It sounds simple… but this might be the most misunderstood question I get.

Vietnam isn’t one climate. It’s three distinct regions — North, Central and South — each with their own weather patterns, typhoon seasons, rice harvest colours, humidity swings and “why didn’t anyone tell me that?” moments.

I can’t stress this enough: if you don’t ask yourself this question early, you can end up choosing the wrong visa, applying for something you didn’t need, or realising far too late that one small decision here has shaped your whole trip.

And what is an eVisa?

What travellers should know before deciding to visit Vietnam during the TET holiday.

Tết, Vietnam’s Lunar New Year, is the most important cultural period of the year — but is it actually a good time to visit?

Just to be clear from the outset - Tết dates relate to the Lunar New Year Calender and are usually between Late January and February. You should check the dates for the year you are travelling as each year is different. Tết New Year's eve usually marks the beginning of the holiday but it can be a day or two before.

In this episode, I focus on what Tết means for travellers and how it affects transport, accommodation, tours, and daily life across Vietnam. Rather than diving into history or ritual, I share the real-world impact on your trip, along with practical travel tips to help manage expectations — especially if this is your first time visiting Vietnam.

This isn’t a simple yes or no. Whether Tết works for you depends on how you travel, what you expect, and how flexible you’re willing to be.

I cover what really happens during Tết, when the slowdown starts, which places cope best, what commonly closes, and when travelling during the middle of Tết can work. I also explain why I usually recommend travelling well before Tết or about a week after for a smoother, more enjoyable experience.

In this episode of the What About Vietnam podcast, I had the pleasure of uncovering Yen Bai and Tu Le—a region and destination resort I’d describe as a true “diamond in the rough” in Vietnam. Known for its breathtaking natural beauty and minimal development, Yen Bai is perfect for those seeking tranquillity and a break from city life. Imagine being able to hear your own breath, surrounded by minimal noise and almost no traffic—just the occasional local cows and chickens.

My guest, Hylton Lipkin, the General Manager of Le Champ Tu Le Resort Hot Spring & Spa Yen Bai, provided an in-depth look at what makes this area so special. I stayed at his resort, the only one of its kind in the region, offering a luxury experience in what I am calling - the heart of nature. My journey from Hanoi to Yen Bai (being the province) was a comfortable 4.5 to 5-hour drive, making it a convenient escape for Hanoians. From my personal experience, I’d suggest a stay of at least 2 nights, so you can enjoy the surrounding walks, hotel facilities and relaxation.

Hylton highlighted nearby attractions like Mù Cang Chải,( 1.5hrs drive) famous for its terraced rice fields, and the unique cultural heritage of the Hmong, Thai, and Kinh people who inhabit the region. Well worth driving to for the amazing scenery around every corner.

We also discussed the local food delicacies and accommodation options at Le Champ Resort, from glamping-style rooms to luxurious bungalows. The resort offers a blend of comfort and natural beauty, with natural hot springs, an exhilarating 1 km zip line, and an infinity pool with stunning mountain views.

Here I am, "Out & About in Mui Ne," determined to share with you my findings as experienced through my eyes. It's a down-to-earth exploration of Mui Ne's hidden treasures and unique vibe. This is as authentic as it gets!

Drawing inspiration from a previous episode S3- E17 I did with Nikki Cornish, I set out to explore this famous beachside location, known for its luxurious resorts like the Sailing Club Resort and its unique sand dune landscape.

An Instagram favourite known to be very popular with travelling Russians, it is just a short three-hour drive away from the bustling streets of Ho Chi Minh City. Thanks to improved highways, reaching Mui Ne was a breeze. I cover other other transportation options like trains and buses on the show however I opted for a private driver due to the bulk of luggage I had in tow.

Lets just say, we let the winds be our guide to an interesting stay.

My stay gets very personal to me, as we visit a close friend's family farm near Phan Thiet, providing a firsthand glimpse into Vietnam's agricultural heart. This intimate connection not only enhanced our exploration of local seafood cuisine but also deepened our understanding of Vietnamese culture and the city's main population. Without my friend Linh’s guidance, I can candidly say we would have missed a lot. Her insights added layers of meaning to our experiences, turning an ordinary trip into a rich journey of discovery.
She really made the trip for me and she took the role as guide for the 3 days we were there.

Travel Tip:- Mui Ne is not as Westerner-friendly as other cities, with a strong Russian presence and limited English-speaking locals. The “Out & About in Vietnam” series continues with Kelley McCarthy and I deciding to go in search of a beach escape from Saigon. Not many people know about this place, and with a new highway making it so much easier to access, it may just be the ticket!

Today we're exploring a different kind of vacation experience—one where the hotel itself is the main destination.

Our destination is Hồ Tràm, located about 125 kilometres from Saigon. Just a 2-hour shuttle bus trip away. Our home away from home for this trip is the stunning Melia Ho Tram Beach Resort. ( Please note this is an unpaid review)

Hello, I'm Kerry Newsome, and welcome to my podcast, "What About Vietnam." In this episode, I'm thrilled to introduce you to a mini-series "Out & About in Vietnam" that will take you along on my holiday adventures in Vietnam. Over the next 60 days, I'll be sharing my experiences, destinations, and the fascinating people I meet along the way.

Today, we're starting with "Out & About in Saigon", my first stop on this journey. Vietnam is a country that benefits from research and preparation, and through this podcast and series, I aim to help you navigate the overwhelming amount of information out there. In Ho Chi Minh City, I recommend taking the first day to orient yourself. Use Apps ( See You Tube I did talking about Apps here ) like Grab for transportation, Exe for currency conversion, and Google Maps for navigation. Decide whether you want to hit the top attractions, explore the outskirts for a taste of history and nature, or simply wander the streets and get lost in the local scene.

Bac Giang, is a picturesque place that often remains under the radar until the Lychee Festival, typically featured in social pages and news around June. This lively event commemorates Bac Giang's distinction as the "Land of Lychees."

In today’s episode Bac Giang and the subject of lychees are front and centre, as I get to share the story of a photographer named Jessie Pearlman, a previous guest on the podcast, who embarked on a return trip to Vietnam, driven by his love for the country and his desire to reconnect with friends and explore new experiences.

This show delves into the motivations behind his journey; the significance of the lychees to the region and the community, and how best to navigate a visit there. What About Vietnam – S5_E3 – Heritage and discovery in Saigon, The Mekong Delta and Dalat

In this podcast episode, I have the opportunity to introduce you to Vicki Thai, a Health Care Sales professional living in Utah, USA, with Vietnamese heritage.

