Tekton Triggers Beta

Tekton Triggers is a project that adds eventing support to Tekton i.e. it provides a mechanism to declaratively create PipelineRuns and TaskRuns based on external events. With the recent v0.15 release, Tekton Triggers now has a beta API.

So, what exactly does “beta” mean for Triggers? Tekton follows the Kubernetes deprecation policies which means that we will avoid making backwards-incompatible changes to APIs and features that are in beta. If we do have to make a backwards-incompatible change, users will be given at least 9 months’ worth of releases to migrate.

GitOps: Yay or Nay?

GitOps is a paradigm or a set of practices that empowers developers to perform tasks that typically (only) fall under the purview of operations. It’s a way to do Kubernetes cluster management and application delivery by using Git as a single source of truth for declarative infrastructure and applications. Being Git at the center of delivery pipelines, engineers use familiar tools to make pull requests to accelerate and simplify both application deployments and operations tasks to Kubernetes. GitOps software agents (e.g. ArgoCD, Flux, and Jenkins X) can alert on any divergence between Git with what's running in a cluster, and if there's a difference, Kubernetes reconcilers automatically update or rollback the cluster depending on the case.

Three phrases keep popping up when talking about modern workflows and development and deployment techniques. We have continuous delivery to automate the complete lifecycle of applications from a commit to a Git repository, all the way until a release is deployable to production. Finally, there is a lot of focus on different deployment strategies grouped under progressive delivery. While baking code into container artifacts has been a core part of Spinnaker, the introduction of CiBuild as a mechanism to increase insights into what gets built, is a new feature enabled in a collaboration between Netflix and AWS. In this talk, we will discuss architecture, implementation, and enablement of the new CiBuild plugin, and how it empowers the Spinnaker community to integrate their build systems, code repositories, and container registries into their Spinnaker deployments.

It is an exciting time to be in the CI/CD industry. We are delivering more software than ever before and at a rate and scale that we might not have imagined years ago. 15 years ago continuous integration and continuous delivery were not common practices but today they are the key differentiators for every industry, whether you are a releasing a new banking app or a new contact tracing app. Delivering software securely and speed matters to every aspect of modern life.

We have huge opportunities to innovate and advance continuous delivery adoption. Yet there are some challenges which make this difficult to do so. Being a relatively new industry, we often talk at cross purposes about terms and phrases – the same words mean vastly different things to different teams. The landscape is confusing, often impenetrable to newcomers and changing habits to adopt emerging practices sometimes feels overwhelming to teams.

In this talk, we will look at the origins of continuous delivery, how it has evolved to present day and where it is going. We will also talk about the role open source communities will play to make continuous delivery simpler yet more innovative, widespread yet inclusive and faster yet still secure.

Event-Driven DevOps with Keptn: The End of the Monolithic Delivery Pipeline!

While software architects have broken their monoliths into event-driven service architectures, many pipeline architects still try to apply a monolithic pipeline approach to deliver these new architectures. This results in constantly outdated pipeline code, tight integration of process and tools, lengthy diagnostics sessions to fix broken pipelines and puts strains on the underlying resources that build, deploy, test and validate. In this workshop we introduce a new approach: Event-based Continuous Delivery which decouples the declaration of processes from tooling. It uses a “everything as code” approach which includes deployment, testing, quality gate, observability and promotion definitions. Organizations often employ more than one tool in various stages of their CI/CD pipelines due to different capabilities provided by the tools and this is perhaps one of the biggest benefits users get by using open technologies for their CI/CD needs. However, one of the challenges users face is the lack of interoperability across the CI/CD tools and technologies, resulting in various issues while constructing and running pipelines such as passing metadata and artifacts between the tools or achieving traceability from commit to deployment. Often users end up building their “own glue code” to address what is a common problem, further complicating moving from one tool to another and adopting new technologies and methodologies.

These “glue code solutions” are generally specific to users’ needs and tools rather than being loosely coupled and agnostic to tooling and technology. Additionally these solutions are not visible to other users and the communities, making them vulnerable to the risk of outage in their CI/CD pipelines due to potential changes (i.e. non-backward changes to the APIs, changes in data models) that happen to the tools in respective projects.

Therefore, focusing on tool interoperability is critical. The Continuous Delivery Foundation highlighted interoperability as one of the Foundation's 9 goals. The Interoperability special interest group (SIG) was founded as the forum for driving towards this goal.
