In London, Marta met her husband who is from Belarus.

Through a friend, Rafael found a job that could sponsor him to get a work visa. So he moved to Christchurch, where a few years earlier have been damaged by a big earthquake. The city had to be rebuilt, and people like Rafael were desperately needed. This opportunity and his humility to adapt to jobs made it “easy” for him to get a work permit and later become a Permanent Resident. Years later, he became a New Zealand citizen.

]]> Rafael is originally from Brazil and decided to go to New Zealand for a year to learn English for better opportunities in his country.
He quit his job and, with some friends, went to New Zealand.
Rafael left Brazil without a visa and just a bit of money. He soon managed to find a job that would sponsor him so he could make some money and stay longer in the country. Instead of stay for a year, as he planned, Rafael stayed for two, and when he moved back to Brazil, he quickly realized that he missed the New Zealand lifestyle.

]]> Growing up in Australia, Louise got surrounded by people her age that immersed themselves in exploring the world. At 22, Louise left Australia for the US. While the majority of her peers went for Europe, Louise's mindset was to take another path.

]]> Mubs is originally from Pakistan, but he immigrated with his family to England at the young age of four.

As a child, he was fond of making things and working with computers, which led him to pursue a degree in software engineering.

]]> Arif Rahman is a research scientist from Bangladesh. His immigration journey began when he made a plan to study for his Ph.D. outside of his country.

]]> Sylvia began exploring the world outside Brazil when she decided to get her master's degree in psychology in Australia. A whole new adventure welcomed her, and there, she met her also Brazilian husband-to-be.

After years of living in Australia, they decided to go back to Brazil because of homesickness.

Afterward, Sylvia got married, and they both agreed on building their life outside of Brazil. Still, the process of leaving didn't go easy on them.

Even as the point in her life where she started building her own family, Tanya continued to move around countries, now, with her kids.
From living in Ontario, Canada, with her kids, they moved to Barcelona, Spain as a family. Although moving with kids is a big challenge, Tanya treasures the fact that her children could experience life in different countries, which not a lot can have.

]]> Ray is one of those 'Third Culture Kids' who grew up with a diverse family culture. He grew up in Turkey, and he spoke Tagalog, English, and Turkish. Ray's immigration journey officially started when his parents decided to send him to the US to study.
It was then when he began to live alone for the first time and got enlightened with the cultural differences between the US and his hometown. Ray made an effort to adapt himself to the American culture to interact with people his age.

Her urge to move to Canada started when she failed to enter her desired university. Instead of going back to Grade 12, which is the Chinese education system's rule, Ran decided to go to Canada and study there. She experienced struggles of not being able to speak English and, along with that, overcoming her character of being socially reserved. Ran eventually encouraged herself to learn and live a life with less fear of making mistakes. Looking back on her journey, Ran was grateful for the opportunity of being able to start a new and better life in a country where she felt free. Currently, Ran is working in Canada and has received her permanent residency earlier this year.

After finishing high school, Felipe decided to leave his country to learn English in the US. He went back to Colombia six months later and started his college education, but then, a financial crisis happened, and he decided to take a chance and continue his education in the US.

Upon studying college, He was able to obtain scholarships but to sustain his personal and daily expenses, Felipe needed to work while studying.

Years passed, and Felipe finished his studies, and he faced a decision where he was struggling to either go back home or to stay in the US. When the company he worked for as an intern offered him a job, Felipe decided to go for it. It was a decision he made after contemplating the greater opportunities these two countries could offer. Meeting a woman who then became his wife played a crucial part in his decision to stay.

Looking back to where he is now as a successful engineer in New York, Felipe remains grateful for the support system his family have given though they were miles apart from each other.

Being a young man who took a huge jump and moved to another country in search of greater opportunities, it was definitely challenging for Felipe.
Nevertheless, the journey was worth it for him.

In the end, all that matters is what’s waiting for you at the end of the road which is totally worth it either for Felipe or to any emigrants who might be reading this. It is worth it so keep on going.

They were prohibited from learning a new language and living in another place besides their country. Their life was like a painting deprived of colour. 

When Eva started living in Kiev to study for college, she was cast as a model, and her knowledge about the world outside Soviet grew wider. She was able to perform all over the world, and be on the cover of an Australian magazine. Along with these accomplishments, Eva was able to graduate with a bachelor's degree in construction engineering. 

After the Soviet Union collapsed and Ukraine became an independent country, Eva, along with her partner, moved to the United States where she started a new life away from her established career back in Ukraine. With the long wait for her green card, Eva was not able to work, and this made her pursue different careers.

Now, Eva is working on a new business, which will open more opportunities for her and also help other women pursue a better life. 

Eva Sigaev's story is something rare. It is a story of a woman who chases freedom and finds it in a place unknown to her. Eva did not let herself be comfortable with the many achievements she had. Instead, she took the bravery to enter a new world and find how far her potentials can go. Eva was able to turn her black and white life into something more colourful, something that she is proud of and would never regret doing.

Darya was able to sustain living in the U.S. through her online business which she had back in Ukraine. Being a fitness expert back in her country, she was able to bring her career in the U.S. which also helped her pay for her studies.