Vicki's family immigrated to the United States from Vietnam when she was four years old, and during her growing up, she had never given much thought to her Vietnamese background. However, a moment of vulnerability in her mother's health led her to realize the importance of experiencing her heritage. She decided to plan a trip to Vietnam with her mother and reached out to the "What About Vietnam" podcast for assistance.

As I knew the background to the tour, I took great pleasure in planning this trip for Vicki and her mum, which included visits to Saigon, the Mekong Delta, and Dalat. These locations held special significance for Vicki and her mother, allowing them to explore their roots and connect with their heritage. Unexpectedly, the trip evoked strong emotions and a newfound appreciation for their Vietnamese identity.

During their stay in Vietnam, Vicki and her mother engaged with the local people, immersed themselves in the country's culture, and marveled at the landscapes. This experience transformed Vicki's perception of her birthplace, instilling a deep sense of pride in her heritage. She also praises the warmth and thoughtfulness of the Vietnamese people, particularly their tour guides, and one in particular in Saigon, Ms Thuy.

The episode highlights Vicki's journey through Saigon, the Mekong Delta, and Dalat, showcasing her awe and discovery of these places. I think for those who don’t live in their country of birth, you will relate to Vicki's story.

Despite the trip going mostly smoothly, there was a minor glitch, illustrating that while many aspects can be controlled, some factors remain unpredictable.

From the bustling vibrant city of Saigon, Vicki takes us by the hand as she describes her love of the bustling city of Saigon, to her awe and disbelief cruising through the Mekong Delta and then to discovering through the forests, the city of Dalat. A city she totally didn’t expect, while being her mothers’ birth city.

At a deeper level this episode offers insight into the transformative power of heritage exploration and the deep connections it can foster.

I’m thrilled to have such an engaging conversation with our guest today about the digital nomad lifestyle. Whether you're a seasoned nomad or just curious about this exciting way of life, this episode is a must-listen!

I am fortunate to be joined with Florian Rucker who inspires nomads by providing a unique, friendly, and well fit out co working space in Hoi An called The Hub, to perform this kind of work. If you can imagine having high speed internet, in a glass workspace, in the middle of rice paddy fields, you have it right there!

We get down to “tin tacks” as we talk through the evolving landscape of digital nomading and the transformation since Covid. No longer is it just for the youthful adventure seekers, employers are now funding some people to work this way, as they now recognise working remotely doesn’t have to impact output given the right set up.

Hoi An and the The Hub provide workers a unique experience in Vietnam and now that the E-Visa stays are being extended to 90 days this looks like being a very viable option for more people.

Flo is uniquely qualified to speak to this topic having lived abroad since he was 16. Originally a Berliner, he has a Cambridge education, and has lived in 7 other countries throughout his life. With a background in Development Aid and a IT Agency owner he fell in love with Hoi An after being a customer of the The Hub back in 2017. He bought the space in early 2021 and rebuilt it nearby, in the middle of the rice fields in ‘22/’23.

Are you a drone enthusiast planning to visit Vietnam? Or do you have a general interest in drone photography. Either way you won't want to miss this episode where my guest Anton, a local drone enthusiast, shares his tips and experiences on drone use in the country. Along with some humorous tales of motor bike riding.

Anton, known as 'Alright Anton' from his YouTube channel is able to share with us his insights and tips on how to simplify the process of using drones for non-commercial purposes. He shares very real circumstances that can impact your drone flying success in some locations; and you will laugh hysterically at the stories he shares containing birds, wind and avoiding mountains.
The big tip: - Stick to avoiding 'no fly' zones and you won't have any problems.

Anton, originally from Ukraine, has been traveling throughout Asia for the past five years, starting in Malaysia, where he taught English for three years. He developed an interest in blogging and photography during his travels and has since started a YouTube channel where he shares his experiences and drone footage. Anton believes that Vietnam has it all, from beaches to mountains, making it an ideal destination for drone photography.

For the real amateurs like myself I share some of my own experiences with my DJI Mavic Pro 3, and how travelling with this camera can cause some challenges. However, with some forethought, and proper planning, these can easily be overcome.

It's a fun show as in addition to Anton's droning experiences he shares his genuine love of places like Ninh Binh, Ha Giang, Sapa and while some of his travel stories are scary, his tales are very amusing.

One of my favourite things to do in Vietnam is taking photographs. You can’t help wanting to just click away!!! It’s hard not to want to capture Vietnam’s magnificent scenery and colour popping landscapes, rivers, mountains and cities a buzz with people and rich culture. However, how can we capture those photographs that, upon reviewing them later, fill us with an overwhelming sense of pride and eagerness to share them with our loved ones?

To his credit, Thomas’s travels have resulted in an extensive archive of photographs from many countries and more recently Vietnam, showcasing the rich tapestry of the continent. His images can literally transport viewers to awe-inspiring landscapes, bustling city streets, and intimate cultural moments, inviting you to experience the world through his lens. In this show Thomas expands on his photography tips:- How do we take photographs of some of the local people in Vietnam streets and regional locations?

When taking pictures of people, Levine advises to look for expressions that show emotion, such as a person enjoying their food. He also suggests taking pictures of people in the background, so they don't know they are being photographed. When taking pictures in different locations, it is important to be aware of the local customs and rules. In some places, it is not acceptable to take pictures, while in others, it is encouraged. By understanding the local customs and rules, as well as looking for body language and expressions, photographers can create stunning images that tell a story.

With the help of experienced photographers like Thomas Levine, we can all learn how to take stunning photographs that capture the true essence of a place like Vietnam.

In this episode of "What About Vietnam," I talk with adventurer and cinematographer Jack Taylor about the region of Sapa in north western Vietnam.
Sapa is a scenic area known for its mountainous terrain and rice terraced fields. Jack shares his experience trekking and filming for his Youtube channel through the Hoang Lien Son Mountains and his interactions with the local hill tribes. Exploring the mountains of Sapa is an adventure like no other. Sapa is an overnight train ride or bus ride from Hanoi. What About Vietnam – S4- E21 – Exploring Phong Nha beyond the caves

If you thought Phong Nha, was just all about visiting the amazing caves you see and hear about, you would really be selling the area short. In this episode of "What about Vietnam?" we get to give you some background as to how the area managed to get through the Covid years. And we open up the agenda to talk about domestic tourism and diversification. Then of course we get to showcase many other cool fun things to do in the locality.
My guest, is a bit of a legend in this area of Vietnam, and is none other than Ben Mitchell. Besides being an all round nice "Aussie bloke", he is extremely knowledgeable in local history and riding the Phong Nha loop as it is called.

