In order to understand today's crisis, we need to understand where it came from. The biggest obstacle to overcoming the opioid crisis is stigma. This stigma is rooted in our history, going all the way back to the early 20th century, when it was criminalized on a large scale in the United States.

Since 2004, I have been in recovery from drug addiction. Since that time, it has been my mission to understand all I can about the disease that kills so many people and destroys so many lives. Rooted in trauma, shame, and fear, our view of addiction will change as we open our minds to new information. Addiction is treatable, treatment works, and people recover.
