I met drummer Roan Anderson while at the Jazzahead! 2026 Trade Show and Festival in Bremen. We chatted then and it was great to have a proper conversation for this episode in the cafe at Kings Place in London.

Roan won the BBC Scotland Jazz Musician of the Year competition in 2025 and has already - just two years out of the Glasgow Conservatoire - been playing with lots of exciting new ensembles. There’s clearly great things to come in his musical future.

I had the opportunity to interview Maestro Swafford in person and then attend a recording of his tone poem Late Autumn-First Snow at Abbey Road. The orchestra that day was formed from members of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by the marvellous Michael Shapiro. This episode is unusual, in that Sara Karloff is not a musician. She is the only daughter of Boris Karloff, star of many films but famously the 1931 adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.

Sara will join composer Michael Shapiro in London on 25 October as his original score is performed in London together with a screening of Frankenstein: commissioned in 2001, it has been presented in over 75 sold-out productions worldwide. I travelled to Milan in November 2021 and the experience of hearing Michael’s music while watching such a genre-defining and ground-breaking film from nearly a century ago was extraordinary.

I chatted with Michael in October 2020, April 2021 and October 2024.

The music I’m playing alongside my conversation with Sara Karloff is from Michael Shapiro’s In the Light of the Sun, performed by members of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Stathis Karapanos (flute). I was fortunate in being in the studio when this was recorded.

While spending four days at jazzahead! In Bremen last week, I chatted with several musicians and you can hear extracts from those chats here. I have also started including transcripts, if you would prefer to read what we have talked about.

1. This episode begins with a tiny clip of Sahad’s set, before our conversation begins. Sahad is from Senegal - a musician and an activist and it was so inspirational to chat with him.
2. I spoke to Polish composer and singer Hania Derej in the conference centre itself, so I apologise for the background noise.
3. Santa Sillere is a Latvian jazz vocalist and it was a pleasure to chat about her music, and especially her work with Latvian poets.
4. Canadian trumpeter Rachel Therrien has a new album out called Mi Hogar and we chatted about her music in the conference centre.
5. My chat with Martin Fabricius was another one where we caught up in the hustle and bustle of jazzahead! He’s a Danish vibraphone player and we had lots to talk about.
6. I first came across another Danish musician, Kristoffer Rosing-Schow, when listening to the music of The Counterfictionals. I hadn’t realised that Kristoffer is responsible for the art behind that sextet and he shared some of that with me alongside our chat.
7. My final guest took me back into the Radio Bremen recording studio to chat with Swedish vocalist Sara Alden, who has just released Force of Nature.

Guitarist Tom Ollendorff joins me for a conversation as he is set to tour his 2025 album Where in the World around the world.  I’ve heard him play with a number of different ensembles, including with Germana Stella La Sorsa and Tina Mildmay and it’s always a delight. I have wanted to chat with Terry Shaughnessy, AKA Earth-o-Naut, for several months. It was great to have a chat with him, particularly as his album This is Nowhere. This is Everywhere comes out at the end of May.

I last spoke to saxophonist, vocalist and composer Kim Cypher back in 2024. Since then, she has issued LIVE and Smiling, an album recorded at Cheltenham Jazz Festival and Peggy’s Skylight.

Kim is now preparing for an appearance at Cheltenham Jazz Festival 2026, which runs from 29 April to 4 May.

Joakim Milder has been the artistic director of the Norrbotten Big Band since 2013 and I’m looking forward to hearing the band play live at the opening concert of the Jazzahead! music festival in April. I was joined in a central London coffee shop by pianist and composer Marco Cafolla to discuss his work with Mama Terra, Federation of the Disco Pimp and solo as Cafolla. Marco is all about collaboration, while taking absolutely responsibility for the quality of his playing, composing and producing.

It was a joy to chat with him about his impressive work, especially having seen him with Mama Terra at Love Supreme in July 2025.

For this episode, we're discussing Ban: Stories of Censorship, which includes The Book of Names by Marty Regan, which includes narration by George Takei, who is so much more than the actor who portrayed Mr Sulu in Star Trek. You will find out why during our conversation.

The discussions around censorship and this fascinating music were particularly interesting as I have just finished reading James, by Percival Everett, which is a brilliant version of Huckleberry Finn. I can heartily recommend the book as well as this album.