Ben has been on the program before and along with Howard Limbert in other episodes we have covered the caving aspect of Phong Nha in great detail, which undoubtably is its main attraction. However what you are about to find out in this show, is the caves, ....are just the entry point to other things to do in the region.

Furthermore, the episode encourages visitors to consider extending their stay in Phong Nha since a few days might not be enough to experience all the activities available. Everything from bike riding, walking tours, cycling through villages, farm to table feasts, and surfing, to finally enjoying a G&T watching a beautiful sunset over the paddy fields.

Ben has done a lot for tourism in the region, and is considered very knowledgeable on its history and many aspects of bike touring along the HCM trail. I feel sure from listening today you may like to consider bringing the whole family, as like Ben's young family, there is something for everyone. And everyone loves it!

In today’s show we explore Vietnam and the high hopes of a young traveller, singer and songwriter, who through his love of adventure and music found himself falling in love with Vietnam and its people.

Our guest Luke Webster talks about his travels and how he found himself enjoying a more relaxed pace, with happy smiling people and welcoming feelings of family and home.

He describes the sensory overload that hit him when he first arrived, and the beauty and serendipitous happenings that steered him to create the kind of music he had been wanting to make all his life.

Luke has written and recorded an album of his original music in Hoi An, Vietnam. He studied English Literature at Uni, then went on to do 3 Camp America seasons and two Ski seasons in France.

At the age of 23 he took a leap of faith and flew to Vietnam on a one-way ticket; met a musician from Israel and formed a band in Hoi An called The Langurs. Details of his Album soon to be released on Spotify will be provided below. He gigged continuously throughout the COVID years, also teaching English, guitar, piano, singing, Ukelele, and drums to expats in Hoi An.

After exploring the north, Hanoi and Cat Ba, he describes falling in love all over again in Hoi An. The vibe of this old town (or country town as he calls it) including the beach area of An Bang began to open doors to allow him to perform regularly and craft his own style and repertoire of music to an ever increasing local following.

Luke speaks to all of us who recognise the value of travel and especially to places where the culture is foreign to your own. He talks about how traveling and working things out as you go develops you as a person, and how it can broaden the mind to think outside the box.
I am sure you will resonate with Luke’s openness and honesty. His experiences and tales of relationships with locals and learning about Vietnam are generous and heart warming.

What About Vietnam - S4-16 - Ninh Binh - The mystical rival to Halong Bay

Ninh Binh stands out in more ways than one if you set your compass to the north of Vietnam. Located 60 miles south of Hanoi lies this magical, almost mystical province featuring mountainous peaks and a labrynth of waterways inviting you to explore its many viewpoints.

Sharp limestone peaks, shoot up from the ground reminiscent of what you might see doing the same thing out of water, in Halong bay. Which explains why they often refer to it as the Ha Long Bay on land. It is by all accounts Halong Bay’s mystical rival.

My guest, Jack Taylor joins me on the show. His talents lie in the skilful way he has captured the essence of the region in his videos. Jack, an English teacher by profession has been travelling and living abroad for most of his adult life. Spain for 3 years, China for 4, and now Thailand for 4 years has meant Jack has had a front row seat to some of SE Asia’s treasures. Don’t forget to check out his You Tube channel “I go cool places”.

As you will see in Jack’s video of Ninh Binh the outstanding beauty and serenity are breathtaking. Add to that a National park featuring a staggering amount of wildlife, and many pagodas including one of the biggest being the Bai Dinh Pagoda. You can easily get a sense of why some people think it has more to offer than Halong Bay. It is important to note that the Bai Dinh pagoda is considered a masterpiece of both nature and heritage, and it is the pride of Vietnamese people in terms of its quintessential architecture, culture and historical value. And, it’s NOT the major drawcard for the area.

Jack does a great job in giving us some handy tips for staying in the region, what are the best times to visit and some of “The Must Do” things. I hope you enjoy the show and will surely investigate this region as a place of surreal beauty, almost lost in time, close to Hanoi.

There are many reasons why Vietnam is a stand out favourite destination amongst female solo travellers. One of the dominant reasons is safety. My guest describes this destination as ,“it's probably my favorite spot in Vietnam, and maybe ever, just due to its complexity and beauty”.

If I could call this show the “reality Check-in to Con Dao” I would. As while it features some of the best beaches in Vietnam, it is not quite the same as what you would expect to find in Danang, Phu Quoc or Nha Trang. Its attraction is in its isolation. Contemporary art is shining fresh eyes on Vietnam.

Why are we talking about contemporary art as part of a traveller’s experience of Vietnam? It’s because the art you are seeing today in Vietnam and in galleries all around the world, wasn’t always there. The artists coming through the last few decades are showing their skills, and they are painting their version of history. Some with a view to building bridges. It's modernistic, forward thinking and truly powerful with influences from some of our greats: Van Gogh, Matisse etc.

Today’s story begins in the early 90’s. Not that long ago if you think about it. But years before any reconciliation between the US and Vietnam. I am talking with the visionary of Contemporary Art in Vietnam – world renowned Suzanne Lecht

Vietnam in the 90’s is a country rebuilding after being war torn for so long. You will be inspired by Suzanne as she tells about her initial involvement with the art scene in Vietnam after her husband died while they were living in Tokyo, and how she followed her dream two years later to seek out some artists in Vietnam, known as the Gang of 5. Ultimately, she goes on to make her dream come true to work with, and live with them, as she curated and exhibited their work to the outside world. Together with the Gang of 5 she builds her dream house. More on that in the show.

While I had done the interview with Suzanne previously, I got to meet her during my recent trip to Vietnam. Meeting her in person and having time with her in her home, and in, what is in essence “The Salon or gallery” she built with the local artists. Suzanne is an inspiring woman who you can tell lives her life with passion and purpose. As two blondes, we laughed at the irony of our affinity with this country and its people.

The Salon (Art Vietnam Gallery) is an intimate, creative reflection of the culture of Vietnam, open by appointment only. It can be booked for private parties, art consultations, poetry readings, music events as well as other cultural activities. Suzanne continues to curate exhibitions and shows in Vietnam and other cities worldwide to expose Vietnamese artists in the international art world.

Let me tell you a little about my guest Corrin Carlson the girl behind The Fatpassport instagram and Tik Tok Pages.

