josiah, gives up. He tries to talk to God, but this is muscle building time at its worst, so God is out to lunch. Josiah elicits the help of the angels, but they also seem to have their hands tied, and must reflect God’s orders. Guardian Angel Gabriel does what he can and Josiah takes on the mantle of manhood and rises to the occasion, but even that doesn’t last for long.

 All seems lost when yet another miracle appears in the person of Slick Presley, Third Cousin to Elvis and his Trusty Mariah. This gets them through the night, but then Slick turns North and once again they are left at the side of the road. A mocking Slick leaves them with these prophetic words, “ Only 500 miles to go …” Slick goes North, the long road ahead goes west, they can’t go East because that’s back from whence they came, and the mystical town of Sedona Arizona is South as they all stand under the hot sun at the crossroads of their lives.

We Smell A Rat

Hoodwinked, Jose finds a new friend and fellow traveler (Ramon) who takes off the financial pressure and loves to proclaim, “And it’s all on me!” In real life he’s an undercover agent for the CBP steadfastly protecting his country from terrorists and their instruments of terror — that would be Jose and Maria, our illegal immigrants. Undercover agent is uncovered by Lizzie before he can arrest and imprison them all, Ramon meets his inglorious end with the help of out purple chariot and its “malfunctioning” hood stick.

Three sleeping bags, six people and a baby. Somehow we’ll just make do.

Too poor for a Motel Six, they buy 3 sleeping bags and decide to sleep in the open air of the desert. Because of the baby, Jose and Maria get the car and J, T and L get the bags. What ensues is a night of multiple passions and little rest. Gabriel raps episodic on the wondrous variety of Southwestern town names discovered on their journey.

Once again, on the edge of foolishness, Thyme and Josiah demonstrate their generosity. The beginnings of an off-beat family foreshadow much drama, a wealth of laughter, and a mighty struggle comin’ their way.

So our little band of 3 becomes a band of 5 + two babies — one newborn and the other notyet born. The wary Jose becomes troublesome but is balanced by wife, Maria’s steady thinking. They all travel together looking for something they know not what and escaping a past that became unliveable.  The ups and downs of “California, Here We Come” take us to Elvira and Darin’ Darryl’s Dipswitch Diner where a future is plotted.

And so, the three of them hitch hike to Oklahoma City. There they can get lost in the crowd. Josiah has a vision. California, here we come! God warns Thyme that there’s a long and hard road ahead. It appears He is not going to be much help. God says, “That’s good for you. Ride ‘Em Outta Town On A Rail!

Two die. Three escape!

Bishop Goodspeed leads the angry mob on to the church. Once there, they will take care of business and rid the town of local vermin. It’s an old fashioned solution that goes back to the times of Abraham Lincoln, but it’s still as effective as ever. Gallant Gabe becomes the obstacle to Bishop’s endeavors. That too is solved. Some escape; some don’t.

The Visit of Bishop Emmanuel Goodspeed escalates our story to the point of murder.

Lizzie’s big mouth brings nothin’ but trouble. The word gets out and nobody likes it one bit. Thyme and Josiah become the town pariahs. Bishop Goodspeed comes to put a stop on all this nonsense. How could a checkout girl in a podunk town like Skedee possibly become the mother of a new Christ?  Skedee inhabitants, under the guidance of Bishop Goofspeed, go off the deep end adapting a mob mentality, and resort to the worst of responses. The town Gossips play an interesting role in it all.

Another otherworldly interruption leads us to the nearly empty church of Reverend Josiah Washburn, Sunday morning with only Thyme, Gabe and Mama in attendance. (No parishioners) So, a wedding is held where Minister Josiah marries a surprising couple. 

Is Gabe really an angel? You bet! And he’s got the skills ta’ prove it. Josiah is most impressed. This episode being full of surprises, three of which involve Mama, Ms Maybelle Quinn. As it turns out, Mama has a lot more goin’ for her that expected by all. You might even go so far to say that Mama has a whole passel of surprises in store for all of us — including her own daughter.

Searching For My Father

A Podcast Musical Of Biblical Proportions

This Episode’s musical is the story of a boy and his transforming relationship with God. It is told through a collection of short, free verse monologues, dialogues and lyrics (songs) that collectively narrate many of the popular stories of The Bible. 

Our Boy, a brilliant young pianist loses his father and mentor to cancer and consequently his faith as well.

So, God enlists the services of some of the most famous Bible characters of the past, gives them the ability to time travel from the past to the present and share their stories and wisdom with the boy in order to pull him out of his depression and help him regain his faith.

Podcasting — The evolution of the musical is upon us.

It’s time for new works. Scattershot Symphony will now evolve from the past, to the present and into the future. It’s inevitable. So here we are at the cutting edge of 21st century musicals – the musical podcast.

Today we offer a preview, actually, a better word for that would be a PRELISTEN, to songs from a musical of one of the greatest classics of the theater. Euripedes’ Iphigenia In Aulis.  It’s an ancient Greek story, but it resonates with today’s world completely in that it is the story of a war begun with no purpose except to please a deranged leader’s egotistical wishes. Sound familiar?

In order to break traditions, one first has to know the traditions. The traditions of songwriting are the fundamentals developed over the centuries from Beethoven to George Gershwin to Billy Joel to Adele.  Writing for the theater always gave me license to stretch the rules of the Pop music traditions. Of course, writing for the theater has its own set of traditions or fundamentals, but they always seemed to come under a much wider umbrella. This particular Episode 21 takes us to the edge of the cliff in exploring the unknown, but because of the stretch, it is one of my favorite episodes.

In my writing today, I find the AABAB - [Verse, verse, chorus, verse, chorus] structure often too limiting for the things I choose to write about, though I deeply honor it. Without the basics we have no structure. On My Way Home - An Immigrant’s Lament is a newly released song written, produced and performed by Peter Link. The issues of immigration today are as perplexing a problem as many of the most challenging issues that we, as the human race, face.  Why? Because at the heart of the Immigration problem lies one of our fundamental truths or principles that we all must live by — the Golden Rule. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

The song is one man’s story of his journey as an Immigrant to America. The song was also made into a music video by videographer, Skye Malone.  In this episode Peter both discusses the evolution of the song and also interviews Skye detailing his creative process in the making of the video.

Peter Link is a two time Tony Award nominee for his work on Broadway. With a million selling record to his credit, success in film scoring, Broadway Musicals, Pop Music, Gospel, Television, Ballet and a New York Theater Critics Drama Desk Award, Peter has had a most varied career.