I remember being fascinated by his story. What attracted me was the fact that he was running a successful company in his country. He was then working with me as a trade assistant on a minimum wage. What does bring a person to make a downgrade in their career like that? He must have had a pretty good reason.

Luis is originally from Brazil. Graduated as a business administrator and civil engineer, Luiz, and his business partner opened some computer stores. A few years later, he decided to leave retails to move to construction. He then started his construction company, and it was doing well.

The World Cup in 2014 brought a lot of corruption in the construction sector. He got to the point where he couldn’t live any longer with the crime and corruption of the country he was born. He wouldn’t go to work on Fridays for fear of being robbed and hurt. Friday in Brazil is payday, and people in construction get paid cash.

After going to New Zealand on holiday a few years earlier, he realized how beautiful and safe it was. In 2015 he decided to leave Brazil, and he moved to New Zealand a year after.

At this point, he had a wife and A 2 years old son. His only chance to move to New Zealand was a student visa that allowed him to work for 20 hours per week. He took the opportunity and moved there first to find a job and a place to live before his family joined him 20 days later.

He managed to find a house, and his neighbor happened to be the HR of a telecommunication company. Thanks to his neighbors, he managed to get a job and apply to a work permit.

Jess found a job online as an English teacher in China and already had a job and a place to stay when she landed. A year before moving to China, she went to work in a summer camp in Seattle, US. After coming came back for that experience, she wanted to keep traveling. She used every opportunity and time off work to travel around Europe, where flights can be very cheap.

When she moved to China, she had a plan-b in case she didn't like it. Her plan-b was a visa for Australia. She ended up loving China, but at the end of her visa to work as a teacher, she moved to Australia, where she worked and traveled for a year before moving to Canada.

She already had a job lined up in Nova Scotia, Canada, to work in a resort, but because of the covid, the job offer fell through, and her plan changed. She now lives in Vancouver, Canada.

His partner Anna is from the UK, and the two children have a UK passport.

Although they have been together for more than a decade, getting his visa is still challenging. Finding the information and requirement is not straight forward, which brought him to a rejection from the immigration. Craig was waiting to go back to New Zealand to re-apply for his visa at the time of the interview. That means he has to leave his family until the immigration process his application and get his visa, or he's allowed to re-apply for a visitor visa.

Frustration is almost inevitable when dealing with immigration. Your life is on the line, and until you have an answer, you feel like you are in limbo.

This episode is a good eye-opener for anyone who is thinking of emigrating. Chances are you will face struggles and rejections. Nothing worth having comes easy.
It's also a good reminder for those of you that have been through it and now are residents or citizens in the new country. It was a long process, but you made it!

He started his career as a professional mountain biker in the ’80. He raced all over North America, and then he moved to Japan to race for Rocky Mountain.

He was born in the UK. His family then moved to Canada. When he was in high school, his family moved from Toronto to Vancouver. At that time, mountain biking was very new, and the north shore was becoming the stage of the first professional riders. It was then that he discovered the sport and felt in love with it. He quit his “secure” job that was paying him a good salary for a dream: becoming a professional mountain biker. Back then, professional mountain biking wasn’t a real thing.

Around 1999 and 2000, he used his name to open his shop, Yatsugatake cycling. He started by teaching Japanese to get better riders. He now guides people from all over the world, from professional mountain bikers to people like me. That’s when I met him.

She is one of the most generous and kind people I know.

This interview was recorded at the beginning of April. She is part of the Flatten the Curve hand made masks, a group of volunteers that are sewing masks for people at risk.

Her story as emigrant started in the ’70 when she left Scotland to move to the Middle East with her husband. It’s then that her life of expat began. Her husband, a pastry chef, got a job in a hotel in the United Arab Emirates. They lived there as expat for almost 5 years to then decided to move to Canada and try to settle permanently. Although they had help from family members in Vancouver, they had a hard time fitting in. A few months later, her husband had a job opportunity in Tahiti, so they decided to go back to live the expat life for a few more years. Even though Tahiti was beautiful and she had time to take care of their two children, she couldn’t work, and having a career for her was important. So after living in that beautiful island for 2 years, they decided to move back to Vancouver and give it a second chance. She started her career in a small startup. After growing inside the company and becoming director of global communications, she decided to open her own marketing agency.

I grew up in a small town in the north of Italy. I now live in Vancouver, Canada. 

I left Italy when I was 27, I quit my secure job despite everybody saying it wasn’t the right decision, and I got on a plane to New Zealand. 

I lived in New Zealand for four and a half years. I loved it. I was living my dream life—excellent mountain biking, surfing, snowboarding, good friends, good beer, and excellent steaks. I left because I wanted to switch my career, and I couldn’t do that with my work permit. I also tried to push myself. I realized my life had become too comfortable. When you are in a Fight-or-flight situation, like start your life from scratch and not able to communicate (me when I got to NZ), you give your 100%. I wanted to replicate that. 

I moved to Canada on a working holiday visa again. Things went sideways at the airport in Vancouver. They only gave me six months. That’s not a lot of time to find a job and decide if you want to stay or not. I managed to find a job two months before it ran out. My amazing bosses help me with the sponsorship. The bureaucracy was crazy, the most stressful months of my life. I almost gave up. But three months later, I got my visa for two years. 

I’ve been living here for almost two years now.