Starting from her home in the U.S. Corrin let her passport lead the way to a working holiday in NZ. From there she navigated her way around SE Asia finally landing in Hanoi in about 2019. Before she knew it, a month had been extended to 3 months. Then Covid hit. However, for Corrin that meant work opportunities popped up, and a special someone who won her heart. Eventually, she found herself in Hanoi for 3 years.

During her time in Vietnam, as a talented actress, she applied her skills to produce the very popular “The Fat Passport” Tik Tok and Instagram pages, sharing her “Plates of Hanoi” with her many followers.

Hué is a city not to be missed on your journey throughout Vietnam. Boasting a patchwork of imperialism and French colonialism you will find yourself delving back hundreds of years as you explore the legacy of war and a dynasty spanning 13 generations.

It’s a fascinating place. Quite beautiful as you find beaches and a river in the same city. Over a 3-4 day visit you can take your time meandering by bicycle through the countryside discovering historical relics and pagodas dating back to the 18th century. You will be charmed by the river, the paddies fields and local museums, plus you will gain a whole new perspective of some of the hardest fought battles in the American war.

The Craft Beer scene is probably one of the “biggest ” and best leaked travel secrets about Vietnam to hit the tourist map. It is unmistakably an industry that is being fast tracked as we head out of Covid.

It is a “scene”. It's a taste sensation. It's a "thing" you have to try. As you will find out in today’s episode, it’s a product produced from passion, skill and local flavours, which means it also has a story. When looking for beachside locations in Vietnam, you are absolutely spoiled for choice.

While the country has a long coastline, what is still very much unknown, is information about one such beach paradise and the easy access it has to a sprinkling of islands that make for exquisitely restful getaways from the world.

If you are looking for a beach side city with access to several beautiful islands + is known to have 300 days of sunshine a year, then you need to head to Nha Trang.
While the city boasts panoramic shorelines, sunsets and sunrises to colour your experience, and some of the best seafood in Vietnam. What was amazing to find out from my guest Colm Hutchinson, an Irish expat living in Nha Trang is that is has much more than meets the eye.

In the show Colm, who has been running his own digital media company, Halo Media since 2015, speaks to the changes that have taken place over the past 12 years, and how Nha Trang faired during the pandemic. I won't kid you here, it has received over time - good and not so good reviews.

Colm fell in love literally with Nha Trang as he married a local Vietnamese and is raising his young family there. He says he has seen a lot of tourists come and go, and now the country is open, it’s a great time to visit as the burden of 'over tourism' is long past.

When planning a wedding there are so many factors to consider.
While you start with - Who to invite? It quickly moves into - the venue and destination. And along with that comes the budget, and what style of wedding you want? How traditional, creative or crazy do you want it to be?

As you will hear from my lovely guest Jenny, a Wedding and Event Planner for 10 years in Vietnam, “the crazier the wedding the better”.

Art in Vietnam is everywhere. Sometimes it’s hard to actually know what you are looking at. As a tourist busy trying to cram so much in to a stay in Vietnam, the artist’s true technique or storytelling, is often lost on us.

Art takes many forms in Vietnam, as in lacquerware, paintings, silk, lanterns, pottery, fashion, homewares, and as you will learn in this show, there is a difference between an “Artist” and a Craftsman, who may produce the same style or product many times, yet it takes true skill to do this. We discuss the differences. And then of course how do you know what’s real or fake? Believe it, or not! Not everything is a copy, or fake!

With the advantage of my talented artist Bridget March, we are going to take it back 100 years and really talk about how Vietnam has developed in the art world.

Find out what some of the older forms of art told in their depictions of mountains that were meant to represent heaven; it’s rivers -the paths of life, and people painted so tiny they are meant to symbolize the very small space they take up in the whole universe. Nothing short of profound.

Bridget is a brilliant story teller. An artist herself of considerable note, Bridget is originally from the UK. As a successful product designer of 20 years, she went on to became a senior lecturer at Leeds University of Art. Following her dreams, she moved to Saigon in 2012 to fulfil her lifelong ambition of being a full-time artist. That love affair has only grown over time as she pursues her own work in Hoi An and encourages and supports local artists in central Vietnam.

She has published 3 books about Hoi An, Sapa and Saigon and has had 7 solo exhibitions of her paintings and drawings in Vietnam galleries and at International hotels.

She is also well recognised as the curator for the wonderful art gallery space at the Anantara Hoi An Resort. She has her own delightful gallery located in Hoi An – See here for details

When planning a trip with a family, we are always looking for places that will be of interest to the “whole” family. However, sometimes the late teen in the family is not always as enthusiastic as the rest of the clan.

If you are thinking about bringing your family to Vietnam and not sure if Vietnam will hit the button for children, in particular your teen son or daughter, you might be pleasantly surprised by the views of one such teenager who visited Vietnam with me in 2019.

Ethan Sanders is my guest and just also happens to be my grandson. Yes. Believe it or not as I was a young mum it shouldn’t have come as any surprise to be a young grandmother. I consider myself truly blessed.

Ethan was 16 when he came to visit me in Vietnam on one of my trips. 2 years on from that visit, Ethan and I chat about some of the activities he counts as most memorable and he thoughtfully gives up some advice for future travellers who just happen to be teenagers as well.

Vietnam is extremely kid friendly. It is a very safe environment and you won’t need to go far to find lots of activities kids of all ages will love. From adventure, safari parks, trekking, lantern making, fantasia and theme parks. The culture alone is intoxicating and if the hotel pools and beaches don’t allure them with waters sports. Nothing will.

What About Vietnam - S3-24 - Phu Quoc - An unbelievably scenic island paradise

An island blessed with white sand beaches, turquoise waters, swaying palm trees and an abundance of sunshine is attractive in its own right. If you add a jungle forest, waterfalls, pepper trees, a theme park for kids and an underwater world for divers, it makes for an unbelievably rich island getaway.

Phu Quoc, which is the focus of our episode today with Patricia Marques is only a short 45 min flight from HCMC, and is VISA free to visit. In fact its always been Visa FREE.

Patricia Marques is my guest and I was lucky enough to catch her just after a recent trip to Phu Quoc. A trip that coincided with the news that Vietnam is now open to general tourists. So our chat is current as of March 2022.

A little bit about Patricia.

Patricia is the General Manager of Starbucks in Vietnam, and as you would imagine with a highly demanding job like that, she looks forward to the occasional weekend getaway. Leaving on a Friday afternoon and home on a Sunday Night, she heads for Phu Quoc.
She was born in Lima, Peru, and throughout her working life she has visited many countries around the world. In the role as GM of Starbucks there isn’t anything she can’t tell you about coffee. She tells me in our interview this is the longest she has stayed in one country and for 2 reasons; 1) - I she loves Vietnam 2) - she has her dream job.

