What does Jealousy in the workplace look like? 

Because I speak to alot of women in different spaces and this topic comes up in very diverse shape and forms. And no...Nobody has ever turned green with envy. That's not what happens in the real world. And so here's why it's confusing..because on the one hand you want to connect and be part of a meaningful work culture where you trust and honor your co-workers. But that doesn't always happen. 

Jealousy – if we are truly introspective is actually a mask emotion. It's a mask for something else, and it tells us something about ourselves. It's usually something we don't want to see...

For instance you might be an older women who is jealous of your younger female colleaugu, on the face of it you probably dislike her because she comes across as arrogant and self-assured. But on a deeper level it could be something you admire and wish you possesed when you were younger – this ability to speak your mind without having to compromise yourself. 

Sometimes we are jealous of women who are actually very similar to us, but the difference is they have the courage to step into their most authentic self – resonating with incredible self-belief.

Inspired by the outcomes of the Beijing Conference in 1995, Mandy is a feminist and has been advocating for gender equality and girls’/women’s empowerment throughout her career. She has worked on programs to strengthen women’s political participation in local governance and economic empowerment globally. 

Mandy has worked on gender mainstreaming and action to end violence against women and children globally , promoting cross-regional programmatic collaboration. She advises government officials, local authorities, and providers on disability equality, participation, inclusion, and rights issues, as well as harmful practices and gender equality. 
Mandy has been involved in research and campaigning programs. She has led several projects with leading charities addressing cultural barriers, stereotypes, misconceptions, barriers, safeguarding, abuse, mentoring, participation, and rights as a global change maker.

Advocating for human rights and gender equality, she works with grassroots projects that help women and girls achieve their individual and collective potential, realize aspirations, and have an equal voice in communities worldwide.

Mandy has been a global voice tackling unconscious bias in tech and A I. Mandy has spoken at some of the world's biggest tech summits, such as GITEX, CogX, Women of Silicon Valley Roundabout, and Teens In AI Data+AI summit, and she is speaking in Italy at We Make Future MEETICTBahrain.

Novelist and  presenter: Kate Mueser talks to us about he debut novel, The Girl with Twenty Fingers. We discuss her book, her process and how she got this done while pregnant with twins. 

Kate Mueser was going to become a concert pianist, but instead became a bilingual storyteller with a penchant for music. She spent over a decade working for German broadcaster Deutsche Welle, where she reported and presented an award-winning documentary feature on the future of the book and hosted a TV show on German pop music, a web video series, and a youth radio show. Kate holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Piano Performance from Indiana University and a Masters Degree in Modern European Studies from Columbia University. A California native, she has spent nearly her entire adult life in Germany, with brief interruptions in New York City and Las Vegas. Karolina Decker, is a long-standing financial expert, entrepreneur, mother and, as co-founder of finmarie, Mind the Gap e.V. and Schulgold, she is particularly committed to financial education for women and students.

After earning two master's degrees in business, Karolina initially began a 10-year career as an executive in international banks, working  with projects in asset and wealth management and compliance. 

She became one of the few female traders.

Early on, Karolina realized that women have a different approach to their wealth accumulation, ask different questions, have different needs and goals.

 Born in an Indian slum she was the first woman in her family to go to college.

Forty three years ago, Margaret Hirsch helped found the family’s mega appliance store, Hirsch’s in South Africa. Today, Hirsch’s own 19 Hirsch branches nationwide, it's quite an achievement for the company's humble beginnings. As Executive Director at Hirsch’s, Margaret has evolved into the brand's ambassador.

Margaret is a champion of women’s empowerment, having been there once herself. When she was 12 her father died leaving her mother to fend for herself and two small children. Margaret’s strong sense of survival and her positive attitude helped pull her family through the tough times. Having had to battle from an early age, she was determined to get ahead. 

Margaret went back to get her matric certificate at the age of 60, by the age of 70 she had her degree, and her MBA, all while working full time on the business. 

Margaret regards herself as a “jack of all trades”. Having done the selling, invoicing, demonstrating, being a delivery person on the trucks, installing and demonstrating in customers' homes and generally taking care of everything at Hirsch's for the past 43 years. 

“We have built Hirsch’s from a tiny little “mom and pop’s” store to a billion rand company and I hope that I will be an inspiration to others to know that they can live their dreams as well,” she says.

Personally I loved that Margaret has improved and reinvented herself to accommodate the changing landscape of the business world, taking on social media marketing like a pro. I chatted to her about her how she's had to reinvent herself over the years. So much wisdom was imparted.

Some of the most recent clients include  Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the Swiss foreign office, African Union Commission, and the Centre for women's global leadership. Her expertise won the Star Performer Award from the South African Revenue Service (SARS) in  2004 and 2005. Mamuteane enjoys bringing structure and function to physical spaces when she's not bringing order out of chaos.

I love when people share their stories of how they got a new position or secured a new client, just by being the first one to reach out and offer their services. Hearing people's thought processes and how they approach situations, whether they follow conventional wisdom or not. 
I love how some people train their brain to face their fears or the intrusive voices when they preserve with their plans and follow their visions. 

Women have been socially conditioned to not making the first move, or speaking out and sometimes even stand the risk of being punished or penalised for taking initiative. 

Once I learnt to overcome my own limiting beliefs, there have been many times when taking initiative first has shaped who I am and inspired me to take more risk.

South African born author, Shubnum Khan chats to us about her latests book,  How I Accidentally Became a Global Stock Photo and Other Strange and Wonderful Stories.

In 2018 Amazon  terminated its trial artificial intelligence (AI) recruiting tool after discovering it discriminated against women. This tool was created to trawl the web and spot potential candidates, rating them from one to five stars. But the algorithm learned to systematically downgrade women’s CV’s for technical jobs such as software developer.

Although Amazon is at the forefront of AI technology, the company couldn’t find a way to make its algorithm gender-neutral. Its  failure reminds us that AI develops bias from a variety of sources. There's a misconception that algorithms are supposed to be built without any of the bias or prejudices that influence human decision making, but the truth is that an algorithm can unintentionally learn bias from a variety of different sources. Everything from the data used to train it, to the people who are using it, and even seemingly unrelated factors, can all contribute to AI bias.

On today's episode we have renowned thought leader and Chief Data Scientist for IBM Dr Eva Marie Muller-Stuler who's here to shed some light on just how sexist AI is? 

Dr Muller-Stuler is a trusted advisor to both governments and international bodies (e.g. the UN) on the risk of AI and its impact on society. She collaborates with international organisations on developing a worldwide AI ethics framework.

Divorce Lawyer and litigation attorney Yolandi Van Der Watt survived a deadly divorce shooting that claimed the lives of three other people, including her father. After doctors declared a 1 percent chance of survival, Yolandi determined to beat the odds, fought back to regain her health. After eight months of being in recovery she returned back to her legal practice. She currently continues to fight for justice even in a backlogged and seemingly unfair legal justice system. Women litigation lawyers, like Yolandi, are some of our unsung sheroes.

Saray Khumalo  is a Zambia-born South African explorer and mountaineer. In May 2019, she became the first black African woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

At the age of 47, this mother of 2 achieved her personal goal of submitting the highest mountain in the world. But this wasn't her first time. She had tried to conquer Everest three times before and in 2019 she finally succeeded, earning her the title of the first black African women to reach the top of Mt Everest. 

She talks to us on how she has achieved this summit mindset because we all have mountains in our daily lives.