Amid the myriad of things we talk about, you will soon discover that Phu Quoc makes an ideal destination for families, couples and solo travellers alike. It literally caters for many types of travellers with amazing waterfalls to visit and trekking in the jungle like National Park. To, diving, snorkelling and a Theme Park for kids, that would rival Disneyland, located in the north of the island.

As a place to kick back and relax or take off into the wilderness, the island has it all, and given its location, it’s a seafood lover’s paradise.

Vietnam in the past 2 years of lockdown has really seen an opportunity to develop itself as a “Wellness destination”.
The country not only offers sheer beauty, open spaces to explore and discover, hot springs, culture, over 3,000 kms of coastline, quality food and wellness practices such as meditation and yoga are becoming easily accessible in properties and locations around Vietnam.

Today we talk about one of these Wellness retreat properties in detail, as I wanted you to have one true example as a point of reference. Plus, you will hear a little bit about the imperial city of Hue.

What About Vietnam - S3-22 - Phong Nha Cave tours in depth

Phong Nha caves have been described as a "a bucket list adventure travel destination" and after this podcast, I think you will understand why.

Phong Nha as a location, is fast becoming the major draw card to Vietnam for adventure seekers. If its magical scenery and surprisingly clean and green flourishing forests you are seeking, then you will want to give some serious thought to Phong Nha caves.

It has been said, passing through the different caves, that the stunning landscapes will make you believe the myths about fairies, and magical kingdoms, while the magnificent scenery will continue to enchant you. And let's not forget the enormity of some of them. Some are big enough to fit skyscrapers in.

My guest on the show, is Howard Limbert. Howard has been caving for 32 years and was part of the leadership team which discovered Son Doong, in 2009. Just in case you didn't know, this cave is now touted as the largest cave on the planet. I was fortunate to catch up with Howard when he was in the Uk at the time. He has a great way of describing the caves in such a way that you feel you are already there. OR, it is something you'd really love to experience.

There are literally hundreds of caves and a tour variety for all types of explorers.
This show covers the main Oxalis run tours, that operate over 1,2,3 and 4 days. There are other shorter more mass tourism tours available, but in this show we don't cover those.

And while it may sound obvious - knowing some phrases or a few words in Vietnamese can really make the experience even more fun.

What do you really need to know how to say in Vietnamese?
That's a hard one to guess ahead of your visit I know, but if you have special dietary requirements you might like to save, download this one and print transcript.

In Episode 1 of this 3 part series, we start with greetings, because that’s where all polite conversations start. But, what’s the right word to politely summons a waiter?

What About if you don’t eat or like spicy food? Do you have gluten free? Vegetarian?

These are just some of the words we take for granted back home, but try saying them in Vietnamese when you really need to?

Learning Vietnamese is not easy, but I have always thought it to be handy to know a few words in certain circumstances.

English is widely spoken in the main cities, but in the North and in the more remote regions, not so much.

You will soon find that the Vietnamese staff in retail and hotels have learned a few key words in English, so I’ve always thought it only fair I learn a few words of theirs.

Each week will be a new episode focusing on a particular setting or scenario you may find yourself in when travelling, as the title will indicate.

We all deserve a few laughs after the years just passed. So to discover there is a “happening” Comedy Scene in Saigon, I thought this has got to go on the MUST DO things during your stay in this vibrant city.

That’s the amazing thing about Vietnam. Despite everything it gets thrown from Covid to typhoons…it always finds ways to astound you!

So, let's kick off the year with a podcast that talks about entertainment, and more to the point - fun and laughter in the bustling city of Saigon.

Let me introduce you to my guest - Niall Mackay.

Niall is no stranger to the comedy scene in Saigon having lived in Saigon since 2016. A well known Stand Up Comedian, and Podcaster of his own Vietnam podcast “Seven Million bikes”, and “Did that really happen?”, he is ideally placed to talk about the evolution of comedy in Saigon. He tells us how he and his wife fell in love with Vietnam however, in the early days, they struggled to find good live comedy entertainment. So he set about to fix that.

Niall takes us through some great stories of how the comedy scene has matured with some surprising talent and venues. As an organiser, promoter, and comedian himself he shares with us the bevy of talent coming through. From local Vietnamese doing English speaking comedy, to the many Expats who also relish the chance to jump on stage and bring the house down.

Niall, as he will attest to, is still weathering the Covid storm of openings and lockdowns, but hopes to be back on stage next week. If nothing else this podcast will help you truly appreciate the background and effort that goes into the shows. A short episode to close out the series, I am again joined by Miquel Angel as we discuss the broader challenges of trip planning.

“While time is in your hands” says my knowledgeable guest Miquel, it does take astute planning to get the best out of the regions within a restrictive 14 day trip, which was the basis of this series. What About Vietnam - S3-15 - Travel to Vietnam - Part 2 -How much time do you need?

In this Episode we explore the value of time on a holiday in Vietnam.
This is part 2 - with Miquel Angel.

While we discussed in Part 1, the aspects of travel opening up to 5 provinces from November 2021. In this Part 2, we expand the travel opening conversation and unpack the normal trip duration of 14 days to see the main destinations. From there we discover the highlights and lowlights impacted by how much time you have in each place. Time becomes a BIG factor in your trip planning.

Commonly this kind of trip known as the “top to bottom”, or “bottom to top” trip tends to leave the traveller pretty exhausted( especially the long haul travellers) : and while many will attribute the trip to being magnificent, they don’t decide to come back and see more. So, unlike many other SEA countries which welcome back tourists over and over again, Vietnam, statistically in the main, doesn’t get the repeat tourist. It’s the “reasons why” that takes Miquel and I on a funny anecdotal journey of experiences that could contribute to this outcome.

During the episodes (Part 2 &3) we flesh out the typical experiences of this 14 day trip and how they could be better managed if the focus was on particular regions ie The South, Central, Highlands and Northern regions

Miquel and I will unwrap the very typical tour and hopefully give you some advice and feedback from being involved with these tours so you can choose wisely and possibly make better choices for yourself. Oh, but that’s on the proviso you come back, as we are pretty sure, you would be crazy if you didn't.

What About Vietnam - S3-14 - Travel to Vietnam opening up - The inside story

As the doors to Vietnam begin to open to travel after months of being closed, our eyes and ears are keenly focused on what the entry conditions will be. Most importantly for international travellers, as the doors to us have been closed since March 2020.

In this Episode which is Part 1 - of a 3 part series, I am fortunate to have Miquel Angel on the program as Head of the Human Resources & Quality working group inside the Vietnam Tourism Advisory Board, a private entity advising the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vietnam.

Miquel joins the podcast as my guest shortly after meeting with the Ministry which announced that they would open 5 provinces being:- Phu Quoc Island, Danang, Khanh Hoa Province the home to Nha Trang city, Ha Long Bay in Quang Ninh Province, and Hoi An in Quang Nam Province ; under very strict conditions.

What these conditions of entry are, and how they roll is what this Episode is focused on.

We discuss the background to Visas, quarantine, conditions of stay, and travel Insurance. All relevant to visiting these locations.

Miquel, a Catalan citizen, originally from 100 km north of Barcelona resides in Ho Chi Minh City. What About Vietnam - S3-13 - Everything you didn't know about Vietnamese noodles

When we think about noodles, we probably don’t pay too much attention to their origin. For most of us, they have usually come out of a box, all cut exactly to the same length and shape.

In Vietnam you will experience many dishes including the quintessential favourite, Pho, that includes noodles. However in Vietnam not all noodles are the same, and they don’t come out of a box. They are made fresh. And this is where the history of noodles and the traditional way of making noodles becomes our feature story.

Noodles are still made as they were hundreds of years ago and while you go about enjoying new and flavoursome dishes in Vietnam, this episode will give you some of the takeaway background to the noodle dishes you are trying. In the best fun way possible.

Neal Bermas is my guest and is the founder and Board chairperson of an innovative and sustainable social enterprise that provides hospitality training programs for street kids, orphans and disadvantaged youth in Vietnam, called STREETS International.
An integral part of the program is a restaurant in Hoi An called “Oodles of Noodles”.

Through this restaurant the STREETS international team have trained over 300 students and with this training Neal has become a leader in the development of the restaurant. Over the course of a decade Neal has taken it upon himself to learn as much as he can about the Vietnamese traditions of food making and in particular the nuances of noodle making. So he comes to the program with a wealth of knowledge and is a brilliant guest.

You may be interested to know In 2018, Neal Bermas was inducted as an Honorary Member in Vietnam to La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs the world’s oldest and most prestigious gastronomic association (founded in 1248 by King Louis IX of France). Amongst other prestigious awards; in 2015, and again in 2018, STREETS was recognized by Hyatt Hotels with a Global Community Grant Award. In 2017, Bermas received a Leadership Award from Consular Affairs of the US Department of State. In 2018, and he was honored to be selected as CNN Hero of the Year.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in a foreign country? Especially a country as beautiful as Vietnam.
Have you ever visited a place, and thought, I wish we could go back and live there.
With everything going on in the world over the past couple of years, I think many of us are asking ourselves big life questions, like - "Is this as good as it gets?", "Retirement doesn't look that much fun at home, but it may look a lot more exciting somewhere - like Vietnam?

Maybe you just want to mix things up and live in a place part of the year, and come back home for the other part. A lot of people do that in Vietnam.

Meg Le, her last name in Vietnamese is pronounced "Lay" as she is married to a Vietnamese, is my guest in this "insider tips" episode. Meg shares with us what it's like to be 40 something and give up a corporate lifestyle in Seattle to go travelling the world. She details for us the journey she and her husband took in 2 years of traveling, and how a series of events led them to move to Hoi An, Vietnam.

Meg and I take a deep dive into what the process is of setting yourself up as a resident, and what the pros and cons are of going from a tourist to becoming a resident. Including some fun stories along the way.

She definitely has a wellness bent, as she did teacher training in Yoga in India and now prefers to coach in Pilates and yoga coach (Flow with Meg).
Having really settled now into Hoi An after nearly 18 months, during the middle of Covid, Meg is ready for her next entrepreneurial adventure and will soon join a VC start-up accelerator program, where she will explore ways to leverage her technology, business, and wellness coaching background to build a new business. She is going to be a busy girl in the days to come as she continues to support her husband’s restaurant (Veranda Food and Drink in An Bang). This is where the humble bagel will lead them.

In todays' world of media there are so many news broadcasters competing for your attention, it’s hard to know which one to trust.
With the advent of Covid’s most devastating outbreak in Vietnam and in particular Saigon happening in 2021, getting local insights in English has been challenging. Albeit, when many other countries around the world are opening up, it's been hard to comprehend, let alone fully appreciate the ferocity of the Delta variant as it forced Saigon into one of the strongest city lockdowns of the last 20 years.
Michael Tatarski is my guest and in his role as Editor-in-Chief of Saigoneer, the Vietnamese culture and history website, and author of the Vietnam Weekly newsletter is well respected for his local knowledge and reporting in Vietnam and most particularly Saigon.

I catch up with Michael just as the October 2021 ease in lockdowns is about to happen.

If you are a foodie and looking for something adventurous in Vietnam; Something fun!
( I mean hysterical) and a bit out there! My guest Fleur Sharpe has the goods!

Let’s just say, the menu for lunch in Hanoi took a turn for the wild side when Fleur and her husband decided after checking the reviews, that eating at a snake restaurant in Hanoi, could be fun!!

With a bottle of French Champagne under their arm, off they went in the middle of summer to the Hung Restaurant in Hanoi. Fleur wasn't going to go cheap and nasty???, she chose the top shelf on the menu, so let's hear what a Cobra tastes like!

I really hope you find this adventure as funny and side splitting as I did.

Fleur is no stranger to food as she runs her own cooking lessons online using the Thermomix. In fact she is sort of the Queen of the Thermomix as she has been championing her craft and recipes using the Thermomix for many years. This was her first visit to Vietnam, so she said she was going to try and do as much as she could in the time they had.

So, while she says she was nervous, with everything she knows about food, she said she thought ......” what’s the worst that could happen?”...I’m on holidays...here goes!

You may ask yourself, what a crazy thing to do? But when you are on holidays, you can be known to do things you ordinarily wouldn’t. I personally have a phobia about reptiles, so there is no chance you would get me there. However, the story had to be told and I think you are going to love it. And guess what...they are both still around to tell the tale and have a laugh about it.

As a great influencer, he talks to us about ways in which we can leave “footprints in people’s hearts” and that by looking for those win-win scenarios we are impacting the future in a positive way.

What About Vietnam - S3-5 - The Ha Giang Loop - Vietnams’ final frontier

Whether you are the hard-core adventure traveler or just someone who loves scenery that is breathtakingly beautiful, you will love hearing about this region from my guest on today’s show.
“The Ha Giang Loop”, as it is referred to on many a travel website and Instagram page is a region of approximately 350Kms and is claimed to be a bike riders paradise. If you love hiking, trekking, caving, exploring mountainous peaks and travel photography that lets you feel like you are on top of the world, you cannot go past Ha Giang. And NO, it's not exclusive to backpackers as you will soon find out.

Long skinny roads wind their way to up peaks and summits which offer staggering views. One of the most photographed scenes of the whole loop is the Ma Pi Leng Pass which links the towns of Dong Van and Meo Vac, and is carved into the side of the mountains. Just type "Ha Giang" into Google and see for yourself the switchbacks and epic scenery.

My guest Tom Stone, who now lives in the main town says “If you are prepared to make the journey”, you won’t be disappointed.”

Tom, originally a New Zealander, now married to a Vietnamese, has been running tours in the Ha Giang region for nearly 12 years. Tom says “if you come to Ha Giang, I guarantee you will be blown away by the scenery.”

In this episode, you will hear about what to expect on “The loop”; forms of transport other than bikes; best times of year to travel; what to consider when you are booking a tour; accommodation misconceptions, and how much time to allow. ...This is the “biggy”!

Danang is our location and my super talented and knowledgeable guest Pedr Finn from Vietnam Food Safari tours, is our pathfinder into the city and our doyen of Vietnamese cuisine

If you are curious to try Vietnamese food but never quite sure what to order on the menu, Pedr offers up his favourites across breakfast, lunch, and dinner,…or “second lunch” as the Vietnamese sometimes refer to it.

What About Vietnam - S3- 2 -Mu Cang Chai – A landscape of beauty and ingenuity

CNBC published in their Global Traveler Magazine an article entitled "Why This Remote Gem Should Top Your 2020 Travel List."

Here's just a couple of excerpts from the article, "Deep in the valleys forged by the waters of Asia’s Red River, a series of colorful mountain villages are encircled by fields of towering rice terraces. The fields are agricultural feats of precision — rugged mountains blanketed with emerald stairways that, seemingly, ascend to the heavens above.

But this is not Disneyland. This isn’t a destination designed to attract visitors, international attention or the Instagram set.

But it did attract one Instagrammer, Jesse Pearlman and he is my guest today.

You will love hearing about this region as Jesse tells his tales and his experiences getting there the first time, and later, trips back and forth.

I am stepping out of the norm in this episode to share with you some travel industry knowledge from people I consider in the know, and who you may not normally have direct access to.

This is the episode for those people who don't know what to believe is really happening with travel developments in this region and what source to trust.

The number of travelers is smaller, the rooms are more quaint, and the dinners are more intimate. The ports are not large tourist areas but rural fishing markets with locals going about their days. Do you love to try new food? Do you like to experiment with new cuisines? What about learning a new culture and having some fun along the way? Then a cooking class is a must to include in your tour of Vietnam.

Not every country offers up Cooking Classes like they do in Vietnam. Cooking classes in Vietnam have a wide range of offerings including seafood, vegan and vegetarian, and will take you on a journey from farm to market, to table. Even, if you don't like to cook, you will find out WHY food tastes so good in Vietnam and what impact the region has on what you are eating.
Why do just one class, when each area offers up something different in their cuisine?

Vietnamese have a love affair with food and you will too after you do a cooking class. This is why I am excited about my guest today.

On the show today, we have Chef Tracey Lister. As a chef, author, trainer, and cultural expert in Vietnamese cuisine she has some important insights to share with us about the real value of doing a cooking class in every region you visit to better understand the nuances of the locality you are in. If you love competitive running and enjoy the spirit of a trail series, then this episode will cover what you need to know and much more.

David Lloyd, Sport and Race Director for the Vietnam Trail Series and my guest on today’s show, tells me you can go as slow or as fast as you like; and you only have to be of average fitness and enjoy walking and being outdoors.
Yes, "that's me", I hear you say! Okay, so training starts now!
I am warning you, David will woo you with the idea as he talks about the stunning views and the fun sharing with other competitors.

David says “ joining one of these events is a great leveler. When you are walking or running with someone that may be by day a shopkeeper, a banker, or a tech genius. It doesn’t make any difference when you are on that trail and climbing those mountains. You are all competing for the same trophy, and possibly feeling the same fears, exhaustion, and muscle pain.”.

He will make you laugh about some of the experiences of the most ardent competitors; You’ll hear about how much planning and work goes into managing groups sometimes 3-4,000: From accommodation to tasty food to medical support.

David offers up some of those special "stand-out moments" that you just HAD to be there to capture.
Plus, you will hear how these marathons contribute substantially to the work of Operation Smile, Newborns Vietnam, Blue Dragon, Hue Help and Sapa o Chau. These charities are obviously close to David's heart as he says they also carry out local projects in villages along the route.

David Lloyd is originally from the UK, but has lived in Hoi An since 2011.

His background includes journalism and photojournalism. He has had work published in The New York Times, and he has also written guidebooks on Vietnam and Laos. He is an active participant and competitive runner and cyclist.

Arriving into any big city can be daunting for even the most seasoned traveler.

Arriving into Saigon with a population of about 8.6 million people and over 9 million motorbikes can be downright “hair raising”. It's 2020 and most of the world is in lockdown, except maybe Saigon or HCMC as it is also known. Vietnam is doing well, despite it all.

You’ve heard about the nightlife.
You’ve read about how much the locals like to party.
You know that in the bowels of this city there is an energetic bar scene just waiting to be found.
Where are those amazing rooftop bars that showcase those vistas of the city at night?
Where are those eclectic bars down alleys, upstairs, and hidden behind big heavy doors?
Is it safe to go out at night?

How do you find them? Where are they? The city seems to be so spread out.

I am lucky in this episode to have Selene Alcock on the show. Selene comes from a media and filmmaking background, which makes her an exceptional storyteller.
In fact, in this episode, Selene is going to give us the "scoop" on Saigon Nightlife as she has experienced it since Covid hit. So I have given Selene the mike for this episode.

Selene is an amazing creative talent, with a fun personality and a curious mind.

Hear how Danang offers up a new kind of experience for my guest today, Jonathan Kiely.

A fun Irish lad who left Ireland in search of adventure and who found himself drawn to the beachside city of Danang where he has decided, he might just settle for a bit, as he rates it as one of the best “Chilled out” cities he has ever visited.

Jonathan left his high pressure job in Ireland to go traveling. He landed in Vietnam and despite the Covid Pandemic he opted to stay on and live the life of “Riley” so to speak as an Expat.

A year and a half on, Jonathan gives us his version of Vietnam and his experience of Danang and the local community which he has found an affinity with through various health and well being programs.

He raves about the people and the environment in which you can explore your own creativity. Plus, you can SURF.

Things to know about Danang

Danang is located in Central Vietnam, and has an international airport.
It is a 1-hour flight from either Hanoi or HCMC.
The city links you to Hoi An which is only a 25-minute drive to the famous Old Town from the airport.
Danang is being touted as the city to watch! It is known for its beautiful beaches, stunning sunsets, mountains, and beautiful surroundings such as Son Tra, Lady Budha, Hai Van Pass, Marble Mountain to name a few.

It seems Danang has earned the reputation of being one of the most liveable cities in Vietnam with good reason.

If you love trekking or want to embrace a more authentic experience of Vietnam you have to head to Sapa and North Vietnam.

My guest today Phil Hoolihan gives us a very in-depth take on what the Sapa region offers from the well worn tourist tracks to the more authentic immersive type experiences you can get if you are prepared to dig a bit deeper.

Phil Hoolihan is an academic who came to the region over 20 years ago on a science project studying biodiversity. You possibly can't even leave your own country yet, but when you can, you may want to think about a reboot of wellness and healing in a lush, welcoming, delicious, culturally diverse country like Vietnam. But how do you research and plan ahead for this kind of trip? In my experience, it comes from "talking with the locals"

I begin this episode by letting you know in advance that this is the first in a series of interviews with people offering different kinds of health and wellness retreats and modalities of wellness in Vietnam. They are mostly travellers who have decided to live in Vietnam and carry on their passion and teachings in their specialized fields of wellness. In today's program, I'd love you to meet Emma Sothern.
Emma is a lovely Irish girl who decided after extensive travel to make Hoi An her home. Emma runs her own retreats and offers classes and support to those with a condition she has been dealing with most of her life called Alopecia, an autoimmune condition, which she says has been easier to manage through the practice of yoga and mindfulness.

You will find yourself drawn to Emma as she reminds us that a health retreat, no matter where it is, is NOT an overindulgence and should not be seen as such.

Vietnam has its high end 5 * retreats mostly offered by the major hotels, and it also has the more grassroots versions that focus on a local and more immersive experience. You can spend a lot, or a little, to possibly achieve the same result. It's all about matching expectations in an environment you feel most confident will deliver the experience you desire. "Just being" in a circle of people all doing the same thing Emma says is what people talk most about after they complete their stay.

Post Covid I expect more people to be seeking this kind of experience, and I can think of no better place than Vietnam to do so. As Emma says: “Just go for it”. We have been through a lot this past year and we deserve to nourish ourselves for mental health and happiness.

What About Vietnam - Series 2 - 9 - Discover Phong Nha and the largest cave on the planet

Today we take a peek into one of the worlds most famous cave systems located in Phong Nha National Park.

Characterized by mountains, tropical forests and underground rivers, it’s known for its ancient limestone karsts and vast network of caves including the world-famous Son Doong Cave, the largest Cave in the world.

After talking with my guest today, I think you will be convinced there is a lot more than meets the eye about this place. A place you just have to experience to believe it.

Please let me introduce you to my guest today, Ben Mitchell.
Ben lives with his wife and family in the historical region of Cu Nam Village just outside of the main town of Phong Nha. A more down to earth Aussie guy you’d never meet. And one who has had front row seats to the development of the region over the last 10 years.

The caves are so new that information has up until now been a bit scant, and focused on reaching the ardent trekker, explorer and high adrenalin super fit traveller.

What you will love about this episode is how Ben demystifies the urban myth that you have to be the super-fit traveller to enjoy the caves and the National Park. He breaks the caves down into types, which helps us understand what skills you need for each one. If any.

Ben has a lot to share. And I can’t give it all away here. You will just have to listen for yourself.

Ben and his wife have lived in Phong Nha since 2010, and during that time they have built their own homestay called Phong Nha Farmstay. It’s a cosy homestay with all the traditional elements you will come to love in Vietnam, with some highly desirable creature comforts, including a swimming pool looking over a perfect vista of rice paddy fields; a spa and bar pouring the perfect gin and tonic after a busy day exploring.

Since living in the region Ben has become very active working with major tour groups like Oxalis and local operators, to boost tourism to the area, including working with others to build luxury accommodations to attract a more discerning long stay traveller. What About Vietnam - Series 2 - 5 - Explore Mai Chau and its threaded history in textiles

Today we delve a little deeper into the cultural side of Vietnam as we traverse an area where many of the minority groups still live, as they have done for many hundreds of years.

Our program today takes us to a place called Mai Chau, Located in the Hoa Binh Province, about 135 Kms or 3 hours drive from Hanoi.

We get to explore this rustic location with my guest traveler Cynthia Mann who managed to complete a trip there recently when the Covid-19 Lockdowns were suspended and travel was open to locals and ex-pats.

Cynthia chats with us about the amazing villages in the area, home to the ethnic Thai and Hmong people. Due to Cynthia’s main business being in textile and design, she will talk to us about the vibrant local markets such as Muong and Pa Co Markets. Here, you can find traditional colourful handicraft products made using skills developed and passed down over many generations. We find out there is much to learn about those amazing handwoven scarves and bedspreads we see in our travels throughout Vietnam.

Mau Chau is a surprising delight. Not as overrun with tourists, as in places like Sapa, and offers a very authentic view of local village life. Surrounded by beautiful forests, and a major reservoir with its own sense of beauty, you will be charmed by this little idyllic location and Cynthia's experience.

What About Vietnam - Series 2 - 4 - Tam Ky and Tam Thanh Beach - Not on the regular Tourist Track YET!

Vietnam has so much to offer the tourist. You have all heard this said before!
However, not all of its lively cities, or tranquil beaches, are played out in mainstream media or travel guides.
Tam Ky is the capital of Quang Nam ( The same province Hoi An is located in) and Tam Thanh Beach are two of those places the tourist's HAVEN'T overrun or for that matter know much about.
Meet Sander Seymour, my guest, today on the program. A fun American guy who came to Vietnam over 4 years ago, and try as he did, couldn't leave, He literally fell in love. With Vietnam and a lovely local girl from Tam Ky.

Hoi An, is a very popular and famous Old Town. It will almost always feature in any tour you are looking at doing. If it doesn’t, it should!
As a Unesco World Heritage site, it’s charm stems from its many lanterns, its pretty river and wooden shop houses.
